Alabasta has actually gone up in my favorite arcs as the series went on. A big part of this is that this was the beginning of all of the changes in the world of One Piece. With Crocodiles defeat, the World Government needed a new Warlord. Blackbeard would eventually take this spot with the capture of Ace, which led to the Marineford War, which led to Blackbeard ascending to Yonkou status. Despite it being so early in the series, the Alabasta arc has had a ripple effect that has lasted to this day.
Well it give you that feeling because in a way it mark an end for one piece after alabasta the arcs will start to delve in serious stuff the declaration of war agains the goverment the straw hat separation and what you could call the end and rebirth of the series the battle at marine fort, alabasta was just a sample of what oda could do with an arc that involve a kingdom
You left out a small detail, and that’s the realization Smoker has when he’s saved by Zoro. He has a sense of what’s good and what’s evil in the world, which grows with his character as the series progresses. But nailed everything else either way
Oh HELL YEA ALABASTA! This Arc marked a big turning point in the series regarding length and scope of the stories that will be told! Also my favourite Strawhat pirate, Nico Robin finally joins the crew after this arc. I cant wait until you get to Enies Lobby since that is my favourite arc in the whole series!
I'm actually watching the Alabasta arc right now...I can say without a doubt the albasta arc is much better in the anime.... we spend more time getting to know ace, the filler is enjoyable, and the fight between luffy and vivi is much more epic & emotional in the anime... If you fully wanna enjoy the alabasta arc. Watch the anime...
You're right but one thing the manga did better were the satisfying punches from Luffy. The manga shows us close ups of Luffy's fist driving right into the enemies' bloody faces. It's pure satisfaction to see such an image, whilst in the anime, the punches are too fast and just boring. I was much more satisfied when Luffy punched Wapol and Crocodile in the manga than in the anime.
Still my all time favorite One piece arc even to this day. Reminds me a little of Laurence of Arabia (amazing film watch it when you have the time). Whole Cake and Water 7/Enis Lobby are exceedingly close, but alabasta is a special arc for me that officially made me a One Piece fan for life. I can think of maybe two arcs in all of shounen I prefer over it (Chimera Ants and Dark Tournament)
I think the fight of Usopp and Chopper's opponents, we got to know that objects are able to "eat" Devil Fruits and gain the abilities, which was unheard of at that time.
GrandLineReview since Vegapunk was the one who invented it, maybe when we FINALLY meet him (and see what he looks like- physical and character design wise) we will know more about the DFs and other scientific mysteries that neither us nor the hard core fans ever thought of. But won't know when and what arc he will be revealed.
Seriously, love your reviews! There are so many UA-camrs I want to shorten their videos. But you always make me want to hear more! I’d like to hear a deeper break down of the arcs!
Alabasta is one of my favorite arcs, especially when it came to the fights. Each straw hat had to quickly find a way to beat their opponent, while being held back for their own reason.
Honestly, people always harp on about Luffy vs Rob Lucci as THE best fight pre-timeskip, but I just can't agree. I've been binging the series since January, up to the halfway point of Fishman Island currently, and NOTHING has come close to the climax of the final fight against Crocodile. The Dvorak score, the intensity, the visual spectacle of it is just unrivalled in the series so far for me. Marineford was a hell of a battle but it's so spread out and unfocused compared to Luffy vs Croc. There have certainly been better MOMENTS, but not better fights.
Well, the fight itself isn't anything too special. Luffy basically just batters Crocodile around until he breaks the hook and sends him flying. As a character moment though, it's probably unmatched in the series. The Lucci finisher comes close, but Crocodile's defeat is far more satisfying because of all the build up in the previous arcs with Vivi. Like Katakuri, Luffy doesn't have any particular animosity towards Lucci, where he has a looooooooot with Crocodile.
