This game would have been dope WITHOUT the cameos. Imagine the same graphics and gameplay, but instead of cameos, 10 more playable characters, stage fatalities, frendships and mercy’s….This would have been an Epic follow up to MK11. MKX is still the Best MK EVER!
They also need more diverse combos for the characters, it’s gets tiring seeing the same strings and moves over after a while lol. AND THEY REALLY NEED to stop giving hype DLC characters like spawn, Homelander and Omiman weak combos lol. Like idk if it’s a glitch or not but Homelander has two air combos that are exactly the same lol.
Everything about MK1 is everything that goes against Mortal Kombat: • Lameos instead of Tag Team • Poke system that requires no skill • Lack of diverse combinations • Full arenas that are not completely accessible to fight in such as Johnny’s Mansion and the Teahouse • No stage fatalities • Mediocre outfit designs • Repetitive music soundtrack with 0 creativity • Horrendous single player game modes • Terrible DLC characters and character changes • Micro-transactions • A multiverse story mode that no one asked for • Servers that constantly and consistently disconnect • Unresponsive Fatal Blows • *WHO DID THEY MAKE THIS GAME FOR?!*
Almost agree. DLC characters are fine. And Fatal Blow has requirements to come out you can’t just mash it out whenever you want that’s a skill issue. The rest is totally obvious and understandable.
I realized that the moment I saw Conan the Barbarian of all characters. I legit went "do these fuckers not realize most of their players are likely in their 20s or early 30s?"
People who did not grow up in the mid 90’s don’t have the experience of what it’s like walking into an arcade or a 7/11 grocery store and seeing an MK arcade. I grew up playing MK1, MK2, MK3, UMK3, MK Trilogy, and MK4. Seeing an MK arcade then was like seeing your crush. It demanded your respect. MK games had a serious tine to it and didn’t take a back seat to any frigging fighting games of its time. 7/11 stores would rather have an MK arcade than a Street Fighter arcade.
Growing up in the 90's MK 2 cabinets popped up EVERYWHERE! Recently there is one in a mall I go to inside of a Foot Locker. Last time I went to buy shoes I took longer to pick them out because MK2 distracted me.😅
It's true.. video games are more of a 90s thing, especially fighting games. Everywhere had a Arcade or 2 of them or more! Like at Wal Mart, Pizza shops, laundry mats, gas stations, grocery stores. Gaming today feels like something that has to try so fn hard to feel relevant with all focus being on E Sport tournaments. In the 90s fighting games were just "Around" all over the damn place.. if you had a quarter, you could run some quick games with a possible stranger in the middle of buying groceries
Yep, Kameos completely ruined the essence of MK. We don't want assists or cringe superheroes. Keep that BS in Injustice. Hope they learned their lesson.
No it's on NRS. WB is the wallet the budget. NOBODY at WB said "give them assists to fight with" No that's NRS... ALSO nobody at WB keeps telling NRS to scrap the previous MK engine and make a new one. That costs more of the budget to build a game engine every 2 years to be prepared for a 4 year life cycle. Right now they're working on the next game. Imagine if they didn't rebuild the structure but added on to it? Using MKX or mk9 as a foundation. But they won't @@Marco.91
I think the Kameo system could have been a fantastic addition if it was implemented well. I think if they made every Kameo good and every character good it would have been a fun game
@@Bunchdudethis is basically the new mechanic of this poor plastic game. Hit + hit + block, then punish Hit + hit, cameo break or duck, poke+ punish. The cycle gets so boring to watch. Constantly backing up and ducking but no actual unique combos used. Everyone is spamming that 1 move including the pros.
@@BunchdudeI think the kameo system would’ve been really cool if it was like the mk11 assists they had, but they butchered it with making unsafe things unpunishable and braindead boring sadly
how is it the cameo its how people are playing the game what ever is "meta" every one just copys what some one esl is doing no one is carving there own path
I went to CEO for MK1. The casuals after Grand Finals were definately little to none. I couldn't even find anyone in Jebailey Land (which is were the after hour casuals were held). I thought after Grand Finals I was maybe gonna be able to play one of the top players but, I couldn't even find the players that took me out of bracket. Meanwhile, my buddy is over by Street Fighter getting games with all sorts of players in casuals, from FlashMetroid to Diago. I definately lost my motivation for this game competitively.
If it had been implemented as an on/off system and didn't repeat main roster characters it could have worked. Tag mode from MK9 would've been better OR 2 on 2 Kombat like in Ultimate MK and MK Trilogy.
I played MKX and MK11 and it’s funny to me that those games are better than MK1. The Kameo system ruined MK for me. When SF6 came out in June of last year I gave it a try and fell in love with the game instantly bc of the great mechanics and difficulty of the game. I was excited for the release of MK1 and couldn’t wait to play it. I stopped playing MK1 2 Months after release bc the game is just not fun. I am now a full time SF6 player and have been much happier switching to this game. Tom Is right when he says “I just have to accept the direction MK is going now and move on”. It’s ok to accept this fact then live in denial.
