Dude, the Prince wasn't even stalking her! He was just riding his horse, minding his own business when he heard someone singing... and he went to investigate!
People actually do sing out loud hoping you will notice them, you can tell cuz they won’t start til I walk outside my house. Nice try i know if i make eye contact they are gonna ask me for something
The queen literally spied on her from a mirror watching her every move before trying to murder her, but sure please tell us again how a character who was in maybe 3 or 4 scenes in the original film stalked SW...
The prince doesn’t even stalk Snow White. He accidentally scares her, sings a song, and dips. Next time we see him he’s saying goodbye after thinking she’s died.
@user-pq4fc1mc7q1 its a cartoon. 2 if she wasnt kissed she would have stayed asleep forever. Stop projecting your real world problems onto a fairytale.
@@iamrysheemHard Agree! In fact in the original story he didn't even kiss her. They dropped the coffin & the apple piece fell out her mouth & she woke up. There was no kiss involved. But what these kids don't realize that that it was a diffent time when these stories were written & are canceling long dead authors & creators.
@user-pq4fc1mc7q its not the prince that is being defended. Its not the even the movie. Neither actually need to be defended. That’s the point that is being made. Yall are weird. There are real world issues that deserve to be attacked. You feel this is a problem. A character that is in a movie for 10 seconds. Is a stalker? What the hell is wrong with yall? Go to therapy. Im done with conversation.
The 1937 Snow White was a technological and artistic giant leap forward. Like the animation equivalent of going from the Wright Brothers airplane to the Moon Landing in one leap. Disney had to invent whole new machines to make it work and worked himself and his team to exhaustion to make it an artistic achievement as well as a technical leap forward. If you read Gabler's biography of Disney, the account of the making of Snow White is just jaw-dropping.
Exactly and these young actors, writers & directors have no ideal the sacrifice and effort it took to make these movies. To them its just old movies with old out dated ideas.
Sacrifice is the word. Walt Disney put his whole fortune and reputation on the line with Snow White, and taxed every part of his endurance and intellect. Not to mention the people skills needed to supervise all the other people in the project! Oh yeah, and this was during the Great Depression!@@sonicsnake44
I think this was meant to inspire people following the Great Depression. I think Zegler is kind of trying to one up this with the "diversity" to recognise how far we have FALLEN in terms of marketing and getting people to see the movie. She is almost clueless in terms of self awareness and "reading" the room.Seems like she is talking AT people ...
I’m just blown away by how she openly HATES the character she’s playing…..That alone makes this movie doomed to fail even if everything else about it wasn’t trash. Look at Rosario Dawson who’s playing Ahsoka. She actually is a Star Wars nerd who adores her character and Ahsoka looks like it’ll be 1000x better than this movie.
Oh, that's not necessarily true. Alec Guinness famously hated his role of Obi-Wan. The difference is the level of professionalism on display. Guinness didn't go around trashing the films on TV, or give interviews about how he hated the character while it was still in theaters, nor did he go around telling people he hated other projects Lucas or Fox had made. It was just a job he took on, but he did it professionally, and he thought carefully about what he said about the film while it was still in its theatrical run. It was only years after the fact that he even disclosed that he disliked the film at all.
The only "weird" part from the original tale was the Prince randomly coming out to finish her song. But after that, he serenaded her and she reciprocated by sending a literal flying kiss through a dove that blushed before delivering a peck to the prince. I don't get why romance and wanting romance is seen as disempowering, especially when it's something that leans towards women's interest. What's disempowering is denying what you truly want to put up a facade that you're superficially "strong and independent". You'll just end up miserable and bitter.
This is literally how I think of it too, why do Disney Princesses have to be SHE-E-O's now? I don't think there's some grand conspiracy or anything, but our culture is so weird with the "I don't need anyone but me" attitude. It's like they're trying to make women into the worst guy you know.
A magical mirror with powers that talks, 7 dwarves living in the forest, a witch with occult powers...but a young guy liking a beautiful young girl is WEIRD lmao
It's because those three things are "classic" fairytale elements that people are used to and expect to see. The part about "young guy liking a beautiful young girl" is weird because it has realistic implications in contrast to the fantastical stuff where anything can go.
My problem with Disney isn't the diversity, it's the fact that they are so lazy that they would rather remake, reboot or make old school cartoon movies like Snow White or Little Mermaid into a live action movie cause they don't do originality anymore.
They made a lot of original titles with diversity in them recently and put all the energy into remakes to pander. They are both lazy and ignorant but maybe they will actually advertise those originals more now they lost money lol will see.
Honestly, Disney movies are already remakes of brother Grimm or Hans Christian Anderson storwy! The remakes are like making photocopy of a photocopy of photocopy with brown crayon squiggles on top.
I will defend Hunchback on the point that, while Quasimodo didn't get the girl, he did get the love and admiration of the entire town he saved. The movie doesn't end with the ugly hero being put back in the tower to stay hidden, he's out and loved by an entire community. That's what Quasimodo really wanted, to be loved and accepted, and he got that. Just because he didn't hook up with a girl it doesn't mean the movie's message doesn't work.
And like others said, Quasi idolized Esmeralda. Phoebus saw Esmeralda for what she was, not a pure angel like Quasimodo, not a seductive minx like Frollo, but as a person. And on Esmeralda's side she saw that Phoebus was just as compassionate as she is. So they had the strongest foundation for a romantic relationship to build on.
I say this as a black man: I've noticed something weird about much Hollywood diversity. One of the criticisms of modern Hollywood is constant movie remakes. That's what they also seem to be doing with their diversity. Most of their diversity is remaking an originally white character. I don't care about this in moderation but it's insulting to make almost every black character a remake instead of giving us new, unique characters that we can truly connect with and call our own. It's diversity on a rental lease. Disney could make original stories about minority (like they did with the Princess and the Frog) but they don't and I can only think of a few possible reasons why: 1. Hollywood is risk-adverse because they no longer have DVD sales so they remake characters the way they remake movies 2. They're remaking characters to purposely cause controversy since controversy sells. Half that people will rant about it (thereby giving them free promotion) then the other side will respond by going to see the movie to support it. This adds to the culture war and divides us further. They could have their cake and eat it too if they made original characters. 3. Progressive points with minimum effort I think diversity in Hollywood is good but it should be original stories.
Everything you said! As much as I love Halle Bailey as a beautiful singer, I couldn't support The Little Mermaid, because she CLEARLY is being used as a token. I think she deserves better. Hopefully, The Color Purple movie musical will be a better breakout role for her.
The prince is barely in the film. He sings a love song then he saves her at the end when he randomly finds her dying. He's not hiding being a bush stalking her
I agree with Martin. Instead of avoiding the dwarves storyline altogather, they could've elevated the original material. They could make the dwarves as a small community of miners/workers, with a couple of them being female dwarves and married to the other dwarves, and show them as families and earnest working people. Dopey could be the youngest or one of the couples' child, thus the most easiest to accepting Snow White into their lives. Instead of Grumpy, they could have a matriarchal figure dwarf, who was wary at first at the outsider, but gradually opened up to Snow White and ended up having a motherly connection with her, something that she didn't have in her life at the palace. There could be a profound juxtaposition on her relationship with the female dwarf and her toxic one with the Queen. This would also give the little actors, who I assume typically don't get this kind of opportunity to show their acting chops, a great role to chew on. We could have an elevated adaptation with much thought and care put into it, instead of another stunt casting and sloppy rewriting of a classic.
