    I learned a lot from your very instructive microphone reviews. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
    This review made me try the Sennheiser e 965 myself. I found the difference in sound between cardoid and supercardoid quite noticeable. It depended on the headphones which pattern I preferred. It surprised me that it felt as if I had to overcome a resistance in the microphone. In other words singing required quite some effort. To me the e 965 was not very fast, more like a dynamic microphone, maybe because the diaphragm is quite large. With an Electro-Voice RE520 I had the same feeling of resistance. In contrast, for me the Audio-Technica AE3300 is very fast, has a nice round bass with lots of detail, does not give me this resistance and singing feels effortless. It has a large dynamic range, more than the e 965. The AE3300 puts a smile on my face and makes me experiment with my voice.
    PS: The e 965 I tested did not have a hum.

    Sennheiser e945 (my first mic)
    Shure BETA 87A
    Sennheiser e965
    Telefunken M80 Oak Wood
    I have to say I like Shure the least. I'm a male tenor, I focus on pop songs and I am going to say Sennheiser's crystal clear clarity really makes my voice shines even more! M80 is purely beautiful with the natural oak wood handle. M80 sounds very very clean and neutral.
    e965 is impeccable. That detail, and it's slightly warmer than e945. However, perhaps I'm not good with mixer, I don't really get the chance to use e965 on the stage because of the feedback (humming).

    Firstly thanks for the videos. A refreshing change from the normal clichés!
    The e965 internal HPF might be a bit much, you are losing a bit of body. Probably fine for female vocals but not your good self.
    I also noticed the 100Hz hum, which I discovered when looking at downloaded audio (I had some stubborn playback issues under YT and downloaded the MP4, which is fine be assured). My guess is it's not a cable as that would be 50Hz; or desk which is fine with the Rode; but AC ripple on the +48V coupling inside the mic, probably the internal preamp.
    It sounds fine with the basket. As a condensor the off-axis pattern will hold up well so a high shelf wouldn't be picking up mushy spill (unlike the 58), should you feel the need.

    Anton, did Sennheiser ever get back to you about the hum? i bought one of these mics and had to return it. The mic was completely unusable due to that hum when plugged into my XVive U3c wireless transmitter. i haven't encountered this noise using the XVive with any other mic except this one.

      No, they didn't get back and thanks for reminding me. I have another two mics (condensers) which seem noisy, so I'll do a video on them to see whether people think they're acceptable or not. I can then send the video to the companies and see if I can get them fixed/replaced without charge, as they are hardly used.

    Excellent review Sir
    Quick newbie question, how can I connect e965 to Sony camcorder Which has TRS 3.5mm mic jack, I was told this needs some amplification device before it can be connected(since it does not have enough ‘gain’/power ), I looking for simple, not any expensive solution, please comment

    • @AntonBrowne
      @AntonBrowne  2 роки тому

      The e965 is a condenser mic (very good) and requires a phantom power supply to operate. Most desks have this but you can buy just a supply such as this: www.gear4music.com/Recording-and-Computers/SubZero-Phantom-Power-Supply/1RLW you will then need and XLR to mini jack cable to go into your camcorder. Depending on what you're doing, you may be better off - less fuss, cables and no need for nearby mains power - with this, or similar. www.gear4music.com/PA-DJ-and-Lighting/Rode-VideoMic-R-Shotgun-Condenser-Microphone-with-Rycote-Suspension/SE1

    • @AntonBrowne
      @AntonBrowne  5 років тому +1

      Hi, thanks for your comment. Sennheiser kind of dwindled on that front, sadly. I notice their lesser 865 has a similar issue so maybe it's a 'characteristic'. Having said that, I don't notice the hum unless I'm listening for it on headphones so really, don't worry about it. It is a lovely old/new school top quality mic and a student has bought one despite the cost.

    • @WalterDavidRiffmon

      Thanks very much for your reply. I continue to weigh between the E965 and the AE5400. Your comment regarding the non consequence of the low level hum is helpful. I suppose it might matter a little more if the E965 were to be used for recording vs live which is what I’ll be using it for.