GreenBird i see what you mean with the character moment, Lucci takes it for me cuz I feel like Luffy was outclassed by his skill whereas Crocodile had gotten fairly lazy skill wise he relied on his power that's why for me I prefer Lucci but stilllll x
To this day, Alabasta is still my favorite arc in the show. I understand why some like later arcs more, and Enies Lobby is very, VERY close second for me, especially since Robin is one of my favorite characters, but this one just hit all the points that I wanted it too. I was never disappointed with this arc and I still go back and rewatch it now again just to see all the moments I love again. It's also one of the reasons I can enjoy the Episode of Alabasta movie. Yeah on it's own and with no context it's not great, but seeing all these fights with the new smoother and faster animation is a lot of fun! To top it off, the Straw Hats saying goodbye to Vivi is a scene I can watch over and over and I'll tear up every single time. The first time I saw it I remember crying with a big smile on face when they raised those arms into the air. Wow, look at me gush. I'll stop.
Vivi had a second though lesser moment in Alabasta as she pleaded with the guards and the rebel citizens to stop fighting. It was extremely well done and showed her passion for all of her people. Sure it's overshadowed by her speech to Luffy and the Strawhats, but it's still a powerful moment for her character. Also, this is the arc that establishes Luffy and Bon Clay's epic friendship.
This arc is where Luffy is shown to be much more than the simple optimistic boy we thought he was. "People die" - It was an eye opener for me that Luffy show a side of maturity and lecture Vivi on her naivety on wanting everyone to be safe, that no one have to die and suffer and that trying to stop a civil war without rooting out the main problem (Croc boy) is honestly pointless as he would just try again. Even then, he understand that he and his crew are pirates and would only make things worse as why would the rebellions listen to them in the first place, pirates are scum in the eyes of the people, not heroes. This marks the moment where Luffy isn't your typical Shonen protagonist, at least for me.
Then you have Luffy actually punch Vivi when gets too out of line, too delusional, and that's also extremely rare to see. Feminism makes it where any strong reprimand of a female, especially physical is a no-go, but Luffy is a pirate without any scruples, so he just goes for it. The only other male shonen character I can remember also being willing to do this is Blackstar, and he actually got Maka's approval beforehand as she had punched him earlier in a fight.
Alabasta , still one of the best Arcs in One Piece, and so many good new and old Charackters, Smoker, Ace, Crocodile, Mr1, Bon curi, (mr.3) , etc. I really like that the ImpelDown Arc for bringing the Barock Agents back.
After Arlong, this arc really ensured I was here to stay. The battles, introduction to the epic Ace, Usopp standing up to defend Luffy’s dream, Karoo and his squad coming through, and saying goodbye to Vivi, just great
This arc also had GREAT filler with Ace that wasn't present in the manga, surprisingly enough, because it was absolutely seamless in the anime and provided much needed character and heartwarming moments between brothers that was just entirely absent in the manga. That's the one thing One Piece can do very, very well. Filler. Usually the most groan-worthy thing in anime adaptations can sometimes even be better than canon material in One Piece.
I just realized crocodiles fruit made him feel like he was invincible without water but I hope the time skip he learned how to use haki and realize he is not that strong so he needs to work plus his plan was good but he was also out smarted by mr, prince
I think since we are "almost" out of WCI arc, in the Reverie arc, hopefully, King Cobra will get to have more development to him since he (and us fans) has a lot of questions that need answers to.
Alabasta Arc is really special for me... I mean I was there with One Piece from the beginning... But after this arc I was fully dive into the one piece world... 🔥🤩💪🏻
I’ve started watching one piece (the dub I’m unapologetic in that regard I think it’s great and deserves more credit) this year and it’s quickly become one of my favorite shonens and shows in general and I have to say thank you for your well spoken and detailed one piece content. I hope you become king of the one piece UA-camrs one day you really do need to change tht channel photo tho lol
One thing I'm not so fond of is actually king cobra. He just felt like a really weak monarch and that Crocodile's rebellion was less the result of his brilliance and more the result of Cobra just being far too weak and ineffective to deal with any real pressure. He even specifically said that he was not going to put much effort into protecting his authority. He was more of a ceremonial king than any real authority.