You should go back and try MK9 if you never played it. It's by far the best of the NRS-era MK games, and the only one my friends and I still play to this day.
Lots of choices really. I still love MK and will play mk1 from time to time whenever new content comes out. Just not as much as I did mk11 cause it is boring after fake hype from new dlc dies out.
The little playerbase left is saying that everything is fine and that this is all easily explainable and not the game's fault, so there's really no point for him to make this videos. The community doesn't want to hear this.
UnderNight 2 having more EVO entrants than MK1 has to be the biggest kick in the teeth for the "MK sells more/Not world wide" crowd. UnderNight 2 sold a small fraction of what MK1 did and has more players entering at EVO.
To me MK took everything good about Street Fighter and Tekken and ramped up the dial to 11. At one time I believe it was THE fighting franchise; after completely reinventing the standard formula of "stand 20 feet away and spam fireballs until you win" and REVOLUTIONIZED the fighting genre as a whole. Hell it influenced gaming in the 90's as a whole. It created the ESRB and made people think differently about how games could be done in general. Without MK we wouldn't have Grand Theft Auto, God of War, COD, Doom, etc. MK made gaming more mature and fighting games "FIGHTING" games! It was ALWAYS my favorite fighting franchise because it did things differently than other series. Now it has John Cena and Megan Fox. WTF NRS?!? Bring back MORTAL KOMBAT!!!
For me the fact they destroyed the lore killed MK for me. Years of gathering stories and lore from every MK game wasted. I just can't recognise the characters I love anymore. Thus I can't get excited for future installments.
I wouldn't mind the reboot if they actually stuck to their guns and did it 100%. New timeline, New everything. Instead they half-baked it, then forcing the original timeline to be ducktaped to this "nu era", it's a complete mess. Nothing makes sense anymore because they wanted their cake and eat it too. What was even the point in rebooting the franchise if they're just gonna do it again with MK2? Waste of everyone's time is all that is...
True, they literally ruin every character by making them some multiverse type of shit where all the creativity goes down to "ok but kung lao has sub zero powers". The story now is a mess that baited people into thinking it ended with mk11 but it's just a continuation.
@@TysonDylan0 MKX ran until 2019 which is when MK11 came out, so my point stands. less than 6 years ago. (nobody counts injustice we don’t play those games over here)
@@KingJadInfiniteHope Injustice 2 was the last great NRS game though. Call it what you want with the zoning but the game has everything we been lacking since mk11 and MK1 with only mk11 allowing custom moves. Kameos? Injustice 2 had them too! I’m a casual player and I love MK11. I hate Sub-Zero always get shitted on but I love how MK11 looked and the presentation I thought it was top notch from a casual POV.
I feel like I'm the only person who thought this game looked lame asf when trailers dropped. The fact that they keep rebooting the story says everything; they have no clue wtf they wanna do with mk.
Mortal Kombat didn't die with M1K, I would argue MK has been in a zombie state for years since even MK9 & MKX had it's major issues that got inflated with MK11 & M1K. the franchise started it's slow death ever since it's true creator, John Tobias, left Midway back in 2000 during the production of Special Forces. and while the writing wasn't nearly as good in the PS2 era, at least the franchise at that point was still somewhat consistent. and if MK Armageddon was treated as the true finale of the entire franchise, I would of been perfectly fine with it. now a days, I still think it's the last truly good MK game. the day MK truly died was during the release of MKvsDCU because that's where all of these problems that has been growing with the franchise truly began. it was the catalyst to the low tier writing and the poor quality character development and the constant retcons, and there's no way around it anymore. and it's not just the games that suffered from this, it was also the adaptations that came & went since 2011. and none of them has any long lasting appeal like the older films & TV shows did even as far as entertainment value is concerned. it's just as bad as Disney's Star Wars which is the closest comparison I can possibly make. and just like Disney's Star Wars, it has killed any enthusiasm that I may have had with this franchise to where I simply cannot support this franchise under these clowns due to the bad decisions and poor quality content that has been given to us. I blame Ed Boon, I blame his writing team, I blame NRS, I blame WB, and I blame the fans who supported this travesty. and at this point, I'd rather support the older MK games from 1992 to 2006 when Midway was Midway and MK was at it's peak.
If you're tired of covering MK1. Coming from another who has been around since 1992 and the first MK. I'd be so hype to see you cover some of the previous titles and your experiences & memories. I'd really like to see you cover your thoughts on like competitive MK4 arcade or MK Deception. I remember playing you online back in MKD, MKA, MK vs DC, etc. Such differences I always wondered what other og players really thought of the older games.
