Major Bludd was one of the children who always held his arm out the window of the school bus, despite many well intended warnings.
When Major Bludd came out, I got one at Montgomery Ward’s along with Destro I believe.
I liked playing army and going to the surplus store, but there were concepts I didn’t understand at the time, such as dog tags. So, I remember looking at the patch of white on his chest and thinking it reminded me of a priest collar, so I pretended Bludd was also a priest and the chaplain for Cobra.
I remember reading the comic of the IDW G.I. Joe Hearts and Minds based on the Max Brooks book. There is a short interesting anthology like story which gave us a more nuanced look on Major Sebastian Bludd in regard to his character it even shows he has a wife and two children I thought that was something that should be considered part of Bludd's character.
In the "Battle Action Force" Comic in the UK in the mid 1980's there was a background story dedicated to Major Blud. The story shows him serving in the French Foreign Legion and tells how he joined Cobra. Action Force was the UK equivalent of G.I.Joe which shared some characters. Action Force fighting Cobra was shown in the "Battle Action Force" Comics.
The patch on Major Bludd's sleeve matches to one you showed for the Australian Special Forces
I always liked his voice on the cartoon.
Always liked Bludd, he just looked so unique, and like he'd been through hell. You mentioned his rocket pistol as an unconventional weapon. Maybe that's how he originally blew his arm off, fiddling with experimental weapons. Always thought it was interesting the cartoon and comics showed his right arm being more encased in armor with five fully working fingers, also liked how his 25th Anniversary figure retained his three fingered "claw" like hand, plus neat removable....and insanely easy to lose rockets for his pistol. Good review!
I think that if you had Major Bludd and Gung ho during the 83-84 era you were a lucky kid.
Holy shit! I literally just commented this!!
major bludd is one of my all time favs!
The strips on the lower part of the uniform indicate years of service. Each strip represents a certain amount of years I think each one was four years I don't remember for sure.
Best review of Major Bludd figure I’ve seen. Thanks for putting in that kind of effort!
Fantastic figure. Agreed 100%. Love him.
I know I'm commenting on years old videos, but I'm new here...I'm guessing at least half your audience didn't catch the "Hitchhiker's Guide" reference at 13:15. I caught it, though, so your semi-obscure reference was worth it. ;)
I was today years old when I learned that Major Bludd's right arm lacked the kung-fu grip.
Most stand alone Cobra figures were "independent contractors".
This fis one of my favorite Cobra figures. Some of the later versions do this one justice but most do not.
Thor13332 I've only seen the later versions on Yojoe. I don't have any of them. But eventually I will get to everything in the vintage line, so I'll see how they stack up!
Hcc788: you mentioned that this character would have to look directly down the rear end of his rocket pistol to aim it. Do you think that the fact he wears an eye patch is supposed to be something of a nod to the possibility that he burned his eye out?
great review, I always loved major bludd. also the green stripes on forearm most likely represent what's known as service stripes or hash marks for example in the marine corps each stripe represents four years of service.
Oh my goodness...😮😮😮 Rocket launcher back fire blast to the face🔥 OUCH❗❗❗
Major Bludd is wearing a brown jumpsuit. The Order of Battle confirms it. No buttons, no zipper, no belt or belt loops...jumpsuit. the tall black shiny boots scream Nazi.
The aboriginal accent you associate with Paul Hogan is more like the bayou French accent in Louisianna, where Major Bludd, who more than likely came from money, grew up in Sidney, far from the aboriginal people. Major Bludd sounds more British because the Brits controlled Australia and used it as a penal colony.
His right arm, possibly removed over betrayal, because he was trusted as some dictator's or fascist's trusted advisor, their right arm man if you will. I remember reading his arm is robotic. Hasbro could not use the term "bionic" as it belonged to Kenner with the Six Million Dollar Man license.
Great review. I always viewed Major Bludd as the Baroness' loyal puppy. He is the guy from Last American Virgin who loves Diane Franklin, but even after his friend dumps her, he rescues her, blows a wad of cash on her, she still winds up back with his best friend!
Gonna go out on a limb here and say that patch on his arm is based on (or even supposed to be) the SASR patch. Switch out the wings for lightning bolts and remove the scroll, and it's pretty close to a dead ringer.
Not my favorite of the main Cobra villains but an essential figure none the less. Nice job yet again Bryan, really looking forward to who you bring out in week 3 and 4.
Chris Michalec Thank you! Next week will be special.
I think the insignia on the left forearm are 3 hash marks for5 years of service each. Great review of one of my all time faves!
that rocket launcher probably burned his eye out ....and the arm got burned off first time he used it ...hahahahhaaa... awesome figure though
Nobody said he was the sharpest knife in the drawer. ;)
HoodedCobraCommander788 for sure I didn't know that was a robot arm ...I always thought his arm was armor plated
There's a spelling mistake - it's actually Sydney!
Very good review of Mercenary Major Bludd, very cool action figure.
Love the knife!
As well as the Super Sonic Fighters version (with dark blue and yellow uniform), I do like *this* version of Major Bludd (obviously these are the *only two* versions of him I like).
My favorite villain! He’s got an awesome name a gnarly eyepatch a robotic arm 🦾 he’s just a all around bad ass!!!…..basically the boba fett of the gi joe world
I've always had a mixed view of Major Bludd. While he was part of the Cobra in the comic and cartoon the figure seems to act alone. It never States Bludd was actually affiliated with Cobra in his file card. Perhaps this was the idea to have the Joe team fight a variety of terrorists AKA "bad guys" including Cobra. Hasbro decided to put them all under Cobra later on. You could say Destro also acted alone as his file card states he sold arms to whomever wanted to buy. For me Major Bludd is a mercenary for the highest bidder but acts alone if the job suits him. He doesn't mind taking command of a squad of vipers as long as he is the one giving the orders.
