It;’s definitely a song about empowerment. “You’re a superstar. Yes that’s what you are, you know it.”….inspiration taken from the majority gay, black, brown, and trans ballroom culture. Self empowerment, love and expression has really been consistently at the cornerstone of Madonna’s music throughout her career…..often overlooked by the controversy.

It is incredible watching the younger generations appreciate Madonna, recognizing her contributions and giving her props and respect... something that was not there very often if you grew up with and grew up listening to Madonna as a fan. You either loved her or hated her, growing up with her. That sounds harsh, but very true. You guys are giving life to old Madonna fans!!

I get so tired of hearing the "pushing boundaries" thing about Madonna. Madonna is so much more than a boundary pusher. She was an unbelievable force that merged theater, fashion, beauty and music. Before Madonna nothing had come close. What she did for female empowerment and gay rights will never be duplicated. She is the GOAT.

Yes, she was pushing boundaries, showing that as a woman, she has no problem with her sexuality, all kind of sexuality! Till then a sexy woman in the pop world it was used as a sex-object, but Madonna showed that she decides, she own her sexuality, she is a sex-subject, not a sex-object! Therefore Erotica was a huge scandal back then!
Yes, Vogue is more about self-empowering thinking also in the LGBT community because "vogueing" was a a dance practiced by black and latinos trans and gay people, imitating poses of fashion magazines like Vogue.
Or in Like a Prayer, denouncing racism, and police racism already back then, surrounded with burning crosses! Also with a black jesus, an interracial kiss (in the 80 still taboo in the mainstream) etc it was also a huge scandal, even the Pope of Rome ex-communicate her!

LGBT is today's identity for that movement. Back then it wasn't a 'political' title. Dance troupes had been rife with gay, bisexual and gender fluid individuals for decades. She just pushed that movement into the 'pop' world. There have been gay dance clubs for at least the last 50 years now filled with the same 'splendor.' And in Europe they go back even further.

This video and song helped to bring gay male culture into the mainstream.
It arrived at a time period in the wake of the 1980s AIDS crisis and ensuing HIV pandemic, when homophobia remained prevalent and LGBT rights and equality (no same-sex marriage, no human rights protection, no rainbow crosswalks) weren't where there are today.
Madonna was one of many celebrities who helped to embrace, value, and celebrate LGBTQ+ culture.

I was 3, not far from 4, when this video came out; and my sister, mom, and I watched it together. We all loved it! I remember my mom saying “She’s tough!” My mom is a harsh critic, and for her to give that kind of nod to Madonna of all people really spoke to how this song, and the video, cut across all lines of genre and culture. In 1990, my mom was still very much partial to the artists of the 60’s and 70’s, soul, R&B, jazz, and classic rock. Even at that age, I was surprised she liked something from a young pop star that much.
Part of what made this video so fun was that it had a little something for everyone. For us, we appreciated the homage to classic cinema of yesteryear, with the entire video in black and white, the style of her hair, the suits, the dresses, and the name drops of all those stars (i.e. Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Greta Garbo, etc). Those stars killed the game in the 1940s and 1950s, and to be immortalized like that in this masterpiece of 1990 by a contemporary is such a high honor. Somebody younger than me, watching this video, is going to search Fred Astaire, find his filmography, and learn that Michael Jackson’s style and dance was, in part, inspired by him. That’s pretty cool.

She made this number during the early part of her pregnancy, but that wasn't going to stop her from bringing down the house !! Madonna paved the way for today's female pop stars. No one can or should deny that. Without Madonna there wouldn't be a Britney, Christina, Rihanna, Katy, Gaga, and so many more. Yes, Whitney was the opposiite end of the spectrum but strong vocalists always existed in the industry whereas Madonna pushed it culturally, and turned the pop scene into a true expression. What I love about this reaction video is that "Vogue" is over 20 years old and it still sounds fresh today. It's an ageless, iconic song, as are many of Madonna's best songs. The same cannot be said about many songs from 20+ years ago, or even today.

People took her breaking boundaries as a ploy for attention. If you pay attention to her interviews from back then she was always very intelligent in her responses. She wanted to break boundaries there were for women but not men. Men were allowed to sexualize women in their videos and nobody cared but when she was sexual it was scandelous. She hated that and did it harder to put it in people's faces and get them use to it. There was always meaning behind her controversies. This song, "voguing" is a dance style that originated in underground gay clubs. Gay rights was another topic she covered before it was trendy for celebrities to do so. Honestly she was the first name I can remember that made me feel ok about myself as a gay kid and I'll always appreciate her for that reason.

    It's from 1985(but written/recorded in 1983).
The video itself is pieces from a movie called Desperately seeking Susan.
Madonna basically plays herself in it.
The song is dope, with or without the video.

Madonna is awesome and this a great video, she always created masterpieces with her music and videos! What the hell was doing hanging out with Kayne West - totally different personalities and viewpoints

Since #Madonna is going on a historic tour very soon, please bring Madonna reactions back. Here are some suggestions that I think she will definitely have on her Celebration Tour set list, at least the top 5, I hope.
    1. Music
    2.Express Yourself
    3. Frozen
    4. Secret
    5. Hung Up
    6. American Life ( Uncensored )
    7. Ghosttown
    8. God Control
    9. Papa Don’t Preach
    10. 4 Minutes To Save The World
This is a list containing some of her best work over 40 years.
I love your reactions; I am recently getting into your movie reactions. They are awesome.

That is why she’s the Queen of Pop! Back in the 80’s, when people wouldn’t talk about AIDS, Madonna was at the forefront of controversy for advocating! When racism and police brutality wasn’t spoken of, Madonna was at the forefront of controversy for advocating. ( Watch the video Like a Prayer ). When women’s rights was being placed on the back burner, Madonna made sure that would not be the case. She made sure femininity and sex was normal and excepting! My list of videos to watch: Like a Prayer, Papa Don’t Preach, Erotica, Human Nature, Secret, Frozen, American Life, Hung Up, Bitch, I’m Madonna, Living For Love, God Control, Medellin, Crave, and Batuka. I know it a long list, but I shortened it as much as I could! Lol!