U forgot to mention Bon-Clays epic sacrifice for the straw hats where he distracts the marines. Although they were his enemys, after everything he still saw them as his friends. And to top it all off, he goes to impel down where he plays a major role and sacrifices himself for good... properly. I am not sure if he is dead
Idk man, something just didn’t click with me. I fully acknowledge the importance of the arc in the story and Crocodile sets the bar high in terms of intimidating villains. That being said, the arc didn’t feel enjoyable (for me) and I almost lost my shit when the camel admitted seeing Baroque Works members back in the first city. I honestly think that I would’ve had a better experience if I was reading the manga as I only started enjoying Enies Lobby once I stopped watching the anime (though some friends told me that I should go back to the anime starting from the Sapaody Archipelago arc (currently almost done with Impel Down)).
back in 2016 I decided to watch one piece and binge watched from episode 1 to dressrosa(part were luffy was about to transform to gear 4 vs doffyfor the first time). I started watching the subbed version but somewhere around alabasta is when I decided to switch to english dubbed because I felt the pacing was too slow even by my standards and too much unimportant dialogue to read, but then returned to watch the subbed version when I caught up with the dubbed episodes at impel down.
Alabasta is one of the best arcs in One Piece to date! And Sir Crocodile is still one of my favorite villains of all time. In fact, the character inspired me to create my original villain character, Toshineko Hirozaki.
Tbh I love several moments of alabasta arc but in a way I find it kinda ridiculous at the same time. The rebel army leader is a teenager who’s been bratty to the king since he was a child. He wanted the king to use dance powder for the rain so they’d have water, but they’re on an island where even the strawhats didn’t take long to go back and forth across the island despite all their detours. If looking at the wano arc where water and food is almost completely unobtainable it’s more understandable. But here they had ways to get water and as Toto stated the rebels were faithless fools. But I did love the last fight between luffy and crocodile, the music during luffy’s gum-gum storm was so amazing I really wish they played it more often
A finnomenal arc in all respect. Practically glued to my pc during that time. This arc made me first respect Oda for his story telling ability. The anime also did justice to this arc.
i felt like the Alabasta arc just didnt have enough Sand ya know, i feel like they could have added one or two more metric tons, but thats just my personal preference .
I remember watching the Alabasta Arc as a kid but I didn’t finish it at the time. You gotta keep in mind, this was back when a single new episode would air every week. This made the previous arcs seem long and and made Alabasta go on forever. Now that you can watch the whole arc in one go, I can see how good it is, especially the last part were everyone in the crew is fighting. I still prefer the Arlong arc though because of Arlong himself. I thought he was cooler than Crocodile and a bigger threat to Luffy. Once Luffy figured out how to beat him, he was basically finished. Arlong on the other hand, had no exploitable weakness.
Afraid not! I'll agree that it is by far the best filler out there, but if I did one filler arc, I'd have to do them all. I'd rather cover them in a separate series.
Everybody talks about Enes Lobby and Marine Ford but to me story wise Alabasta was the greatest and Crocodile is the best villian he is the epitome of what a priate is ruthless power hungry extremely smart evil
no mention of the "Mr. Prince" reference or Robin's reveal of The Will of D? He didn't break that vow to Judge either. Not like he came out as a Vinsmoke prince.
@@GrandLineReview I understand that however I thought that was an important mystery which has multiple implications for future events. Mysteries are a key importance to the overall story.
