Brought by the Spanish? What are you on about? Mesoamerican cultures believe the dead live in the underworld called Mictlan, which is not a permanent place, therefore, the living welcome them once a year. Dead is seen as part of a cycle, not an end, and it is not tragic by any means. The goddess of Death is also the goddess of fertility, because from death comes life. This celebration goes back thousands of years, and was only made to coincide with the All Saints Day by the Spaniards, it was celebrated in August before the Conquest.
Like with the Celtic Samhain. It was put on October 31st and they changed it to All Hallows Eve then later to Halloween. Samhain originally was in November and celebrated the Ancestors marked The Horned God's passing until is rebirth at The Winter Solstice. The Goddess as Crone took him to The Underworld to await His rebirth at The Winter Solstice and because of this the Veil Between The Worlds Vanished. Allowing The Spirits to return to celebrate for a short time.

I've always loved the idea of this holiday, what a pleasant way to view death and the memory of loved ones. As an american, I wish this holiday was more popularized instead of halloweeen in the USA
This has been part of the native culture in America specific to Central and North America, celebrated before Europeans arrived in this continent. The Catholic tried to end this cultural heritage by changing the name of the holiday. The Day of the Dead is one of the few cultural treasures that the Spaniards could not take away from the people
Even though I am not Hispanic, the Day of the Dead is one of my favourite days of the year as I love the tradition of honouring one's ancestors and those we have loved and lost

Because of the Galleon Trade that exports and imports trade from Acapulco and Manila for about 200 years, I think The Day Of The Dead of Mexico was brought to the Philippines because we also have this(although not really with festivals but it's a national holiday and you'd see a lot of people in cemeteries that day)
chicha roni actually i never knew dia de los muertos until i hve watched Coco, in the Philippines we also have thst tradition, its called All Saints Day or Todos los Santos, not as colorful and festive as Dio de los muertos though 😊
I watched CoCo & I think the day of the dead is a wonderful way to remember the dearly departed . Let's be honest in our own western culture we forget our loved ones with time & I think this is a beautiful way to make sure we never ever forget our ancestors..
I am Filipino and we celebrate Day of the dead with foods and music at the cemetery, if we are all around in the Philippines for sure we will visit the tomb of our departed love ones. Even they are departed they are still in our hearts, mind and souls.
Yeah. Napaisip nga ako na hmmm pareho lang kami ng kultura aaah. Pero, I think saatin wala lang picture nakalagay diba? More like foods and drinks lang. Tas mag iinuman ganon.
It was an example of the things that the Philippines received from Mexico, because there are many like La Virgen De Guadalupe that you worship in the Philippines, also got from Mexico (in Spanish) camote, tomate, chayote and la hamaca, and also México received the Tamarindo from Asia, It’s very sad that you don’t know your own history because for 250 years even though you were owned by the Spanish crown you were ruled by Mexico (New Spain) specifically from what it’s now Mexico City under the name of Capitanía General de Filipinas, until the independence of Mexico from Spain in 1810 and mainly because of the distance, Mexico “abandoned” the Philippines but stayed a part of the Spanish crown after that ruled from Madrid, until the independence of the Philippines, so it’s normal to see why the Philippines would have something resembling to the Aztec Día de Muertos (Day of the dead)
Coco brought me here. Such a beautiful tradition/culture. I'm also a catholic, on 2nd November we celebrate All Soul's Day. even tho you are not latin? You mean even tho you are not mexican?
I'm greatly fascinated with Mexico's Day of the Dead celebration. We follow the same tradition and belief as well, believing the souls of our loved ones return on that day. And preparing their favorite food, but not as joyous and colorful as they do in Mexico.
Amazing, I love this in the rich Mexican culture.
I used to be scared if the word "dead" but seeing this as I saw the movie Coco made it a natural thig to me as part of life
Thank you great Natural Geographic for this nice video
This Is MÉXICO!!! 🇲🇽
ESTO ES MÉXICO!!! 🇲🇽🇲🇽
In the Philippines we also celebrate Dia de los muertos but we usually call it All souls day, we always visit the cemeteries, pay respects. Thank you to the Hispanics to bringing your traditions to our fair archipelago, although the only one thing I remember not doing at the cemetery is eating 😂
It was the Mexicans who brought it over, not just any Hispanics
What a great tradition. Honoring your loved ones who have passed celebrating with them. I wish we had this is in the USA.
Oh its so nice i love this kind of feast ...yeah coco movie brought me here also...although we have also feast here in the philippines we also remembered our departed love one but this is different ...i love mexico!!🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽
I’m British and have no Mexican heritage but I’d like to celebrate this day
It’s nice to celebrate your family and remember them.
I’m not sure if I’m allowed to celebrate it though...
Yes ofc you can :) ! Just make sure you know how to make a proper ofrenda and are respectful. It's a day to celebrate your loved ones so dont be scared .
Anyone can celebrate ! But just like @xamavii said, be respectful and don’t be scared !
Yo estoy viendo puro comentarios gringos así que voy a poner frases mexicanas:
Viva México,está bien padre,está chido
Viva México cabrones
¡Viva Mexico! ❤
A huevo, viva México cabrones!!!