The seven dwarves in Snow White are important characters because they contribute to the story's dynamics and themes. They provide comic relief, help create a sense of community and contrast with Snow White's innocence. Each dwarf has a distinct personality, which adds depth to the narrative and allows audiences to connect with a range of characters. Their roles include protecting Snow White, highlighting her vulnerability, and ultimately aiding her in overcoming adversity.
So, the 7 dwarves represent an advancement in the art of animation. Walt called it "personality animation" Walt named each dwarf a personality trait so that the audience would notice this advancement. Obviously, acting in animation has had a lot of development over the years since Snow White was released. But the seven dwarves have gone on to be some of the most beloved animated characters in history. Characters like Doc, Grumpy, Dopey and Sleepy characters as loved as Mickey, Donald, Cheshire Cat, Jiminy Cricket and The Mad Hatter. Throwing out the dwarves was the biggest mistake of this remake, next to making it at all. If you remember, Snow White 2 was in development at Disney in the direct to video department, but John Lasseter put a stop to it.
@@JustAnotherAlex You know what? You make a damn good point! I cant wait to see little white girls reacting to the new may casting saying " Mommy she looks like me!"
Yeah. They look like food stamp recipients (and I don't mean the people out there that actually try to get by with food stamps and have a normal life. I'm talking about people who don't even try).
It's not about having a diverse cast, it's about having diverse stories. That's why these castings feel so hollow. How about instead of redoing old properties and changing characters, we come up with new original stories that show stories of diverse characters.
Because Disney above all else wants to make money, I don't think they care about the stories. That's why we are getting nostalgia mixed in with inclusiveness because when it's done right it makes hundreds of millions. Unfortunately it seems they still don't understand that good writing and compelling characters can sell just as well too 🤦🏾♀️
Hollywood is creatively bankrupt and no longer in the business of taking risks with new/original ideas. The studios don't have faith in minorities nor are they interested in giving them their own franchise characters. This is part of the closet racism that is still very much present in our society. It's not about having true diverse stores. It's about doing just enough to satisfy the low information people who need to have characters that "look like them" in order to identify with them. Casting minorities as popular white characters does not advance minorities in films and television. It simply suggests they are not good enough to head their own original stories with characters created specifically for them. Minorities are made to ride the popularity of white characters which keeps the power in the hands of Caucasian culture. Any race or gender swapped character is seen as a dollar store version of the original. Blade played by Wesley Snipes is more powerful than Superman played by Michael B. Jordan. The power is in minorities leading their own franchises not being donated the keys to established white franchises. Simply race swapping white characters does nothing to fix the lack of minority characters in films and television. Disney knows who the real Snow White is and that is all that matters. They know this Latina version is never going to be on the same level with the real Snow White. Six months from now no one will be talking about the Latina dollar store version.
@suezcontours6653 Two things. First, how do you know what I watch? Secondly, do stories about all kinds of different cultures exist? Of course. But the discussion here is specifically about Disney, who, instead of taking characters of diverse backgrounds and writing new stories specifically to those characters. They have instead decided to take their existing IP and change the look of the characters to show cultural diversity. They are attempting to get credit for checking off a box, but not understanding why the box to be checked exists in the first place.
I'm black, the thing that annoyed me about little mermaid was the promotion behind it came off as pandering. About 80 percent of the promotion behind the movie was about Ariel being black. Interviews with the cast talking about inclusiveness and diversity, and videos of young black girls watching the trailer on tv. Barely any mention of the characters and the issues they'd face in the movie. It's cool to talk about diversity in the promotion, but when that's a majority of the promotion behind the movie. It just comes off as pandering.
Naw that's was the internet playing into it hardcore and Disney seeing reactions and pushing it harder cuz engagement is engagement and it got really really engaged if you know what I mean lol. We live in an attention world whether it's good or bad.
Yeah any publicity is good publicity, I dislike hate watching cause I'm afraid of the Streisand effect. I do belive it's gonna hurt Disney in the long run though, the reason the remakes made money was because of the nostalgia and the Disney name attached to it, but Disney has been slowly ruining their reputation with each shallow remake, their brand is not synonymous with magic anymore, people will eventually see they are not worth time anymore.
@@ameer781 well that's because that's all a lot of people care about unfortunately. For some reason people are more worried about a fictional characters skin color or sexuality when it adds nothing to the story instead of wondering what type of saif character will be or the story and etc. For some reason, some people act like they can't watch something if said character isn't a poc or gay, sure it's nice to have representations but it's more to the character. I'm half Hispanic and black.. I feel more represented by the character that I feel like I can relate more based off their reactions or the choices they make in certain situations regardless of color or sexuality
also I found it funny how it was all a diversified cast except for Prince Eric. Like Disney said we'll give ya your black mermaid but a black prince?? Woah there buddy 😂
The problem I have is that they take white known faces and paint them black. I'm not excepting that as diversity and I never will. It's insulting really. That's saying that us as blacks can't sell off of our own stories. If anything they could've gave us something original. Luke they just now did on Disney plus with kizazi moto. Other than that..I thinks it's fucked up. It's insulting. I don't want a black ariel I don't want a black captain America. I don't want leftovers. We deserve our own.
As an Asian I appreciate you bringing up our lack of any representation. It’s like they’re trying to not have us on screen unless it’s a stereotypical Asian role like the guru or scientist.
Halley Bailey was pleasant and she didn’t deserve the issues she got. The chick playing Snow White is just smug and being very unlikable in her interviews. Curios to see how the film does financially when it comes out.
@@jasonpeet6198 I'm not sure that you've actually paid attention to the performance of those films if your read is that they've done poorly. Four of them have grossed over a billion and Jungle Book was just shy.
Thank you for making light on Disney diversity. I am part Arab and Persian with my mother hailing from Jordan and my father hailing from Iran. When they were releasing the live action version of Aladdin I was excited since Aladdin is my favorite Disney film and they we’re going to make a more authentic diverse Aladdin film. When I watched the film I was pissed off. It is a misrepresentation of the culture while pretending they are being progressive and embracing other cultures. The film happens to seem more Indianan than Arabian even though in the beginning of the movie they sing Arabian nights. The movie even has a Bollywood dance scene in the end which is not Arabian. The director for the film is Guy Ritchie which is a director I like but someone from England which is the last person I want to represent my culture. The writers are also not Arabian and the diverse cast consists Egypt (Mena Massoud), India (Naomi Scott), Tunisia (Marwan Kenzari), Turkey (Numan Acar) and Iran (Navid Negahban and Nasim Pedrad). Out of this cast the only people who can be considered Arab is Mena Massoud and Marwan Kenzari although both countries are from North Africa and not where the story is set. I don’t think the entire cast and crew have to be Arabian. I loved Will Smith as the genie, but when Disney claims being diverse and has a nearly complete inaccurate diverse cast that bothers me. I would rather have a white washed cast that makes no claims in being diverse. I like the animated film more because they are not trying to pretend to be diverse and inclusive. It also helps that the film comes from the 90s which is a complete different time. Disney just fakes their diversity which is worse than not trying to be diverse. Btw Snow White is a 19th century German folk tale so they are misrepresenting the Germans with the Snow White cast. I can’t say that bothers me, but it’s something to think about
