I always thought they just had a cliff hanger so the network would have to renew another season guess I was wrong. My name is Earl was something unique and NBC didn't like that even if it had 6.6 million viewers.
It was actually funny , relatable, an interesting concept, and every episode had a positve message to it ! They had to cancel it .

I was crew on My Name is Earl for all four seasons (Set Electric). It was a fun show to work on, the whole cast and crew were great! Gregg Garcia has been one of the best bosses I've ever had working in this business. We all thought there was going to be a season five also and I never got to ask Garcia how he was planning on ending it (The electric crew was one of the departments that didn't work on Raising Hope). So thank you for finding out.

I’m still watching the show in binging and have been since before it left Netflix, now that I have Hulu I’m back at it, seen the entire series 10 times now and I really REALLY hate the cliffhanger that I tried so freaking hard to piece the puzzle to.

That's actually a perfect ending for the show. There have to be things on Earl's list that are impossible for him to make up for directly, so you couldn't really have him complete the list. Even if you did, I guarantee it would feel pretty anti-climatic since there isn't a big special list item to end with.
Yeah, no matter what, an "Earl finishes his list" ending would not only be anticlimactic, but super predictable since he's spent most of the series working towards finishing it so we'd see it coming a mile away

That ending sounds great. I always assumed Earl would finish his list and was left unsure of what to do next, then begins a foundation dedicated for bad people to turn their lives around. Even having Joy(yes Joy) being one of the first people to be apart of Earl's seminars and exercises choosing to be a better person, with everyone writing down their own lists and working towards getting them crossed off.
But, the ending they had in mind, actually feels more real. The idea of someone who had the list idea from a friend of a friend of a friend leading back to a bad deed they did to Earl they wish to rectify is actually very admirable. The idea that such a concept could start a chain reaction of people writing the wrongs in their lives, spreading across the world would have been nice to see. A shame we never got to see it

I have to say I would have liked that ending because Earl inspired me to create my own list and after crossing all the items off (expect 2 hard ones I'm not sure I'll ever cross off) my life has greatly improved
Curiously, what are the two hard ones?
My first girlfriend I treated her wrong, I grew up in an abusive home so I thought I'm not like my dad so how could I be abusive. And though I never hit I'll yelled at her and mistreated her, gaslighted her. Losing her is my biggest regret in life I don't even argue in or raise my voice in relationships now I've changed everything about myself to make sure I'm not ever like that again. but the fact she won't ever talk to me again or forgive me makes me strive to be the best man I can be so that at the very least God knows that I'm sorry.
That would have actually been a real satisfying ending in Quantum Leap sort of way.
Who ever cancelled my name is Earl should be slapped with a wet fish loved it great times sat drinking a beer with my mates watching but still the repeats are still great just a shame it did not reach a conclusion.

@@cindygocevski4841 if you happened to also watch "Raising Hope", the character Burt is on a TV set in 1 episode and meets execs from major networks. He asks which one is from NBC. When the guy raises his hand, Burt kicks him in the crotch and says, "That's for cancelling "My Name is Earl"!
Since these are both Greg Garcia shows, it was PRICELESS! ...unfortunately, "Hope" got cancelled MUCH too soon also. Such a shame because both show were so witty with perfect casts. Thankfully, I can still watch reruns of both on Hulu!

@@DivaInTheWoods I too have Hulu and have been seeing that most of the cast of My Name is Earl have cameos in that show. Is it a good show to watch? I started picking up The League again because that show is also brilliant but I hold My Name is Earl closer to my heart and would think I would like Raising Hope just as much. I really enjoy Jason Lee as an actor. His older movies like Mall Rats and Stealing Harvard were a blast to watch. Sucks that he hasn't been in anything good lately though.
I always assumed when earl is talking to the audience it was him telling his story on a talk show or something and he would have published a book called The List and that's how earl would make his money

To me, My Name is Earl, IS his show. Notice how Camden looks so trashed yet so perfect, and small, almost as if its a set. Perhaps the moments we see in show, we're reenactments of what happened. Explains why some of the fights he got into on the show were tame, yet he describes as being worse than we saw.
I miss this show every day. I was devastated when it was cancelled. And it quickly disappeared from syndication, too! I don't understand, with all the various cable channels out there, why NO ONE will pick up this show! Glad I have the DVDs. I think I'm gonna get some out right now! :)

I always refer them to "My name is Earl" videos on UA-cam. Those guys were my caseload. I still laugh when I watch the shows.