I've always loved the idea of this holiday, what a pleasant way to view death and the memory of loved ones. As an american, I wish this holiday was more popularized instead of halloweeen in the USA
Coco brought me here. I'm in love with this culture ❤
I already knew what it was, a very colorful celebration!
Yes it is!
This has been part of the native culture in America specific to Central and North America, celebrated before Europeans arrived in this continent. The Catholic tried to end this cultural heritage by changing the name of the holiday. The Day of the Dead is one of the few cultural treasures that the Spaniards could not take away from the people
Its not "Central American" it is JUST MEXICAN, Teotihuacan and Aztec origin
Capacitación y Consultoría Estratégica yessssssss
i'ts not "North America" just mexican, like mayans and aztec
Gracias! Bendiciones a Mexico!
Even though I am not Hispanic, the Day of the Dead is one of my favourite days of the year as I love the tradition of honouring one's ancestors and those we have loved and lost
Such a great way of celebrating and remember loved ones that have passed away! We don't do anything like this in Norway where I'm from.
I recently bought an adult coloring book called Famous Skulls.... it has dead celebrities like Frida, Marilyn Monroe, Tupac, Pancho Villa, Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson etc., so yeah this Dia de los Muertos inspired stuff is taking off! Love Mexico and it's rituals!!
Google lowrider Chicano Art some of the best Art.
I love this video. I teach Spanish, and I show it every year to teach my students about Day of the Dead. I'm very picky about the videos I show my students, and I love this one as it's fun and highlights what are to me all the important aspects of this celebration. Thank you!!
Muero por conocer Mexico , quiero vivir un dia de Muertos en Ciudad de México, lo escribo para que se me conceda este deseo ... Ley de la atraccion ! Quiero ir a Mexico !
has podido cumplir tu sueño?

We do it in our Filipino way also! This is one of the beautiful celebrations ever! 🎉
I know a lot of people came here because of coco so am I but I get to celebrate it because my family is Italian we celebrate day of the dead.
me encanta gracias national geographic
Why does national geographic make it easier to learn something than school

It’s not accurate at all
This is nice to see even though I know about Day of the Dead but just I'm glad you share the other people don't understand what is today's day of the day it is it's a culture that they do for many years and years and many years and honor of their family who are no longer with us and it's also good time to get together and take a moment to remember those so I enjoyed watching it my friend she's Mexican went out to yesterday and we had a good time enjoyed it so I'm doing another day with my miscon shirt on and 2022 and I'm in Florida such a beautiful day I hope everybody else is having a great day and if you're in Texas I hope you enjoyed the parade there I'm going to try to not Mexican parade next year I said fantastic day on UA-cam thanks and have a wonderful day to all
We had a Dia De Los Muertos themed festival back in college and it was so festive and so much fun.
"Remember me, though i have to say goodbye remember me, dont let it make you cry for even if im far away i hold you in my heart i sing a secret song to you each night we are apart remember me"
Yeah i came from coco
Wow I love how they decorated their graves I like this celebration 🇵🇰🇵🇰
My family and I continue to celebrate Día de muertos, but unfortunately there are fewer people who celebrate it. Children are more interested in Halloween and the candies. Before it was very used and popular, but now it isn't. 😭😭 . but there are still places where it is celebrated and very beautiful😍
Because of the Galleon Trade that exports and imports trade from Acapulco and Manila for about 200 years, I think The Day Of The Dead of Mexico was brought to the Philippines because we also have this(although not really with festivals but it's a national holiday and you'd see a lot of people in cemeteries that day)
You are correct! That is why there are Mexicans in Acapulco with Filipino blood and some Filipinos around Manila with Mexican blood.
@@Toomuchbullshitt mexican indigenous blood
That's a fantastic way to celebrate the dead.
We couldn't agree more! 💀
@Alexander LeyvaGarcia NO
Viva México!
I came here because of the Movie Coco :-)
Joaquin asc me too
Have you ever heard of the book Famous Skulls?
This was going on way before Coco.
chicha roni actually i never knew dia de los muertos until i hve watched Coco, in the Philippines we also have thst tradition, its called All Saints Day or Todos los Santos, not as colorful and festive as Dio de los muertos though 😊
I came I am Mexican
I watched CoCo & I think the day of the dead is a wonderful way to remember the dearly departed .
Let's be honest in our own western culture we forget our loved ones with time & I think this is a beautiful way to make sure we never ever forget our ancestors..
This is incredible.
That is right about day of the dead we celebrate our ancestors who been past away 💀
It's so cool
Isn't it a beautiful celebration?
I want to visit Mexico one day 😊 from Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹
Two big thumbs up for this upload! 👍 Now I feel like watching "Book of Life".. 👽👍
We're glad you enjoyed!
Watch coco
I am Filipino and we celebrate Day of the dead with foods and music at the cemetery, if we are all around in the Philippines for sure we will visit the tomb of our departed love ones. Even they are departed they are still in our hearts, mind and souls.
A beautiful culture. 🥰🥰🥰
We have that in Philippines too. It's called Kalag-kalag it's basically like that but less...dances and stuff
Yeah. Napaisip nga ako na hmmm pareho lang kami ng kultura aaah. Pero, I think saatin wala lang picture nakalagay diba? More like foods and drinks lang. Tas mag iinuman ganon.
Philippines was controlled from the New Spain (Mexico) long time ago, that is normal...
No one cares about that.. we are here for the day of the dead
Kalag-kalag comes in part from Día de Muertos