I noticed that too, I traveled a lot in my life so I'm very lucky to understand different cultures. I think I was watching the prince Ali song and I was like "when did Arabs ever use elephants in celebrations? I thought that was Indians" and I think I saw Morrocan architecture or art or something which has Arabic influences but is very distinct from what's on the Arabian peninsula. Like you said you're Persian. Persian art and architecture is very different from Arabic but most westerners think Persians are Arabs and probably Indian too. Like all brown people from Morocco to Bangladesh are essentially the same.
29:53 from what i remember, that actress Kelly Marie Tran pretty much got bullied off social media. Had a lot of people going after her in her DMs or something. Way more for her to handle. I think she ended up deleting a bunch of her social media profiles. And I think becasue her character really wasn't liked all that well, like you said, she got downgraded and barely utilized in the finale. Also that last movie wasn't really all that great.
That honestly breaks my heart to this day. I didn't like the character and how she was used, but I lay that at Rian Johnson's feet. Not Kelly's. The girl had a job to do and she did it well. People get weird about actors, man. It reminds me of how the kid who played Joffrey in Game of Thrones was treated.
Tbh, I remember back in 2016, Josh McDermitt on Walking Dead he played Eugene Porter. He literally quit twitter as people were threatning his life for "Betraying Rick". This vitriol sadly probably has existed since forever but fans really get over the top when they threaten someone's life over actions a *character* does. I know Jeffrey Dean Morgan still has random fans tell him they hate him for Glenn's death. There is a respect that is missing for actors and the lines between fiction and reality are blurred as fuck. Not an excuse tho. Its BS How fandoms act.
I liked Moses Ingrams character in Obi-Wan. The only problem I had was them making her redeemable. I think her character arc would've been so much better if she was the main antagonist of Obi Wan instead of this undercover Jedi looking to assassinate Darth Vader for revenge, which felt so cliche.
Halle Bailey did nothing wrong, but goofy folks on the Internt jumped her. I don't mind folks calling out Disney BS, but the awful comments and mean spirit meme towards Halle wasn't called for.
@@cashewnuttel9054 you would think. The way Disney did BP dirty. I wasn't surprised by the Little Mermaid. It's bad enough dealing with goofy folks online, but multi-billion dollar company hiding Halle Bailey from the Chinese market.
pretty much. Anyone who didn't see this from day one is fooling themselves. Go ahead, make your movies, some good , some bad, but don't tell me it isn't pandering and brownie points,..lol.
@@lexis4490 I'm mean by comparison Disney actually was, especially on the Disney channel with animated features, then and now, kind of think of it. It's just more corporate meddling with the feature films.
It not pandering because audiences of colour are not demanding this, it is tokenism where they try and use to diversity to sell a mediocre product. Hollywood is white dominated industry and they have contempt for audiences of colour. I remember the Sony emails where Amy Pascal and other big producer were laughing via emails at how bad the movies where they were making for black audiences with black leads. So we have a mediocre script, let’s race bend the character to get more viewers for this mediocre film. Black audiences are just as if not more demanding than white audiences, and just having a black lead character on any old crap is not enough. Black Panther and Spider-verse movies do well because they a great stories with lead black characters. Hollywood is too lazy and can’t be bother to make great stories about black people, they would rather race bend mediocre stories to virtue signal.
Growing up as a physically disabled woman (i walk with crutches) really messed with my self esteem when all media representation was frail children as secondary characters, never seen romantically, or if they somehow get a relationship, its 99% a man with an able bodied woman. So... This video hits so many valid points to me personally. Speaks volumes that my favorite Disney characters are Belle, Beast and Quasimodo hah
To me it's not complicated at all. If something already exists that people already love then don't change the things that made it popular. Either make something original or change something that isn't that popular. When you're changing something with millions of fans then you are asking for complaints and disinterest.
No, it's not complicated at all. Let's face it, this movie's going to be trash and barely anyone will watch it. It's obvious from those pictures alone it's going to be some incredibly pandering crap.
Disney has a history of racism but pats themselves on the back for a "diverse" cast, then they kick out dwarf actors from one of the few films that they have a chance at getting work in.
I disagree with your assessment of the triangle in Hunchback. A lot of people argue that the reason Esmeralda and Phoebus were the best fit was because of all the three guys who were in love with her, Phoebus was the one who actually loved her for her and treated her like a person. Frollo was lusting after her and objectifying her, while Quasimodo was idolizing her. She wasn't a person with flaws, she was this angel that is first real woman who's ever actually spoken to him or treated him kindly. Phoebus didn't come into that sanctuary to do any of those things (objectify or idolize). He legit wanted to meet her and talk to her. At the same time, Esmeralda was falling for him when she saw how his compassion for others was more important than his rank and position. Imagine if in Nell, it was a love story between Liam Neeson and the mentally impaired, feral Jodie Foster. I don't think that would've worked. Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson were the couple that made sense.
@oliviarogers2808 Yeah, you do tend to idolize a person when you first fall in love with them. It's not honest to think when you first in love with you are going to immediately love someone as they actually are from the beginning, I think that kind of love takes time.
The dwarves were the heroes though. They fought the Queen or at least went after her and we’re the cause of her death. In fact every male character in here was positive. The huntsman spared her because she was beautiful and innocent, the prince brought her back from the “dead” and the dwarves took her in and fought the queen. Snow was the only one that wasn’t useful. Even the Queen was resourceful and strong. All they had to do was tweak Snows character to be a stronger leader, but they fundamentally changed the entire story.
Maybe that’s because that’s the main point of the story. A tortured innocent victim which happened to be a female. The thing is to portray that can be considered offensive today.
Korey I wish you played more of that clip of Rachel. She was proclaiming how the prince does not save the day here. It’s all about her being a leader and Gal Gadot betting in on it.
I’m all for female empowerment and stuff like that but I miss romance stories. Unapologetic romance stories. You can be empowered and want to be with someone. To cherish their everything. I really want to watch a fantasy epic centered around a romance where the two are treated as equals as they get to know and fall in love with each other.
I think the genre of romance can be larger and deeper than we give it credit for but that’s because much of it is more about achieving a relationship than studying the relationship itself. Honestly I think movies about friendship do this better by accident.
If you’re willing to give another form of media a try, there’s a manga series called Snow White with the Red Hair that’s basically what you mentioned. It does the romance really well and the main character is one I’d consider as female empowerment. There’s also the anime that I highly recommend watching first and continue on with reading the rest of the story.
Yeah, I hate how these dumb movies make guys think all feminists hate men and don't want to have sex with them. Wouldn't that make feminists lesbian or something?
It's really refreshing to hear your take on this because, although I agree with a lot that is being said about this online, the vast majority of people making videos about it are so angry that I'm almost ashamed to share their opinions.
I assume you've fallen into the far right rabbit-hole? That's where a lot of the angry videos regarding Disney are. They are also usually the ones to cry "woke" too.
I agree, it feels like you can't just say "this lady needs to have her mouth sewn shut and disney has become so lazy that now it's actually hurting how the average person views them because their movies are incredibly substandard the past 5+ years." You either need to go all in on how these movies are ruining western society or pretend like the movies are great when everyone knows they're pretty bad at best.
If Disney was serious about diversity, they'd start with looks. Why must the lead role always be played by a beauty queen. Where's ugly Betty? Or the 'less than gorgeous' people who could kick the crap out of these roles? Diversity is also skin deep