This arc was... interesting. Hated it in the beginning, where I think it had some real clunkers of episodes. Yet, the final ten or so episodes were probably the best of the series so far. Overall, ambitious arc and very mixed. Not my favourite by any stretch of the imagination, but still good and I respect it
@Kirishima and Edward Gang I hear a lot of people love Krokodile. For me, he was a bit two-dimensional. Would've really appreciated clearer motives. But his design was really cool
Spiderfan85 my personal dream theory is that during the reverie cobra asks too many questions regarding the void century and the wg learns that the nefeltari family actually protects a poneglyph. so they decide to deem the nefeltari family as traitors and sends cp9 or cp0 to assassinate them. vivi flees while cobra is assassinated and the wg takes over control of alabasta. thus she can only find refuge as part of the straw hats. but I doubt that happens
buciallstar without usopp luffy would have been turned into a toy by sugar without usopp robin would have went through the gate of justice and many more
Hououin Kyouma and? he did all that stuff after he joined. he only became a straw hat, because he was friends with luffy. he had no purpose. he is neither a cook, a doctor, or a navigator. he is physically weak and afraid of everything. but he still joined and always happens to be at the right place at the right time. even if vivi has no current position to fill, she would have things to do if the adventure continues. heck, carrot has till now zero plot relevance, and people want her as a permanent straw hat.
4:48 I hated Mr. 3 but I will admit that he did open up the gate and although some argue that without him they wouldve gotten the key lets not forget the key was on his wax ball
Currently reading drum island arc, should I watch the anime or continue reading the manga? I am enjoying the manga but I feel like I'd miss out on stuff by sticking to the manga.
I'm seeing both the manga and the anime at the same time, but the pacing for Drum Island in the anime was pretty bad and I'm considering dropping it. I haven't seen the anime for Alabasta yet so I'd say do what you want to do Edit: why am I replying to a 5 month old comment
So I’m rewatching One Piece with a friend (his first exposure to the series in general) and we just recently finished this arc When my buddy saw the last episode of the where Robin joins the crew he had a million and one things running through his mind about what Robin joining the crew would mean and what her role would be but for now has landed on the assumption she’d be the anti-hero member of the crew My response to that was “Let’s just say she has one of the best character arcs in the series’ history”
The fact is with everything that is happening in the New World especially Straw Hats VS Kaido and Big Mom in Wano Crocodile can carry out his new plan without anyone noticing.
Tashigi is a really amazing one piece character, from here to punk hazard Usopp and Chopper’s fight genuinely enthralled me. I made a video portion dedicated to them and this fight in my franky plush video on my merch hunter channel
Speaking of Ace, was there ever an explanation given for why he had the letters ASCE, with the letter S crossed out, tattooed on his arm? I always assumed that he tried to have his own name tattooed on his arm, only to almost misspell it ASE, and have to try to salvage it by crossing out the S.
*would _have_ , not would of. "would of" doesn't exist in the English language. Also, it should be "I wish Vivi _had_ joined the crew". Yup, I'm a shameless grammar nazi.
+GrandLineReview I've heard this said a lot, and I've also heard it said about Arlong Park. For me, neither was true at all. I didn't enjoy Alabasta all that much the first time I read it. In fact I wasn't fully in love with the series until Water 7. In fact until Water 7, I wasn't even sure if I really was gonna keep reading.
I loved the video, but if Vivi stayed with them Robin would have had a much harder time joining the group, which I wouldn't mind, it would actually be really intresting to see the friction between those two.
Pluton wasn’t located on Alabasta. The Poneglyph gave information on its location. Pluton is the blue prints passed down by the shipwrights of water 7. The very blue prints burnt by Franky (Cutty Flam) on the tower of justice during the Enies Lobby arc.
That’s just speculation based on an ill informed question asked by crocodile. Another piece of information is that Franky makes a bet on the Straw hats regarding Nico Robin’s fate. He Burns the only known knowledge of Pluton that CP9 has been searching the whole world for since the Ohara incident. Which posses the question. Why hasn’t the most secret intelligence agency found this Pluton that exists in Alabasta? If it does. Just also seems weird to put the poneglyph that tells of Plutons location on the island it’s located (I.e. the grand belfry poneglyph that was originally on Jaya telling of Poseidon’s location on Fishman Island. Love and Respect the work. Keep it up
Mr. Prince and the Sh*tty Restaurant is the main reason that the SH's were able to escape Rainbase. It wasn't as simple as kicking a Banana-croc; Sanji was leading Crocodile around by the nose at every turn.

