MK games never really got super high numbers are Evo regardless. MK11 had already fallen to 600 participants 3 years into its life. Japanese fighting games are just way bigger in the competitive space
@@ADreamingTravelermk11 wasnt well received game either, evo 2015 mkx had 1100 participants, it was still lower than sf and smash but beat tekken 7 by over 600 entries

First EVO appearance and MK gets washed by 2 anime games, dinosaur ass 3rd Strike and looking absolutely next to Tekken 8 in it's first EVO appearance. I don't think there is any saving that game. Not with MVC Collection right around the corner to reclaim it's throne as THE tag assist game.
At CEO which is the tournament I went to for Smash Ultimate, it was being beaten out by Mario Kart and Brawlhalla. It's honestly kind of crazy how far MK1 has fallen
@@Ultima64 There is a lot of different factors that's put MK where it is today but I'll say trying to sell on a violence alone has caught up to MK by neglecting to lock down a gameplay identity instead of gimmick of the week. Like who is this even for when you arbitrarily change stuff like the input for Scorpion spear every game. It's not unique. It's not making the game better and only serves to piss people off especially the casual Joe who grew up back in the day and just wants to mash around on a new MK.
Mortal Kombat was always a gonna be a novelty product. Even at his best moment, when 2 hit arcades, it never had more players than other more established FG IPs. By the time 4 came out they were gasping at straws. If it wasn't for the revival that 9 caused MK would've been a relic of the past only milenials cared about.
How to save MK1 to do list: - Add a proper buffer for the strings (like all well designed fighting games do) - Stop fully changing the fighters movelist every game. - Give the characters a deeper and more consistent personality, visible during play, not only in cutscenes, and not just gimmics. - Make real quality assurance before patching. - Invest more in the community and the competitive scene, not only in monetization campaigns.
Honestly, THIS. I started with NRS games and it felt fine. I played SF6 and Tekken 8 and when I go back to MK1 the inputs for buttons and specials feels...off, like I have to manually time everything in a combo (except for the dial-in strings). Also, the constant changing of inputs for moves is really annoying. Like, a character from one game to the next can have completely different move lists apart from a few special moves. I want to have some consistent buttons and inputs please😭
Real. The way that characters are completely changed every single game is actually so frustrating. When I was mainly an nrs player I thought it was fine but switching over to mainly anime games has made me realize how shity it is.
@@ghhdgjjfjjggj Might be talking about the "dial-a-combos" where you have to put in the entire strings in quick successions or they just won't come out
Don't understand why they keep changing the move sets. I took my niece and nephew to CEO and when they saw Mileena in top 8 they were expecting some command throws. Unfortunately she doesn't have one any more. Part of what I love about Tekken is that all the moves I learned way back in Tekken 2 still work. Sure, Paul has new stuff, my old combos STILL work. it helps when picking up sequels that I don't have to completely relearn the character to have some fun.
it is lmao, Mortal Kombat has been banned in Japan since 1997 due to its violent content. While it is not officially sold in Japan, fans can import the game from other regions or use VPNs to access it...
@@DieHard1912 not true. MK is not officially banned it just can't be sold there due to the Japanese rating system. They did introduce their own AO rating equivalent later on and MK can be sold there under that rating (only the PC version though) but WB Games just don't want to bother due to the franchise's lack of popularity there.
Mortal Kombat being banned due to its violent content would be ironic as hell, seeing as how a game like Resident Evil known for its horror, graphic and violent content came out of Japan.
Sadly for KOF, most Americans already quit and moved on from it, most of its players are from Asia and latin America and most of them cant afford to travel to Evo. Even Evo Japan had a higher KoF number due to its regional advantage. This will likely be KOF's last year at Evo and City of the Wolves will replace it next year. MK1's numbers are pretty embarassing though for a new game.
Kof is not a very good series to begin with...it is not well balanced and a handful characters are better than the rest of the cast...facts are facts...it is like the roster seems so huge but when it comes down to who you will be picking...you have a problem...as it will always be the same three characters...
@@remarkableputter6622 balance is not the factor that decides a game success on competitive. Just look at 3rd strike, its filles of Chun-li and Yun, we can even argue that is even more broken than MK1 but still has a lot of attendants. Facts are facts

@@remarkableputter6622 What is "well balanced"? Because whenever i check each different communities there are debates about balance issues in their games. Especially in the first 2 years. But a longer life with constant updates wont 100% guarantee the best balance either. Like, if you are willing to skim over the early history of every game (or just look up since the ps4 gen to be bearable research) you will find those balance issues, sometimes horrible issues even. There was bad balance in the early 1990s and there is bad balance in the 2020s in the launch version of ALL games. So the problems of KOF are not related to balance at all because it's a shared problem.
@@RealMikeHollow Strive is very solidly the 3rd most populated fighting game. It's much bigger than Xrd was, for sure, and it's by far the biggest anime game.
@@alanreeves9872 The thing is that it's a very recent breakthrough for GG, that until then was an extremely small franchise. So even though you are correct on that info (and you could have mentioned a huge achievement that is GG getting 4 dlc seasons, which only ever happened to SF and TK in this whole world of fgs), that recent great performance doesnt seem to be enough to convince the community collectively to start treating GG that way... since SF and TK are huge since the 90s. Actually that's a reasonable attitude.
But MK was always bad as a competitive fg. It's just that the game started being taken too seriously, probably because of the american bias from the Evo founders and organizers. It's a "lower class" fg in terms of gameplay substance, that deserves to be seen in a tier below all serious competitive fgs. But that will never happen because the american side of the fgc has a big influence on the whole fg culture and even people who are not big fans of MK will not disrespect it, because it's their country's fg after all and it's a really successful product in sales.

