കേരളത്തിൽ സാഹിത്യത്തോളം ജനങ്ങൾ ചിത്ര കലയെ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല.ചിത്രകാരന്മാരൊക്കെ വെറും കഥയ്ക്ക് അല്ലെങ്കിൽ കവിതക്ക് ചിത്രം വരക്കുന്നവരായാണ് കാണുന്നത്.രവിവര്മയെ പോലെ ഗ്രേറ്റ് ആയിട്ടുള്ള അനേകം ചിത്രകാരന്മാരുണ്ട് കേരളത്തിൽ.അവർക്കൊക്കെ കേരളത്തിന്റെ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ പുറത്തു വളരെ സ്വീകാര്യത കിട്ടുമ്പോൾ കേരളം അകറ്റി നിര്ത്തുന്നു അഥവാ അകന്നു നിക്കുന്നു
Very interesting talk, but alas, fatally flawed! Ilayidam collects a decent set of ideas and piggybacks on a decent set of (largely Western--nothing wrong, but who else?) thinkers and poets, but does not feel any need to be 'critical' of these sources and his own choices. What would that involve? He doesn't seem to think there is any use doing this, or hasn't felt the need to do so. Whyever not? This is a good example of Benjamin's fabled civilization/barbarity paradox, at best! A few short pointers follow. Setting out to think the 'Other' doesn't win you automatic immunity from any 'othering' of your own. Who would be Ilayidam's own 'Other/s'--itharar? Or is he the 'Other' incarnate that somehow escapes idealist subject positions? How would one [read: he] speak to those subjects/objects? Who would he himself be 'othering', and would the poetry that he has read save him from doing this, in some way? Is this what and how he would talk to them? Not like this, surely? It is possible to find a few candidates for being his others, but the more interesting thing would be for him to find some himself. With a six-figure salary and paid vacations, surely he can find the time and resources to do this? No evidence that this has struck him as something worth the trouble. Think how much wiser and insightful he would sound on a topic like this if he had! Whether poetry/art reflects (or should reflect, as suggested here) the experience of the 'other' or not is a very debatable point. It might sound like a good thing to say and think, but such a commoditization of the experience that 'belongs' to the 'other' cannot necessarily grant freedom to anyone at all. This is a freedom that is interesting to imagine, but not to imagine as already real--and not just and merely 'ideal'. This kind of essentialist romanticization of poetry/art is surely cause for wariness? History is full of artists/poets contra empire, but in roughly the past century, less of them have survived in the lands whose poets/writers Ilayidam speaks with great passion here about. Why might that have been so? Unless we think this, we cannot really lay claim to have spoken about, or even spoken up for, poetry. This is no defense of poetry as Ilayidam would want us to believe it is. So I would be cautious when someone speaks like this about 'poetry/art.' Those who hear this can snuggle back into their own imagined 'otherness' and imagine, with certification from Ilayidam, that everybody else must be ideologically compromised. Poetry, as Auden once complained, makes nothing happen, and I'm afraid Ilayidam has helped it remain so in our minds. His Malayalam itself is an imperial one, abounding in the latest polysyllabic intellectual fashions grafted onto a seemingly willing (again, why?) Malayalam. Is this what a Malayalam poet would want to hear and rejoice in? There is nothing a language mustn't do, no doubt, and Ilayidam has his own inalienable rights to language, but a language such as this, that claims so much certainty and authority is not my sense of a language thinking and thinking through itself. I would have been happier with a more tentative and less cocky language/thought. Finally, perhaps, it is precisely this (I almost wrote 'false'!) certainty, this 'flow' and this self-affirmation that a speech like this is peddling. Not buying! Ilayidam is an example of how impoverished Kerala has become, in terms of public intellectuals. There are fine speakers, but with niche audiences. This kind of polarization is similar to the polarized state of newspapers in Kerala. A Malayali needs to read 5 newspapers if she is to gain any purchase on what's up and about in the world, and if you don't or can't hang around barber shops, this variety isn't even available. The more viewpoints, the better, no doubt, but the newspapers represent the divided slices of community in Kerala. Cassata slices no longer sell, and individual flavours have diversified. It's a shame Ilayidam services a portion, however precious and small and brave and totally vulnerable it might appear to him to be. Speaking to the converted isn't intellectually legit where I'd like to have been from. I write this in sorrow rather than any sense of (self)righteouness, and I'd have liked to say this to him directly, but these are general observations that are addressed as much to him as to myself and others who care--or think they care. I write this in guilt at having enjoyed this speech more than I really think I did.
