Es una tradición que compartian los pueblos originarios de América, desde México hasta por lo menos el Perú (desconozco el caso de norteamerica). Después con la mezcla y/o influencia judeocristiana género diferentes formas de celebración a los difuntos. Incluso en México mismo, la tradición yucateca tiene otros matices, pero en esencia es la misma tradición de honrar a nuestros antepasados.

Such a beautiful day for many ,I lost my mother on my 19th birthday, she was only 40YRS old and had a massive cerebral BRAIN hemorrhage...I've been so sad since that day and looking at what I lost ,and its kept me down and so sad until thos day ,I lm 52YRS old now and still so sad ,I didn't know how to grieve ,I was told to go back to work, the day after we had the funeral, so another words my Nona thought it was a good idea for me to keep me busy by working and not letting myself feel the feelings I had to have a happy smile on my face at work and be happy ,well I stiffed all my feelings away , Dont do this to your children, ( send them back to work the day after they put there mother in the ground) it didn't help me at all ,in fact it did the opposite, I stayed mad at God and have the ulsers to prove it, let your children take that time to be sad and grieve and let me go through the process, whatever way they can ,I definitely should have been sent to counseling,,,,ohhh my brother was told to stay home from work for 3 months he did ,now I come from an Italian family on my mothers side, the boy is always treated differently than the girl ..in my family that's how it was ,,,damage ,I don't blame my Nona at all for the way I am ,I don't place blame on anyone, God needed a special angel and that was my mother and only she could do the job ,that our heavenly Father needed her for ,is what I'd tell myself, but that only lasts for so long ,then rage was still building up and more resentment towards this God of mine, I even tried using a new God, and goddesses ,all this would just last to bide time ,when all along I was still just Burying my feelings, and it didn't work so don't do that to your children God bless you and celebrate life thank you.
We deserve a time to bury our loss and our pain. I lost my mom 7 years ago, it took me few months to cry her loss but a whole year to accept that she is not coming back. It's so painful. Im sending you a hug wishing you the best 💜
This is a very healing tradition. It doesn’t matter your nationality, please put an altar for your mother each year! You will not regret it. I have White American friends who are close to Mexican culture and out altars for their parents. There is something very beautiful and peaceful about this.

Of course we grieve, and we cry. But their memory and the moments we share are way more important and we know we will see them again, it's just a temporary goodbye. Los altares no son para competir, 😡 por que para la cultura mexicana el altar es símbolo de respeto y de honor a nuestros difuntos, mas no una competición o negocio, los altares se respetan, por que todos somos iguales en el mundo de los muertos, nadie es rico o pobre, al igual no hay competencia, discriminación o selectividad para muerte, mientras que en vida muchos discriminan a otros por el color de su piel o por tener más 💰, se les olvida que bajo la misma piel por la que muchos compiten, todos portamos un esqueleto del mismo color, al igual que al morir no nos llevamos nada y representamos lo que realmente somos 💀 y por lo cual nuestra cultura y los altares son sinónimo de respeto y no de competencia, así que no estoy de acuerdo con esto de competir.

The contest is very common in México, at least in the schools. I attended different schools in different cities and always we have to compete in the “Concurso de altares”, the most beautiful and creative altar won. I really don’t like that either.

Just like she said, it has nothing to do with Halloween, and a funny thing is that there are many people from the US complaining about it (ofc not everyone) when Halloween it's not even from the US but a Celtic tradition. Also, they were Mexicas, not Aztecs. That is a common mistake cause foreigners named them like so because of the mythical Aztlan. Soy mexicano, no en todo mexico se celebra el día de muertos. Es una tradición de centro-sur del país. Donde hay más indígenas, en el norte se celebra muy poco. Solamente se va al panteón a poner flores a las tumbas y pasar un rato con los familiares.

Most of Mexican traditions, art and culture in general are protected by the UNESCO, including territory and oceans, even by the Country, so they can't give permits for any use or destruction. If you want to adopt any practice of a different culture, learn the history, dont alter it, don't use it for fun. Mexican traditions come from the Aztecas, Mayas, Zapotecas, Mixtecas, ancient civilizations that are still living long before colonization, invasions, inquisitions and wars.
In México is not about competing on anything...It's about remembrance,honor and respect.Don't make it like "Christmas" that is all about bussiness and consumption.
Just a correction so that people gain a deeper understanding of the "Day for the Dead." Yes, it's "Day for the Dead," not "Day of the Dead." It's not a day belonging to zombies or ghosts as indicated by "of the." It is a day dedicated to the remembrance of those that have died; therefore, it's a day dedicated to the dead. It's a day dedicated (set aside) "for" the dead. Similarly, it's "Dia de muertos," not "Dia de los muertos." A subtle but significant distinction.

