- I usually wait longer before coming back to a band, but I had to bring back more Big Country! This obviously had a different feel from "In A Big Country", but it's still beautiful. Adamson's passion is second to none. Thank you to you guys for recommending this group! Also, on a completely different note, happy 79th birthday to Jim Morrison today.
Thanks for watching!

21 years ago on December 16 2001 we lost lost a great talent Stuart Adamson.
R*I*P Stuart
Greatest singer and bad I've ever seen live. Absolutely brilliant. Chance was always a high point at any concert.
At their mid 80s peak, no band anywhere, stadium or pub, platinum sales or one hit wonders, anybody anywhere could match Big Country Live. Nobody.
You sir are 100% spot on! Saw them Spring Break ‘84 in Daytona Beach. 2nd row center with a cooler of beer and they blew everyone away…totally away. Three weeks later found me in Blighty on a student exchange at Sussex University in Brighton and The Crossing was my main soundtrack. What a band, what a sound!
Insanely great live
He came like a hero from the factory floor with the sun and the moon his gift. If I had written that I would die a happy man. Stuart, amazing talent ,sadly missed.
Even now this is still the crowd's song, partly mourning Stuart, mostly celebrating. ❤️
Beautifully said.
👍
This is my fave song from Big Country.... The Crossing as a whole is a masterpiece.
Great to see a Big Country reaction beyond "In a Big Country".....as a 50 something Scotsman this band has a huge place in my heart with so many memories tied back to this album and its follow-up Steeltown (well worth a listen by the way). Had the good fortune to see them live several times during the mid 80s through 90s and for all that their studio albums demonstrate their undoubted musical talents they were a peerless live act.
Even though I've only heard a couple songs, I've come to really love them. Such a big sound.
This album was massive in Spain. And this song has a huge place in my heart too.
“The Crossing” is a great album with no bad song on it. Give it, as well as “Steeltown” a listen.
NO BAD SONGS! I play it all the way through each time and want more.....
Yet another track from my youth. This album is fantastic ❤
Back in the day, I played the hell out of this album and song. It still sounds as good now compared to 80s.
Adamson was a Fifer. Fife's new town is Glenrothes where I'm from. I live in Wales and this song makes me homesick even though Glenrothes is a dump
Greatest band and lead ever.period❤
Love your reaction mate. Try the songs “Where the Rose is Sown”, “Steel Town” and “Just a Shadow”. Masterpieces.
I saw them live in Ipswich 1985. They had 7 encores. Amazing.
I saw Big Country live on the Steeltown your in Glasgow Apollo on 21st of December 1984, Still remember to this day,
God, I wish I could've seen them live. It would've been magical to see Stuart in person.
So many amazing songs on that album. "In a Big Country", "Harvest Home", "Fields of Fire". amazing stuff
Fields of Fire ..The first hit is brilliant
Great band, great album and great reaction...
I remember Manic street preachers covering this partly.. the 'Oh lord where did the feeling go' James sung it at a gig.
Manics have a song inspired by and in remembrance of Stuart - "3 Ways to See Despair" on Rewind The Film album.
@@de68a amazing song
James Dean Bradfield does the foreward on Stuarts biography, and says Stuart was his biggest inspiration, we have lots to thank Mr Adamson for
As you like Stuart Adamson's guitar sound, please check out Skids, his previous band (he only sang backing vocals there, but the guitar sound is very distinctive). Try The Saints Are Coming, Into The Valley, Circus Games or Working For The Yankee Dollar (their best known songs).
Check. The Storm. Come back to me. Restless Natives
When this album came out in 1983 it was a breath of fresh air to guitar lovers, as at the time synth-pop was somewhat dominant on the airwaves. Iirc, it came out around the same time as U2's "War" album and The Chameleons' "Script of the Bridge," two other records that were guitar-oriented. As a drummer, I'm a great fan of not only Mark's style, but also the drum sound that he and Steve Lillywhite were able to get on those first two albums.
Beautiful song , brilliant album , very cool reaction .
An undeniably talented band. The drummer and bass player have played for Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who. They've also played for The Pretenders and many other notable artists. The guitarist has done similar... and played with the super-group Dead Men Walking (members of The Alarm, Stray Cats, Sex Pistols, The Cult, The Damned, Spear of Destiny). Check out the song "Look Away" by Big Country. Great stuff!
You need to hear it live mate. Best live band from the uk ever
I remember standing in Listen records in Glasgow waiting to buy scared to dance in 79 I was 15, the year before 78 I seen the skids as support to the Stranglers at the Glasgow Apollo.