My father marched with Dr King, one of my parents is Republican and the other is Democratic, one of my brothers is gay, and I a straight male that has been crossdressing since BRUCE Jenner was on the cover of cereal boxes. They’re pandering. There ARE lots of black fairy tales and stories that could be made into movies, from king Sundiata to Queen Calafia (who had an army of griffins!). Then again, race swapping is an easy move without experimenting on new ideas. Long as people talk about it, good or bad, its free advertising for Disney. Like now.
I’m going to have to disagree on your point about the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Quasi was told his entire life that he was a monster and that no one would accept him, and by the end of the movie, he’s hailed as a hero. No, he doesn’t “get the girl”, but he’s not alone. He has Esmerelda and Phoebus, he has friends, and that’s not something to write off.
Christ, she took her insults against the original straight out of those Buzzfeed articles that judge everything by current standards and barely take time to understand the movie outside of hot takes and gatcha headlines. LOL does she ship Jack Frost and Elsa in her spare time 😂 It's a product of its time but it's a classic because it's a FAIRY TIME. Not a documentary or a story trying to be serious to deliver a message, it's a FAIRY Tale and just like a Fairy tale just meant to be entertaining. I don't get how we have these judgemental takes YET Twilight, 50 Shades of Grey and 365 Days of rape are given a pass as "fantasy for women" yet those movies are dead serious about portraying their toxic relationships as positive role models without a hint of self awareness.
The princes in the old Disney movies are so sweet. And they’re so pure and innocent in the way they love their girls. Yet nowadays women get crazy ass abusers as leads. ☹️
I love this nuaned take on the whole issue! One issue I think in Disney's case that was glossed over is that it's not just "stunt casting". It's efficient stunt casting. By all accounts, Halle Bailey was a very good choice for Ariel in that she can really sing (unlike Emma Watson as Belle, who was more famous, but less skilled in that area). Her musical background runs deep. BUUUUUT, despite her talent, she is not a household name like Emma Watson, Scarlett Johansson or (funnily enough) Halle Berry. She's an up-and-comer, and would therefore be much cheaper than others to hire. It's pretty much how they cast the new generation Star Wars movies. And again, it's a great way for up and comers to get work, but it's also pretty clear they do it in these big expensive IP projects because its saves money and the brand itself is the draw. But the Disney-Live Action brand is waning and people are losing interest, so in order to drum up interest (while staying cost-effective) they are swapping out the traditional white roles in a seemingly random way (again, her name is literally Snow White, and there are literally 7 dwarves...) I think most people are on board with race-swapping (that ISN'T whitewashing...) as long as it showcases talented actors and/or it gives the story new meaning. When it just feels like you're filling out a diversity quota to check a box and literally nothing else, then it does feel like (I can't believe I'm saying this...) woke pandering.
Whites have been whitewashing black people's stories for centuries. Jesus isn't white. Egyptians aren't white. Also I haven't heard white critics crying about rebooted Foreign films remade with white actors like Old Boy and The Departed. So stop your double standards. They've BEEN replacing Asian and Latin characters with white people for DECADES.
@@MerlynSheldon Raceswapping has to do with FICTION and it's in response to white washing of the past (corrective narrative). And white washing is usually in regards to REAL LIFE HISTORY. Look, I’m gonna be honest, I love DT, they’re fun and I agree most of the time with them. While I do agree with their arguments here, I think their take on the Hunchback of Notre Dame is dead wrong. If the main takeaway was that Quasimodo needed to win the girl by the end is a serious misinterpretation of what his arc actually is. It’s okay if Quasi didn’t win the girl, because that isn’t what he needed; He needed self-love. For all of his life, Quasi was told by his guardian that he was a monster and he believed it. He was groomed to hate himself, which served to chain him to the walls of the bell towers. But even then, he has a desire to be amongst the townspeople and experience life. After his attempt to escape turned into a public humiliation, Quasi met and befriended Esmeralda, the first person who treats him like a human. He developed one-sided feelings for her, which reveals a core flaw of Quasi transpired from years of psychological torment: his idolization of people. While this love is more sweet and nowhere near as self-destructive and depraved as Frollo’s lust, it wasn’t healthy for Quasimodo. He was still idolizing someone. If he were to grow, Quasi needed to have his heart broken. I find this insanely subversive for the protagonist to come out not getting the girl, which is usually portrayed as a loss for any other movie. Here it’s growth for Quasi, because his story is about self-discovery and discovering the toxicity of Frollo and gaining acceptance for himself. Want a movie where he does get the girl? The direct-to-home abomination that is Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 would like a word with you.
It's hard to listen to them sometimes, their opinions are so misinformed. Like they're movie critics yet they miss so many details or don't think about their opinions or ideas further. Very frustrating
if you think about it every male character in snow-white defends this princess: the huntsman allows her to run, the miners take her in and the prince falls in love with her/kisses her
Like i said with this actress, she comes off very arrogant, entitled and snobbish as if she's made it big time in Hollywood. Shes been in two big movies which both flopped, outside of her fans nobody talks or even brings her up as someone to watch for. She seems really full of herself especially when she started going after Jeremy Renner and accusing him of things for no reason. If anything shes gonna hurt the movie even further and hopefully it will be something to humble her down a few notches
She seems like she has a big ego for someone who’s barley in anything “big”. Have y’all seen her interview with jimmy Kimmel she sounds so egoistic she mentioned how the movie or ride scared her as a kid yet she still rides it when she goes to Disney and complains when people supposedly take picture of her when she’s waiting in line for the ride.
@@sewgeekdesigns9113 honestly she better hopes this movie don't flop because it wouldn't be beneath Disney to point fingers at her for the reason for it failing (even tho she is playing a part in it ) and having her being dumped from Hollywood and being stuck in straight to home movies.
Seems like Hollywood also has a habit of hiring actors and creatives who actively hate the source material they're hired to represent, and also hold people who like the source material in contempt. Then they spend time agitating the og fans and dressing down the source material. Not exactly a recipe for success or for building good will, but I guess stirring up controversy gets people talking.
That might be the funniest segue into a sponsored read I've ever seen. The only thing that would have made it better is if Hello Fresh happened to feature an apple dessert on the front of its website.
I’m a POC male. I agree. The best way to promote diversity is telling original stories and do NOT make it a big deal. In Smile, the white main character, a white woman no less, had a black fiancé. In Love Hard (definitely check it out), Jimmy O. Yang’s love interest is Nina Dobrev and they are very convincing together. So to use the anti-woke word, what Disney does is “pandering.”
Wrong they have tons of original stories they give one or 2 trailers and with no engagement they throw it aside. This idea original stories bring in money is bs. Hell if miles Morales wasn't Spider-Man no one would have given that any time of day.
Nobody had an issue with diverse characters until it became the entire focus. I don't need a character to look like me, I need a character that makes sense to me. And they're going full on in the other direction.
@@blackmcbain3145those did well on streaming box office they were floops. And even after those there are tons of original stories on Disney plus that get no love or attention. No one is looking for original stories the formula is bullshit so Disney went to what they know makes money classics and discourse.