Amanda, I would like to say something about the origin of the icon of the Mexican Day of the Dead: "La Catrina" by the famous Mexican printmaker, cartoon illustrator and lithographer José Guadalupe Posada.
The image of a female skeleton is dressed in European outfit from his upper class time. She is offered as a satirical portrait of those Mexican natives who, Posada felt, were aspiring to adopt European aristocratic traditions in the Mexican pre-revolutionary era. So "La Catrina" has become an icon of this Mexican Day of the Dead.

Such a beautiful day for many ,I lost my mother on my 19th birthday, she was only 40YRS old and had a massive cerebral BRAIN hemorrhage...I've been so sad since that day and looking at what I lost ,and its kept me down and so sad until thos day ,I lm 52YRS old now and still so sad ,I didn't know how to grieve ,I was told to go back to work, the day after we had the funeral, so another words my Nona thought it was a good idea for me to keep me busy by working and not letting myself feel the feelings I had to have a happy smile on my face at work and be happy ,well I stiffed all my feelings away ,
Dont do this to your children, ( send them back to work the day after they put there mother in the ground) it didn't help me at all ,in fact it did the opposite, I stayed mad at God and have the ulsers to prove it, let your children take that time to be sad and grieve and let me go through the process, whatever way they can ,I definitely should have been sent to counseling,,,,ohhh my brother was told to stay home from work for 3 months he did ,now I come from an Italian family on my mothers side, the boy is always treated differently than the girl ..in my family that's how it was ,,,damage ,I don't blame my Nona at all for the way I am ,I don't place blame on anyone, God needed a special angel and that was my mother and only she could do the job ,that our heavenly Father needed her for ,is what I'd tell myself, but that only lasts for so long ,then rage was still building up and more resentment towards this God of mine, I even tried using a new God, and goddesses ,all this would just last to bide time ,when all along I was still just Burying my feelings, and it didn't work so don't do that to your children God bless you and celebrate life thank you.
We deserve a time to bury our loss and our pain. I lost my mom 7 years ago, it took me few months to cry her loss but a whole year to accept that she is not coming back. It's so painful. Im sending you a hug wishing you the best 💜

This is a very healing tradition. It doesn’t matter your nationality, please put an altar for your mother each year! You will not regret it. I have White American friends who are close to Mexican culture and out altars for their parents. There is something very beautiful and peaceful about this.

Of course we grieve, and we cry. But their memory and the moments we share are way more important and we know we will see them again, it's just a temporary goodbye. The contest is very common in México, at least in the schools. I attended different schools in different cities and always we have to compete in the “Concurso de altares”, the most beautiful and creative altar won. I really don’t like that either.

Hola soy de México y se celebra desde el 30 de octubre dónde llegan las almas de los animales luego el 31 de los que murieron en accidentes día 1ro de los angelitos los niños y día 2 de noviembre los grandes. Es muy lindo día por qué acudimos desde días anteriores a limpiar los panteones para que se vayan a poner flores , papel veladoras el día de la velada el día 1ro y la misa el día 2.
No es por ser mexicana, pero es de las tradiciones más hermosas del mundo.

Just like she said, it has nothing to do with Halloween, and a funny thing is that there are many people from the US complaining about it (ofc not everyone) when Halloween it's not even from the US but a Celtic tradition.
Also, they were Mexicas, not Aztecs. That is a common mistake cause foreigners named them like so because of the mythical Aztlan. Nevertheless officially they never recognized themselves like that, and there is no codex or official prehispanic document that identifies any prehispanic culture as Aztecs.

Soy mexicano, no en todo mexico se celebra el día de muertos. Es una tradición de centro-sur del país. Donde hay más indígenas, en el norte se celebra muy poco. Solamente se va al panteón a poner flores a las tumbas y pasar un rato con los familiares.

If you want to adopt any practice of a different culture, learn the history, dont alter it, don't use it for fun. Mexican traditions come from the Aztecas, Mayas, Zapotecas, Mixtecas, ancient civilizations that are still living long before colonization, invasions, inquisitions and wars.
In México is not about competing on anything...It's about remembrance,honor and respect.Don't make it like "Christmas" that is all about bussiness and consumption.
