What a fantastic show. Senior year in high school 1977. I was in the production of Godspell in Plano Texas. Fantastic production. It was my first musical. Went onto a career and show business for almost 8 years including two national tours of the Broadway show hello Dolly.
After the absence of such happy, uplifting music and singing and dancing, I’d almost forgot that music could make you smile and feel happy and good inside. I remember this song.
Omg! I almost forgot we did the Grammys. We did so many tv shows back then. I miss my buddy Lamar. He and I shared a dressing room @ the Cherry Lane theatre. The newbies to the LaMama cast. I can remember the smell of the theatre. Yummm. JJ
All I have to say is I was born in '70 and I must have seen the movie on tv. As a five or six year old, that adorable girl with the feather in her hair and her little red sneakers was my very first crush 😂

She caught mine, too. in this version of the show above at the Grammys in NY I’m actually playing my original clown Joanne who sang “bless the lord” It was for the movie I sang “turn back ol man”. and a costume swap!! I was very close with Sammy Bayes at the time and was his assistant choreographer, so had a perspective from both sides of the camera.David Greene got a few facts incorrect but overall did a -Great! job with converting to film considering the times. We’d never be allowed to dance on top of the World Trade Center or other buildings today. The insurance would be astronomical. We were young and innocent. JJ 🙋🏻♀️+💜
I thought it was only me! Robin's voice is very unique... she owns the tune. When later casts performed this song, it didn't affect me like Robin's version.
It was eight out of ten of us. Jeffrey and I were still finishing commitments out of town. Two understudies took over for us in this shoot. But, you'll still see Steve Nathan, Lamar, Herby and Sonia in this shoot and you'll see all of us in The Today Show footage! Peggy Gordon

@Tarotlynx :Yes, this was for the 1972 Grammy's. Robin and I were talking about this yesterday. She was laughing at her performance... felt it was a little over the top, but this is the actual choreography that John-Michael Tebelak created for this song (different lighting).
The ending bars are slightly different from the record and movie versions. I bet the producers threw something together to fit the shorter TV format. Sounds just as decent.
Over the Top, Nah, she's very animated, a pure delight to watch, the rest of them as well. Too bad the video is of poor quality, but we are indeed fortunate the sound quality is superb in this video.

I just returned from Assisi and Rome where the stories of the Clara and Francesco haunt me. How like the Cast of Godspell they were - taking the teachings to the street and putting them into an action that is understandable to someone like me....
I literally discovered Godspell on a school field trip as a 4th grader back in the 70's. Production was done in a barn with a stage. I had no idea what I or my classmates were going to see. The experience changed my life. 🙂
Great to see these videos of the original cast that have survived. Back in 73 when I first saw the movie I was 8 at the time and I saw the touring cast I think it was the same year. Love the show I've seen 6 or 7 live versions (well one I only saw the video of a live performance from a production a friend directed before I had met him). All but one of the productions I've seen had the prologue, "Tower of Babel" I'm not sure which production that was now. The settings varied from the traditional playground/junk yard, to an interactive museum, a business district with Jesus as a postal delivery guy who worked for a company called GOD (General Office Delivery?) and even aboard a subway car.

Does anyone know if there is any filmed footage of David and the original London cast of Godspell in the 1970`s at the Wyndhams Theatre or the Roundhouse on DVD/VHS or on UA-cam anywhere?
I like the fact in the 70s a women could have some meat on there bones and not have to be so skinny and yes Jesus dose look like howard stern but we really don't know what Jesus looked like
@@Tigerblade2002 She has an alto range, which I like too. The song doesn't even have an octave in it; it's super easy to sing, but not powerfully like Robin's.
Well in all fairness Howard Stern probably looks a bit more like Jesus than the Gay guy with the blond Afro in the film given that Jesus was a First Century Jewish guy but worrying about largely superficial things like appearance sort of misses the whole point of the Gospels, :)
Peggy, I never did get to direct this, although hope still reigns. The year that I was tapped to do it, I could not find a music director. 40 people I asked. I did pitch it 4 years ago to the same theatre, but politics won out, and another person got to direct it the next season. I am also a lighting designer, so the theatre(s) I would want to pitch to needs to be able to light it properly, and many cannot. I am involved with a group that is going to be building a new addition theatre space and I hope to convince them that "Godspell" would be the perfect show to open the space. I don't expect that this will be for two or three years, however. Still want to stay true to John-Michael's vision. That is a show that very few have experienced nowadays. Disappointed with the various iterations that have evolved. Just thought I would keep you up to date. Find it hard to believe that it has been 9 years since originally communicating with you. Take care.