It was never a serious fighting game. It was mindless fun for a few rounds with your friends. It was in the same space as bloody roar and killer instinct.
Idk why mk players have NO standards or self-respect. If I were a competitor, I would be making WAY more of a fuss about this garbage. Not even a game, just garbage.
Those defense tweets just tell me the NRS competitive community both have low standards for offline attendance and growth while having crazy high standards for what they need to make an offline tourney worth their while ($$$). I dont even think the idea of Kameos is bad...i think it's just implemented poorly because NRS added them without considering other necessary mechanics that tend to come with assists in other games. It is such a promising game that was released too early and the dev team is either poorly equipped to assess what needs changing, or they are just prioritizing the wrong things. At this point, i think NRS should stop focusing so much on competitive tourney play and balance since they are so bad at it, and just go all in on putting focus into making fun casual content. Mkone might be their worst game for casual content in over two decades since maybe Deadly Alliance or the arcade days of MK4, and thats a bad tradeoff when this game's competitive 1v1 side is no good either. Why focus on hardcore competitors when it isnt resulting in more views on social media or more attendance in tourneys? The ROI is super low for promoting competitive MK. Just make the game fun and give people reasons to play.
I think the game feels like a injustice game slow af. Also no krypt is a no go for me that was my favorite mode. Also kameos are lame what if they just let you run and do cool combos like mkx instead of some Garbo kameo system
Datdude, MK11/injust progression, and Crypt - is a biggest Cancer in a videogame history. Litterally, even the worse gacha-game like genshin or MMO games - is less cancer than MK))
@@fdnfdnasd7714 explain that to me? I put zero money into the game was able to explore a completely different world. @@datdude15 the reason why crypt is bad, because it a game mode which is not optional. I explain. When i want play in fighting game, i want play in 1 vs 1 duel, not in "walking simulator with gacha lootboxes" with gameplay quality equal unity game created by student. Most fighting games have some optional game modes, like tekken bowl, or tekken ball, but you no need to play it, if you don't like it. But in MK, devs closed game content behind crypt, and if you want unlock fatalities, poses, brutality etc, you Must play in crypt and spent your time, which you can spent just playing in regular fights. And if you only want to play 1vs1, and have a uncutted game (with all fat/brut), devs push you to pay. Or spent many hours in very cheap game mode with silly gacha-gameplay.
I was born in 94. I AM the target demographic for MK, and I don't say that without support; my mom didn't care about the violence and got me those games when I was 5. I dressed up as Scorpion for Halloween. In fact, the very words "I WANNA BE SCORPION FOR HALLOWEEN" are engraved in my memory from childhood. I bought EVERY MK game short of mythologies, from MK 1-3 to MK4 on Nintendo 64 to MK 5-7 on PS2 and every that crappy MK vs DC which technically counted as 8 right up to MK9, my beloved. I was a lifelong fan. MKX was the first time I felt that the series was veering off course, at least tonally and design wise. Then MK11 happened... Jesus, f--- MK11. That was the game that made me, as a lifelong fan, discard the franchise. I had since become a Street Fighter man and also just generally had a love for Fighting Games as a genre; not a pro player or anything but I appreciate the mechanics, art, characters and worlds they create. My loyalty to MK wasn't necessary. But it still HURT knowing the franchise I grew up with was effectivelt something else entirely. ... Then MK1 happened. The depression phase is over, I'm in my revenge phase. This franchise and its current devs deserve every L they get hit with and I am not sorry for any of them. They earned this.
@ChrisX_212 Sure thing. I will give a more condensed version (very funny coming from me as you will soon see) because I am at work right now so I apologize for lack of more in depth details because trust me I have more to say on a lot of this. With MKX it wasn't really any problems with the gameplay. More just the graphics, lighting, some of the character designs and models. I could tell it was retreading MK4's story but tonally it just felt off. Having the story focus hard on the Cage family felt kinda weird and awkward; highlighted their weaknesses as writers. A lot of the fatalities and gore had some awkward presentation such as Kung Lao's fatalities or the X-Ray moves generally not having any bone breaks occurring within the arms or legs. Stuff like that. MKX, I would argue, was still a great game, they just missed the mark on presentation. MK11 was where those little nags about MKX's story came to fruition and a lot of the storytelling just had bad pacing, focus and direction. New characters were introduced that were pretty unlikable, there it continued the trend of killing off characters just to try and create shock value, then immediately invalidated that by having the whole universe reset, many story beats just weren't landing, etc. The currencies were a big problem and the grind for things like Hearts at the beginning of the game utterly crippled my interest in continuing to play and having AI farm them for me just disengaged me from the gameplay itself. The meta was obnoxiously projectile focused, a growing issue with the games and something I first began noticing with Injustice 1 so I wasn't really having fun online either. The DLC was cool but short sighted, contributing to that projectile issue. Changes to characters like my man Scorpion weren't appreciated and I was beginning to become frustrated with how the games never had consistent movesets between games unlike the PS2 and original trilogies. Fan favorite characters were missing. Redesigns such as Sheeva or the classic ninja girls obviously had DEI influence (this was a thing even back then, it was just more covert) and I had a pretty bad taste in my mouth after the dev's response to fans was to call us perverted creeps for thinking the designs weren't outdated AKA the whole "bikini" thing was predicated on this stupid idea that the women were being sexualized when in reality everyone from old Outworld and Edenia generally wore little clothing and exposed a lot of skin, men included (Goro, Reiko, Shao Kahn, etc) so anyone who just liked those costumes due to familiarity or because of immersive reasons just got insulted for no good reason. The Krypt was a good concept on paper ruined by grinding and needless scavenger hunts. Still no minigames, proper Conquest Mode, or Character Creator even though this game was evoking the PS2 era games. The game was following the trend of "free super moves" which turned the latter half of every round into a slow paced "will they/won't they" scenario which affected tournament play as well. The Gear System which they carried over from Injustice 2 was very unwelcome in my opinion and I didn't like the act of having to pick and choose between my favorite iconic moves.. just.. I disliked a LOT of things about MK11. I even had a problem with the Fatalities just because where games before MKX were a healthy mixed of "Funny", "Stylish" and "Grossout" Fatalities the ones in MK11 were by and large mostly in the Grossout category. They simply were pushing it for the sake of pushing it. I wanted less Fatalities like the Geras "Wall Rip" and mote Fatalities like Scorpion's "Chain Bisection". And most of those criticisms carried straight over into MK1. In fact, the most insulting part about MK1 is the fact that it was Netherrealm's chance to MAKE AMENDS with the fans they turned off with MK11. But while the story started out okay, it quickly dissolved into a complete mess with many retcons and rewrites that I fundamentally disagree with. Just one example, but Mileena's whole character even existing made no sense anymore, then "Tarkat" being a disease now which she is inflicted with and can pretty much randomly control at will by the end of the story making prior self control arcs pointless and her whole princess subplot ultimately amounting to nothing, I thought they did Mileena INCREDIBLY dirty in their attempts to rewrite her. Of course, there is Shao Kahn too; once a genuine menace and actual evil mastermind with the added factor of being hideously strong now reduced to someone who can get canned by any regular cast member and no longer even retains the name of Shao Kahn. I could level similar criticisms about a lot of characters from the last two games in fact, Kotal Kahn ironically being another character done CONSISTENTLY dirty. Meanwhile, the story had the gall to evoke Armageddon directly but still didn't have ANY of the elements from MK Armageddon that people loved, SUCH AS CONQUEST AND CHARACTER CREATOR (I am not going to count Invasion Mode. Let's be real, everyone hates it). And what really drove this particular nail in the coffin for me was the fact that Street Fighter 6... F---ing STREET FIGHTER did a better job at capturing those modes than Mortal Kombat did. I have a lot more to say, but it's honestly hard to REMEMBER it all. I'm definitely not saying games like the PS2 era titles were perfect, but what I am saying is that these newer games miss the heart and soul of what made people from the 90's and 2000's fall in love with this franchise; the atmosphere, the music, the world, the character designs... ALL OF IT is gone at this point. When you actually stop and LOOK at MK1... I mean, imagine showing this game to someone from those eras. It doesn't even look like the same game. Would they recognize it? Personally, I don't think they would. The reason I have hated these last two games so much is because they don't feel at all like Mortal Kombat games tonally or otherwise. They feel like a Mortal Kombat spinoff franchise or fan fic. If you really want to understand what I am talking about, I recommend playing Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks and just absorbing the world of that game, because it is everything these games are missing. It isn't a fighting game, but it encapsulates everything I wish they would bring back.

