Came by to honor Sinéad O’Connor who sadly passed away a few days ago. She had a hauntingly beautiful voice. She famously tore a pic of the pope in half on live TV (SNL) to bring attention to sexual abuse being committed & hidden by the Catholic Church. She was vilified for it. We now know she was correct and brave enough to be one of the first to publicly call them out on it. I pray she’s at peace in God’s hands now 🙏🏻.
I believe I was in junior high when Sinead was on SNL and tore up the picture of the pope. I honestly didn't understand why it was such a big deal. She was merely sending a message of truth that was already out in the public. Besides, people shouldn't be worshipping any pope or idol but God himself.
Sinead O'Connor is one of the most underrated female artists. She defied the stereotypical and male dominated record industry by shaving her head and singing about issues that were affecting her, her country and the world. She bore the brunt of mainstream society when she tore a picture of the Pope at that time, and publicly chastised the Catholic Church. She was ostracized, denigrated and disgraced... however you feel about her then, and now, she stood for what she believed. And she is an amazing artist. I've listened to her for more than 20 years. Women singing about their past boyfriends or expressing their anger and pain from past relationships, she created that genre before Alanis Morissette, Tori Amos, even Taylor Swift.
Lion and the Cobra is one of my favorite albums of the eighties, and she's tied with Annie Lennox for my second favorite female voice - Kate Bush is #1.
hey twins! I'm a 61 year old white guy from england. I have lived and loved these songs for years and i'd like to thank you for listening to these songs and judging them on their own merit, rather than just dismissing them because they came well before you did. Keep up the good work your curiosity, your patience and your politeness do you credit.
Yes.. but their entire attitude changed at the point of the graveyard scenes...I could see they were ripping emotionally and it was wonderful. Love all of your expressions. And yeah...she was amazing
Amen! She was such a good girl, but she had a lot of problems with her mom and the Catholic Church. It’s really hard to accept that she’s not here anymore. I will keep her in my prayers, rest now, Sinead. ❤
She’s Irish. This is a song written and performed by Prince originally. But like Whitney houston made Dolly Parton’s “I will always Love you” her own and iconic. Sinead O’Connor took his song and made it her own. It really is quite different from the original with a few similarities.
Back then her haircut was just a huge deal. Scandalous! Everybody talked about it! But this girl could do ANYTHING with her voice. It could sound breathy, like a flute, then it could go straight into something strong like a trumpet. She was just beautiful, and her voice was AMAZING. She has had a hard, strange time since then. This is still an amazing song, and she did an even better job with it than Prince did. And I love everything Prince did.
Her head was shaved at least a few years before this song. What I remember is she did it because she didn’t want to be objectified for her looks as a young woman.
Plus it was the first time someone cried on a popular music video. Oh and I recall her saying that she was thinking of her mother when she sang about the flowers dying when she went away.
"Nothing Compares to 2 U" is an anthem for my mother. She was murdered at age 21 while luring a stalker/kidnapper away from me. I was 22 months old. I'm 61 years old now and as hard as I've tried throughout my lfe, nothing and no one could ever fill the void of her loss for her only child. Mother, Nothing Compares 2 U.
Prince’s manager Steve Fargnoli also managed Sinead O’Connor. He asked Prince if Sinead can record it, and he said yes. Originally, he wrote it for the band he was working with called The Family. But Sinead version was way better. Yes, Prince and Sinead had an altercation, and they didn’t get along... and yes, they didn’t meet until after she had recorded the song, but Prince was very aware of her recording it. I worked for Steve Fargnoli and Sinead for years (up until Steve’s passing in 2001). Both beautiful people. 💜
My boyfriend was killed in a car accident just as this song was hitting the airwaves. His family played this song at his funeral. It tore me up, and still does. Rest in peace Duane. I still remember...
Tina Stoecker I agree. I love how open they are to different genres of music though. My grandson and I love watching them!! Thank you on the name comment 😃
Her voice sounded "country" in the context of 21st century cliches of country singers, but she's from Ireland, as am I, and our ancestors had a major influence on country music back in the day. (Listen to Dolly Parton talk about the connection between Irish and Country music). So, the little lilts that she places so carefully at the end of certain lines and breaks are just traditional Irish music's influence. Thanks guys for giving this fantastic reaction. There will never be another like Sinéad again. Sinéad's career suffered a major hit when she got on SNL and told the truth about the sexual abuse scandals in the Catholic Church. She tore up a paper portrait of the pope on SNL and the haters brought her down, as they do so many good people with principles. SNL is in NYC, and NYC is still heavily controlled ed by the Cardinal and special monsignors at Saint Patrick's Cathedral. These guys have too much power. Enough politics! This is a song about love, loss and longing. Good on you, Sinéad.
