    Here in Brazil we have private universities, which are paid, and public universities, which are free. Private universities can have quite different prices, but the good ones are considerably expensive. The public universities, on the other hand, are completely free. And the federal public universities are usually the best ones. There are exceptions like USP, which is owned by a state and is the best university of the country. In order to study in any university in Brazil, you must pass on an exam called vestibular. And each university has its own vestibular and sometimes focuses on some specific subjects more than on others. But most public universities now use a single national vestibular, called ENEM. We choose the area of our graduation before starting college, and the vestibular exam can be different according to the graduation you chose (although ENEM is the same for everyone). We don't have a major/minor system. You choose a graduation area, pass the vestibular, study it for 4, 5 or 6 years (depends on graduation area) and then you're graduated on that area only.

      It is not free. You pay taxes.

    • @dorumagaxs
      @dorumagaxs 6 років тому

      Yes, you obviously pay it through taxes. But you're paying taxes anyway, so studying in a public university is not generating you a new spending.

      There are some universities that has a different system than the usual in Brazil, for example UFABC and UNIFESP. You get a degree in what they call BCT (bachelor degree in science and technology) wich lasts 3 years and it's interdisciplinary. So you can have another degree after doing this BCT. For example: i'm getting a degree in BCT and after that i'll get a degree in engineering.
      We have some kind of federal help in programs such as FIES and PROUNI but they're not large like in USA.

      +Tecnic life yes, the best brazilian university according to the Center of World Universities Ranking. It used to be the best in all rankings, but it dropped some positions in the last few years indeed. It is now the second best according to Timer Higher Education ranking and third one according to Ranking Universitário Folha.

    holly, no brasil há muitas universidades públicas, mas passar no vestibular é realmente muito competitivo, principalmente se você quer medicina como eu, pois é 1 vaga para cada 250 pessoas.
    Além disso, também existem as particulares que tem um preço bem caro, mas existem bolsas integrais quando você estuda em colégio público, como também da para financiar o curso como nos eua, e você paga depois de formado.

    in Brazil, some students when they take a test, which they call entry test (here you have it in 95% of universities) you earn a %, it can be 1% up to 100%, and you do NOT need to return that money, they do not but if you get a 100% purse (here's called a purse) you pay nothing, nor the books, nothing's all free, BUT if you go bad on the notes it cuts everything, and you get 0% and you have to pay for everything, and it depends on the% you take, it stays until the end of the course, it does not matter if it is 1 year, or 15 years, it stays until the end it does not change

    I used to go to UFC (Ceará Federal University), there we do not stay in the same class all the classes, I studied physics and I had classes at physics departament, some at math's, some at chemistry's.
    Yes, not all of us live in dorms at the college but some colleges, like mine, have dorms, a friend of mine stay in the dorms trough the weak but at hollidays and weakend he get back to his house in a city close to the college.
    Well, about the party thing, we have a lot of parties, almost every friday one different course make a party, some are huge, but most are small with about 20 or 30 friends hanging out, drinking and listen some songs.
    About the names you call someone like junior or senior, here in my city (Fortaleza) we just say that if you just get in the college you are a "bixo", "bixa", or "bixete", and if not you're just a "veterano".
    Minor and Major are like the "optativas" and "obrigatorias", I was studying to be a physics teacher and mine "obrigatorias" (like required) are all about math, physics, psychology of adolescence and how to teach, and the "opicionais" (like optional) was like "The Use Of Thech To Teach", or "History of Math", still, all the courses demand you to do all the required and a some optional classes.

    Ok, you asked. Public Universities are really huge in Brazil, there are a lot of Campi and they receive a lot of investment from the Government, specially in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, which are the most populated areas in Brazil, but there are a lot of great Universities in other States as well. Also, in some States, there are more than one big and conceited public University. They have dorms and the students are the ones that change classrooms, not the teachers (at least in my University and in my girlfriend's it is; UFRJ and URCA). Actually, the classrooms are more like a meeting place, the teacher doesn't "own" the classroom and often it is shared by a lot of teachers. The private ones can be good, but mostly it serves more to form professionals to work, not necessarily to research and keep the knowledge going, it's more like, "hey, I got a degree, let me work!" kind of thing. But don't get me wrong, there are some monster private Colleges that are amazing and also invest in research, but they're very rare or are property of the Catholic Church... so, yeah... money...
    That's basically the main difference between public Universities and private Colleges here in Brazil: The first are really focused in research and in increasing the number of academics in it, they really motivate the students to persue an academic life and strive for the doctorate. That's why they are filled with amazing Professors, which increase the quality of their teachings; the second ones, the private Colleges focus more on forming graduated professionals to simply work in an especific area, they rarely have postgraduate programs, so if a person were to try and persue an academic career after graduating in a private College, he/she would have to search for a public University that would accept them and their thesis, which is very difficult, since they tend to favor their own graduates, you know, keep things home and such.
    Anyway, that was just a very simplistic view of college/University education here in Brazil. I'm sorry if I displeased someone with my explanation, since I know this can be a very touchy subject here in Brazil, specially for private students, who tend to defend the argument that they are as prepared as public students and I'm not denying it in the least. There are really great professionals that graduated in a private education, and that's no shame whatsoever.

    In Portugal, education is pretty much free until University. Well, you have to pay for class books which can reach up to 100-200$/year (assuming 1 dollar=1 euro). When you reach University you have 2 paths - Public or Private universities. Private is much easier to get into but costs a lot, around 300$/month. Which can total 9000$ for a course. Public is harder to get in but they cost way less, around 1000$/year. Totaling 3000$ for a course. In one you pay per month in the other you pay per year (it's stupid I know). Also one thing is that people who go with private have less "credibility" than public ones... Because in the private ones your grades don't need to be that high to pass. And btw a house here costs 100 000$! It's an insane amount to owe to a bank #hellneverends We have freshman parties that last 2 weeks... But there's parties all the time except during exams. It's pretty much partying and studying xD

  • @lalalabizola
    @lalalabizola 5 років тому

    In Brazil people don't have as much freedom to study what they really want. In High School it doesn't matter if the student wants to focus on sciences or humanities, they have to take the same subjects as everyone else. Then, in college, they're supposed to choose a specific course and go through with it for 5 or 4 years. If they don't like the course that they chose they have to quit college and apply for another exam, basically just repeat the whole process again (wasting lots of money and time!). It's not uncommon for people here to waste years of their lives studying things and then get nothing out of it. So you're either lucky to find something you really like at the first try or you're fortunate ($$$) enough to keep trying other things. This concept of "major" and "minor' would be really good to have here in Brazil.