I wish I still had my original. I do have 25th Anniversary one.
Cool figure. Definitely missing seeing a belt on it. Any other figures without belts in the line at all? If I had this figure as a kid, I probably would have just set it aside because of the robot arm not moving. However, as soon as the B.A.T.S came out, I probably would have begged for an extra one to swap arms with him to add to his interest factor! They showed him in the commercial piloting a F.A.N.G. copter. Why then, I wonder aloud, didn't they add him as a pilot for it? They could have gotten more for the copter, and kids would have gotten a figure with it too. Thanks for sharing your videos with us!
Spirit didn't have a belt. I think Dodger from BF2000 didn't have a belt. That's all I can think of right now.
Awesome review!!
I have the 25th Anniversary one sitting on a The Corps helicopter right now.
I love the bits of trivia that you share. What is your reference?
And we finally know how he lost his eye, aiming the rocket gun.
Sydney, Australia is misspelled “Sidney” on the file card.
Great Review!!!!
Rocket the Racoon needed the eye....unlike Spider-Man being in Transformers #3, Rocket was not seen in the pages, and it happened before his appearance. The arm...not sure why rocket did not take it.
Major Blood wrote Poems in Prison its a comon place to write poetry hes got a UK accident he reminds me of a nazzi
Huh. I see Bludd's right arm as being armored to protect it from his rocket launcher, not as a cybernetic.
(The real reason his arm looks like that of course is that he was the first swivel arm figure and they kept costs down by increasing the articulation in one arm and decreasing it in the other, but at least they worked that into the aesthetic.)
His arm's robotic.
The rocket gun might explain the robotic prosthetic arm
I was just thinking the very same thing. Even if he held it at waist height the back blast would be enough to knock off his arm.
My 2nd favorite figure to FireFly
Of course he wouldn't carry his silly gun. He was the on the field leader in my world and would also fly the FANG. I gave him Snake eyes v2 uzi
one of the better villains - before the freakshow started
that's a robot arm!? All of these years I thought is arm was like that because he was paralyzed (like Dr. Stranglove)
i got him when i was 3 years old
Is Bludd like the only cobra member who's name isn't classified?
Major Bludd's patch looks a bit like the one for US Army Battlefield Surveillance.
Dude, his robot arm allows him to wield the pistol rocket launcher, mon’ brah
Yeah, but what would have been really funny would have been if his eye-patch was on the same side as his robot arm. It'd have been like a GI Joe safety PSA.
Paul Walsh and knowing is half the battle!
I always thought the dog tags weren't trophies from kills but tags from the times he was in different military organizations. meaning they are all his.
+phillip powers Could be.
phillip powers well, That's no fun! Nothing says what a good mercenary you are like wearing your resume around your neck for everyone to see!
The 1/6 figure from Sideshow includes bloodied dog tags.
Sidney? Its Sydney! Australia gets little respect when it comes to GI Joe. Sure we get Bludd and some Dreadnoks but the only Joe is Skymate. Recondo should have been Aussie due to his likeness to the Diggers, in fact Digger was a character created in Recondo's likeness for the Australian comic. Anyway, great review mate.
+Tim Roper Oh, you're right! The misspelling of Sydney should be added to the list of typos in the file cards, and I didn't catch it! I think Recondo was inspired by the old 1960s Australian Jungle Fighter 12 inch figure. From what I've been told by 12 inch collectors, it was a popular figure. Digger only existed in the comic book? There was no figure?
Tim Roper what about Outback?
Heard Larry Hama had a grudge against Australians, which might explain why a lot of bad guys are from Australia.
'SAS' is a British unit. I think Australia has it's own version though. A bit like the UK has 'RAF' and Australia has 'RAAF'.
Well, guess we know what happened to his eye.
Major Bludd lost his left eye the first time he fired his rocket pistol.
Might of been intended for a robotic arm, but what of the later release of Major Bludd with 2 regular arms? Also did anyone ever get the Inspector Kemp of Young Frankenstein influence on the character? Right hardly movable arm, eye patch, etc?
Ever thought of reviewing the Sideshow G.I. Joe figures, or would the answers regarding quality be too obvious? I've just been looking at their Major Bludd and it's even got a removable eyepatch with damaged eye underneath, and he's also wearing what looks like miniature metal dog tags!
BTW: You questioned whether his right arm is false or not, and I can 100% confidently tell you that it's robotic, because the Sideshow figure makes it absolutely clear by its detail.
Hey, do you think an Black Hawk Down/Harry Potter actor Jason Isaacs should be in G.I. Joe movie if he could be casting as Major Bludd?
another top tier figure..but on the low end of that list. Normally i would take points off cuz nothing "jumps" out at you..dark colors which are sensible and logical, but don't pop...just OK accessories, but no long rifles or sword/knife...what he lacked he made up for conveying that sense of evilness w/o resorting to some level of goofness. Major Bludd just looks like he is down for a fight! i will always associate him with the cobra fangs for whatever reason (maybe the cartoon?) and he is the premier de facto pilot of that vehicle in my book. Really should have come packaged with the vehicle or a custom/delux version of that copter should have been issued with him as its pilot.
looks like he took Darth Vaders arm in the choke position :)
I got him for my b day
The governor from the Walking Dead Ripped major Budd off
As a kid I swore that Major Bludd's arm was recycled Darth Vader arms from Kenner.
Rocket launcher pistols are how people lose eyes.
and arms...
... and now you know. And knowing is half the battle.
Argh! Black on tan, bucket helmet, lame rocket gun... no way he’s in the top tier! Great review though!