Bravo brother. My dad was born in Boston but by time he was 3 years old he'd had enough of that country. So he moved to western Canada at age 3, bringing his parents and siblings with him. So I was born in western Canada. My mom's name was Kathleen Murphy. All 16 of my gg grandparents were born in Ireland. So I like to think that makes me as Irish as you. I say that lovingly and with all respect. "Our ancestors"... man, that description hit me like a ton of bricks. I am Irish. I am a Celt and have been for 20,000 years. My last name in the old Gaelic is O'Rioghbhardain. I doubt many other readers here can translate that, but I've a hunch you can, lol.
I remember her SNL appearance..NBC banned her from the network I cheered her on she was badass and she was one of the voices of my generation may she R.I.P
@@TheJackie2006-b2kThe song was written by Prince about an ex-lover who was still alive. Once in her hands, it became in part about her late mother. "Mama" planted the flowers in the backyard in their home and they died after she did from lack of care. That's why she started crying in the video after singing that verse. So you picked up on both, which is cool.
That’s the Irish twang you heard, she’s from Ireland. You need to listen to this live, she actually sounds better live in my opinion! Also prince wrote this song!
Sophie Shinning what are you talking about? the song was written and composed by prince for his side project “the family” in 1985. sinéad o’connor released her cover in 1990. prince then released his own version in 1993.
Awe poor Sinead, what a beautiful, creative soul! I think it should be noted that she was 21 when she sang this song, her mother, who she had an extremely complicated relationship with, died 2 years previously in a car accident. When Sinead sings "All the flowers that you planted mamma, in the back yard, all died when you went away" you can see the sadness & grief in her face just before she starts to cry. I think in her mind, throughout this song, it reflected her sadness about her mother passing and thats why its so powerful because she put so much emotion into it. Sinead had a very difficult journey in this life but she never stopped being real or true to herself, she spoke & sang from her heart and although she was troubled & complicated and experienced more than her fair share of abuse & trauma, she always cared deeply and loved humanity. RIP Sinead, you're loved more than you could ever know x
Read Sinèad’s memoir, Remembering, she states she cried for her mother, singing Nothing Compares 2U, she said the line: All the flowers that you planted in the backyard, mama, died when you went away”, she was clearly mourning her mother and the extremely sad childhood she lived through.
@@BearODice She was never able though to reach the height of her first Album. Plus she received a lot of negative press which she brought on herself. .
This song and Sinead in general have a great deal of history. She is from Ireland and pretty much sacrificed her career by calling out the Pope at the time for covering up pedophilia within the Catholic Church. Quite the scandal back then (check out the video of her tearing up the pope’s picture). She’s been through hell in her life, abused both mentally and physically. The song was also written by Prince.
People got so angry about the Pope thing they talked about beating her up: _Sinead O'Connor performed an a cappella cover of Bob Marley's "War" on Saturday Night Live on October 3, 1992, rewriting a few of the lyrics to address child abuse, in addition to the song's initial topics of racism and the horrors of war. As she finished the song, she produced and tore to shreds a photograph of Pope John Paul II, shouting, "Fight the real enemy!" In his opening monologue the following week while hosting SNL, actor Joe Pesci insisted that had he been in charge of the show, he would have given O'Connor "such a smack." This echoed an event from the previous year when O'Connor insisted that the National Anthem not be played before her concert at a venue in New Jersey. Frank Sinatra, while performing at that same venue the next night, threatened to "kick her ass." And Jonathan King, a millionaire British television and record producer, and the executive producer of the BPI Awards, stated in an interview with Billboard that she needed to be spanked for her display of bad manners. Ten years later, King would be convicted of several counts of sexual assault on 14- and 15-year-old boys and sentenced to seven years in prison_ www.pri.org/stories/2014-10-03/remembering-why-sinead-oconnor-tore-popes-picture-national-tv
@@Jacob_Junge I thought her performance was brilliant. I understood her because several children I grew up with were abused by priests. This was covered up and perpetuated for generations. Unfortunately it happens in many religious groups, not only within the Catholic Church. It's a horror that needs to be stopped. Sinead was a big help in bringing this to light.
