The thing with this movie is it felt like a lecture. I remember someone saying Kenya Barris writes things to teach white people on what it's like to be black. Black-ish, Black AF, this movie. All of them have the black characters telling stupid white characters "we do this because of slavery. We do that because of your people..." Like when you watch a Tyler Perry movie, you expect to go to church. You watch a Kenya Barris project and expect the scene to suddenly stop to go on about being black. People having a great time and suddenly "you know a black man invented the remote control and the traffic light?" Like its great to learn about the culture. Some things I didn't even know. But Kenya just straight up throws a cinder block at you

    • @levijetkins7423

Completely agree. There is no subtlety. The message is constantly being told to you instead of being shown. Also the characters are all one dementional stereotypes and no one comes across as likeable.
It also seems like Kenya's approach to making a film about the culture is to just throw endless amounts of cultural references that don't really fit and are just there to say "look how cultured I am".

    - Total lack of chemistry between Hill/ London.
    - The transitions between scenes were terrible.
    - The whole cocaine scenario.
    - The basketball scene where Jonah Hill(who co-wrote the movie) is secretly totally AWESOME at pick-up basketball.
    - Julia Louis Dreyfus manages to have a scene where she lights a hat(a kufi)on fire, AND a scene where she tears someone's wig off.
    - Here's how lazy the screenwriting is, when the parents arrange for Ezra/Amira to reunite by tricking them, Julia Louis Dreyfus tricks Hill by going shoe shopping, and Eddie tells his daughter, "I don't even remember the reason I made up."
    - The wedding at the end. Here's the worst part, it's a surprise wedding arranged by the parents - after Ezra/Amira broke up and hadn't seen each other in months. If my parents threw me a surprise wedding, I'd kill them.
    - I laughed twice - someone said Jonah Hill looked like a young Hulk Hogan, and the idea of a Tron wedding.

There's a French comedy about a Catholic white couple who have multiple daughters and they all married a man of a different culture. Then their youngest daughter got engaged to an African man and they're like "another one, couldn't he be white!".
So in this movie, the black and white parents aren't predictably mean to the fiancees. They're just mean to each other. Not because of racism in Europe, but because they're both stubborn jerks who want their culture to win for that wedding.
They're besties in the end, tho.
My point is that you can make that type of movie in 2023. But it needs to be subverted now. It can't just be "white = dumb" and "black = woke".

    • @FrankieTakesOver
      @FrankieTakesOver Рік тому

@Dajiyah Mcae I've also had my own experiences in the same regard, but in my eyes interracial couples aren't as much of an issue to the mainstream of America as it was 50 yrs ago. Today, everyone's with everyone on every magazine, tv show, movie, commercial, etc. Obviously if we're talking about racism we can talk about systemic racism, police brutality, what people say on the internet, etc, but I don't think most have a fit when they see interracial celebrity couples on tv or interracial couples in the supermarket. Do these people/parents exist? Sure, but they are such a small percentage of people(who will die off soon), and it feels like making another movie for the 100th time around this is more regressive than progressive.
My biggest problem is mainly this being made by Kenya Barris, who I see as a lesser evil version of Tyler Perry. Both, especially Tyler Perry, make their millions/careers off of black stereotypes and old outdated tropes. Also when it comes to the black and white topic, they always paint black people as mean or confrontational and white people as dumb, but they mean well🙄. To me these movies only do more harm than good by keeping old stereotypes relevant and seem more devisive than funny. I doubt oldheads would watch anything Kenya Barris and if they do, their minds aren't gonna change by watching these exaggerated stereotypes on display, just for the last 10 minutes to be where everyone smiles, holds hands and sings kumbaya.

I’m definitely more in Martin’s camp where I didn’t hate it to the degree as Korey and Chris, but it wasn’t very good. As you guys said, it’s basically like Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner mixed with Meet the Parents, but nowhere near as good as both of those. Aside from Mike Epps and the sister, the characters are either unlikable or stupid, the social commentary seems to butt heads with the romantic comedy aspect, and minus a few moments it just wasn’t funny. I know you said it felt like the worst parts of Meet the Parents, but I got more laughs out of that movie and that felt more relatable.
Another case of a comedy where you got a great cast like Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill (who I know co-wrote the movie), and Julia Louie-Dreyfuss, who’ve all shown to be very funny in other projects, but their talents are wasted on a thin material. Honestly this is the type of movie where I was expecting Keenan Ivory Wayans from Don’t Be a Menace to come out of nowhere to say, *MESSAGE!*

And I hate when you can tell a black character or characters were written by a white person that has never met a black person in real life, but the part in the barbershop with the crips felt that way and I'm almost certain those characters were written by a black person so that's even worse and we're still talking about black people and boats or the ocean that trope is washed, come up with something new.

I come from a mixed race family, and I married an Australian with gay parents. None of this resonated with me. It’s nothing new and lots of films have done it better. There were some funny jokes but my overall impression was that it was stupidly and unnecessarily blunt, predictable and reinforcing some really tired stereotypes and missed an opportunity to be infinitely more creative in how they brought something new to this very old story. The road to ruin was paved with good intentions and this was an embarrassingly cliched, lazy attempt, and so removed from any sensible reality for the pursuit of the easy joke, it became a parody of itself. How can you make a bad movie with Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis Dreyfus? Yes we know characters like this exist, we’ve all met them, but it’s the same joke the whole movie, and it gets just as tired as dealing with it in real life.

Eddie Murphy's character reminds me of my friend's dad. He converted their family from Islam to a church that was basically Islam+Jesus)
He saw me with a white guy and wouldn't even speak to me.. And someone who is like that isn't going to suddenly change because of a speech and a conversation with their brother. Also, it's just not funny to see someone be that hateful.
Bottom line: Kenya Barris is a terrible "creator" and it irks me that he's the one they give these platforms to.