Great band.
You can't really go far wrong with any big country songs.
Look away is a belter.
Great work as ever mate.
Such a good song and a great band. I saw them play live twice in 1983 and both occasions were celebratory events. Pretty much any song from "The crossing" is well worth listening to but it's the more anthemic ones ("Harvest home", "Fields of fire") that really got the live audiences going.
Great to see Big Country, their version of tracks of my tears is amazing. Live performances were second to none back in the day. Fields of fire is a good upbeat one.. Thanks again
You might like "Just A Shadow" from a later album which has a similar mood. I was learning to play guitar when this album came out and Stuart was my guitar hero, I love his use of the "E-bow" on Chance which was a hand-held device placed on a string to vibrate it indefinitely to gave beautiful long sustained sounds more like a synthesizer than a guitar. BC were better known for upbeat tracks like Fields Of Fire, and Wonderland, but his main demon was alcohol, which might account for some of these melancholy songs. I saw him play live a few times and he often ended the gig with a shout of "Stay Alive", which made his demise all the more tragic, still miss him.
Am so happy to see you listening to BC again, and even happier you loved it. Admit it you're becoming one of us, and no wonder. Oor Stuart was a musical genius.
For such a seemingly sad song, would you believe that this is the crowd party favourite at every gig. Stuart genuinely couldn't sing this whole song live, this was OUR song, WE sang this one.
For further videos I would love to see you go forward in albums. From the next album, Steeltown I have to recommend Where The Rose Is Sown, and the track which includes Stuart's greatest lyric, East of Eden. From the album The Seer, which features Kate Bush on backing vocals, I would say One Great Thing and Eiledon. From Peace in our Time, the title track and River of Hope and Broken Heart (13 Valleys).
😀🏴😀🏴😀
Beautifully put! I've come to really admire BC's work.
Always wondered about the back story to this song.
Yeah this is my favourite by them ‘look away is also another great one’
Listen to The Storm live from The Tube music show, absolutely phenomenal
What a great reaction video. Love your emotion - what a fantastic band Big Country are. I hope that you do reactions for all their songs.
Big Country one of the best Scottish bands ever. Nice video.
Do yourself a favor, and watch the Big Country live from the Barrowlands New Year’s Eve concert. You will see how good this band really is!
Truly heavy pathos in this song.
I said this on another Chance reaction video:
"For me, Chance nailed on what a lyrical master Stuart Adamson was. He could have started it "The rain came down on a cold, new town" ... however "All the rain came down". One simple word "All" conveys the totality, finality and despair. Genius in one word."
Check out the Buffalo Soldier album and the song "seven waves"
Recommending further tracks is slightly tricky, but instead I suggest you listen to the entire first album "The Crossing". It came out when I was in high school around 40 years ago (how is that possible?! I feel so old...) and has been in my top 5 albums ever since. They were a local band for me and a matter of local pride, despite their being Pars fans.
Glad you like them...my brother in law seen them live a few times when they were first touring and always tells me how brilliant they were live in concert.
I saw them live in Edinburgh on December 30th, obv minus Stuart, they played the whole of 'the crossing' album, the end of its 40th anniversary, but Simon was excellent on vocals and with Bruce and Mark (original members) still there driving on their unique sound they were amazing, Steeltown tour is this year and if you can get out and watch them please do, you will love it
oh lord where did the feeling go oh lord i never felt so low so sad
The album this is from The Crossing is just fantastic, if you want to hear a Powerful song listen to “The Storm” from the same album, it’s out of this world.
I have the green colour album, I think there were 3 to choose from
I've owned all three, but green definitely sounded best... 😅@@annesmith2259
I had red, my friend had blue
@@mickr1448 they mentioned it at last year’s concert that the colours are football related Rangers, Celtic, and Aberdeen
Like many here I have seen them live and it would be fair to say that the place was jumping. I never fully got into into Big Country until after Stuart's death. Big Country championed my first true love The Alarm, it was at an Alarm concert that I noticed the band and the fans were upset and thats when I learned of Stuart's death. Lead singer of The Alarm Mike Peters tried out as vocalist of Big Country but he was never fully accepted by the band or the fans. Thanks for reacting to this one. Good one 👍
Thanks Nick. You'd love his first band The Skids. Check out Into The Valley and Yankee Doller.
They never took it out of the set list, they played an acoustic set as well and played it in that section of the concert
The Storm is my favourite from The Crossing.
