Alan Parsons Project has a whole album of Edgar Allen Poe called Tales of Mystery and Imagination. One of my favorites is the Cask of Amontillado. My favorite APP song is Don’t Let It Show, I want that played at my celebration of life after I am gone.

    Good choice.
Of course, I'm sure everyone here at least knows Parsons from his contribution to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, but his solo project is amazing.

Ah, the times in the seventies where you bought a vinyl album like APP Tales of Mystery and Imagination and played it from start to finish, again and again and again....

It's hard to gauge the cross-pollination of musical sounds and ideas between The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Alan Parsons Project in this era. Alan Parsons and his time at Apple (the Recording studio re Beatles) producing really upped the quality of all these "prog adjacent" bands.
His mixing of Pink Floyd songs with sounds of clocks and airports on Dark Side of the Moon, made that album just a super amazing bit of history. The song "Any Colour You Like" actually sounds like an Alan Parsons song to me.
The Alan Parsons Project was a dual writing and producing effort by a sound engineer and a composer with real musical theatre expertise. This makes their music ultra clean, ultra dramatic, literary, and even though it was the disco era, and the constant beat was a signature at that time -- rock and soulful ballad based.
They know when to be lilting, when to add a bit of ragged edge, when to pull back and smooth out to give the listener a bit of a breather. The addition of slower, ambient (we call it ambient now, there was no word for it then) beats and flow is something noone was doing at the time, (Pink Floyd was experimenting with real long intros already, tho, slow builds.) I suppose In "A Gadda Da Vida" by Iron Butterfly (1968) may have been some kind of template there.
It is great that you have begun your APP journey, and great that you are starting at the beginning as well. You are probably right that you have heard some of their later hits -- "I am the eye in the sky, looking at you ..." , the Chicago Bulls theme song is APP, "Time .. flowin' like a river ..." , maybe a few others.

Orson Wells had such an amazing voice. I played Parson Project's "Pyramid" on 8-track over and over in the summer of 1979 while I was sculpting in a garage. There's one song on there that drove the crickets absolutely crazy "Hyper-Gamma-Spaces". ••••••• "Poppin' in tunes"

First time I listened to Alan Parsons, I was in college, circa 2007. A professor from the lab I worked introduced it to me and I'm so thankful for that. Each and every song is a masterpiece.

APP is an amazing band and has been since the 70's. I love their tripping vibe and overall progressive rock spund. It's been a while since I have heard this. It was nice to hear it again.

Whilst I watch a lot of reactions and drill downs, I really appreciate you for choosing unique music, not just following what the rest are doing. Alan Parsons is one of those Artists that each song can be listened individually, or comprehensively as part fo the album.

It takes real talent to take a well-known Edgar Allan Poe poem or tale and distill it to a three- or four-minute rock and roll song as engaging as those produced by APP.
Eric Woolfson, the chief songwriter for the Project, released a sequel in the early 2000s called "Poe: More Tales of Mystery and Imagination" and even adapted it as a stage musical at Abbey Road Studios (and available on DVD). He even took Poe's poem ""The Bells" and set it to music. Wonderful!
I hope you share your journey through the Alan Parsons discography with us. Your effusive enjoyment of these first two tracks was infectious. I, for one, can't wait to hear more.

When this album csme out I was in junior high and in English class we were studying Poe. I remember reading the book and then listening to the whole album and just got hooked.
On the original release of Tales Of Mystery And Imagination, the Orson Wells narration wasn't there. It was put in when the album was remastered in 1987.
I have listened to the first 10 albums from APP since they each came out and love all of them. They are 10 separate stories/journeys that are best listend to in each of their entirety, just like Dark Side Of The Moon that Alan Parsons worked on.

Thanks Tommy, I can't tell you how glad I am that you liked it, really liked it. To be honest I've had this song in mind for a few months but hesitated. I thought that it wouldn't fit, be too soft, too nice, too strange or something like that.
I've made a full circle with APP, I started listening to them in the early 80s with the early albums and as I grew older I moved on to the more contemporary stuff but now, at 57, when I am old and wise (fans will know) I'm back to the early albums. Today I'm not a big fan of the later albums. They're okay but far from as imaginative as the early ones.
There's a benefit to having just two members and then hiring musicians for new albums, you won't get stuck in old wheel-tracks. You'll get a more contemporary sound by default with new eyes, fingers and ears. That is if you're open to it and I think that Parsons and Woolfson were just that.
I understand your thought; Is it already over!? Well, there are pros and cons to concept albums. One of the cons is that the albums tend to end when you're really in the groove. 😂 I hope that you understood my thoughts about a kind of circle, and perhaps liked it. // Swedish Pete

Long time fan of Alan Parsons and Alan Parsons Project. I often go back to their songs when I need to move through emotions. I am so glad you found them! Another one I think you might like is The Fixx. I would recommend starting with the song Outside. Not well known, but very good.

    Hi Tommy!
This band is the best one , out of metal genre, using orchestra and choirs...and I know very well what i am saying because over the last ten years I ve been buying many albums of rock and metal with symphonic orchestra , so that I own aprox 150 cds with this particular theme...

...well: its not really 'over' at the end of that song - the whole album is connected - its a concept album...if you like this, there's a fairly rich discography behind it with a lot of excellence... besides of following through on this album I could also recommend their 2nd; opener: 'I robot' and same of their 3rd one, Pyramid: 'Voyager - into - What goes up' - the true depth of APP's works comes forth, when listening to a whole album in one go - its an experience!
PS. I like your philosophy about the channel! 💖

I don't recognize most of the artists in your channel, so I guess you do mostly contemporary stuff. Man, you've missed out! No wonder this classic piece blew you away! There are so many rabbit holes of classic music to uncover. All amazing, especially the progressive rock. Moody Blues, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Steely Dan, ELO, ELP, Supertramp, The Who, Yes, Renaissance. So many more. I see you've discovered Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull. You're on your way!