Damn it! I wanted to see how Earl would react to finding out that he was Dodge's father, especially after seeing how excited he was when he thought he was going to be a dad and how crushed he was when he found out that Earl Jr wasn't his son.

because the big networks they want comic book TV. Comics already have pre-written plots and scripts It's easy to bring back the oldies then actually use their pea brains.

I figured somehow earl would end up being earl jr's father. They could spend a whole episode on "how did two white people make a half-black child?" Could have been pretty creative.
I just finished watching the series. Too bad it never got the chance to end naturally. Greg Garcia did a fabulous job with this show. Loved it from beginning to end.

They should. Sure a lot of time has gone by but they can work it in (Earl's older now and still working on his list, maybe Joy never told who Earl jr's real dad because Crab man decided he didn't want to know and would still think of him as his son) and they can still have the same ending where he realized he started a good chain reaction.

With all the reboot show craze, this is one that truly deserves it!! It certainly surpasses some of the reboots currently airing.
I really miss this show! Watched all 4 seasons third time again. It just doesn't seem to get old. I MISS RANDY. I wish they would bring the show back and finish it. They managed to finish "Looking" with one extra long episode. Probably, wouldn't work that pleasing way with My name is Earl, but boy i would be happy to see them together again. :`(
Thank you for bringing this. I am so glad to hear this. It was so moving, I seriously teared up. There have been redemption stories but this one sweeps the gamut of the “every man” and could be any of us. This guy WORKED and HURT for it, for figuring out how to fix the world. He did so against the bad advice and sabotage of everyone he knew, and he dragged them into bettering themselves. But it was made possible only under a big jackpot payday funded by tons of other total strangers. Anyway it’s quite a far cry from the sick ending of Pay It Forward.

Here's how I would have ended it. It's maybe a year later, Earl's money has run out, but he's got a job as a cab driver, and he is still working the list. Only, he's having trouble finishing off the last remaining items; it seems like there's always some obstacle or other. Eventually he's standing outside his cab, looking at his list, when a gust of wind blows the list out of his hand; and also at that moment he sees a young tipsy woman stumbling out of a bar and some frat boys starting to close in on her. Earl's got a choice to make - go after the list, or help the girl? - and he opts to pick up the girl, give her a free ride home. He helps her to her door, and her mother opens it and sees him - turns out it's one the people on his list. Earl starts apologizing over calling her a booger-brain or whatever, and she stops him: "Earl, you may have saved my daughter from ... I don't even know what. Whatever you did decades ago, it doesn't matter; all that matters to me is what you did today. Thank you." And that's when Earl realizes that he no longer needs the list, because he has changed: he is a good man, who does good things simply because he knows they're good. He still hopes to complete the list (which, he's sure, will blow back into his life when it wants to), but for now, the main thing is just to be the best person he can. "After all," he says, "you never know how much good you can do even without trying."
Which leads to him picking up a fare, and it's a guy studying a sheet of paper.
Earl: So, whatcha got there?
Fare: Oh, it's nothing. There's this thing I heard that, if you make a list of all the bad things you've done, and then make up for them all, you win the lottery.
Earl: Oh! So, how's it going?
Fare: Well, I haven't won the lottery. But, I've mended some relationships, and I like not feeling disappointed with myself. So ... I think I'm going to keep doing it.
Earl: Sounds like a plan!

If that really would have been the ending.... that is fucking AWESOME.
Earl might have been a dumb and silly show that was just about making you laugh, but it also was quite touching at times, and the heart of the story was just beautiful.
I would like to know what that one item on his list is that he (Earl) could not do.
I always imagined that it was his kid, because the "Black gene" did skip generations as per joy's original excuse.

Actually, earl stole the lotto ticket, which is why in one episode he gave all the money back to the person he stole it from(at the end of the episode the guy gives him the money back).