I agree with everything here and I probably would've hated if not for that gummy. But that gummy, tho. I loved Martin's comparison with 'meet the parents' and literally everything else he said- totally right about the formula. The story does seem forced - the last act is thrown in as an afterthought, like they took the storyboard section summary and just had them act those words out literally. The gummy of course had me thinking "oh they're going to take it like" rather than the clear intention from Ezra (eating his foot) and his mother (doesn't even realize the foot should be there). I didn't mind Eddie's character - the role of his wife seemed weird. I expected her to be the natural voice of reason, at times maybe upset because enough was enough - but knowing and telling Eddie at the very least he is 'also wrong'. Also I had no idea if David Duchovny was supposed to seem ignorant -he seemed to be ignorant to his wife's words but mostly he seemed just like an old dude trying to be cool, which I had exposure to because that was my father. I feel like this was Tyler Perry level work? But for people who like kinda dumbed down comedies - like if a joke needed explanation for 1/5 the audience they add the subtext for that joke.
This did seem like a slightly different, but much more forced version of "The Proposal." The problem being, that I felt like here the family made it hard to follow the main couple. And I did resent Fatima, because Ezra was apologizing for his parents lack of awareness constantly.
The throttle of cringy, but well meaning white folks - which have way too much access to internet slang and hardly any actual real life exposure. And then the problem of culture, where the things we are passionate about may not coincide with how people see us.
I loved the movie. I think Julia D's character was a bit too on the nose, I mean there were at least two points in the movie where I was like "oh she's not doing this on accident, she's actually really racist" but..I also feel like most of the conversation would have played out like that. It was almost a vehicle for someone like me, who probably isn't that bad but may be perceived like "did he really just say that, that was on purpose".
I also think we might not say it out loud, the idea that "finally it's not just white people" would not escape us behind closed doors.
For Eddie on the other hand, I mean the Islam thing is huge, the idea of not being black but being a part of hip hop culture influencers. So while he seemed like the bad guy to me - an atheist - the religion thing especially is a hard thing to get past. "Why do you want to marry my daughter, and you don't even believe in Islam - hell you're Jewish, and you probably don't believe in any Abrahamic religion - do you?"
I really enjoyed it. I'll never watch it again, As the whitest person someone could possibly be, but still say that RA the Rugged Man is his go to personal GOAT in Hip Hop. Also, UNCOMMON VALOR. The best.
I felt at the time it was like a 7/10. Now I think it was probably a 3/10 that I enjoyed because of environment, that actually had a lot of potential. Because the dynamics between friendship with people with far different cultures is interesting and I love it as much as I fear it sometimes. It would've been a way better movie if that was explored at a different pace, and at a higher level.

Yeah this film looks like something I would not want to watch at the moment. The commentary seems too heavy-handed, the characters don't seem likable or aren't portrayed well, and the comedy seems hit or miss.
It's funny Korey compares this to Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, which they already remade as Guess Who with Ashton Kutcher, Bernie Mac, and Zoe Saldana and even that couldn't live up to what that film was.
Sidenotes: Chris almost does look like Jonah Hill here lol, and I agree with Chris that a lot of modern media seems to rely on empower color people by making white people look dumb (it's similar to the trope of empowering women by having the men look dumb or incompetent). I feel that way about "Black media" sometimes where they often portray the white characters stereotypically ignorant, unaware, or not getting it. As opposed to showing the ones who do get it or at least are empathetic. You don't need to empower one group by tearing down the other.

It’s not about being “D*mb” it’s about being tone-deaf and because it’s a COMEDY, it’s exaggerated. Unfortunately as a black man I’ve experienced a lot of the tone-deaf racism that was on this movie and some of it wasn’t far removed from what happens in the movie. Especially in the workplace

The movie wasn't a 10/10, but as a white dude who's married to a black woman, I think it captured the experience well. The core message (at least to me) was pretty realistic, at first my parents weren't sure how to treat my wife, and my wife's family was apprehensive about me. It's about not judging a book by its cover.
Was the movie preachy? Yes, but you have to keep in mind that Akbar (Eddy Murphy) is a member of the Nation of Islam, and is "friends" with Louis Farrakhan, a literal black-supremacist, anti-white, antisemitic preacher (seriously look this guy up)... Him and his wife are going to be preachy, the point of the characters aren't to push an agenda, its to satirize and show how black people can also be ignorant and racist.
The Jewish parents weren't stupid, during the dinner scene their reaction is appropriate to finding out they're having dinner with someone who's prize possession was a hat, given to them by a well known and vocal antisemite. When it comes to how they treated Amira (Lauren London), they weren't stupid, they were well intentioned, Shelly (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Arnold (David Duchovny) both attempted to "relate" to their daughter in law, but in trying to relate to her, they ended up alienating her and making an ass out of themselves. This kind of shit happens, the first time my mom met my wife, she asked if her hair was real.
As people who can relate to the struggle of the main characters, the movie was fucking hilarious for my wife and I.

I hated this movie. I saw your video of the review on a thumbnail in my feed and decided to check it out. I could not get through the movie. I came back to see what you guys thought. Me personally, I hated it. It was uncomfortable, cringy and offensive due to the heavy social engineering. Everything the mass media want us to think was in this movie. It has the same feel as velma. Social engineering is getting out of hand in movies. Before they would sprinkle it here and there, now they are just putting it in our face and force feeding us this crap. The whole black woman and white man agenda is annoying. Why don't they let things happen organically rather than force interracial marriages on us. I don't care about it, but they way they do it is condescending.