MK competitive scene has never been big idk why people think this is new. Scene is not big because who wants to compete seriously when they make a new game every two years and completely overhaul the gameplay. Imagine tryna be an NFL player and after your second season you have to play rugby. But I do have to say most who have never played the game criticizing it have no idea what they are talking about and largely focus on the wrong things.
Your last sentence is why I wanna get the game before I just start criticizing it, I’m sure peoples complaints are understandable but I can’t say the game is bad or anything before I actually play
You made a really good point, the game feel rushed and incomplete, WB after every New game looks more greedy, there is lack of content, and not a a biggest fan of the kameo System, but even with many problems, the game still fun and in general the gameplay is really good!
The franchise has small numbers in tournament, that is a fact. But a brand new MK, that is a highly successful franchise, needed to have better numbers. There's no way to dodge that matter, that is actually the real problem. Even small games tends to get some decent attention at their first Evo. What is "decent"? It depends on the game. Like, GGST's first Evo got to surpass SF5 in numbers, but that is very rare. So a franchise like MK, even though it's ever going to get close to SF, still is normally supposed to get much better numbers than those in the first year. Based on the "first Evo" history of previous MK games.
……because Japanese fighting games are way better than western fighting games. MK has amazing theatrics, but gameplay is its weak point. Characters intros, arcade endings, the single modes are great for casuals. That’s who plays it the most.
Yeah. I enjoyed playing through the campaign (except for the last bit where they butcher the whole idea of starting over), i had some fun in ranked for a while, but most other fighting games just demolish it. If i want to play MK, i just download MKX, because there is no reason not to play that instead.
Sad thing is that MK has simply walked backwards. MK9 and MKX felt so feature-rich, fun to play and were super active and well-liked by the FGC. There's a reason that serious players prefer to opt into those two games instead of 11 and 1. They just plain suck to play and have jack all to do.