I come from a family of scholars and people who just loved learning and seeing the history of things as a whole. they don't care too much about trends with generations and kids but one of their biggest complaints, especially my father, is how they've watched each generation progressingly be unaware or even outright diss things that have come before them that have quite a significance and decline to learn the history about things almost as a quest to point out if something is problematic or not. picking apart a storyline for a movie in the 1930s without acknowleding how much of an amazing breakthrough it was for animation is on brand. you guys did a video that was talking about Judy Garland in blackface the year before doing Wizard of OZ and that clip made it's way through Twitter pointing out how it wasn't long ago. it was actually a very long time ago knowing that she was a teenager and would've been 101 this year. Hollywood also worked very differently to the point the government had to step in due to it being a monopoly. the way we joke about how Tyler Perry shoots movies is how old Hollywood ran and you couldn't really turn down projects if you wanted stardom. it's always easy to point out problematic things in media but pointing it out without the context and understanding of "why" and where society was at the point doesn't make you woke or educated. it makes you smug as hell with a "holier than though" complex.
The way Snow White’s new actress describes her wanting to be in a strong position of power instead of being in love sounds almost something like what a villain would want. The original Disney Snow White was a strong woman in her own way, and a way I think many have forgotten to be: being kind to others. This isn’t my Snow White. I’m tired of these lazy live-action remakes. I want original stories again, not something made for an agenda.
The actors condescending tone ain’t helping either. When she said “the prince is not coming to help, in fact all his scenes could get deleted” like bruh why talking shit?
They do the bare minimum and expect praise, all their marketing is always about the race of the actors and not their acting talent, it's unnecessary, they could just make original poc characters and give them their own story. What I hate the most is that they use the diversity of the cast as a shield against any criticism. And that girl really needs to read the room more, I don't believe actors need to love all parts they play but when an actor enjoys the role it shows very easily, when they hate the role is just as easy to see. I hope she's professional enough to play the role well but now I just think she's gonna phone it in,so why should I even watch the movie?
Honey, THE INTERNET obsessed over Halle's skin color/ complexion. Disney didn't mention Ariel being the first black mermaid. The internet attacked her, and Disney defended Halle and Halle showed how much of a good choice she was
@@scarlett19b White women truly think that they're talented? Have you been living under a rock lately? Coco Gauff, Beyonce and Meghan Markle have humbled you lot. White women are the least talented because they've been handed things in the West for hundreds of years simply for existing. That's why they weaponize their tears when they lose like Laura Siegemund. Rather than accept her defeat she became a sore loser. White Feminism isn't about equality, you want power.
Meh, only reason Snow White is appreciated is for its history in animation and being the first feature length animated movie. Outside of that, I rarely see anyone refer to it as their favorite Disney movie since there's no real character or story to latch onto.
Think of all the time & resources that was wasted on these live action Disney remakes, they could have used them to make new stories with a diverse cast, infact my local cinema is re-releasing the old animated features which begs the question why Disney didn't bother to do that in the 1st place?
About the whale: I understand not wanting to cast someone someone who's 600+Ibs. Someone in that condition simply cannot even normal things easily. Imagine trying to do things like retakes when you have an actor who has to struggle to move 30 ft.
Alex Flinn, an author who writes fairytale retellings, actually flipped roles and in her Snow White book made the dwarf character the main love interest.
Neil Gaiman did a good one. Snow White was a vampire, the "evil Queen" was executed by the town because she tried to warn the people. The Prince actually went to bed with the Queen but couldn't do it because he had a thing for corpses... you know the rest. Also, the dwarves were like goblins or orcs or something.
As for the dwarf argument.... peter has made his money. Dont stop others from making theirs. .. also .. didnt peter D play boliver trask in x men?? That character was never written as a dwarf yet he got the role.. crazy.
I have three example of Disney diversity interracial double standards. 1. Finn and Rey Star Wars. In the original script they were clear love interest, they hire John Boyega and suddenly write out all the romantic scenes. One of the writers of the accompanying novel said he was told by Disney executives not to write any romance between the characters. And because they were worried people were likely to potential romance between Rey and Finn, they separated the characters in the second film and insert a women of colour to be Finn’s new love interest. 2. Disney’s Nutcracker. They should have renamed the movie No Nut Black Man. If you know the story of the Nutcracker it is meant to be romantic story between a young woman and her Nutcracker solider. They cast a black actor to be the Nutcracker and suddenly he was the most asexual Nutcracker caught on film, with zero romance, that goes against the source material and it has exactly the same dynamic as Rey and Finn, where the white girl is the Mary Sue doing everything and black guy is just there for the ride. 3. Eternals. This is the most egregious example. Disney and Marvel tried to pat themselves on the back for their faux diversity. In that movie every white male character had a woman of colour as a love interest, they made the black character gay, a common trope of removing a black male character as a romantic threat and made the two Asian male characters asexual with no love interest. I just remind you that Eternals was written by three white me, despite the diversity of the cast and you could see that immediately. I feel this is Hollywood, white male dominated industry trying to social engineer. Because statistically white women with black men is more common in the USA than white men with black women, but Hollywood treats Black men with white women as taboo and not mainstream, but has no problem representing white male characters with women of colour in mainstream films. It is like they don’t want to promote black men as attractive to white girls, but want to promote white men as the object of desire to girls of colour. This is why I love Ryan Reynolds because he constantly pokes fun of the racist Hollywood double standard of making Black male characters asexual next to a white male lead character by making sure the male character of colour in his movies are getting a lot sex action, while pointing out how asexual he is at the same time, making the point that how rare it is to see the white male character as the asexual sidekick.
Exactly this. And at least on the internet, that social conditioning is partially working. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people say “movies are filled to the brim with black guys dating white girls, but you almost never see the reverse where it’s a white guy dating a black or Asian girl!” Despite the fact that anyone who looks into can clearly see that’s absurd! I can think of maybe ONE major Hollywood movie with a black man and white woman romance where it’s not about their race and isn’t portrayed negatively, and that’s Focus. A WILL SMITH movie! Where to count major Hollywood movies where a white dates a black woman, I’d have to make a spreadsheet, cause Imma be at that shit all day. I swear sometimes I feel like I’m taking crazy pills seeing some of these biased discussions online.
@@Arander92 You are not taking the crazy pills because this clearly an American entertainment issue. I’m British and there were four very popular British TV shows that were remade by American TV companies. They were the shows Red Dwarf, Prime Suspect, Utopia and Ghosts. All these British shows had one thing in common either Black male lead character in a relationship with a white female character or a lead white female character in an relationship with a black male character. In all the American remakes of these shows they removed the black male character. They either whitewashed the character as they did for the American version of Red Dwarf, Prime Suspect and Utopia or in CBS Ghosts they changed the black character Indian because they don’t want to show a happily married black man with a white woman. Some of those shows were in the 1990s, so maybe they had a slight excuse because Hollywood wasn’t that progressive, but the Utopia remake was made in 2019 and Ghosts 2020. What made the Utopia race change more inexplicable was in the British version the character being black was a major part of plot because it was about a white supremacy scientist trying to wipe out the population of the world, but his daughter had an attraction to this black guy. White American male Hollywood can’t have a black guy as the object of desire for two white women, so in the USA version of the show they make the black male character white and make the white female characters black, so they are both competing for the love of a white man. This inexplicable change messed with a major plot point of the British shows, and showed me how racist so called liberal Hollywood is.