Coco brought me here. Such a beautiful tradition/culture. I'm also a catholic, on 2nd November we celebrate All Soul's Day. But this year is different and very special to me because I will be celebrating my beautiful Mother who passed away few days ago on february 13th. I'll decorate a sweet lovely beautiful offrenda for my Mom, and celebrate her ❤️
Book of life and Coco are the my favorite “Mexican” movies!
My mother taught me the importance of dia de los Muertos after my godfather passed away 3 years ago ive come to embrace it
This looks amazing!
If you are going to visit my town this November, I hope and have a great time, it is very beautiful and I wish you much happiness there will be.❤️
Is it strange that I, someone with no known Mexican ancestors, celebrates Dia de los Muertos??
Not really. I'm not Irish but I celebrate St. Patrick's day and Halloween.
Murica!
If u connect to something go for it just don’t disrespect it. it’s beautiful to see people embrace other cultures. Just remember that u shouldn’t try to cherry pick what u like abt a culture, especially when it comes to the actual people. U cant like the food or the holiday but then hate on the people. Also look into the history as well.
Not at all. If you are celebrating the ones who have passed, it doesnt matter what culture you come from.
No. Anyone can celebrate day of the dead, You don't even have to be mexican! :D
This is far more spooky fabulous than Halloween.
This was one of the most interesting events of my life: I was about 5 years old
One day I was in a cemetery In Mexico and when I saw flowers and cake for there loved ones that past away and when I was about to to eat some ( I know I was nosey )
And then when I was about to eat some someone slapped my hand and no one was near me. (It wasn’t scary it was quite confusing around my age)
Beautiful & God Bless!! For All The Souls!! 🙏🙏
Halloween = All Hallows Eve
Day of the dead = All Saints Day
They don't teach this in school.
ROMEO CARTER
All saints day = catholic tradition
Day of the dead = prehispánic tradition
@@19ars92 now its percent prehispanic percent catholic
@@Dalileadalilei
of course but im talking about its origins
not the mixture of European Religion with it
all saints day is not the same as mexican day of the dead
just like chinese day of the dead isn't the same as mexican day of the dead, or all saints day
It's nice seeing so many people intrested by our traditions
Why no oral narration?
same thing i asked
Thanks for your feedback. Why do you prefer videos with narration?
National Geographic It keeps the video interesting.
National Geographic I have to keep pausing the video to read if it moves to fast and I can't even focus on the images and what's going on because I have to read.. y'all are being lazy just putting words on a video this is not a kung fu movie
National Geographic I enjoyed the video just fine without narration. I don't think it was necessary for this video. People are just too lazy to read.
No more Halloween. Now day of dead November 2. Rip grandpa.🙏🙏🙏✌✌✌❤❤❤💎⚓👸🤴
sorry about your grandpa my grandmother died in 2008 so this year in day of the dead my family get to celebrate of her.
Catholicism itself is mixed with European indigenous religions...
A very beautiful day....I want to celebrate for all my friends(and few humans also)....:)
came here because of Pixar's movie, coco
It was a great video and gave a good explanation of the celebration.
Those saying this is satanic, know that satanic is your judgement towards others, your lack of knowledge about others' culture. That's what is truly satanic and promotes ignorance and hate.
