Probably the best mic review ever. I'm convinced the 40 is a fantastic mic.

My friend bought one of these on my recommendation. As we continue to use it to record vocals for his music, I continue to be stunned by the performance of this mic.

After I sent this video to a friend of mine he bought one of these mics. He finally brought it over for me to record him with. I set him up the way he would do a live acoustic gig. The SR40V was about a foot above his guitar and aimed up a bit towards his mouth. The rejection of the guitar in the vocal track was amazing. There was just a small amount of his Taylor that got into the vocal track, and nowhere near enough to cause a problem. The sound of his voice in the recording was amazing. We recorded him in my untreated living room, and I could have easily used what that mic was feeding into my Apollo Twin in a final mix, and it would have sounded great. Honestly, I was amazed by how good, clean, and detailed the signal was. One other thing. Mr. Browne is exactly right when he says this mic gives you no mascara. I was sitting a few feet away from my friend when we recorded and the Earthworks SR40V provided an audio signal for my system to record that reproduced exactly what I heard when I played it back. Again, amazing. One word of warning. If you have a singing voice like I do, this mic might frustrate you because it will allow you to hear exactly what you sound like. In my case that is not so good, however, it will absolutely show you when you are singing something that sounds good and when you are not. The first step to becoming a better singer is to learn what you are doing wrong. Oh, also, I just would like to disagree with Mr. Browne about the case. If I were to spend a grand on this vocal mic, I would be very happy to have a strong padded travel case for my mic. The case that is provided with this mic is a VERY smart idea for anyone who would get this mic to take on the road. Anyway, if you are interested in having the best mic for getting your real voice into a sound system or a recording, I simply do not know of a better choice you could make that will do both jobs as well as this mic.

Fire Side Studios Is this a better mic than the KMS 105?

    • @frontprochproduction
      @frontprochproduction 5 років тому +4

Jonathan Gilmour, in my opinion, yes it is. Don't get me wrong, the KMS 105 is a STUNNING mic. I was the second tech running FOH sound for a local venue one evening when Joan Osborne performed. She is a GREAT singer and she used one of those mics. It sounded incredible. However, Anton Brown is exactly right when he says the 105 has a slight boost higher up in the vocal frequencies. That is not a bad thing, but I prefer the almost flat frequency response of the SR40V. Simply put, what goes into the mic is exactly what comes out in your PA or in your recording. That is the BEST thing for a live mix or a mix down of a recorded song. Also, the clarity of the mic is simply amazing. Small condenser mics have been used in studios for decades to record things like acoustic instruments and as drum overheads because of their ability to record with such clarity, but this mic just seems to take that to another level. Here is a link to a video I made. I don't know if youtube will let me leave this in, but I haven't monetized the video because it is only for information and training purposes for anyone who wants to watch it. The first part is a video a group did that demos this mic. The mix is very vocal heavy because she is using the mic, (they used different mics for the acoustic guitar). The second part of the video is audio of what I was able to do to remaster the original audio from the video to make is sound more like a produced piece of music. My video gives you a good A/B comparison of what this mic gives you for raw source signal, and one example of how you might mix that sound. I also added a virtual violin to the mix, please pardon the simplicity of that, I'm just a retired drummer who has no knowledge of musical theory. I only added that as an experiment and for fun. Here is the link if you would like to watch, I hope I answered your question to your satisfaction. Have a great day Sir.

@@frontprochproduction I have a Heil Pr 35 and find the high frequencies pretty rolled off. I'm sort of interested in this mice but I was wondering if it can be used on a guitar cab for metal as well? I like the flat frequency concepts of having what I hear translate through the mic and speakers.
I am trying to be better at singing and your idea on knowing exactly how you sound would be pretty beneficial to knowing where your sound bad so you can fix it.

@@torchlord11 This mic has a max SPL of 145, so, I'm guessing it could handle mic'ing a loud guitar cab. My only comment would be that because it is a hypercard, it has the effect that as you get the sound source closer to the mic you get added bass in the signal. The SR40V keeps that added bass sound nice and clean, but it is there. This is nice for vocals because you can control the "bassiness" of your voice as long as you have a really good set of in ear monitors that are giving you an accurate idea of what you are doing. My friend, (who is a real singer which I am not), says he thinks of his SR40V as just another instrument he can use. Now that he knows how it responds he can be close to the mic or farther away or sing differently depending on what he wants his voice to sound like, and the mic helps him to get the sound he is looking for. The only other thing I would warn you about would be using this mic on an overly loud stage. While it is a hypercard and has excellent rejection of surrounding sounds, it is also a very high output mic. I have found it to be the best mic I have ever used for recording vocals, and if you have the right stage, it is stunning when used for live performances. I don't know if UA-cam will let me put this link up, but if they do, this link is a video of clips from a friends party. I recorded all the performances using my SR40V. If you skip to 2:53 of the video you can see my friend who owns his own mic performing a song.

Fantastic review! I just discovered this microphone, and after watching this review I’m sold. We’ve been using the Shure SM58’s and the SR40V will be a phenomenal upgrade. Thanks for putting so much effort into showing the pros and cons of this mic!

I've used this mic live in rock n roll. I find it is a superb instrument. However, on the louder stages, I found that I had to eq out most of what makes this mic unique. It's low-frequency response. Got a lot of 200 Hz hum/noise out of it from stage volumes. However, on the quieter [in ear monitor] stages, I was able to use most of the freq response without issue. So there ya go. You never get something for nothing.

You probably don't have things gain staged probably if you have so much hum and noise. I have a x32 rack and the expander is key for keeping my gain so that it is super low when you don't actually sing. Expanders boost when you sing when you get over a threshold parameter. I use the x32 app to set the gain so it only picks up sound when you are about 8-10 inches from the mic and then boost it.

Many thanks for your outstanding reviews! If there's one thing I have against the SR40V it's the noise floor. Not an issue or a deal breaker when the mic is used as intended, but given the price I think Earthworks could have scrunched the numbers some. Thanks again!

OK... sounds fantastic. clean, precise... superb low frequency, even though it might make it a bit of a handful for the uninitiated! And the only word for the top end is smooth and uncoloured (the only TWO words....) What a microphone! But what a price!

I would love to see you compare it to the new Earthworks SR117. I have reached out to Earthworks to see if the SR40V has been discontinued and they said it had and the the SR117 is the best live performance mic they have ever offered. I would love to see what you think.

re the mesh, interested to know if they could have used a sintered metal screen, as used by Aston mids on their Starlight pencil condensers.

Thank you for the great service you are providing for us. Is it possible that you compare earthworks with TELEFUNKEN m80? I have the impression that they are very similar but with a big price difference. Thank you again.

Focusrite Scarlett 3rd Gen, or Mackie ProFX8 mixer with USB, depending. With earlier reviews it was a small but good quality Mackie mixer (which I still have and it's very good - in many ways better than the new one) into an Edirol interface.

@@AntonBrowne I feel your old videos have more depth to it. Maybe that is the 2nd gen of the mackie, the 3rd gen I found a bit too close to the ear. A bit laid back would be better for human hearing.

The price is way too extreme. Try the Behringer Ultravoice XM8500 for $20. The XM8500 with a windscreen or a pop filter works just as good.