I get it some people see Snow White as out dated, however even back then Disney they wanted to do a simple story to fine tune the new techniques to animate the film. They wanted to do so much with the film at first, but had to pull back. Which I feel a lot of film are missing today because we make less simple films anymore, and have to many films with large message to the point it’s not special anymore. It’s crazy how parts of Disney and snobs butcher these classics animated films, and animators. The foundation of Disney, and that helped the animation industry for years decades. you needed these outdated film to get the great films we have now. It’s crazy I’m not even a huge fan of Disney.
They could have made anything straight and white and still had beloved cherished classics though. It was revolutionary but it was still pandering to straight white Christian men. I'm so glad they're adding nuance. Sleeping Beauty shouldn't be a side character in her own story, none of the damsels in distress are actually 3 dimensional characters
I'm Black and I'll say that most of these fairy tale characters could probably be played by any woman of any race, with the exception of Snow White, given that her name literally refers to how pale she is. With that said, I wish Disney would develop movies from ethnic folktales that have not been explored. I always thought a Disney movie about Anansi The Spider with an all Black cast would be very interesting to develop.
Because instead of just making new stories that can stand on their own, Disney thinks all they need to do is change the race of an established character to get butts in seats, effectively treating the person and their skin color like a prop. That should be insulting.
They make new diverse stories all the time. You people are the problem. MONEY talks and unfortunately people gravitate to what's familiar. And plenty of whites have admitted to not relating to people who don't look like them. Quentin Tarantino made Jackie Brown and Robert De Niro directed A Bronx Tale - 2 Italian dudes told better diverse stories with fleshed out black characters
The funny thing is I remember when the Beauty and the Beast remake came out and they were pushing the advertising about LeFou being gay. Fast forward to present day and the OG Beauty and the Beast gets a re-release. It really is just a marketing thing.
Who the hell is complaining about Hilary Swank in the Boys Don’t Cry?! The whole point is she was playing a woman passing as a man and it was based on a true story. Korey just be saying stuff.🙄
I think the issue with the internet is that it makes every complain seem like it's backed by a whole lot more people than it actually is. Yes, there are probably people complaining about the casting in Boys Don't Cry but it's probably what?.......... 20 people in actuality?
Latina and feminist here! I disagree with Zegler's comments on Snow White not being "girl power" enough or whatever. While there are some aspects some might find "outdated", the movie is based on an old German fairytale and they were adapting that story for animation. Plus the movie is a giant leap forward for animation, it is an artistic achievement with amazing character design and backgrounds that really evoke the feeling of a fairytale. Dismissing Snow White from the 1937 movie as "dumb and with no power" is also kinda fucked up, the movie actually shows us that her step mother abuses her and treats her like crap. So when people say "why doesn't she just fight back" they are being dismissive of how abuse works and how it's hard for victims to escape. It is really a character of her strengths that despite some of her hardships, she is able to remain kind in a not so kind world. And it is satisfying when she gets her well deserved happy ending! Perhaps thats why so many people liked it during the Great Depression, It provided a form of escapism with its fairytale world and was also very hopeful. And again, the movie came out in 1937, there's obviously gonna be outdated stuff in it! It's really not fair to judge it by today's standards. Also Zegler is like 3/4ths white. she has a Latina grandma but that's it. IDK why Disney gets praised for casting when they stay being colorist as hell!!! And I want to support their original stories instead of this lazy remake crap. They put zero effort into those movies instead of promoting their animation like the upcoming "wish" movie
Korey was complaining last week about the cliches and stereotypes in The Blind Side. Well there might be stereotypes and cliches in Snow White that some are uncomfortable with as well.
@@SmartDave60 He absolutely had a point. Blind Side made the black character look and act stupid when the person in real life is not like that at all. This is coming from someone like me who also didn't like the movie back in the day. The Blind Side always rubbed me the wrong way and I never knew why until now.
I really wanted FIN to get with Rey, they set it up, they had great chemistry; but just like his role in the series, they bait and switched him and sidelined him. They wasted him, and he was the strongest actor there.
That's fair, I don't think I've seen it in full since I was like 6 years old. It was back when Disney was still polishing their animation style and were just doing simple straightforward stories. They weren't trying to make like a lifetime classic, it became that because it was so groundbreaking for its time. That and the dwarves are pretty much the only reason anyone remembers it. The true protagonists. XD
I kinda point the finger at “Shrek” for starting this mind of condescending attitude towards fairytales. Like, it’s one thing to subvert the tropes in a new story, but it’s way of crapping on the older stories has kinda tainted the perception of all the younger kids who grew up with it.
The changing of a character's race doesn't make me angry, but it doesn't impress me either. It just comes off to me like they're giving minorities hand-me-down roles and then acting like they're doing something revolutionary to sell tickets.
@@SteelSpursThat's kind of bad take. With your logic if someone auditioned for a role and KILLED it, they would be denied the role solely based off race. Race shouldn't matter as long as the best person gets the role.
Maybe it's because they refuse to accept the reality that the whole world, especially historically, isn't populated the same way the metropolitan coastal cities they live in are. But it does come off as malicious when they cast an olive skinned girl to play a character whose defining physical characteristic is her exceptional paleness. She is _the palest of them all,_ since that's literally what fair means.