It made me so happy to hear you enjoying Sinead's music. Since we lost her a few days ago, it helps me remember the joy that she brought instead of just being very sad.
I came here looking for this comment. We lost a true pure soul. Even with all the pain she endured in her life she still put herself out there and tried to help others. I hope she was reunited with her son. 😢😢😢
Prince wrote the HELL out of this song, but Sinéad absolutely KILLED it. I love Prince's original demo, and his live performance with Rosie Gaines, but this right here? Damn. Sinéad's voice just chills me to the bone.
The best part is the guys may not realize they actually did the live version of this song 10 months ago sung by Prince, who wrote the song, and Rosie Gaines. Remember you noticed the Batmobile? ☮️💟
Sinead O’Connor is a force of nature she shook my heart when I was 16 years old I’m 50 now and she still shakes it today. She’s one hell of a woman it’s sad that she doesn’t see what all her fans see. Best thing Prince ever done was let her sing his song and I love Prince he went way to early 🙏
@@katrinaklapproth8788 he didn't, prince hated this version and talked about that publicly multiple times. the record company let her do this cover without prince's knowledge or approval. even though i like prince's renditions better, i still think this is a magnificent performance of this song.
I didn't read all the comments, but saw your recognition of Prince's lyrics first. Thanks for that! Amazing lyrics by Prince sung beautifully by Sinead. RIP to both!
She's Irish but Country music has Irish influences. Appalachia was populated by Irish and Scottish immigrants that brought that singing style with them. She does have at least one Country style song and did a duet with Willie Nelson.
I was once told that people in Appalachia often understand Shakespeare more readily than many in “today’s world”; that their speech has been protected from outside speech influences. You can find many stories passed down with the sing-song cadence of these people. It’s quite impressive.
The greatest country singer ever Johnny Cash traced his roots back to Fife in Scotland, he was very proud of that fact. Americas deep south white people could all trace their roots back to Scotland, indeed most country singers could. Country music as a whole was basically all decended from Scottish folk music, not Irish. Hillbillies all decended from Scotland and they took folk music and tweeked it to what you see today.
@@gailremp8389, one of the only albums that I actually listen to every song! Can't wait, my daughter is taking me to see her next summer. (I hope) She got the tickets for mothers day and the concert was in Aug. Of course it was canceled, it has been rescheduled for 2021. This album was pretty much my daughters introduction into rock. She was 4 and she still has it on her playlist to this day.
tawnyad they already have! Then everyone asked them to check this one out. I personally prefer this to the original. It’s got more emotional depth for me.
We love some Sinead O'Connor.. she had more ball than anyone to know what was going on and got in trouble for some action that she did.. but we owe her an apology because she exposed truth in her action. You deserve a medal girl 🏅

What I like about the twins is their capacity for empathy, which adds to their appreciation of music. They get it. They feel it. The respond emotionally. ❤️
Incredible to hear her speak on Dr. Phil The reason she shaved her hair was due to her mom (who was abusive) told her sister Sinead had the most beautiful hair and not her sister (somewhere along those lines) so she shaved her head.
“She’s crying!” God..I love that. That’s how we all felt the first time we saw this video. Like, she’s really crying! Such a great reaction to this iconic song.
Interesting that Prince (or his band) wrote this song. Always heard she wrote this for her mother. I guess she must have said sang it for her mother (after her mom died). Gives a much different meaning to the song when you listen to the lyrics.
@@majordisappointmentspeaking I think it was just after her mother had died. The bit ‘all the flowers that you planted in the backyard, momma, died when you went away’ was apparently what got to her.
@@majordisappointmentspeaking it was also soon after her mothers death and they had a very difficult relationship. She really was dealing with a lot. of personal things during the filming of this video...that tear was real. Ppl day it wasn't but it you watch it closely you see her eyes welling up several times earlier until she finally just let it go.
She actually sang that song to her extremely abusive child-abusing mother. Hence the real tears in the video. She died when Sinead was 18, but had quit abusing them before that and denied all the beatings and the sexual abuse. Yet still Sinead was tied to her because humans are wired to seek their mother's love.
