LOL I have lived on the Matanuska river my whole life. I have never seen someone dip a cup in it before. We do have beavers up here just so you know. There is a beaver pond like 2 miles up stream on the Mat and like 300 beaver ponds on Kings river that was 10 feet up stream from your cup not counting the dead salmon. I will drink from small streams never the large ones without filtering. You just played the Alaskan giardia lottery>>you won> >>and the prize is >> not exploding out both ends at the same time in the bathroom for 2 weeks strait. On a hunting trip on Kodiak I watched a guy with my binoculars he was camped about a mile from me. That guy had drank beaver fever water day one of a 2 week trip. Every morning he would crawl to the beach and explode for 30 mins and crawl on all fours back to his tent. I actually checked on him with the binos and every morning for 2 weeks. I fully expected one morning he might not crawl out of his tent. Lets just say i filter my water now :0 5mins can save 2weeks of poohell or death. To be fair he was drinking strait from a beaver pond and I was drinking from a spring.
That’s hilarious. I’ve drank unfiltered water from every river I’ve camped at in Alaska. Last year I spent 8 days on a moose hunt drinking unfiltered water from Willow creek. Was ice cold and tasted so amazing. After the week was up, I met a guy that told me he had gotten giardia from brushing his teeth in the river, not even drinking from it. The beavers were still up river when I was there, too. Maybe I’m immune, or just lucky, who knows.
KLRs are famous for dirty cars and choke issues. They are easy to work on though. I'm not a mechanic by any means, and I was able to take the carb off and replace the jets with the Eagle Mike kit without any problems. I got the same choke replacement for my KLR you put on, did you use the original "spring end" that was on the OEM cable? If you use the one that came with the new brass piece and not replace it with the OEM piece it can cause issues like your having. The little plunger doesn't stay where it needs to be, because the new spring is "too tight". There is also a little tube that hangs down at the bottom of the bike with a plug on it. That tube is a "drain" for the airbox. If there's any liquid in it, unplug it to get it out and plug up again. Luckily it seems your filter was the problem this time. Did you put filter oil on it before you it back on? You may continue to have problems if you didn't. As far as handwarmers.... ThermaSilk glove liners are awesome, really keep your hands warm and are relatively thin so you can wear them under your regular gloves without issue.......
@MotherPanAmerica your issue could bee a electrical short under the tank in main harness or under the seat, I've had a issue with 18 under the tank from wires chafing and grounding out.watxhed a guys klr go up in flames from a short under the seat.just something to ponder.
I don’t think so. He’s just getting an extended lesson in the glory of carburetors. Should have opted for a newer fuel injected KLR650 in my opinion, but here we are. On the bright side, I imagine every other Alaskan is an amateur small engine mechanic used to working on non-fuel injected stuff.

Good call. Was debating using engine oil because I didn’t have any filter oil, but decided against it. Picked up some filter oil first chance I had.

wet spark splug cap can do what your bike dose some wd 40 can help in those cases

Hate to say it, but even in glacial water there can be giardia. Boil or filter.

Nah. Just ensure proper maintenance and having extra parts will do the trick. A dirty air / non oiled air filter etc isn't the KLR's fault :)