32:15 yeah, thank you for bringing the dwarves part up. although there was one adaptation of Snow White I recall that was a little different with the dwarves. I know there was one dwarf that wasn't a dwarf he was just a really tall guy. And this group of dwarves traveled by rainbow kind of like power rangers. This version I think was from the late 90s early 2000s and was a part of that TV Movie wave that Hallmark/Artissan was doing back then. I remember Kristin Kreuk was Snow White in it. Looked it up. Nah all their old straight white stuff was really insensitive or problematic. Turns out, conservative straight white men tell misogynistic stories where the women are a victim stumbling thru their own story instead of forming it.
The crazy part is-until I read this, the animation STILL holds up REALLY WELL and I had NO IDEA the original film was 86 YEARS OLD at this point.
The Snow White animation is beautiful.
I think this was meant to inspire people following the Great Depression.
How to destroy your movie before it even comes out

The only "weird" part from the original tale was the Prince randomly coming out to finish her song. But after that, he serenaded her and she reciprocated by sending a literal flying kiss through a dove that blushed before delivering a peck to the prince. I don't get why romance and wanting romance is seen as disempowering, especially when it's something that leans towards women's interest. What's disempowering is denying what you truly want to put up a facade that you're superficially "strong and independent". You'll just end up miserable and bitter.
🗣️SCREAM this to hateful women who deny why they're mad at the world. Romance is needed. I know I'm here for it. ❤
This is literally how I think of it too, why do Disney Princesses have to be SHE-E-O's now?
I don't think there's some grand conspiracy or anything, but our culture is so weird with the "I don't need anyone but me" attitude. It's like they're trying to make women into the worst guy you know.