People really need to give Strive more credit for maintaining a sizeable competitive scene. I'm an old Gear head, and I have my issues with Strive for sure, but if you told me in 2018 that any Guilty Gear would have over 2K EVO entrants year after I would call you crazy. Some of it was luck and having rollback at the right place and time, but that success should be acknowledged. Even if I don't enjoy the game as it is now, I have faith it can improve and continue to be an anchor in the FGC.
No, strive deserves absolutely no credit for anything because it is a downgrade in every single way from the previous entry and EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW THAT. Strive is the result of a passion project selling out to mainstream and losing everything that made it good in the process.
Mike I don’t know if you will read this. Why won’t the commentators, pro players, and large content creators say that this game is bad? Why will they go and come up with every other excuse (not sold in Asia, very casual, players sign up later, it’s the community’s fault, and everything in between)? Who are they afraid of? NRS AND WB DON’T GIVE AF ABOUT THEM! Why do people believe this game is good. It sucks. Plain and simply and it’s the reason people aren’t going.
It's either because they want to stay in NRS good graces or they're very young and feel the need to protect it. I remember in school when we had the PS3 Vs Xbox 360 wars and we would proper defend PS3 against Xbox like they paid us 😂 I can only assume the people doing this are very young or wanting to be buddy buddy with NRS cos they're just lying and making excuses.
@@RealMikeHollow that’s tragic because if they are content creators trying to grow their channels you would think that they would want their game to be better and not painful to watch or play so their channels can continue to grow no? I do see what you are saying however with the buddy system with NRS.
@@RealMikeHollow or maybe some people actually enjoy playing it ? I mean, so many mid games gain a decent following even years after they release, like fallout 76 for example is still played by a good amount of players despite it's horrible launch, so it's really not that surprising that a game like MK1 has a dedicated playerbase despite it's flaws. I mean, that's kinda why the category "it's so bad it's good" exists. Some people just don't care about the overall quality or reputation of a game and simply cares about having a good time, doesn't have anything to do with age or staying in NRS good graces. That's my opinion tho, feel free to ignore, I'm just a random who got recommended this video for some reason 🤷♂️
Men lie. Women lie. The numbers never lie. We all know NRS is clueless, but these so-called fans are even worse. You have to compare MK1 to current competitors, and it's being smoked right now. The fact that you have to compare it to the numbers of the past MK or Injustice games even shows how MK1 is currently taking an L. Last point, just go look at the history books. There are plenty of bad games that sold well. Just because it sold well doesn't make the game good. Anthem sold 5 million copies; enough said.
I enjoy when people throw rhetorical molotov cocktails like "if you disagree with me you're foolish and ignorant" as a way to discourage any kind of conversation on a topic. Twitter is so shit it's unbelievable. That aside, Strive doing well is pretty dope.
Why this game fails. 1. Barely any modes. 2. Base game sucks, trying to be something its not. 3. Unbalanced roster( Same shells and Kameos) 4. Broken patches. 5. Hype died down, propped up by fanboys. 6. The game is slow, it wants to be a guest game, assist spammer. 7. Better fighters are out and or coming.
@mauricioaguilera3194 maybe its not the same as the other guilty gears, and i do prefer xrd but i think strive is a great game still, what makes u think its bad?
What gets me about the MK community is that it’ll act shameless and peacock about like it belongs but then when people rightfully question or mock the state of MK nowadays compared to either its glory in the 90’s or the MK9/X resuregnce, it’s siege mentality and acting like MK is being unfairly picked on. It’s like music stans crowing about stream numbers but then go into meltdowns whenever said Stream mongers get shat on.
Just the whole approach to mk’s artistic presentation goes contrary to the popular tastes of Japan. People there are playing Mario odyssey and gacha games, they don’t care to see homelander get gored by Johnny cage.
I think they went too far with the realism in fatalities. The old games were violent, but kind of silly, so the games could pass easier through regulations.
I have quite literally never been apart of a community that will do everything in its power to come up with every other excuse as to why this game is failing the way that it is. Mr Aquaman (really bad commentator for this game) said that it’s the community’s fault that people are “all talk no show” as to why this game has bad numbers. We have absolute morons as figureheads who refuse to believe that the reasons the numbers are like this is because the game is bad.
You have to realise the fgc is full of lazy hacks, in and out of the game , it’s a broke boy industry so they will shill and tier whore like no tomorrow
I'm not really firmly in the fighting community but I think a lot of people just buy MK because the spectacle looks cool. Buy it press some buttons, cool stuff happens, and then it goes on the shelf once you've seen it. SF makes me want to learn a character so I think, from my naive perspective, it just seems like the other fighting games do a better job of converting tourists into stakeholders.
I think the low numbers in KOF are there because the game its super popular here in latin america and asia, so travelling to watch an evo its pretty hard
NRS doesn’t care about EVO… so as long as people still buy the content it doesn’t matter. Their profit out weighs the need to care for pro competition or longevity numbers of the game
Yeah, tournaments and longevity are attributes specifically valued by the fgc only, that is the small group of gamers with hardcore competition interests. So WB, which is a different company than all other fighting game makers, wants to keep MK working that way. The franchise actually has a much higher commercial success, since it usually outsells most (if not all) jp fgs despite the bans and all. That must be why WB doesnt care about short lived releases.
Your last statement is what I predict. I think MK1 is the MVCi of the series. After EVO I can see people dropping that game at it's majors and I definitely see it being left out of EVO next year for sure. I want to put this out there as well. Before COVID the original line up for EVO 2020 was: Under Night In Birth, Samurai Showdown, Dragonball Fighterz, Streetfighter 5, Tekken 7, Granblue Fantasy Versus, Soul Calibur 6, and they were gonna do a Tournament Of Champions which ended up being Marvel 2 I think. MK11 only returned because of COVID and it's access to Rollback Netcode so EVO Online needed functional games and MK11 was utilised for this. In today's time all those other games such as StreetFighter 6 and Tekken 8 have rollback so what do you wanna bet MK doesn't make it next year at EVO. Those other fighting games have caught up so it doesn't have anything special holding it up now so we will see what happens. Great video Mike Hollow.
Just so it's clear. Originally MK11 was gonna be dropped after it's 1st year at EVO but people forgot about it because of COVID. I think after this EVO they'll drop MK. They would have to overhaul the game so dramatically to make it but I actually think it's done until the new NRS game.
honestly i feel like MK just doesnt have that competitive audience, i dont know anyone who actually buys MK to play a fighting game, its just for the story mode and then the tower if u enjoyed the game. whereas if ur buying tekken or street fighter, throwing yourself into ranked is one of the first things u do, shit most people i know picking up tekken played ranked without even touching the story, sf6 world tour is cool as hell but the main point of the game is still fighting other players.
Maybe a bit off topic but as someone who really enjoyed the original Granblue its such a shame it got so unlucky with the pandemic never really getting a proper chance thus it makes me happy to see the numbers of entrants Granblue fantasy Rising is getting i love this game and its my personal favorite fighting game out right now so here is hoping the community keeps growing !
About the point of Netherrealm’s intention not being to make a tournament fighting game, the same can be said and is widely known for Smash Bros Melee, and Ultimate. Yet both communities ran laps around MK1’s numbers at EVO for the last years that they were in.