    I'd like to share my experiences with the e965 mic and hopefully someone out there could suggest me what I need to do to improve its sound quality on the mic. On the Mackie profx8v2, I set the U-Gain up to 4 o'clock at about 48+ almost hit to the max along with the volume fader up to 10dB or more, phantom power 48v enabled... but the mic doesn't pick up much sound as I expected ??? I also tried it on the different audio mixer profx8v3 but still it behaviors the same. The 10dB gain switch of the mic does not seem to support much ???
    Thank You!

    • @gmichaelhall
      @gmichaelhall 3 роки тому +1

      Couple of things here, firstly not all phantom power is created equally. It's possible that the 48v on your mixer is an issue.
      Ideally you want the input signal hitting somewhere up in the vicinity of - 12db for a lead vocal with your mix fader sitting at 0. From there you may need to pull it back a bit or push it up a tiny bit depending on the program material you're working with.
      My 965 usually only needs between 19-23 dB of input gain.
      Back to the phantom power though, on budget mixers the on board phantom power can vary greatly, there aren't many that can supply enough power to multiple channels using phantom power. An external phantom power with cleaner and more available power will solve this, they aren't expensive but they can be.
      My first suspect would be the mixer phantom power, less likely it's the microphone.
      The last thing you want to check is that the cable you use is of a decent quality. Cost effective cables can be fine for alot of jobs but some are also less able to handle the demands of a phantom powered device.
      On the mic, check that your - 10db pad is disengaged, you'll find it by unscrewing the mic capsule head
      Best of luck with it mate
      ✌️🎶🎶

      @taitruong3903 3 роки тому +1

      @@gmichaelhall
      Thank You Michael for your reply! I really appreciate it.
      Definitely I can try the external phantom power. The weird part is the mic is acting the same characteristics on all 4 different mixers! Profx16v2 profx8v2 profx10v3 and the Behringer. The -10dB pad was switched on but did not improve a bit.
      In your review, did you use the external phantom power or the built in?
      Hopefully it’s not the issue with the mic.
      Best!

    • @gmichaelhall
      @gmichaelhall 3 роки тому

      The - 10db cut should only be engaged if close to or micing extremely loud sources, probably not necessary for and spoken or most singing styles.
      I use a different mixer for live, the mackie stuff is very different from my own, it's not gear I would use.
      I can first hand recommend the Radial Engineering StageBug phantom power supply. But first, take your mic to a pro audio store and ask if you can test it thru different set-ups. Sorry you're having difficulties with your setup, it can be very frustrating!

    Bonjour Anton Je suis de France , je viens de découvrir votre chaîne , votre travail est merveilleux ! Pouvez-vous m’aider dans le choix d’un micro condensateur ? J’ai une vois très androgyne, très ressemblante à Michael Jackson , même tessiture et timbre vocale ( ça parait prétentieux mais pourtant c’est la vérité même si MJ reste inégalable) . Je travail actuellement avec un e945 que je trouve très bien mais je me demandais si un e965 ou un beta 87a apporterai un peu plus de magie ? Est-ce qu’il seraient adapté à une voix aigu comme la mienne ? Quel est la différence entre ces deux là ? Aurais je plus deLarsen qu’avec mon e945 ? C’est un sacré investissement et j’ai peur de faire erreur sur mes orientations . En tout cas vous si vous aviez ce type de voix que prendriez vous pour vous même ? Dernière chose , bon dieu que vous chanter bien !!! Un grand merci 🙏

      Bonjour, merci pour votre commentaire. D'après ce que vous dites, je commencerais par essayer le Neumann KMS 105 - cher mais assez courant, donc un magasin peut en avoir un à essayer. Vous pouvez regarder le Earthworks SR314 - encore plus cher et pas si commun, donc peut-être difficile à essayer... aussi, si vous produisez beaucoup de pops/plosives, cela peut être délicat. Il y a tellement, tellement, tellement de micros, je dirais qu'il faut essayer avant d'acheter si possible. J'ai un problème similaire en sélectionnant de nouveaux haut-parleurs pour mon ampli de guitare en ce moment. Une sélection déconcertante et je n'ai aucune idée de la façon dont ils sonneront dans mon ampli particulier. C'est pire que les micros car je dois les monter, ce qui prend du temps et... marque la finition/surface, donc je ne peux pas les renvoyer ! Bonne chance monsieur.