It’s cause the combos and special moves are super easy to learn and most characters use the same buttons for a combo start and same goes for special moves lol. I feel like mk X and 11 had more difficult to pull off than 1 does lol. And actually took precision to land like Lui Kang kicks and juggles or just playing as The Collector I always whiffed his combos 🤣🤣 mk1 took me like 5 secs to learn Omi man, johnny, shao, and basically every ninja character combos/specials☠️ they need to start adding in variety
If given permission the community could make a better MK vs Street Fighter at this point. Imagine the 2 series coming together to compete and get buzz going around the whole fighting community? It'd be fun to see our two favorite series battling together and determining who's best once and for all.
@@Mene_the_Mentos08 MK 9 is what MK Trilogy SHOULD have been, minus the emphasis on Quan Chi and Sindel murdering everyone. MKD is still the best; at least of the Midway era of the 3D games, IMHO.
I’m not even mad anymore just disappointed and just feel dumb for investing so much passion into this franchise. I hate to admit it and feel stupid that a game had this much of an impact on me but at least I can recognize that it’s simply toxic at this point . Thank you Tom.
Im so sick of this dam sales argument.... McDonald’s sells millions of meals a day and the food is sht. Makes more than the 5 star restaurants down the street a year. Quality is going to out shine in any aspect of life and the tournament numbers wield this fact. It's not that deep of an analogy to understand. Not a hard concept to grasp but I'm referring to MK1 being McDonald's. Even though NRS time and time again gives us the bare minimum post injustice 2. People will still buy the next game cause it's MK similar McDonald's being bad for you yet we buy and consume it by the millions. Sales being used in an argument is irrelevant cause McDonald's doesn't get top chef awards in comparison cause the perception in the eyes of the fgc is that mk is trash.
Funny you say McDonalds, the characters in MK1 already look like happy meal toys compared to MK11. Omniman for example looks like he's made out of plastic. If that's NRS' idea for 'next gen', I say we go back to polygons. Because their new artsyle flatout sucks.
@@blok--head7472 THANK YOU I thought I was alone in seeing this as well. Injustice 2 character models look better than mk1.... Like seriously what happened?
Man I loved this video. I cannot imagine Tom without the Rick Flair level of blood pressure in its face and it made me laughed so hard. The content of what he's saying is on point tho. We will miss you not talking about MK, Tom.
I would say that the biggest problem here is that MK doesn’t necessarily have a legacy. I’m not talking about the popularity of the franchise, but the gameplay itself. Every Mortal Kombat game plays VASTLY DIFFERENT from each other. SF, Tekken, and even KOF are fundamentally the same game. They’re the same cake with different icing on top. MK changes every single time. The problem with MK1 is, they created a system that they don’t know how to manage. That’s why almost every patch somehow makes things worse. Idk, that’s just me.
Basically you’re saying MK11 and MK1 should have kept the same MKX core gameplay and expand upon the concept? I only played MK1 once and forgot if it played like MKX or MK11.
Completely agree. I think mk11 needed a big patch and it could’ve been better make krushing blows based on counter hit and useable more than once change the meter system make more ex moves juggle and make pokes negative, the fact they were safe is beyond stupid.
I share all the same views the game is stripped of everything mortal kombat used to be. The MK1 glazers are working around the clock to silence OG fans because they love the crutchy 0 neutral 0 skill BS mechanics that have been introduced. I’ll die on this hill.
Honestly, I want to go back to the good old days of Mortal Kombat. Where there was no such thing as buffs and nerfs for a character, dark atmosphere as to what Mortal Kombat was; dark, no microtransactions,no multiverse like story, having a krypt where you spend in game currency and making it creepy, and to me most important of all in my honest opinion, having a konquest mode, and no such thing as “Beef Set” online. I feel sad for MK because it fell out big time.
@@Locii97 I did the exact same. Because of the dlc picks were all my mains from my first mk. And the rest of the dlc I watch the shows and they game just had to be ass
MK11 moved the franchise closer to injustice. Its no longer dark and gritty or mysterious. Its just a bunch a crap with super moves that don't fit the characters. This MK is so bad but on a technical and corporate level. But the last 2 games were horrible in their tone and what the MK universe should be.
@@Forever.Remain.Nameless I don't like injustice but I do feel this was meant to be injustice 3. Its the worst mk games in years. With the popularity of DC, injustice prob brings in way more money so they focus on that more now it seems.
They mk universe has never been supposed to be dark and gritty tho? Even in the 3D era there was alot of colour everywhere. I love mkx to death but the one thing it didn't get right is the colours
As soon as NRS started altering character designs to capitulate to people who don't even play Mortal Kombat, i knew the gameplay would follow the same road. It's now a game for casuals who play it for a week then move on to a mobile game, and game journos that cant pass tutorial levels.
