She was so different from everyone else that was coming out at the time. Cindy Lauper had a style that was just as wild, if not more, but she didn't have the overt sex appeal. Madonna was risque and we all wanted to emulate her style. She evolved throughout the years and managed to stay relevant for a long long time. Who knows, that lady might come out with another hit any day now.

Agreed. She cannot match voices with the greatest vocalists but she always had scores of entertainment value, which is why she was a top seller. Whitney and Mariah far out sang her but she topped the charts with her innovative style and lyrical subject matter. She is definitely an icon.
