    The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (Latin: Pauperes commilitones Christi Templique Salomonici), also known as the Order of Solomon's Temple, the Knights Templar or simply as Templars, were a Catholic military order recognised in 1139 by papal bull Omne Datum Optimum of the Holy See.[4] The order was founded in 1119 and active from about 1129 to 1312.[5]
    The order, which was among the wealthiest and most powerful, became a favoured charity throughout Christendom and grew rapidly in membership and power. They were prominent in Christian finance. Templar knights, in their distinctive white mantles with a red cross, were among the most skilled fighting units of the Crusades.[6] Non-combatant members of the order, who formed as much as 90% of the order's members,[2][3] managed a large economic infrastructure throughout Christendom,[7] developing innovative financial techniques that were an early form of banking, building its own network of nearly 1,000 commanderies and fortifications across Europe and the Holy Land, and arguably forming the world's first multinational corporation.

    So templars were doing their absolute best to root out sin from their lives, doing harsh penances, and here I am, struggling to quit porn and masturbation, the biggest spiritual battle of my life.

    Great podcast! Adding one implication to being absent overnight without permission: This was a military organization. In addition to every other thing stated, this was equivelant to being AWOL (UA) in modern military regulations

    In Bodrum (Halicarnassus), Turkey is the Fortress St. Peter and Paul of the Knights of St. John.
    Of particular interest in context to your video is a dungeon.
    There they locked away members of the Order who committed minor offenses.
    As a rule of thumb a prisoner would not survive the conditions more than 3 months. The heat in there is already unbearable.
    The Templars were equally strict with offenders.
    Thank you very much for your hard work on this subject 11:29 . 👍🏻💯

    In order to understand and appreciate the life of a Knights Tenplar, you need to have a more than basic understanding of Catholicism. It was a wholly Catholic world back then, even the most common, lukewarm person had as much faith and dedication to tradition than the most traditional Catholics today. Monastic life was how large portions of the population lived, and yes one community of monks were also warriors, the Knights Templar.
    What were the Knights Tenplar spiritual obligations? Daily mass, rosary, liturgy of the hours?

    To your example around the 26 minute mark of the Templar who threw his mace at a bird, it was forbidden for Templar Knights to hunt for sport.

    • @jurisprudens

      They gave a solemn vow, a vow was to be fulfilled. The bishop could substitute the vow for an equivalent or stronger obligation - hence why it was allowed to join stricter monasteries.

    You mentioned fallen Templars being sentenced to life imprisonment. Are there any examples of fallen Templars being executed?

    • @jurisprudens
      @jurisprudens 3 роки тому +1

      Probably not by the orders themselves, because the ecclesiastical courts were not allowed to issue death sentences. Theoretically, they could give up a grave offender to the secular arm of the king of Jerusalem, who could then condemn him to death.

    It must have been tough to keep proud young men in check, in an enclosed order there is less chance for temptation and more recourse for support. From what I understand they were Benedictine but so different from other Benedictines!