They remake movies to keep the rights to these tales for as long as possible.
@@goglux2people don't get that.

Disney could make original stories about minority (like they did with the Princess and the Frog) but they don't and I can only think of a few possible reasons why:
1. Hollywood is risk-adverse because they no longer have DVD sales so they remake characters the way they remake movies
2. They're remaking characters to purposely cause controversy since controversy sells. Half that people will rant about it (thereby giving them free promotion) then the other side will respond by going to see the movie to support it. This adds to the culture war and divides us further. They could have their cake and eat it too if they made original characters.
3. Progressive points with minimum effort
I think diversity in Hollywood is good but it should be original stories.
Now that I think about it, it’s interesting that they’re making all these white characters black, but no Princess and the Frog remake? 😂
Ya just trying to stir up controversy

The prince is barely in the film. He sings a love song then he saves her at the end when he randomly finds her dying. He's not hiding being a bush stalking her
Yup
The animation on Snow White is amazing when you realize it’s almost 100 years old
… and the first feature length animated movie. It set the standard.

Unfortunately it seems they still don't understand that good writing and compelling characters can sell just as well too 🤦🏾♀️
we're in the era of remakes and prequels
Diverse stories exist. YOU DONT" WATCH THEM
@suezcontours6653 Two things.

@shepardsp1e842 Which games? Please I must know! 😩

Yeah, even though I wouldn’t count what she says as controversial, it’s still stupid what she said.
But the Disney-Live Action brand is waning and people are losing interest, so in order to drum up interest (while staying cost-effective) they are swapping out the traditional white roles in a seemingly random way (again, her name is literally Snow White, and there are literally 7 dwarves...)
I think most people are on board with race-swapping (that ISN'T whitewashing...) as long as it showcases talented actors and/or it gives the story new meaning.
Strange that you're OK with race swapping, but not OK with white washing. 😂
Hollywood also worked very differently to the point the government had to step in due to it being a monopoly. the way we joke about how Tyler Perry shoots movies is how old Hollywood ran and you couldn't really turn down projects if you wanted stardom. it's always easy to point out problematic things in media but pointing it out without the context and understanding of "why" and where society was at the point doesn't make you woke or educated. it makes you smug as hell with a "holier than though" complex.
Ate That ❤
The way Snow White’s new actress describes her wanting to be in a strong position of power instead of being in love sounds almost something like what a villain would want. The original Disney Snow White was a strong woman in her own way, and a way I think many have forgotten to be: being kind to others.
This isn’t my Snow White. I’m tired of these lazy live-action remakes. I want original stories again, not something made for an agenda.
I'm so glad you guys addressed the John Boyega Star Wars controversy. 🙂
All she really did was give people, who were already screaming "woke", an excuse to complain even more.

Which brings engagement which brings views and money and attention. They fall for it Everytime and always will.
It's all by design.
That's putting it lightly. The silly folks will have a field day with this nonsense.
The actors condescending tone ain’t helping either. When she said “the prince is not coming to help, in fact all his scenes could get deleted” like bruh why talking shit?
Exactly, she comes off arrogant asf as if she's really known.
Halle Bailey was a good cast, though. I can't imagine anyone doing a better job. Emma Watson sucked as Belle (no hate to the actress)
It's like Double Toasted is going backwards, Kory always talking about diversity in things but now criticizing it because it's unpopular. ???
The problem with only caring about a character's complexion is you can only make them skin deep.
Honey, THE INTERNET obsessed over Halle's skin color/ complexion. Disney didn't mention Ariel being the first black mermaid. The internet attacked her, and Disney defended Halle and Halle showed how much of a good choice she was

Hello Fresh is also available in AUS btw
How they didnt cast Dinklage as Grumpy and Wee Man as Dopey is beyond me
About the whale: I understand not wanting to cast someone someone who's 600+Ibs.

It’s called Snow, Glass, Apples, btw.
That’s a unique take on the story

And the silly thing is Fox was trying HARD to have the OG trilogy & the prequel quadrilogy in the same universe before the Disney buyout.
Facts!!!
Wow, I hope you seek therapy

Ooooook
This guy gets it
They could have made anything straight and white and still had beloved cherished classics though.
Disney is not for us
But the prince didn't know kissing her would wake her up. It's necrophilia interrupted.
Her attitude about the whole thing is the turn off. Seems very entitled for a relatively unknown actress.
"It's Hollywood baby ;)" says the girl who only made 3 movies and now acts like she's Jennifer Aniston lmao
Because instead of just making new stories that can stand on their own, Disney thinks all they need to do is change the race of an established character to get butts in seats, effectively treating the person and their skin color like a prop. That should be insulting.
It is insulting. Exactly my thinking!
"this aint what I ordered" lmaooo
That transition to Hello Fresh killed me 🤣🤣
Who the hell is complaining about Hilary Swank in the Boys Don’t Cry?!

Unpopular opinion: besides the AMAZING (for its time) animation & the songs, Snow White's story is pretty mediocre at best.
pretty sure thats the popular opinion
I mean Avatar is the best selling movie, and its dances with smurfs.
Nah, only reason people respect it is, because it was the first one and started the whole Disney company.
XD
Yeah it’s pretty bland. There’s room for interpretation
I kinda point the finger at “Shrek” for starting this mind of condescending attitude towards fairytales. Like, it’s one thing to subvert the tropes in a new story, but it’s way of crapping on the older stories has kinda tainted the perception of all the younger kids who grew up with it.

Snow White and The Huntsman 2012 was badass, that’s how you make a cinematic fairy tale.

The changing of a character's race doesn't make me angry, but it doesn't impress me either. It just comes off to me like they're giving minorities hand-me-down roles and then acting like they're doing something revolutionary to sell tickets.

I feel like I'm crazy when I say this to people and they respond with "their skin color doesn't matter". If it doesn't matter, why bother changing it?
So it does make you angry and you can't see the good in saying "anyone can be Ariel, go watch both versions of the film"