At this moment MK 11 has more players than 1, it has more 24 hour peak than 1 and it has all time peak than 1, it hass been welcoming people again since May, so if they say that this is just because "Oh they are coming back because people are saying things of 1", NAH, is because the game has his problems and developers hasn't been doing the correct thing, MK 1 has been in the mouth of a lot of people saying that the core system isn't that great, that the animations look worst than 11, there are a lot of bugs that hasn't been fixed, and the interesting thing about all the people who denies the problems with MK 1 is that for example people hated the way they are monetizing the game, but SF 6 has people like that too and still people come back and still plays it, and you even has constants sales for sht like that, so they do stuff, MK just still doing what the people is hating and the response is going to be the same. If this is a market move to try to sell "Ultimate" editions, men, they are going receive what they deserve, hate, and there is not an excuse even for that, people hated UMvC3 saying that was a paid update to fix things, and what if MK 1 is going that route, there are no excuses for this people who denies, even the "But is because is on season 2", i can go and say that the game is on season 3 or 4 or 10 but its on HIS FIRST YEAR, that's what season mean on FGC, no that season pass BS, they even say it like that they said that is on season 2 so lets compred to 11 season 2 year 2, like no, compared to YEAR 1 because is on his year 1, and worst that even pushing 2 seasons whatever that means to this deniers they cant get people interested on the competitive, and it seems the only thing that keeps the casual is the homelander, etc characters. I just want to have an FGC place were we dont have deniers, we dont have this fanboy behaviour, that in the end is just going to endup closing more and more when all this years has been opening up more and more and has been amazing to know people from around the world sharing theirs stories and their passion.
Let's be real here. MK should have stopped being fighters after X and became action/adventure RPGs. They would sell even more than any of the MK fighters. People love MK for the violence, characters, story, and universe. An action/adventure RPG of Scorpion or Sub-Zero or even both as a co-op game is LONG overdue. They need to take a long break from making fighters and start having some fun with the series again. Do they even know how many people request Shaolin Monks 2 or even a SM remaster on a daily basis? Also, NRS needs to gtfo of WB. WB is another main reason these games are being ruined.
It's mostly Latin and Chinese players that play it, hard to play for a lot of people (even pros in other games), and the competitive scene is just as boring as MK with the constant mirror matches. Even worse since it's a 3v3 fighter, so there is always a huge chance for mirror matches.
I have heard it all now. That tweet is really trying to say that the game is doing so well that people are skipping EVO to play online and just wait for Combo Breaker instead? Insane cope.
Most MK1 players are from the USA. Most SF6 players are from Japan. Guess where is EVO Las Vegas located. Guess which players have more problems to travel to EVO. The travel hypothesis is just a bad excuse.
This was a really good video, and I am happy you put it out there. Hopefully it can get some recognition so any powers that be, or even the community themselves, can finally get together and take this dilemma more seriously overall.
After this video and other videos went up giving fair criticisms on MK and the situation, people took to twitter to make even more excuses for the game... Which I'll be covering later today.
I'll be competing in the big three this year but I'll admit that I'm way more excited to compete in the Tekken scene than I am MK. It's just much more dynamic and fun to watch/compete in when compared to MK. It's a shame since MK9 was what really got me into fighting games.
Another valid reason why fans of NRS games don't show up for the games -- and I think Maximilian -Dood touched on this with his argument about both NRS and SNK game low numbers -- is that the fans have been conditioned to expect a new game iteration regularly. So even if a game is good, but especially when it's bad, fans tend to drop the game to wait for the new game coming sooner-than-later. This could also explain why KOF15 numbers are down bad despite it being a good game (needs better netcode, tho). SNK has already shown that their next big focus is Garou and fans have already started to just wait for the next game instead of continuing KOF15. MK1 is heavily flawed competitive-wise (that Johnny Cage x Peacemaker fest of a Final Kombat did not do this game any favors...) and content-wise. So, a lot of the NRS fans just decided to drop the game and wait for the inevitable new game coming sooner-than-later.
It's pretty fire imo. If your a big fan of Melty Blood, it's made by the same devs. Just beware that it's old school anime fighter. So lots of movement, tight windows, and pretty broken characters that's all very balanced. However the single player content is LOTS of fun and you can sink a pretty good amount in it. I can't play online since it's that deep in comp but French Bread (devs) are wonderfully with providing good content to play by yourself.
They've been making poor decisions after poor decisions since mk11. Slowed down gameplay. Cameos not popular. Balancing issues. That's why it's bad. In mk9 and mkx, 2 characters didn't dominate everything. Nobody wants to watch the same 2 characters over again.
the level of disinterest when it comes to MK's competitive scene in Japan/Asia can be summed up with one quote "the best MK player in Japan is a blind guy from the US" this was during the PS2/3d era, but still rings true to this day
I've played NRS games for 2 decades now and MK1 has been quite a sad affair. MK11 was a flawed game for sure but no matter what, it still retained the appeal of a Mortal Kombat game. It was fun and bloody, it didn't take itself too seriously, and had at least for an MK game interesting mechanics. MK1 decided to go with assist characters for this rendition which I enjoy as a concept but the execution has been poor. Game balance has been shit since the beta and will remain that way for the foreseeable future. They've also completely lost the vision of being a game that pushes the envelope with MK1 being their most safe and vanilla attempt at an MK game. Then there's the actual launch of the game, which was so rushed that half of the gameplay features already implemented in MK11 and earlier games still haven't been added back in yet (we are coming close to 1 year since launch and still no online practice mode). The vibe we get from the dev team is that their focus is solely on pushing out their invasions single player content (the most mind numbingly boring shit you've ever seen) as well as pumping out guest characters who don't get me wrong are really sick but it's just adding icing to a cake made of shit. I've completely dropped MK1 for Tekken 8, where in years past I barely played Tekken but had always had been grinding MK.
Electric Underground does a phenomenal job demolishing the idea that the FGC is the be all and end all of fg’s, and he uses dead or alive 4 as an example. The problem with modern fg’s is they’re interested in being esports more than games. It’s an awful business strategy that is terrible for fg’s.
They tried the strategy that many of these new games do. Reduce launch content then try to compensate by monetizing content through skins and dlc. And on top of that, it's content is a complete downgrade from mk11 in terms of the amount of content from launch that it offers. I used to like mk a lot around mk10 as well. Mk11 was iight but I didn't hate it. But mk1 I dropped in a week. Gameplay wise, mk10 was the last good mk imo. Mk11 was a downgrade in gameplay from mk10, but it at least had some good offline grinds to go off of (if you're into that sort of thing) to keep u busy. Mk1 is just barebones and the gameplay was alright but not enough to keep me sticking to it. That's my opinion on it.
Well, it's because MK1 is trash)) the gameplay is broken, the characters are ugly, who even watch it? Especially when 50% of matches is a fight between DC superheroes. Is this MK, or we saw "the Boys" fighting game? Nether realms are not very well understand what hardcore MK fans want.
The patches and the updates that shut the game for a day kill it. The fact that there are only like two to three complete characters that can play without kameos no warrior shrine and online practice. But honestly what really what bothers me the most is no run/ rush down mechanic. That is why I like sf6 and before that mkx give me a run
I don't play any fighting games so I can't say anything about the quality of any of these games. I can say however that SF6 and Tekken 8 are very entertaining to watch, the characters just seem to have so much more impact on their attacks and watching high level players using all the features is thrilling. MK1 however has NRS's signature flaccid looking attacks and high level players all use the same cameos. The optimal playstyle in MK1 to a casual viewer appears to be: poke until you get in a hit, after getting in a hit try to go in for a combo, if combo is blocked then use cameo to keep opponent in block stun to escape reprisal and if combo hits then use cameo to activate 65-85% combo. With Twitch and casual viewership being more important than ever for players outside of tournaments, it is understandable that high level players will not sticking around because MK1 is just not attracting casual viewers.
M1K, after being let down by MK11, launched broken and incomplete with a gimmick no one asked for. Ten months later, M1K is still broken and incomplete with a gimmick no one asked for. Everything bad since then has followed suit, such as low sign ups, and deservedly so. When do we stop giving them excuses for failing their customers?