and then the riverie. imagine if crocodile did not defeated by luffy. maybe BW will visiting marie joa
It's in the top 3 for me
For me alabasta arc is very boring fam. Pacing is slow.
The arc really had a 'series finale'-y feeling in it at the end.And the final gum gum storm on crocodile with the epic music caught me off guard.
I guess that's good since I suspect that the live action will probably only make it to the Alabasta arc. haha
I cried so hard when Vivi said goodbye to the Straw Hats. I wanted her to join so bad. I'm happy we'll get to see her at Reverie, though.
She’s the first character that got a eye catcher without being in the gang
When they raised their arm with the X's 😢
Nah she annoying

Yeah it's my favorite too. Croco boy came the closest to killing luffy (3×) over all his other opponents.

At the end of each arc review you should rank the arc compared to all the others in a list
A reminder: Cobra and Vivi are both officially recognized World Nobles/Celestial Dragons, unlike Doflamingo, who is no longer recognized as a noble.
Mystery Personthing Nefertari didn't leave their country. only those who live in Marijua considered CD.
Please actually watch this arc and don't rely on his reviews he makes great reviews but this arc is so good that you actually need to watch it.
Alabasta is a masterpiece!! 🖤💙🖤
Alabasta is one of the best arcs in One Piece to date! And Sir Crocodile is still one of my favorite villains of all time. In fact, the character inspired me to create my original villain character, Toshineko Hirozaki.
Crocodile when Luffy shows up for round 3: Do you know the definition of insanity?
There are a few “what ifs” in Alabasta. My favorites being “what if Zoro joined Baroque Works” or “what if Vivi became a Straw Hat”
A finnomenal arc in all respect. Practically glued to my pc during that time. This arc made me first
respect Oda for his story telling ability. The anime also did justice to this arc.
i felt like the Alabasta arc just didnt have enough Sand ya know, i feel like they could have added one or two more metric tons, but thats just my personal preference .
Agreed.
Beautiful description
Yup same i remeber watching it on cartoon network
best arc ever
Will you be doing G-8 since it’s a highly regarded filler?
Afraid not! I'll agree that it is by far the best filler out there, but if I did one filler arc, I'd have to do them all. I'd rather cover them in a separate series.
Ok then.
It's a review, not a recap. Not everything is going to be mentioned.
@@GrandLineReview I understand that however I thought that was an important mystery which has multiple implications for future events. Mysteries are a key importance to the overall story.
this arc is awesome
This arc was... interesting. Hated it in the beginning, where I think it had some real clunkers of episodes. Yet, the final ten or so episodes were probably the best of the series so far. Overall, ambitious arc and very mixed. Not my favourite by any stretch of the imagination, but still good and I respect it
@Kirishima and Edward Gang I hear a lot of people love Krokodile. For me, he was a bit two-dimensional. Would've really appreciated clearer motives. But his design was really cool
@Chip_Kipperly Oh yeah same for sure! Though Ace being introduced made it slightly better
Can't believe only after this point, GrandLineReview became an Usopp fan. Smh, USOPP FAN SINCE DAY 1!
Its time for one more best channel comments Video!!
Sure is! ;D
I'm kinda hoping Vivi joins the crew after Reverie. A man can dream a man can dream.
She is useless why would she join
Hououin Kyouma usopp is useless, why would he join
buciallstar without usopp luffy would have been turned into a toy by sugar without usopp robin would have went through the gate of justice and many more
Hououin Kyouma and? he did all that stuff after he joined. he only became a straw hat, because he was friends with luffy. he had no purpose. he is neither a cook, a doctor, or a navigator. he is physically weak and afraid of everything. but he still joined and always happens to be at the right place at the right time. even if vivi has no current position to fill, she would have things to do if the adventure continues. heck, carrot has till now zero plot relevance, and people want her as a permanent straw hat.
