I just came here to say this lol. I relax since it feels easier to do, so since I’m not focusing as hard I’ll make more mistakes
Using my dominant hand means I’m painting *and* trying to keep focused, while using my non dominant hand I only have to think about the nails (the focus comes with the difficulty)

My left hand is paralyzed, so I do everything you let see. Except the gel, I put a layer on it in a quick way and take my very small brush and go over it in a precise way. My electric file hold I between the table and my left hand and go up and down It works very good. People can't believe I do it myself😊
And I like art 🙈 so sometimes I have to take a couple of hours for it but I do it myself💪 Thank you for all the lessons you give! Greetings from the Netherlands 💜

My tip isn’t for polish but I’ve created a quick little hack to help myself put extensions on myself using my non dominant hand. I place your forms on my nails then use a straight dual form tip, (not a full dual form, it’s just to create the tip) fill that with hybrid gel and place on your nail on top of the form. Keeps it straight and makes for much less filing for me anyways. Also don’t get a bumpy underside! Win win!

The moving your hand to file the non dom hand technique came natural to me decades ago. It just “happened” and it never occurred to me until I was watching UA-cam vids of nail techs and heard the tip that I realised it was how I’d always done it. It just “feels right”, it’s not something I ever have to think about doing, and I don’t remember any point in time where I had an “oh, maybe if I try it this way” moment. There was never a conscious effort to try it that way.
I feel like many people who do their nails often probably adapted in the same way without it being something they had to be taught. Because the dom hand is the one with more control and used more, the brain probably puts it on auto pilot 🤣

I have been doing my own nails for a couple of years now. I started with regular polish (which I highly recommend doing) and advanced to gel polish with a rubber base overlay. I have found that practice makes perfect with my non-dominant hand. I have used some tips like these, such as using my dominant hand as the one that's moving, making sure that both my hands are stabilized by touching something on something as I work, but mainly, just plain old practice.
I'm to the point where mostly my non-dominant hand is the one that's doing the work, the hardest thing for me has been the e-file. Despite me being very careful, in the beginning, I overfiled in spots on my dominant hand. I have never overfiled my other hand, so that told me it was a control issue. Now I'm more conservative sbout using the e-file on that hand, I get to a certian point and switch to a hand file, which is much more forgiving.
The difference between dark and light colors, as Suzi mentions here, is pretty big. Darker colors show every imperfection. I dont use deeper colors as much, but when I do, I use a similar technique where I use the polish brush to get close to my skin, but still leave a margin. I try to make that margin very even. It's more difficult than the technique I use for light colors, which is to take a tiny brush and get right up close to the skin. I also do that with my rubber base, so regardless of the color, the nail is well covered

Outstanding video. I got really hard and heavy into gel polish and now also sculptured gel nails, back in August, and this video was very instructive -- though I'm getting more practiced and less shaky while working on my dominant (right) hand with my non-dominant (left) hand, it's always good to get more tips on doing it better!
One thing I learned somewhere on UA-cam, might even have been this channel, is to do all the work on the right (dominant) with the left (non-dominant) first, just because it's more challenging and time-consuming; once I can start working on my left with my right, it goes much faster. But I usually do my thumbs first, usually the left thumb first; it's the easiest by far to work on, and it's a much longer, bigger nail, which lets me see the new color/effect on a bigger "canvas." Both my thumbs have hard gel overlays; the left just because I test stuff on it very frequently, so the hard gel helps protect my natural nail; the right thumbnail has a very distressing split if the free edge gets more than an eighth-inch long, but the hard gel keeps it intact.
Any suggestions on fitting a nail extension form on pinkies? I can never get the dang thing to stay on! I recently got some smaller forms, so maybe the bigger ones are just too heavy for that small, narrow nail. We'll see! I just got the most gorgeous "swimming pool blue" shade, and some luminous hot pink should be here later this week, so I can do a nice ombre with the two electric colors. 😊 So I'll be trying those smaller forms, once I get the current color and product off!

I basically trained my non-dominant hand by using the same trick you did with the file when applying polish. Hold the off hand steady and have, in my case, the right hand pull along the brush. Then i worked up to having both hands move together (with hands steady on a surface), until the off hand got the hang of the motion, then i could plant the right hand and paint with the left.

I think if a person is a DIY I get it. But if you’re having a professional performance this way, then they’re not professional.
If you were continuing to do this, it’s over exposure of the uncured product to the skin if you’re doing it with gel polish. This could lead to allergies, which was not a good idea.