God bless Sinead O’Connor. She was sadly misunderstood. Now she goes by the name of Shuhada' Sadaqat and is a practicing Muslim. I hope she’s found her peace. ❤️
She tried to warn us of child sexual abuse by priests. She ripped up a picture of the pope because she felt the Catholic Church aristocracy was complicit. She was despised for it 😡
These boys have not been heartbroken, this song goes to another level you when have. They appreciated it, indeed loved it, but didn’t feel that as though their heart had been broken.
Nora Noelle indeed it is, I thought how innocent and sweet that they hadn’t been heartbroken. It’s not a derogatory comment just that they so obviously hadn’t been heartbroken.

One of the only songs I prefer as a cover ( it hurts my heart to say that, I very big loved Prince) The other was Whitney singing " I Will Always Love You" again, I'm sorry because I love Dolly
She does look young because she was. This was written by Prince, she taped this in 1990, she was 23. She is an Irish pop singer, not country. Thanks for the reaction! ✌️
This is the best version of this song, IMHO. Listening to her back when this came out and to this day invokes so many emotions in me. Her voice just blows me away. There's a reason this was the World's #1 single in 1990.
Congrats on the Kelly Clarkson interview and her invitation to you for the Music Billboards award!! I bet your beyond excited!! Now, please I need a Fleetwood Mac attack!! Gypsy, Rhiannon, The Chain, Dreams, ALL BANGERS!!
Sneads version is the best and was an enormous hit just like the Bangles version of Manic Monday also written by Prince,Princes version of both not as good as those 2 covers hence the huge hits they had with both those Prince songs
This song still gives me chills 30 years later. Sinead was/ is strikingly beautiful. She did a fabulous job with Prince's song. I am surprised that you guys did not know that this was not written by him! The "2 U" in the title should have been a major clue!
Prince wrote this song. She sung it for her, “momma.” “All the flowers you planted, Momma, in the back yard, all died when you went away.” Hence her walking around the grave yard. Fantastic reaction !!!
Prince wrote this and that line was about his housekeeper (who was probably more of a friend than an employee), who resigned to have more time with her family, who used to put flowers by his piano... or something like that.
That “country” in her voice is traditional Irish singing. It’s amazing. There’s an Irish movie “The Commitments”. It’s a band with a sound called Dublin Soul, they point out that the Irish are the black folks of Europe.
@@krissielundy9934 Right?! Classic! My favorite part is when the back up singers are getting yelled at for using their Irish accents! “It’s ride Sally RIDE! Not riot Sally RIOT!”
The movie Song Catcher is awesome also. It’s about the origins of the songs of the Appalachian Mountain people coming from songs brought over by Irish immigrants. Bluegrass began with these folk songs of old Ireland.
Beautiful voice with her Irish accent in this song written by Prince. The tears were real as she had recently lost her mother (with whom she had a difficult relationship) and dedicated this to her. She had troubles in her adult life and after she recently lost her son, she was hospitalized for major depression due to her grief. It's widely believed that after she got out, she took her own life. She was the real deal. R.I.P., Sinéad O'Connor. 💔
The sleeper, because she dared to speak out against the Pope for covering up so much sexual abuse! She cared about her morals more than her fame...I was proud of her then, and still am.
@@jackandpiper Yes, I knew that, and I always felt sympathetic to her for her own demons she was fighting. I think she had some mental health challenges.
True! I actually marked my calendar for the 7th hour of the 15th day after my first boyfriend broke up with me just to really break myself. (Oh to be 15 again, LOL)
She is the most real artist and this song still sends chills all over! She’s Irish from Ireland 🇮🇪 boys and you should read her story it will break your heart! Thanks 😍
My mom loved her as well. I remember her singing that song a lot while I was growing up. My mom passed a few years ago at 89, and still could sing like Patsy.
Patsy Cline's voice is insane! And she only performed for 8 years before she died at 30 in plane crash. These are my favorites: Walkin' after Midnight, Sweet Dreams, I Fall to Pieces, and Crazy. You're right, though, Crazy would probably be the best for them to review.
I forgot how great her voice is. That song was EVERYTHING. Prince was a genius🙌🏽🙌🏽 Masterful songwriting skills. He has the ability to tell a story in such a way that you can actually see the lyrics & watch the story unfold. I’m probably not explaining exactly what I mean but Raspberry Beret is an example. One of my favorite songs. 🙌🏽🙌🏽❤️
When Sinéad cries in this song, so do I. So glad you enjoyed it. She is an incredible, talented woman, firm in her convictions and incredibly brave. Worthy of respect.
