  • This song is very special - here’s some background.
November 15, a new musical opens on Broadway called How to Dance in Ohio. This musical is about a group of young adults with autism, played by performers with autism. Being a performer with autism, clearly, this is very special. They have released a few songs - and I fell in love with this one.
Anyone who knew me when I was younger and at in-person school, knew I was kind of in constant motion. I think better by humming, tapping, moving - not the easiest person to sit by in class. When I find something I love - I completely immerse in it (kind of why I’m 14 - in 10th grade - taking AP Calc lol). This song talks about the feelings of learning to mask some of these quirks to try and appear more “normal”
I actually got an audition and video callback for this show - but I am too young to be in it right now. I'm hoping it’s around for a few years so I can be.
We know one of the producers and asked if we could purchase sheet music for this song, but it’s not available yet - so I’ve been listening to it, and working on learning how to play it by ear. In a period filled with auditions, callbacks (grateful) and midterms, it’s not quite where I hoped it would be, but hopefully, you can hear how beautiful the music is and how powerful the lyrics are.
Here’s Under Control from How to Dance in Ohio. Look it up, follow, and support the show. I have tickets for November 16 and can’t wait to see it.