Consistency. Every mk is so different from the previous. SF and Tekken are extremely consistent in comparison. Sales numbers are attributed to fatality member berries period end of story it has nothing to do with excitement for it as a skilled based fighting game. It’s THE casual game with the most name recognition.
I'll definitely miss the, "poke, poke, poke, your turn, my turn" but the show must stop at some point. I look forward to the new content, best of luck and stay strong.
Takeda was probably one of the most hyped and anticipated characters in this roster. Releasing him so late into the game was a huge mistake many of us quit playing a long time ago.
A lot of us love you tom. Please dont stop making videos because whether we realize it or not, the community needs people like you to spread the truth and expose lies.
Mortal Kombat just needs to be bought by a better company/studio. I seriously believe that NRS and WB are "cooking the books" when it comes to the actual money they made from Mortal Kombat.
The issue is that wb forces nrs to reinvent the wheel every time. Ed boon said everything he wants has to go through a bunch of people higher up so wb definetly is the issue
@leulzelalem7121 and NRS and Ed Boon are also at fault for following those directions. Both WB and NRS can be blamed here. WB for giving bad orders and NRS for following those bad orders.
@@IANGEL101I i assume nrs is afraid of any kind of consequences theyd face tho as wb isnt as dependant on mk as say bandai namco is on tekken. Wb could easily make their development process hell
The game felt odd for me, i am a very casual player but the invasions was a massive almost mobile game like grind. The core game was fun to begin with but just got bored l. It has a feeling of they were really rushed and had to prioritise certain aspects
So true, MK1 is a piece of shit. Its unbelievable. It was my favorite franchise of all time, playing it since the real MK1 and this game make me hate MK. F U NRS, F U Warner Bros and F U Ed Boon. I watched in steam even MK11 has more active players online on steam than MK1 OMG. Thanks for this video
It’s a shame because I do think gameplay wise that MK1 is much more fun than MK11. But to think that a lot of people probably thought that it couldn’t get worse than MK11 here we are
@@dennismoose2152 MK11 had a boring combo system, the breakaway mechanic was terrible and being able to get 30% off of a random yolo D2 is probably the worst thing in a fighting game ever. MK1 is way better than MK11, but Tom is right about the power level being too low in MK1. Characters should be massively buffed. A casual will experience losses whether the characters are overpowered or the characters are weak as hell. Whatever a casual lost against most recently is what they will cry about needing to be nerfed.
For the record, I loved playing MK11; I think MK1 sucks to play. I don't feel like MK1 follows MK11 much at all, sans basing the whole game around a Towers of Time gimmick from MK11. But the prominent “Fighting Game Community” and EVO crowds DIDN’T like MK11, so it felt like MK1 tried to go, “we want to get this crowd” and the appeal of Mortal Kombat hasn't really aligned with that at least in my lifetime. NetherRealm is a nice cow, who looked to the sky, saw some birds, and wanted to be like that. So it climbed to the top of a tree and said, “Look! I'm a bird now!” And the birds looked back and laughed.
With CEO having 114 and EVO with 645 while T8 and SF6 have 4-5k+ shows, it's dead. They had their sales pop 30-90 days after release. Since then radio silent on sales when back in October 2023 they said almost 3M units. The casuals microtransactions money will not save the game nor increase actual SKU unit sales.

Thank you for your contribution to the community Tom. You had some of the most hype moments during MK9, I still go back and watch those matches. Always loved seeing you on commentary, some of the best talent the scene had to offer. Wish you got to commentate ever since NRS started their Pro Series. Thanks again for everything
The numbers make perfect sense if you think about it literally at all. More people buy MK, but it doesn't retain its players for long. Casuals buy it, play through the single-player content, maybe dabble in online a little, finish with it and uninstall. MK1 failed the casuals so they left really fast. Mystery solved.
Looking at the excuses people are coming up with for this game kinda breaks my heart... Their love for the scene is performative...... It feels like the end... Or just an extreme low
What makes it really bad is when you look at their competitors. Take Capcom for instance. Street Fighter 5 released in a terrible state and people were not happy with it. Capcom not only kept supporting the game throughout its entire lifecycle but released a big major update for it DURING C-19. Street Fighter 5 was essentially overhauled, while they were working on Street Fighter 6. There is no excuse for the state of Mortal Kombat. You really have to question the leadership, the decision making, and mindset over at NRS. Do they even care about their Franchise anymore? Do they care about the loyal fanbase? or are they just chasing after the bag because they know most people will buy it regardless of what they put out. The content creators who say nothing about it, make their living off of it and they know who they are. So I get why they're acting like MK11 and MK1 are 10/10 with no misses but, you have to call a spade a spade and stand on principle.
My wife and i would watch a bunch of mk11 tournaments and enjoyed watching fun come backs. Mk1 is boring and spammie and watching everyone use chameleon is lame.
Good on you for moving to things that will make you happy! ❤ I feel your pain and dissatisfaction with Mk1. I know you will find better things in the future!