Please listen to Zombie by The Cranberries, a hugely emotional song about the Troubles in Ireland, before you were born but hugely important to those in Ireland and also the UK due to the bombing and terrorism and terrible tragedies
She was not unknown and this wasn’t her debut. Perhaps it was this song that was her breakthrough in the U.S., but in Europe she had already made the deepest impression with her debut album ‘The Lion and the Cobra’, and its stunning lead single ‘Troy’ in late 1987 that I think is even greater than this brilliant Prince cover.
@@sperrin I wasn’t specifically aware of that. What I do recall is Sinead saying she went to meet Prince, and he was aggressively dismissive of her, so much so that she left, feeling very distraught. That did sorta give it away, of course..
"Her first album The Lion and the Cobra was "a sensation" when it was released in 1987[13] and it reached gold record status and earned a Best Female Rock Vocal Performance Grammy nomination." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sin%C3%A9ad_O%27Connor
I'm SO GLAD you all finally listened to this! A bit of "nickel knowledge" (my Dad's term for trivia): The American country twang, especially the Appalachian accent derives from the accents of Scots-Irish immigrants, so it makes sense that she would sound a little bit country.
Interesting! I have heard the similarity in vocal flourishes between Irish and American country musicians but I didn’t realise that one was born of the other. Fun fact - the Irish love American country music. No surprise!
She touches on keening a traditional Gaelic, Irish style of mourning loss often sang at wakes and historically when a person is leaving their family for good (pre-budget travel emigration), I hadn’t thought of that as ‘country’ but maybe country is a broader term than I realised. Sláinte.
For sure - but a large part of country music came from Irish, Gaelic music - so no suprises there are resonances there. I just heard about the tradition of Living Wakes, which you mention, from Cara Dillon, here. ua-cam.com/video/ktm3NW_crMg/v-deo.html Unbearably moving !
Irish Galiec can sound a little country. Sinead O'connor is one of the great. I hope she is one of the "alive" ones, Prince too. Real freedom fighters, Super Soldiers!
Most Americans don't realize that our eastern mountain people in Appalachia are descended from immigrants from Great Britain. The west was populated by the same descendents. Just check out their last names. In British films they will slip in an "I reckon" every once in a while. 😊
I love watching you guys reacting to songs that were my songs back in the day. It is always bittersweet, because those days are gone, but it’s especially bittersweet this time because she too is now gone. A tragic day, July 26, 2023. I pray you are in a long deserved peace sweet angel sinead!
Goosebumps!! When you haven't heard a song for ages and the guys put this on , I had to listen !! Sinead put her beautiful voice to this prince classic and made it a modern classic!!
Best Prince song EVER! Sinead's arrangement is the best one ever sung. The first time I heard it I was walking through the lounge of my dorm and it was on MTV. She stopped me in my tracks. I cried. Her voice and the strings lifted me to another place.
@@TheFunk79 I'm sorry I was wrong! I've seen so many reactions to Zombie I thought they did one already. Yes, they need to do Zombie!!! And also agree with Alanis, I don't think they've reacted to her yet. I'd also like to tack on Florence + The Machine and Fiona Apple to this list.
One of Prince's. Miss him and his music greatly.. genius. She sang that beautifully. Blew us all away at the time.. We had never seen anything like that. Maybe Annie Lenoox a close but different sort of voice and great on her own right... Sonaed O'connor had a tough childhood. The girl did good. ❤❤
Finally!!! She's Irish, not American or country. She was in her early 20's when she did this. Blew everyone away. One of the best vocalists of all time. I still get chills.
Didn't the country /Appalachian sound originally derive from Irish settlers? I was amazed that they picked up country in her voice because it goes back to that Irish immigrant sound. There's a parallel here.
If you've ever seen the movie Coal Miner's Daughter, which I believe takes place in Appalachia, a woman in one scene does a dance that resembles Irish "Riverdance". So I guess that yeah there is Irish influence in that type of music and dance.
I love how moved you a te by her voice. She really did justice to Prince's lyrics and composition. (Sinead is an Irish singer, that's the sound you're hearing.) She was also ahead of her time. She got in major trouble for criticizing the Pope before all the child sexual abuse stories and the Vatican's cover-up started to come to light. She was out on a limb speaking out.
