Big Country's debut album The Crossing remains one of my favourites of all time. Stuart Adamson was brilliant on guitar but the best part of him was his huge heart. I was gutted years later when he succumbed to depression and alcohol by taking his own life. Thankfully the music remains. Thanks, Hari. You have two great ears and a big heart, too.

Firstly, THANK YOU for highlighting my hometown heroes, my idols, and amazingly enough my friends BIG COUNTRY!!!! 😃🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😃 This song is a mainstay of BC's live set, it was IMPOSSIBLE for them to play a gig anywhere without playing this song. Stuart barely sang a word of it live after this though, this was OUR song. I have tears in my eyes remembering singing this at so many gigs like the unbeatable Glasgow Barrowlands or at home in Dunfermline. I know (cuz he told me) that Stuart was so caught up in us singing in the Barrowlands that he forgot his place to come back in and sing the ending and looked down to ME in the front row to get it back, telling me he knew at least I would be singing it right!!! Stuart truly was a unique and gifted songwriter and a lovely, friendly humble guy. Oh, and OF COURSE WE HAVE BLACK PEOPLE IN SCOTLAND lol just not Tony Butler, he and drummer Mark Brzezicki are actually English, from London. Stuart and Bruce Watson are the ones from Dunfermline, though they weren't actually born here, just brought up here from a very young age. Thank you again and Greetings fae Bonnie Scotland 🖤🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🤍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

None of them are from Scotland. Stuart is from Manchester. Bruce is from Timmins Ontario, Mark is English/Polish, and Tony is English. Dominican.

I was lucky to see Big Country twice - Reading festival 1983 and Heineken festival Leeds 1995. Both times absolutely superb, especially the Leeds gig where their encore ended up them repeating practically the whole gig. One of the most memorable live performances I’ve ever seen and the band thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Magical! Very sad to hear of Stuart’s passing a few years later.

You probably know by now that Tony Butler (bass) and Mark Brzezicki (drums) are Englishman. They were a hot in demand rhythm section doing a lot of session work when they hooked up with Stuart and Bruce . those 2 are Scotsman by way of England and Canada , respectively.

I've been lucky enough to see some epic bands play live in my time, including such legends as Pink Floyd who were above and beyond. But one of my fondest memories were of seeing Big Country not once but several times, brilliant tight live band full of energy. Stuart sadly missed, check out Kirsten Adamson, she has her fathers talent.

Was I there in that crowd? I wish!
No, when Big Country appeared on the scene, I was in high school in a small town in Kansas, USA. If they ever played near us (Tulsa, Wichita, or even Kansas City, although that would have been quite a jaunt), I never knew about it.
I still love them to this day. Many of their lyrics are quite a bit less cheerful than the music, which I suppose is fitting given the tragic end Stuart Adamson met. (Incidentally, he co-wrote "The Saints Are Coming" while in an earlier band, The Skids. U2 and Green Day joined forces for a nice cover of it.)
Tony Butler is an amazing bassist.

I too remember them from the time and remember buying "the crossing" when it came out, I was 12! - Still great in that big anthemic type 80's way. - the weird thing about Big country is that none of them were actually born in Scotland!

Loved your reaction to a great song. I would love to see your reaction to a lesser known song by the band called Winter Sky. It was a B side but it shows just how great a song writer Stuart Adamson was. God he pulls my heart in a song like no other ever has.