Dogshit kameo system, lack of content, no krypt or konquest mode, bare bones customization, and watered down characters that are totally reliant on kameos, which again is dogshit. What the hell was NRS thinking with this game? At this point I just hope WB crumbles and is forced to sell the franchise. And whoever buys it should do a clean house.
I called it from day 1 of the release. Kameos would ruin this game. MK11 for all its flaws, by the end of it wasn’t terrible and was playable. All they had to do was add to that and they would’ve had a solid level game.
What are u smokin on dude??? It’s like overwhelming how much hate MK11 receives for being a bad game casually and competitively. By no means was MK11 “not terrible” it was indeed terrible and MK1 is quite literally MK11 with add ons( new art style, kameos,)

It’s sad that something we both loved has been such a disappointment the past years. Maybe we are just getting older but regardless whatever you post I’ll be here to support. Thank you for always being honest in the community no matter how people perceive you. Part of the reason why I enjoyed your videos is because I knew you weren’t in it for money or anything you just had genuine love for the game and it’s sad when we see the thing we love become something we despise
people need to start waiting a couple months before they buy a game to look at more gameplay and reviews to see if its actually worth it. also nrs did a 50% discount a couple months after release.................seeing them charging $10 for a fatality and for skins ruined this game for me. also same boring combo routes

MK11 made me hate kids... fall in love with a six armed money lender. debate endlessly if I like 'ninja Shang' or 'oldman majik Tsung'. and so saved two outfits/loudouts for each. MK1 made me rehate MK3. rehate timetravel. make me endlessly debate if this applies to theDoctor or not. finally decide that theDoctor gets a pass. Pocket dimension but unequivocally "I HATE TIME LINES!". made me rehate Maegan Fox. you where not sexy when I was 12 and playing MK (something). your pink hat makes you less so. glad you got paid. go back to obscurity. still hate children. Cage made me laugh ONE time in 13 games, 4 movies, and endless cosplays. (mimecage's battle mime made me pause the game... that's one!). this is the first time I hated playing as Shang Tsung. i don't like any ov the characters. i paid 100 to play as my boy Shang and I regret being a fan ov the franchise for so long. 'story' and 'plot' boiled down to 'shoot colored lights at something till the controller rumbles'. every season it boils down to 'if you are not playing (usualycage) you should not be playing'. love the invasion idea... hate almost everything about it. movement on the map is guesswork. slow. 'remeber ALWAYS have one key on you' and inventory management selling'dropping/using useless 'buffs' just so you can maybe pick up a slightly different ugly shade for a character you don't like. 'use for permenate' isn't peremenate... its 'for this invasion' level system means skill doestn matter much and you just level up till you can cheeze win the boss. rewards are laughable. ill keep an eye on it. if Kollector or D'vora comes back I may test it out... it did fill me with a philosophy 'never preorder and wait 6 months after release date before you buy'
MK9 & MKX is when Netherealm was on absolute 🔥 & at their peak since then the quality of their games has dropped considerably. Gameplay has gone to 💩 Monetization, decimating character lore & stories & finally the agendas they are now pushing, we aren’t stupid it’s obvious. This is no longer Mortal Kombat!!! I say that as a fanatic that also played through every era since the beginning!!!!!
I blame NRS and only NRS for the downfall of Mortal Kombat. Yeah sure, WB doesn't make it better but I can just ignore the microtransactions. I don't even think that the microtransactions in MK1 are as bad as in Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8. But MK1 does so many other things wrong and all of them I can somehow tie to MK1. 1. Ed Boon doesn't do anything anymore. At this point he is only a mouth piece. He says that he has the final go on every decision the studio makes but I don't think he is the right person to make decisions anymore. For example him totally taking out the sexy out of Mortal Kombat. He said he couldn't do outfits like those in MK9 anymore because times have changed. No, they haven't. What blue haired whales on Twitter think doesn't matter. They don't even play those games. Ed Boon also seems to have a hard-on for changing characters. Probably because he thinks that he has to keep re-inventing Mortal Kombat and bringing something new to the table for it to continue pulling in a large audience. And while that is probably true, I don't understand how those changes can be directed towards characters like Kung Lao or Smoke who play nothing like they've played in the past. Imagine taking out iconic moves like Kung Laos teleport or Smokes Smoke Bomb. It's ridiculous. 2. The game mechanics are shit. Why is something as bad as D1s in the game? I'm more of a casual player who still watches a lot of tournaments and even I hate seeing D1s in game and even more so during tournaments. And they have been in MK1 forever with somehow getting obnoxiously oppressive in MK11 and MK1. They've nerfed them in MK1 and they're still a shit mechanic. But in MK11 it was pure horror-terror, especially considering how much damage the throws did in that game. 3. Some characters are gimped for absolutely no reason. Why does Smoke require cancels for his basic BnB combos? Without them Smoke is half a character. And those cancels come with different timings per string, weird unintuitive inputs and online during bad connections you're even more likely to mess them up. Same with Ermac. Same with Homelander. Why does any character require weird cancels for combos? Tom once said how Ed Boon was concerned the players wouldn't be able to input simple QC motions to perform fireballs. I have a hard time believing that considering the finger gymnastics I have to perform to execute a MK cancel. And that's just cancels during combos. The combos themselves are absolutely ass. Why does a Mileena BnB EX combo include a side switch, micro dash, juggling and is all twisted in the corner? Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 are not overly convoluted like that. Even Lilis side step combos have a much more natural flow to them than the weirdly laid out stuff you're supposed to do in MK1. Maximilian constantly complains about MK1 combos being way harder than SF6 and T8s and all too often being overly complicated for no reason. He tried playing Homelander and after a while gave up because he would constantly have to actively think about what he was doing and never got into a flow state where he could just do cool stuff. 4. Many outfits are garbage. They're overdesigned and look amateurish as if they've been created by a bunch of interns. Cool outfits in games usually make me pick up new characters I wouldn't have tried out before. In Overwatch for example I was never interested in playing support heroes but Zenyatta getting a skin where he looked like the Egyptian sun god Ra totally did it for me and I picked up the character. And then in MK1 you have characters like Tanya who have two absolutely hideous skins and all the new stuff you can get for her are ketchup and mustard recolors. There is barely any incentive to play and grind in the game to unlock new stuff. And again, from the perspective of a casual, those are absolutely crucial elements in a grindy online game. I want my characters to look cool. And the skin I use on Smoke is his alternate default skin which you get at mastery level 18 because that's the least shitty outfit he has. On Reptile I was using the very default outfit for the longest time because H didn't have anything better. I think NRS suffers from two problems. 1. Old people. During the last podcast Tom said you should give Paulo Garcia full creative control and that he would make a powerful game. I don't think so. Paulo Garcia didn't have a win ever since MKX. Injustice 2 was a zone fest. MK11 was a boring borefest which was filled to the brink with bad mechanics. Many characters in that game were bad by default because they had bad Krushing Blow requirements. MK1 is bad as well. So that guy, as one of the lead devs when it comes to systems and gameplay... he hasn't been doing much. Their community manager Tyler is a American football obsessed clown who should be tweeting more about the game. That balding Derek guy who seems to be the person in charge of Invasions should be locked into a room and only allowed to leave it again once he completes all of Invasions and all of the seasonal tower levels which go up to level 80-90. Invasions is such BAD and BORING and HORRIBLE game design that I would enjoy Dereks soul leaving his body as he tries to get through that terrible, terrible mode. Invasions tells me that none of these people play their own game. And I can absolutely see the same being the case with the core gameplay itself. Ed Boon, as I already said, is a clown who should step aside and let someone younger and fresher take over. Preferably someone based, who finally lets characters show some skin again. That to me would show that Mortal Kombat is slowly healing again. 2. Overall incompetence. I work in the creative industry with many different people and very often you see how many lazy, incompetent people are around. People who just get by. People whose stupidity sometimes lets them get by and others do their work for them. And I believe NRS is filled to the brink with these people. Games are art. And the easiest thing in art is to make something look pretty. You can download Unreal Engine 5 and fill it with pretty items from various stores and sell it as your own game. But as soon as you start playing the game you notice that all of the systems and the gameplay are absolutely trash. That's something Blizzard struggles with as well. Their games look pretty. Their cinematic trailers are best in the industry. But then you pick something like Diablo 4 up, start playing it and you realize how bland the game actually is compared to something like Path of Exile. Or you have a game like Overwatch where the devs clearly don't know how to balance it so they sledge-hammer nerf characters like Roadhog and completely change them for the worse, just to deal with the problem - like NRS does it with Sub-Zero and the ice clone. And you wanna know what the wrong things is? I don't think any of that will change in Mortal Kombat 2 / Injustice 3. I think NRS will get rid of the kameos again and give the individual characters all the power and options... but those will be tied to some kind of a new system / mechanic / requirement / whatever... and it will once again be bad. The game will look pretty as well. I assume it will also have way more content and be more polished than MK1 was, considering that they won't be switching engines in the middle of it this time around. So you'll have everyone and their mom, including Tom Brady, start playing the game, be happy... and then slowly but surely everyone will recognize the new NRS stink in the new game as well. And everything will be tied to that new thing NRS has created as well more destructive changes to beloved characters. Like I can totally see them having Raiden and Kitana bang right in front of Liu Kangs eyes because when you're woke you somehow always also end up having cucky tendencies. I've seen it too often on Twitter already.