She did that thing tearing up the picture of the pope on Saturday Night Live, right after the X-case in Ireland, where a 14 year old rape victim was judicially prevented from traveling to Britain for an abortion. The abuse stories were coming out in Ireland at the time, America wasn't ready for that gesture yet, but Irish people knew where she was coming from.
Prince wrote this masterpiece. Sinead’s voice is incredible. What you’re hearing in her voice is traditional Irish singing, phrasing, etc. Troy from the Lion and the Cobra is one of her best.
True, but even Prince agreed that Sinead performed it in a way beyond how he originally heard it. This happens sometimes in songwriting. Bob Dylan wrote "All Along The Watchtower" but Jimi Hendrix breathed life into it in a way beyond Dylan's mind. Leonard Cohen wrote "Hallelujah" but Jeff Buckley took it beyond Cohen's vision. Sometimes the songwriter and the song performer are both needed for a song to reach its full potential.

It's amazing watching kids listening a song from a different age.
Am not sure they understand the spirit of that time, but they make me laugh 😂
Yes.. but their entire attitude changed at the point of the graveyard scenes...I could see they were ripping emotionally and it was wonderful. Love all of your expressions. And yeah...she was amazing

Sinead O'Connor didn't just perform her music. She felt and expressed it..from her soul.
💯💯💯💯💯
Amen! She was such a good girl, but she had a lot of problems with her mom and the Catholic Church. It’s really hard to accept that she’s not here anymore. I will keep her in my prayers, rest now, Sinead. ❤
She did Prince proud with this Cover of his song.
Prince actually wrote this song. She is from Ireland.
That's right Cindy
Yup! The King who was Prince.
I was just going to write this exact same comment.
Lol prince said the royalties bought him a house...
Didn’t Prince write this specifically for her? Miss him so...
She’s Irish. This is a song written and performed by Prince originally. But like Whitney houston made Dolly Parton’s “I will always Love you” her own and iconic. Sinead O’Connor took his song and made it her own. It really is quite different from the original with a few similarities.
WTF
I miss Prince..
You know he has an entire vault of unreleased music, videos and movies that will never see the light of day
HisSongGirl: MONI Doesn’t matter he got 100% of the writers share.
Sinead definitely made the best version of this song and I do love Whitney's version but Dolly's original will always be the best for me
Chris Stapleton also does a blues/country version
Back then her haircut was just a huge deal. Scandalous! Everybody talked about it! But this girl could do ANYTHING with her voice. It could sound breathy, like a flute, then it could go straight into something strong like a trumpet. She was just beautiful, and her voice was AMAZING. She has had a hard, strange time since then. This is still an amazing song, and she did an even better job with it than Prince did. And I love everything Prince did.
Agree!!!!
Hold ya horse, no one beauts Prince and Rosie Gaines. Then Chris COnnerly. Then Sinead
Have you heard You Made Me The Thief Of Your Heart? Another great, emotional performance.
Aw I’m sorry you went through that.
I hope you’re ok now
What a brave Mama you had. This is your song.
Wow. A mother's love.

So sad and such a poignant song. Special times in those days too. Xx
This is also the song that I latched onto after my husband died two years ago. I cry every time I hear it.

I was grieving the end of a great love affair at that time. The song's rawness matched my own loss perfectly at the time. Will never forget.❤

Is she singing about losing a lover breaking up with you; or did her live die??? Two different scenarios. Love the song. RIP Ms O’Conner.
@@TheJackie2006-b2kThe song was written by Prince about an ex-lover who was still alive. Once in her hands, it became in part about her late mother. Sophie Shinning what are you talking about? the song was written and composed by prince for his side project “the family” in 1985. sinéad o’connor released her cover in 1990. prince then released his own version in 1993.

Sophie Shinning same song. of course she performed it different to the original, that’s what you do when making a cover.
Sophie Shinning Sinead covered the song.

Yes, written by the legendary Prince, who gave away lots of great songs that other artists went on to make hits.
Yeah, she's Irish, & this song was written by Prince, & she was young - just 23 years old when she recorded & released this one.
Yep, and she was ostracized by the entertainment industry for ripping a poster of the Pope on SNL. They really did her wrong.
People got so angry about the Pope thing they talked about beating her up:
_Sinead O'Connor performed an a cappella cover of Bob Marley's "War" on Saturday Night Live on October 3, 1992, rewriting a few of the lyrics to address child abuse, in addition to the song's initial topics of racism and the horrors of war.