MK is doing almost everything it can to *not* retain people, actually. - Like a character? Well, they drastically change in moveset from game to game as well as their backstory and characterization , so no consistency there. - Like the story/setting? (I'm serious) Too bad, it gets worse with each new game and it's diving head first into that awful marvel multiverse brainrot that it keeps doubling down on. - Like playing competitive? Bad online every single time, at least at launch. Not to mention broken characters - And I don't mean just OP, I mean BROKEN like you just showed with Homelander. - Like watching matches casually? Animations get better at a glacial pace from each iteration, so even just for watching it doesn't always look good I used to be a big MK fan. *Used* to.
You know it’s embarrassing when Under Night In Birth 2 is above Mortal Kombat. Also, Mike, have you ever played Under Night before? It’s really good and far better than MK1.
Mortal Kombat is too casual IMO, it's really hard to go from another fighting game to a NRS one because the combos are boring, you memorize a few routes and repeat them until you win, and the games usually have very clear top tiers that are abused by all of the top players, and that also takes some of the fun out of watching it, nobody wants to watch a top eight of 2-4 characters used in nearly the exact same way by all the players
As someone who only plays Tekken I feel sorry for our MK brothers. I thought we had it bad. I think of NRS games as ones to play through the story and drop and at that point you might as well just watch a streamer play it. I can see DBZ becoming one of the three. Maybe Garou. Shame Strive hasn't quite hit that level.
@@zengaoI just bought it like 2-3 weeks ago im a die hard tekke n fan but its a little underwhelming imo its better than MK1 but i overall prefer Tekken 6 and TTT2 style of gameplay, I dont like all the heat attacks and special moves that mess up the flow of the game for me. But then again I could be what you consider a legacy player stuck in their ways.
One of the big reasons for mks downfall, especially in the competitive scene, is NRS likes to add things like invasions, extensive story modes, gimmicks and guest characters as the focus for the longevity of their game and game mechanics second. While SF and Tekken say we’re gonna focus on game mechanics first, then we bring in gimmicky things. Also as a Miami man and a heat fan I take some offense to that dude calling us bad fans. Glazing someone’s asshole and never being negative makes you a simp not a fan
If mk wasnt intended to be a comp. Fighting game, and doesnt have the numbers compared to other games, then i dont think it should be a big 3 fighting game
Mk is the quickest selling fighting game. When a new mk is released it sells like hot cake, BUT this is because ita casual driven and the pro or hobbiests are the smallest of their consumers, this mean its a game that die quick. Everyone knows it, ed boon knows it. This is why mk is more profitable by releasing new games than doing dlc or season passes. Why would investors (wb) give them more money to manage a good live service if they know money is on new releases? Its sad but its the nature of the market.
I came back to MK1 for Homelander played a couple matches and quickly remembered it's still MK1 got off and uninstalled Now I'm having a blast playing Bison in SF6
the only reason why Tekken 8 got that number because it was so hype before it's launch and during the 1st month of its release but right now, there are less players playing the game. from 49k on its honeymoon day to 5k per day while SF6 still going strong averaging 30k to 40k players per day on steam
I dont mean to be "that guy" but like... ive been watching mk tournaments for as long as i can remember and unless its like super recent. I dont remember seeing Saki Sakura commentating any top 8 tournaments in MK. It was only CEO when i first seen her doing anything really. I dont agree with what she said in the tweet either. All im saying is... for her to be speaking for ALL NRS players is just weird imo.
The only mk game i ever like was 9 story was amazing, great to play with friends, not convoluted mechanics like tag or 4 different ex bars, the supers were cool and you got them often but now you need a pixel of life and you get them like once. The story is awful everything just sucks
Cool, ignore all the games they were involved with that were super successful which is more than half. The gameplay and tournament marketing has nothing with your culture wars, it's the designers and publishers fault.
@jordanwhite352 They aren't even THAT involved in developing the games. They are talentless extortionist writers bent on destroying and not creating original ideas. Cope with that.
@@spectreshot8536 Every Game that I've seen with sweet baby inks involvement that has actually failed had issues with the actual game developers fucking up their own gameplay internally as well as bad business decisions such as monetization can probably shows and adding fucking pronouns to their characters. Fuck you're the same morons where when they re-released 1000-year-old door they actually made it even more accurate to the original Japanese source and you guys acted like it was woke garbage. So do you like so-called anti-woke Japanese stuff or do you like The source material which is super Japanese pick 1. This is why no one can take you guys seriously. And all you guys focus are fucking pronouns. You guys are getting what you deserve. You guys bought all that horse armor during elder scrolls and now we have all of this shit.
It’s painfully clear that MK is just a marketing tool for WB games, is riddled with DEI and the worst part is their DLC picks, they keep adding WB characters instead of legacy characters this is sacrilage for fans, just lool at SF6 the DLC picks are now controversial because they’re not SF characters even though they’re also fighting game characters, so they at least make sense when they include them, but MK? The f*ck is leatherface fighting gods, martial artists and demons and actually winning!?
MKX was so good. Idk how we went so wrong after that game. If they had made another game that was as much of an upgrade as MK9 to MKX, MK would be the biggest fighting game in the west.
I wonder how MK would be with new developers behind it. As much as NRS has been screwing up lately I could only imagine that it would be a breath of fresh air.
You made some really good points about them not really needing the pro community. Also from my perspective as an intensely casual player NRS games have become dramatically uninteresting. Rather than going off the feedback they got from their previous installments (MK9 and MKX) they completely forgo the style of gameplay because they wanted more focus on the neutral. I think in an effort to simulate something successful in the FGC. With the gameplay style being so forced now they’re stripping away the elements that made MK popular in the first place and that was its dynamic interactions and over the top presentation I.E MK9 and MKX. These are the games fondly remembered in the community and have that in common. Just my perspective on Mortal Kombat and why engagement is tanking
MK1's numbers are about 50% less of what MK11 got in 2019. Though pretty much identical to MK11's numbers 3 years after release. MK just never brought in huge numbers to Evo regardless unless it's the first year of a new MK's release
Honestly really funny that NRS is able to make characters so bland and ugly while the old MK games had real people in it, and a lot of the characters was just the same lady/guy with different colors. And still managed to look and feel less boring. Knowing the limitations and such.
@@akabkb6692 They arent ugly you havent seen too many pretty pepole in your life or you are just blind you are just a hater that follows everyone who hates on the game instead of allowing positivity in your life
I don’t agree with the argument of nrs changing the character move sets, I think it’s pretty cool that all the characters get fresh new moves in a new game that I buy. I’ve only played a little bit of tekken so I’m not sure how true this is, but I think it’s a little lame that a lot of characters just have the same move set as the last game. Just my opinion tho
I think the problem with NRS is that they are afraid to take big gameplay risks. SF6, and Tekken 8 had new systems implemented that changed the way they played and felt while still keeping it true to what they were. Every new MK game just feels like the same game with the same characters but with different move sets. Not to mention the engine they use is awful.
@@lilacrain3283 It was...........................and the decision kind of ran the game into the ground at lift off...............Definitely wasn't the best idea for any kind of competitive play and just came off as gimmiky. (which it was.)
I very much disagree with this. If anything, MK changes from game-to-game WAYYY to often. If they aren't completely visually overhauling the look of the series, they're changing the commands and wildly changing functionality of iconic moves (like Scorpion Spear) and doing stupid things like MK11's late meter burning system and its whole meter style in general. Legacy skill almost never exists in these games and yet they somehow keep dumbing down the series with progressively degenerate game design choices.