Here is a great recommendation for you. The Associates ~ Party Fears Two. Absolutely mesmerising stuff. I can't stop listening. They did other great songs but that's their most well known.
Club Country ❤
18carat love affair ❤️
@@scodee Club Country another that I've been listening to a lot. Of their others from what I've heard the standouts include Breakfast and Skipping.
@@SiLatics56 The only one I remember hearing on the radio at the time is Those First Impressions, which I have a peculiar weakness for - but, yes, Breakfast is delightful. Both these songs come from the inconsistent 1984 album (whose other highlights, to my mind, are the ninth and tenth tracks)
2 class songs
Check out Stuart’s previous band
Skids!
Working for the Yankee Dollar is corker.
"Stuart's guitar-playing left me feeling totally inadequate..... everything he did had venom' --The Edge
'He was like a force of nature, the sound of thunder coming over the hills' --James Dean Bradfield
'If there is a player in heaven teaching guitar it will be Stuart Adamson' --Eric Clapton
Damn, I'm glad Stuart got his due. He was so good.
As I said when you did In a Big Country Chance is my favourite. The sorrowful voice full of emotion but layered with the happy sounding guitar.
3.07 to 3.26 pure divinity 😊
I hear you, Nick. Love the early, unpolished voice of Stuart. The band made the stories come to life. The Crossing is gorgeous and would be my favorite album had I not heard Steeltown. Treat yourself to East of Eden or Just a Shadow,
Angle Park
Beautiful people by them is pretty great
I love this song and this band. A lot of times when I listen to this song, I get a bit choked up cause I really miss Stuart Adamson as a part of the melancholy soundtrack to my life just as I miss others who I held close to me like Ian Curtis (Joy Division), John Lever (The Chameleons) and Thierry Sobezyk (Asylum Party) and many more.
These are pepole that have brought so much joy and meaning to my life with their respective bands and music but sadly, they couldn't find the same joy and meaning to their lives, so they took their own lives or, as in the cases of John Lever and Thierry Sobezyk, they were struck down by illness which cut their lives way too soon and way too short.
Here are some other great songs you might want to react to in the future. I hope you enjoy them if you do:
Big Country - _'Just A Shadow'_
Joy Division - _'In A Lonely Place'_
The Chameleons - _'Denims & Curls'_
Asylum Party - _'Better Days Ahead'_
Stuart Adamson, Ian Curtis, John Lever, Thierry Sobezyk R.I.P...
God bless you Stuart.
And finally “a reaction blog” that actually reacts not a step by step breakdown of a tune thank you 🙏
You're welcome!
Always a top 5 album on my lists. Steeltown and The Seer also in my top 100. The Crossing is song for song the absolute. Band can relate to any taste because of his songwriting and delivery... the best musicians of the day buying into a completely unique style. As much as I like the Howard Shore score, think BC would have been perfect for the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. My tastes otherwise Run the Talking Heads , Kate Bush, R.E.M., Throwing Muses, Peter Gabriel, The Pretenders grooves, but heavy metal, folk and prog rock fans can all find their way here, too.
Oh my God, i forgot how much i love this band. Wow, to hear this song again after so many years. Thanks.
Very good review, can I recommend 'Fields of Fire', total opposite to 'Chance' upbeat and positive..love Chance too
Check out Wonderland. It's really upbeat.
Drink it in, man! This is music (and poetry) at its very, very best! We've been loving this for over 40 years...
Class. Check out Look Away, one of their best songs 🎶
Check out their album Buffalo Soldier and the song" seven waves"...,killer album
Inwards or Ships are worth checking out
Need to listen to :
The Teardrop Explodes - Treason
Propaganda - Duel
The Motors - Airport
The Men they Couldn’t Hang - Ironmasters
Prefab Sprout- Appetite
The Blue Nile- Tinseltown in the rain
Every one of their albums was critically approved buy Rolling Stone and various other music sources I have every one of their albums since the beginning and Stuart Adamson was a amazing guitar player and poet.. I could seriously name 20 songs over their various albums that were brilliance
Give fields of fire a listen.
Stay Alive!
If you stick with the Crossing, do Porrohman. It’s epic.
Think you might enjoy the album Dance Music by Mastersystem. I guarantee you will appreciate the bands story and legacy.
Please review, The Icicle Works - Hollow Horse
Shit Creek! Or 2.2.3
React to Fragile thing by Stuart
If you don’t love this song you have no heart and probably like Taylor swift and Ed sheerin (possible wishing you were their child) 🤔🙄😳😂😂Coyp rip stuart
