You’re one of the only video essayists who actually provides unique commentary and historical context, a lot of which I’ve never heard before. Really impressive. I’d pay for feature length content.
Hey! It's this guy again. 15k subs? You popped off fast. Your videos are really good so I'm glad to see interesting, non AI videos. Keep up the good work. I subscribed when your fake town video came out, I'm going to turn on notifications today.
tor is rocketing up my favorite channel list. ty for the absolutely charming content sir, its been a genuine pleasure to binge. truly appreciate all the work you've put in to make these 🤝
Great video as always. Papal shenanigans is always a good source for funny content. As a little correction: Renaissance Humanism and Enlightenment Humanism (Which is what we typically think of as humanism) are different ideas. The Renaissance idea of Humanism, to try and explain this to the best of my ability (which is mostly from having to learn about it when studying art history in Uni), Renaissance Humanism has more to do with the idea that the study of the humanities (as in the liberal arts, philosophy, literature, art and architecture, ect., though this was typically centered around Ancient Rome) is a moral virtue necessary to create a virtuous society. It is a very common mistake to make, I am pretty sure my secondary school history book made it too, but there is that difference
yesterday your channel popped back into my head after not seeing you on my recommended for a while bc I wanted to hear the theme song.. several videos later: came for the opener, stayed for the content
"Before I discovered your channel, I was pissed off! Now I'm thoroughly pissed ON!" Also now I can't stop hearing Sinatra singing the old Cole Porter tune: "When they begin the beguine."
I love this channel so much there are so many things i want to look up and research and find out because of you!! Youre awesome and this channel makes me so curious
As an Italian I need to specify: Bonifacio 8th was surely meriting hell when still alive, and Dante provide to it in the Inferno, but he was actually a legally elected and a recognized pope by the cattolics. The Blood rain in Brescia,as many supposed cases in history is probably a meteoreological anomaly, with algae or rich in red soil and dust, mixed by the wind with the precipitation..
This was a fascinating watch. My first thought is, Marozia's actions don't sound super different from her male counterparts of the era. Like you said, it was a cutthroat time. It wouldn't be surprising if contemporary historians painted her as a monster for political reasons (a la Julia Maesa and Elagabalus- I'd love to hear your thoughts on those two if you ever made a video about them).
I love topic suggestions! People have already asked if I'm related to Jack Parsons. I'm not but I wish, and I'd love to cover him. In fact I do have an episode in the pipeline that, while not about Jack Parsons himself, does kinda share some DNA with his story, sorta touching on links between nerdy tech people and occult/neopagan stuff, more in the present day but Jack Parsons is definitely the godfather of that phenomenon.
Man you had like 8k subs when I finally watched that Utah fake town video that kept popping up in my feed and about a week later you've already nearly doubled that many subs.
I was waiting the whole time for a Conclave reference and I nearly choked to death at the CUMCLAVE poster. It's only a matter of time before someone makes the inevitable porn parody, and that had better be the name when they do.
I feel so lucky to have found such a cool channel so early!!! I think you should share cited sources though, especially with the speed of your production. I am a little more wary of after the brainfuck that was hbomberguy’s plagiarism video last year…
i have an urge to say i like your politics but honestly i think its something in your tastes and inclinations that actually tickles me... your immaculate vibes
Fun video but unlike the video on _HIM_, this one... really needs more context to make sense of it. Calling Marozia "Pope" just because she held political power over the Papacy is like calling Odoacer or Julia Maesa "Roman emperors". Marozia was the power behind the throne, certainly, but never occupied the papacy as such. Now there is an interesting side note. I've never really seen anyone speculate on whether "Pope Joan" was transmasculine because "Pope Joan", well, is a fictional character who never existed. It'd be like saying Grendel's mother was transmasculine. There's never been a woman pope, but there _was_ arguably a woman emperor Julia Maesa was the power behind the throne of much of the Severan Dynasty of Roman Emperors in the early 3rd century CE - figures like Marozia do have a long historical precedent. Among the people Julia Maesa made emperor was her grandchild, Elagabalus. Elagabalus allegedly really wanted to be a girl. To the extent that they allegedly offered half the Roman Empire to anybody who could give them, uh, what might now be called "bottom surgery". Ancient history can be... less than fully accurate. Elagabalus was universally known as The Worst Emperor. If a historian hated an emperor, they'd just make up terrible stuff about them, whether or not it was true, and in ancient Rome, well, about the worst thing you could say about a guy was that he wanted to be a woman. Plus, ancient Rome didn't have the same ideas about gender people do now, so calling Elagabalus "trans" would be, at the very least, anachronistic. That said a lot of trans women _do_ see Elagabalus as something akin to a trans woman. If you're gonna make a case that there was ever a woman who was Emperor of Rome, Elagabalus would be the on you could probably make the best case for. If you're interested Mia Mulder did a video on the topic, that's worth checking out.
And now for my requisite knocking on of biogenic cellulose. Please dont peak with papal teabagging. Please dont peak with papal teabagging. Please dont peak with papal teabagging. Im good now.
I very much doubt anything recognisable as Transsexuality existed in the middle ages. I think such a concept could only really emerge after the enlightenment and more so after the increase in skeptiscm afterward.
I thought they were checking to make sure the pipe wasn't a Castrati. That practice has actually ALWAYS been prohibited in the Catholic church, and therefore a Castrati cannot be pope.
Bro, this feels so 2009 youtube and i appreciate it. Hope Michael Vsauce finds you.

I'd recommend the channel Atrocity Guide if you want more that's similar to this and also great quality.