Mortal Kombat is not banned in Japan. It just wasn't released here, probably because it would get a CERO Z rating and sell awfully. If someone wanted to play it, it'd be as easy as buying an English language version, same way anime game players bought Japanese-language versions of games for many, many years.

Mortal Kombat was always a gonna be a novelty product. Even at his best moment, when 2 hit arcades, it never had more players than other more established FG IPs. @Nightmaroid I agree. MK2 is my favorite game in the franchise, loved MK4 even though it wasn't well received. But MK9 was a life saver for real
Depends how you look at it. Some older games are simply just too legendary. But I get your point.
How to save MK1 to do list:
- Add a proper buffer for the strings (like all well designed fighting games do)
- Stop fully changing the fighters movelist every game.
When I was mainly an nrs player I thought it was fine but switching over to mainly anime games has made me realize how shity it is.
what does it mean by proper buffer for string?
FYI: Mortal Kombat is not banned in Japan, just not localized. By that logic, Mother 3 is banned in the west lol.

@@remarkableputter6622 What is "well balanced"? Because whenever i check each different communities there are debates about balance issues in their games. Especially in the first 2 years. But a longer life with constant updates wont 100% guarantee the best balance either.
This has potential to be interesting and heartfelt. Mind explaining how you think MKX, 11 and 1 veered off the course? I don't mind wall of texts...
Keep crying lmaooo

Be condescending all you want, it's not going to save your games abysmal numbers.
@ChrisX_212
Sure thing.

Based on the "first Evo" history of previous MK games.
okay, the smiles in the thumbnails are uncanny. God it's so weird to see Ryu smile!

Mike I don’t know if you will read this. Why won’t the commentators, pro players, and large content creators say that this game is bad?
I mean, so many mid games gain a decent following even years after they release, like fallout 76 for example is still played by a good amount of players despite it's horrible launch, so it's really not that surprising that a game like MK1 has a dedicated playerbase despite it's flaws. I mean, that's kinda why the category "it's so bad it's good" exists. Some people just don't care about the overall quality or reputation of a game and simply cares about having a good time, doesn't have anything to do with age or staying in NRS good graces.

The fact that you have to compare it to the numbers of the past MK or Injustice games even shows how MK1 is currently taking an L. Last point, just go look at the history books.
I do post a lot about the game. I know it’s terrible. I’m just trying to look at the positive aspects, even though it’s severely lacking in most.
Damn how did you catch me with that Mario and gacha game point (albeit I only play 2)
That and the woke cringe and lack of diversity in the human characters. Who would’ve thought playing the same asian and blk characters is boring?
So you do realize that Asian and Black characters have existed in both Street Fighter and Tekken since their first entries right?
WB ruined my favorite fighting game, they believe getting out of bankruptcy is short changing their base...I loved when MIDWAY had the rights
I think we'll get DBFZ back next year. Depends how well community goes especially if it has higher numbers than a main stage title.

About the point of Netherrealm’s intention not being to make a tournament fighting game, the same can be said and is widely known for Smash Bros Melee, and Ultimate. Yet both communities ran laps around MK1’s numbers at EVO for the last years that they were in.
That zoom out bug at 16:00 had me weak 😂😂😂😂😂 reminds me of a cartoon skit 💀
Tbh maybe the MK devs should work on not making the game a buggy mess so casuals can enjoy it without there fav being a mess full of glitches
Kof in that position is just sad, we had some great tournaments in Evo
We might need to put a ban on NRS or Ed Boon from making games after MK 1
This game is a mess
It is just a shallow game compared to MK 9 and X. Lack of modes, useless cameo system, classic 1 vs 1 mode and so on..they ruined my franchise 😢
Imma say what a lot of us are thinking-
Netherrealm is out of the big 3, and Arc System Works is in.