As she finished the song, she produced and tore to shreds a photograph of Pope John Paul II, shouting, "Fight the real enemy!"
In his opening monologue the following week while hosting SNL, actor Joe Pesci insisted that had he been in charge of the show, he would have given O'Connor "such a smack." This echoed an event from the previous year when O'Connor insisted that the National Anthem not be played before her concert at a venue in New Jersey. Frank Sinatra, while performing at that same venue the next night, threatened to "kick her ass."
And Jonathan King, a millionaire British television and record producer, and the executive producer of the BPI Awards, stated in an interview with Billboard that she needed to be spanked for her display of bad manners. Ten years later, King would be convicted of several counts of sexual assault on 14- and 15-year-old boys and sentenced to seven years in prison_

And the Irish LOVE country music.
Prince wrote this song
Yes!

She is hands down one of the most beautiful, and most incredibly talented singers to have come out of Ireland 🇮🇪 😍.
Prince wrote this song Sinead sure did it justice. Great voice real talent beautiful soul.
That was the 'relationship gone bad' anthem of the early 90s, Sinead's angst spoke to many a broken heart.
True! I actually marked my calendar for the 7th hour of the 15th day after my first boyfriend broke up with me just to really break myself. (Oh to be 15 again, LOL)
Yeees...Alanis, Melissa Etheridge, Jewel, Cranberries
😭 tears!
She is the most real artist and this song still sends chills all over! She’s Irish from Ireland 🇮🇪 boys and you should read her story it will break your heart! Thanks 😍
Seriously. Such an extraordinary woman surviving a lifetime of trauma.
Is there a biography out on her? Never checked.
But where would they read the truth? There so much bullshit and judgment written about her.
This song and the way she sings it still gives me shivers. Haunting, heartbreakingly beautiful.
I was 13 when this song came out and man did me and my best friend need this song at that time 😍😍
@@nashang75 Me, too!
Dopamine all day
No one can do this song justice other than her.
@@sakattt how about the original singer of it?
And Prince wrote this song. This song was made for this woman!
She is Irish. This is a song written by Prince. Listen to Black Velvet by Alanna Miles. You'll love it
That is a great song. I saw her perform live in DC many years ago.
I love that song too! 😀 Definitely has similar vibes to this song.
Yes for Women on Wed!
thank you for reminding me of my love for black velvet.
Please react to Crazy by Patsy Cline. My mom passed away in April, and was a huge Patsy fan, and I would love to see your reaction!
My mom loved her as well. I remember her singing that song a lot while I was growing up. My mom passed a few years ago at 89, and still could sing like Patsy.
Great memories!!
I love Patsy Cline😊
Yes!
Plus he tried to beat up Sinead
Prince is a legend.
Aw come on you, Prince a genius? I could've written that song easy, simple lyrics.
He truly was a genius. I mourn him still. Gone too soon.
I agree these two guys are amazing. Their sincere reactions to all types of music. If my daughters were younger I'd introduce them to these two!
Lol. Seriously
Prince wrote the song, and let a completely unknown Irish girl use it on her debut. I always loved that about it.
He also didn't let her record it, his record label did, unbeknown to Prince.
Prince hated this version and has been very vocal on it in the past.
@@sperrin I wasn’t specifically aware of that. What I do recall is Sinead saying she went to meet Prince, and he was aggressively dismissive of her, so much so that she left, feeling very distraught. That did sorta give it away, of course..
"Her first album The Lion and the Cobra was "a sensation" when it was released in 1987[13] and it reached gold record status and earned a Best Female Rock Vocal Performance Grammy nomination."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sin%C3%A9ad_O%27Connor
@@flowerpink724 Yeah, I remember that now, too. What an effed up experience that must have been for Sinead. :-(
Never gonna forget the first time I've listened to this song...more than 30 years ago ...and her voice still gives me goose bumps.
I'm SO GLAD you all finally listened to this!
A bit of "nickel knowledge" (my Dad's term for trivia): The American country twang, especially the Appalachian accent derives from the accents of Scots-Irish immigrants, so it makes sense that she would sound a little bit country.
This is so interesting, I never knew that!!!
Good to know! Thanks for that nickel knowledge....I like that
Interesting! I have heard the similarity in vocal flourishes between Irish and American country musicians but I didn’t realise that one was born of the other. Fun fact - the Irish love American country music. No surprise!
SO TRUE!!🙋🏾♀️
I grew up in Appalachia, & I didn't know this, but it resonates perfectly.