Last time I was this late Kakyoin still had a chest.
Cages Last time I was this early Kakyoin still wasn't a donut.
The Worldo!!!!!!
I haven't seen the anime for Alabasta yet so I'd say do what you want to do
Edit: why am I replying to a 5 month old comment
@@Dylan-Frost yup dropped the anime for exactly the same reason.
The middle of this arc DRAGGED.
Not really. How so?
I would have loved to see a Vivi vs Robin fight in Alabasta.
i am on chapter 3 right now. it triggers me that it says rubber (insert luffy move) instead of gum gum (insert luffy move)
So I’m rewatching One Piece with a friend (his first exposure to the series in general) and we just recently finished this arc
When my buddy saw the last episode of the where Robin joins the crew he had a million and one things running through his mind about what Robin joining the crew would mean and what her role would be but for now has landed on the assumption she’d be the anti-hero member of the crew
My response to that was “Let’s just say she has one of the best character arcs in the series’ history”
The fact is with everything that is happening in the New World especially Straw Hats VS Kaido and Big Mom in Wano Crocodile can carry out his new plan without anyone noticing.
I am re-reading alabasta and its super fun
Tashigi is a really amazing one piece character, from here to punk hazard
Usopp and Chopper’s fight genuinely enthralled me. I made a video portion dedicated to them and this fight in my franky plush video on my merch hunter channel
When Bon-chan sacrificed himself for the straw hats
Speaking of Ace, was there ever an explanation given for why he had the letters ASCE, with the letter S crossed out, tattooed on his arm? I always assumed that he tried to have his own name tattooed on his arm, only to almost misspell it ASE, and have to try to salvage it by crossing out the S.
King of Salt Mountain It's a Sabo foreshadow.
I wish Vivi would of joined the crew
*would _have_ , not would of. "would of" doesn't exist in the English language. Also, it should be "I wish Vivi _had_ joined the crew". Yup, I'm a shameless grammar nazi.
Mark Hogan no one gives a shit
It would have been great of Vivi join the Straw Hats so cute!
8 crew members that would’ve been, she would’ve been a great straw hat
You either will continue one piece or drop it after that arc
Yep yep. If it doesn't have you at Alabasta, it never will.
+General Yousif Well yeah, that's true of every arc, by definition. After every arc you either continue or you drop it. There's no third option.
I loved the video, but if Vivi stayed with them Robin would have had a much harder time joining the group, which I wouldn't mind, it would actually be really intresting to see the friction between those two.
thanks for this its a great recap cuz im rewatching and wanted to skip alabasta
At some point in this arc Ace mentions that he will see Luffy again at the pirate summit. At what summit is he referring to?
This video was just the length of time it took for my dog to decide where to do his business in the yard.
I specifically timed it that way just for you.
Thank you. That's so thoughtful.
Pluton wasn’t located on Alabasta. The Poneglyph gave information on its location. Pluton is the blue prints passed down by the shipwrights of water 7. The very blue prints burnt by Franky (Cutty Flam) on the tower of justice during the Enies Lobby arc.
No, Pluton itself does still exist. The blueprints also existed.
Keep it up
Have you ever thought of reviewing the TV specials like heart of gold for instance?
I have! It would be in a different series though.
I bet he wasn’t expecting Dressrosa then.
Mr. Prince and the Sh*tty Restaurant is the main reason that the SH's were able to escape Rainbase. It wasn't as simple as kicking a Banana-croc; Sanji was leading Crocodile around by the nose at every turn.
I watched up tell maybe half way through skypeia and lost complete interest it was very hard to keep watching
1:34 Usopp seems to be choking on his manju.....