They've been making poor decisions after poor decisions since mk11. Slowed down gameplay. Cameos not popular. Balancing issues. That's why it's bad. In mk9 and mkx, 2 characters didn't dominate everything. Nobody wants to watch the same 2 characters over again.
the level of disinterest when it comes to MK's competitive scene in Japan/Asia can be summed up with one quote
"the best MK player in Japan is a blind guy from the US"
this was during the PS2/3d era, but still rings true to this day
I've played NRS games for 2 decades now and MK1 has been quite a sad affair.
I haven’t played MK since MK10. Takeda was my favorite character he wasn’t in MK11 so I didn’t play lol. But why is MK1 so dead?
Many reasons. But the main points are unfinished, lack of content and how nrs managed the game after launch

There was a BIG glitch with Rashid when he released, but within the day, it got patched out.
You make an MK roster without Sonya and Jax, you can keep that roster to yourself
The patches and the updates that shut the game for a day kill it. The fact that there are only like two to three complete characters that can play without kameos no warrior shrine and online practice. But honestly what really what bothers me the most is no run/ rush down mechanic. That is why I like sf6 and before that mkx give me a run
As someone who doesn't follow MK that much, it was pretty telling to me that NinjaKilla has been grinding T8 more than MK1
Jun and Ryu are die laughing in the thumbnail 😂
😂😂
There are big 3, SF, Tekken and Guilty Gear.
The third member of the big 3 is Strive
Animations get better at a glacial pace from each iteration, so even just for watching it doesn't always look good
I used to be a big MK fan. *Used* to.
You know it’s embarrassing when Under Night In Birth 2 is above Mortal Kombat.
Also, Mike, have you ever played Under Night before? It’s really good and far better than MK1.
I've played it with some friends before. I can see why people like it. Definitely not for me but I think it's a pretty cool game.
Yeah that is kind of horrible. Never heard of that other game that you said in my life
@@xerospadesPlay it. It's good. Super niche, but good. Leagues above MK1 anyway
Embarrassing for whom, though? Uni 2 is a better game. Better gampleay, better value.
@@strippinheat For the NRS shills who think that MK1 is game of the year.
We stan for Sparking Zero. Hopefully people really jump on it 🙏🏾
Is Tekken 8 a disappointing game for fans? (I'm really curious)
The only real reason I have T7 is because it has the bowling gamemode
One of the big reasons for mks downfall, especially in the competitive scene, is NRS likes to add things like invasions, extensive story modes, gimmicks and guest characters as the focus for the longevity of their game and game mechanics second. While SF and Tekken say we’re gonna focus on game mechanics first, then we bring in gimmicky things. Also as a Miami man and a heat fan I take some offense to that dude calling us bad fans. Glazing someone’s asshole and never being negative makes you a simp not a fan
Exactly. It's always good to offer constructive criticism if it's glaring and obvious. There's no point in just glazing someone.
3rd strike being 25 years old and having more entrants than MK1 is extremely telling
I came back to MK1 for Homelander played a couple matches and quickly remembered it's still MK1 got off and uninstalled
Now I'm having a blast playing Bison in SF6
the only reason why Tekken 8 got that number because it was so hype before it's launch and during the 1st month of its release but right now, there are less players playing the game. from 49k on its honeymoon day to 5k per day while SF6 still going strong averaging 30k to 40k players per day on steam
I'd never seen her before either but don't mind her speaking on it. It's just her comments were all pretty weak.
The only mk game i ever like was 9 story was amazing, great to play with friends, not convoluted mechanics like tag or 4 different ex bars, the supers were cool and you got them often but now you need a pixel of life and you get them like once. The story is awful everything just sucks
MK1 got the Sweet Baby Death Kiss
Janet Cage confirmed their involvement in this crap. If it wasn't that, then it was Tanya's plastered face.
Cool, ignore all the games they were involved with that were super successful which is more than half. The gameplay and tournament marketing has nothing with your culture wars, it's the designers and publishers fault.
@jordanwhite352 Sweet Baby Inc has continued to ruin more and more games. Don't defend them. They're getting what they deserve.
And there are other games that add pronouns to their characters and they're also more quote" woke and they sell a bajillion copies. We have a real issues going on in the video game industry such as the lack of unions, the overworkness, the rushing of games, the closing of studios, microtransactions, live service, mistreatment of customers ECT. And all you guys focus are fucking pronouns. You guys are getting what you deserve. You guys bought all that horse armor during elder scrolls and now we have all of this shit.
KoF will always be the ultimate underdog, we may be small, but our hearts are LARGE! Metaphorically speaking…
What is this Ryu smile on a thumbnail? It is so creepy, I want it in a game (=
😂😂 it's done with the face app, bro.
It does my heart good seeing GGST still represented so well.
I wonder how MK would be with new developers behind it. As much as NRS has been screwing up lately I could only imagine that it would be a breath of fresh air.
Yeah imagine if Take Two ,Ea ,Epic or Ubisoft got there hands on Mk that be great 😃.

I appreciate any kind of MK bashing. MK1 is terrible.
MK1's numbers are about 50% less of what MK11 got in 2019. Though pretty much identical to MK11's numbers 3 years after release. MK just never brought in huge numbers to Evo regardless unless it's the first year of a new MK's release
They made all the characters kind of bland and ugly. I think they've alienated their fan base a little too much with MK1
they are not ugly you dumb fuck
Honestly really funny that NRS is able to make characters so bland and ugly while the old MK games had real people in it, and a lot of the characters was just the same lady/guy with different colors. And still managed to look and feel less boring. Knowing the limitations and such.
@@akabkb6692 They arent ugly you havent seen too many pretty pepole in your life

Not an MK fan but the whole cameo system seems like a huge gameplay risk
@@lilacrain3283 It was...........................and the decision kind of ran the game into the ground at lift off...............Definitely wasn't the best idea for any kind of competitive play and just came off as gimmiky. (which it was.)
This is the most 'I don't play or understand fighting games' take I have ever heard.
@@DemonKnight85 the biggest mistake about kameo is the fact kameon can make unsfae move becomes safe
MK became Warner's Smash bros. Just chucking whatever and whoever into the game. Not speaking of the millionth story reset.
MK9 is better than MK10 and 11.. they should have just stuck with that game 🤷♂️
clicked just to say I love all 3 and think the FGC should just be happy that we’ve gotten bangers back to back. all of them have been quite fun in my eyes.
Mk9 last real mk game
Real talk!
@@tmerchead1 i took it for granted and now I wanna buy a PS3 and game lol
I'm sure ed boon did too
Maybe WB gave him one free project then after that something took over the studios and took the game to a different direction against ed boon will.

They also kept interfering with existing projects too

Let's scrape this idea and turn it to MK instead :)

Mortal Kombat is not banned in Japan. It just wasn't released here, probably because it would get a CERO Z rating and sell awfully. If someone wanted to play it, it'd be as easy as buying an English language version, same way anime game players bought Japanese-language versions of games for many, many years.