It’s so ironic that you have a collective of people preaching about how “we need to foster the community” and then simultaneously say “all the ‘haters’ are bad actors for clout” No shade Tom, but I don’t don’t think you’ve even made enough money to afford 3 months rent for every UA-cam view you’ve made since MK1 dropped. That’s not alot of money for shilling, especially for an individual that has practically been in the scene since its BIRTH. It’s a weird idle worship for an IP that almost TRIES to get in the way of fostering not only the community, but also the games life itself.
Personally I don't like watching or even playing MK1 the gameplay is simple and boring. Somehow NRS made MK1 worse than MK11 and I never thought I would say that.
I just found you today and I will subscribe. You're real for the comments you've made about MK and I agree with a lot of what you said. I was hyped for this game and had hopes that it would be great, but I was left more than disappointed. I basically completed the story mode as I wanted to see how the events would unfold and I haven't bothered playing the game since.
11:40, onnnn godddd this is me. Mk1 lost me for sure. There's just something missing. I got no drive to play it, or even watch sets. I used to watch MK11 tournaments all the time. I think the kameo system is the equivalent of the krushing blows. Yeah, sometimes they're cool, at the beginning they're neat, but then it just boils down to repetition, and ease of use. I feel nothing looks interesting in mk1 and the meta became so stale, and in an assist game, there's always gonna be a meta. I never thought I'd say it, but the variation system. Even the terrrrible custom system in mk11 would have been better. Plus this time era multiverse stuff is burnt out.
I’m pretty much a Japanese fighting game guy exclusively. Really don’t know anything about MK after playing MK9 for the story mode. But dude your passion is inspiring. Got me through multiple videos explaining the state of MK1. Sorry it’s in the state it’s in and NRS doesn’t seem to know what to do.
Remember when MK9 dropped and we all lost our minds: “MORTAL KOMBAT IS BACK” and then we had a super fun sequel in MKX? Good times.

😂😂 true
Mk was my favorite fighting game since the 90s. This is the first time I have liked street fighter and tekken more than mk.
Same
To me MK took everything good about Street Fighter and Tekken and ramped up the dial to 11. And you have all the blame for it
I wouldn't mind the reboot if they actually stuck to their guns and did it 100%. New timeline, New everything.

I fw it bro it was getting old but you’re jumping ship at the right time, I’ll support whatever you do next
🤣🤣🤣
Legit lol they could have got me last year! Glad i saved that money for Tekken 8
A lot of us love you tom. Please dont stop making videos because whether we realize it or not, the community needs people like you to spread the truth and expose lies.
Mk lost its identity. It lots it’s grit and edginess. Probably the last MK I’ll allow myself to get excited for
Mortal Kombat just needs to be bought by a better company/studio. I seriously believe that NRS and WB are "cooking the books" when it comes to the actual money they made from Mortal Kombat.
Honestly I couldn’t tell you which studio would be viable for them. All major studios today blow. Probably just make everything worse
Most of these failed projects are money laundering schemes
The issue is that wb forces nrs to reinvent the wheel every time. Ed boon said everything he wants has to go through a bunch of people higher up so wb definetly is the issue
@leulzelalem7121 and NRS and Ed Boon are also at fault for following those directions. Both WB and NRS can be blamed here. WB for giving bad orders and NRS for following those bad orders.
@@IANGEL101I i assume nrs is afraid of any kind of consequences theyd face tho as wb isnt as dependant on mk as say bandai namco is on tekken. Wb could easily make their development process hell
This was the truest and most epic rant that I've ever heard about a fighting game.
The game felt odd for me, i am a very casual player but the invasions was a massive almost mobile game like grind. The core game was fun to begin with but just got bored l. It has a feeling of they were really rushed and had to prioritise certain aspects
true WB only knows how to support mobile gacha grinders
So true, MK1 is a piece of shit. Its unbelievable. It was my favorite franchise of all time, playing it since the real MK1 and this game make me hate MK. F U NRS, F U Warner Bros and F U Ed Boon. I watched in steam even MK11 has more active players online on steam than MK1 OMG. Thanks for this video
It’s a shame because I do think gameplay wise that MK1 is much more fun than MK11. But to think that a lot of people probably thought that it couldn’t get worse than MK11 here we are
thats news to me mk11 was dope and felt peak to me and my family, but mk1 was a huge let down
@@dennismoose2152 MK11 as game is amazing it came to the markets as a complete package. The issue for most of the community was the gameplay aspects.
Mk11 was more fun to me
@@dennismoose2152 MK11 had a boring combo system, the breakaway mechanic was terrible and being able to get 30% off of a random yolo D2 is probably the worst thing in a fighting game ever. MK1 is way better than MK11, but Tom is right about the power level being too low in MK1. Characters should be massively buffed. A casual will experience losses whether the characters are overpowered or the characters are weak as hell. Whatever a casual lost against most recently is what they will cry about needing to be nerfed.