Fleetwood Mac landslide... seriously, how is that not on here yet??
Yessss
They pick artists they haven't heard before.
The Sinead O'Conner song was written by someone else. You two should look up her history. She's a whack job.
@@lynnenewell2016 she has disorders... not really a whack job.. rude
Indeed..
I thought it was pretty cool that they picked up on that. I'd never thought about it.
Most Americans don't realize that our eastern mountain people in Appalachia are descended from immigrants from Great Britain. The west was populated by the same descendents. Just check out their last names. In British films they will slip in an "I reckon" every once in a while. 😊
Yes, thank you. That's relying on the keening. Yup.
I love watching you guys reacting to songs that were my songs back in the day. It is always bittersweet, because those days are gone, but it’s especially bittersweet this time because she too is now gone. A tragic day, July 26, 2023. I pray you are in a long deserved peace sweet angel sinead!
You two are to cute....She's Irish not country...lol
Prince wrote this song. He wanted her to record it. She's from Ireland. Most southern people in America have Irish and Scottish heritage.
“Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears. It’s perfect for what’s happening in our crazy world right now.
Mad World complies better then😉 I prefer Gary Jules version though!
Buffalo Springfield For what its worth 1967
That song always feels like a drive to the beach sort of song. Love it.
I hate that Mad World song.
Or Sign of the Times, Prince.
! the Patti Smith version X :-)
This whole album got me through the most horrible points of my life. I honestly don't think I would be here now if I hadn't had this album.🐾
Fred patting his heart 💜...we need to find a way to put THAT on a shirt. Classic young men. 💜you guys
Hearing about her death this song is even sadder than before. May she rest in eternal peace
“I went to the doctor and guess what he told me, guess what he told me?”
“What’d he tell you?”
Love it
They subconsciously picked up on Prince’s writing. Those lines are FUNKY and kinda gospel and they caught the groove.
He’s a fool
My favorite part 😂
I loved that!!
Alanis Morisette 'You Oughta Know' and The Cranberries 'Zombie' and 'Linger' would be great picks for your Women Wednesdays!
They've already done Zombie.
@@macsfe9828 Can you link me? I did a video search and it didn't come up. Would love to see that!
Irish, not country. And Prince wrote this song.
Terry Colton I can understand the comparison though.
Country surely came from Irish music? 🤨
Terry Colton they didn’t say the song was country, they said she had a country tone in her voice.
I agree. But It must be said, "Country" is Celtic, at It's Roots. Hence this "mix -up". ;-)
@@rb7007 - yep !
CookieCakes yes, A lot of Irish and Scottish immigrants settled in Appalachia. Their traditional music is where a lot of country music started
If you've ever seen the movie Coal Miner's Daughter, which I believe takes place in Appalachia, a woman in one scene does a dance that resembles Irish "Riverdance". So I guess that yeah there is Irish influence in that type of music and dance.
@@bluedasher74 I'm going to have to watch that again
#agreed Lion and the Cobra
I remember seeing the video for "Troy" on 120 Minutes for the first time back in the day and thinking "WTF was that? What just happened to me?"
Troy is amazing. I also love Jackie.
marykate1971 Oh, yeah. Love that song too.
You have the best reaction to this beautiful woman's voice. You need to watch her sing this in concert. Love and peace always.
Love you guys.
Nothing compares to you!
WELL SAID !!!
True that!! 😀
My favorite part is when she said "seven hours and 15 days." No one switches it like that with the hours first then days.
Prince knew his way around a song.
Prince wrote the song & he sang it like that first before allowing her to record it. Look it up.
They do know she is from Ireland, right? And that Prince wrote the song? Just checking.
I like Prince and Sinead's versions but Chris Cornelly sang it best in my opinion
Irish beauty, Prince song- I listened to that CD on repeat! Amazing vocals,
"The Devil Went Down to Georgia" by the Charlie Daniels Band is one song you just have to listen to!
Can I get "YES" 👍 from some people out there?
Yesssss, I suggested it a while back, I think it would blow their minds, it’s very different to what they have watched so far
YES !
Yes!!!!!
I'll give you a " hell yes!"
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Prince was an incredible songwriter. Please remember he wrote this.
Prince performed this song 10 times better....
@@anthonylee5982 thank goodness opinions aren't facts 👍
Actually I could see that. I smell prince all over this