@@lordtark6736 mk11 was incredibly fun to me too, nor sure why people disagree but to me it was cool
NRS doesn’t give a Fk. I always bought MK bc of hope it would be similar to MK9, but I realize that won’t happen so i won’t buy another MK again ever. Vote with your wallet
In three-four years Tom will release "Mortal Kombat 2 killed Mortal Kombat".
And then another 5 years after that he will release " Mortal Kombat 3 killed Mortal Kombat"
@@unknowntyrant1005and maybe just maybe the developers will say "you know we understand mk 2 is ready maybe we should focus on a new injustice 3 game". Because suicide squad ruined everything for the DC side of gaming so far.

The only reason outside of personal friends I even got interested in being halfway good at MK was you. It sucks to hear you so disillusioned about something you love so passionately, but I agree with you: if it ain’t fun, no reason to push it.
Imma stick around though. Wanna see where you go next.
I don't enjoy the kameos, that is one of the biggest reasons I don't play MK1.
Anyone else realized that this video was actually about MK11 ??
Best mk of all time
It’s really good imo 11
The numbers make perfect sense if you think about it literally at all. More people buy MK, but it doesn't retain its players for long. Casuals buy it, play through the single-player content, maybe dabble in online a little, finish with it and uninstall. MK1 failed the casuals so they left really fast. Mystery solved.
Good point. I still pop in mk11 for a time waster sometimes but I'm a casual and not even I'm buying mk1.
Does anybody know if there is a discord to play MKX or MK9? Trying to find a community who still plays those games and have some fun.
I’ll probably just to have buy a PS3 to play MK9 again.

Mortal kombat choose voice acting, graphics and story over fun gameplay with content. I’m hurt .
Looking at the excuses people are coming up with for this game kinda breaks my heart... Their love for the scene is performative...... It feels like the end... Or just an extreme low
Well W.B wants to continue doing these live service games so yeah, it is the end of MK in terms of quality.
RIP MK 1992 - 2023
This feels like the end of an era.
Sf6 is where it’s at.
Found out sweet baby Inc had a hand in this game and everything makes sense
I went from mk1 enthusiast to hater in 3 months i legit mostly play granblue versus now its genuinely fun hopefully takeda saves us🙏
Alright, who's gonna tell him?
@@vibemasterkorosu2469 please let me dream bro
Honestly it's too late for Takeda. He shoulda been a new main character after MKx.
@@akyiret MK1 is absolutely terrible. MK11 once it had been out for a couple years had a lot of its issues fixed. Also, no multi verse nonsense and was authentic MK characters. MK11 is better than MK1 as we stand here right now.

Crazy that we haven't even exchanged our thoughts on this topic yet and everything you're saying is in my video lool. Should be encoded in like an hour or so. UA-cam is kicking my a** today with its speed.
I've been a fan of the franchise since 1992 arcade game and this is the first MK game I legit have absolutely zero interest in. It's so bland, soulless and mediocre The general presentation of this game gives me the same kind of vibe as a glass shop in a shopping mall.
EVO is 90% from NA, so it's even scarier.
Been telling my friends, that there’s a new head to the big three, Guilty Gear. It’s Street Fighter, Tekken, and Guilty Gear, I’m not the biggest fan of GG, but I’d be stupid to say it’s dead.
Gen Z be like: it's not yours anymore, MK is ours now to do with as we wish. First order of business, making Cyrax and Raiden trans!
*evil laugh
Tom been watching you since the start of MKX and I learned about fundamentals from you whenever I had a question I always went to your videos.
We all know you're not a "hater" Tom. If you weren't as passionate about the franchise as you are; you wouldn't be wasting your energy covering this trash heap of a game.
People aren't playing MK1 because the game sucks. Every other reason people come up with is an excuse. If the game wasn't shit, people would be playing it.
I appreciate what you do, brother. I've been a fan since MK1 arcade, and it's upsetting to see them constantly taking backward steps. Much love
Brother don't lie you ain't quitting 🤣 you might take some time but you'll be back with new content/the next MK.
As soon as kp2 is back Tom will be there
That’s gonna be years from now my friend I think he should def cover something else

Gameplay has gone to 💩
Monetization, decimating character lore & stories & finally the agendas they are now pushing, we aren’t stupid it’s obvious.
TOM,WE RLY NEED UR VIDEOS
No we don't
Lol no
It’s so ironic that you have a collective of people preaching about how “we need to foster the community” and then simultaneously say “all the ‘haters’ are bad actors for clout”
No shade Tom, but I don’t don’t think you’ve even made enough money to afford 3 months rent for every UA-cam view you’ve made since MK1 dropped.
Tom can you cover SF and Tekken scene? And can you also cover the FGC history from your time starting out to current scene?
switched to tekken 8 and have had so much more fun on it then any time i’ve played this game , makes me sad as a lifelong MK fan
I hope NRS goes out of business
