- Every November 1st and 2nd, Mexico holds its largest public celebration: Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, a fusion of Roman Catholic and Indigenous rituals that honor and remember deceased loved ones. Far from a mournful affair, the holiday is a time of celebration and warmth. Correspondent Enrique Acevedo talks with Mexico City's minister of culture Claudia Curiel De Icaza about the city's celebrations; with acclaimed chef Elena Reygadas about baking traditional pan de muerto; and with author Regina Marchi, who has documented the holiday's growing popularity on both sides of the border in her book, "Day of the Dead in the U.S.A."

Truly a great Mexican tradition! ¡Viva México!
Day of the Dead is amazing. The costumes, art and use.of skulls is absolutely beautiful.
My little granddaughter who watched Coco on Disney+ with me and she was only about 7 years old and I woke up a couple days after watching that movie with her and I saw a picture of my dad on the stairs and she put an assortment of other things, flowers, ribbons and she found a candle holder and she asked me how did I like her afrienda that she made for grandpa, I probably didn’t spell it right. I thought wow she learned a cultural fact from a cartoon. I love it when kids learn new things, good things of course!
Greetings. The word is "ofrenda," and it means offering, gift, sacrifice. Or something valuable you lay at a sacred place. ✌

Heartwarming, I put my ofrenda like many other mexicans because of the influence of my grandparents that passed away long time ago, and I know one day my grandchildren will put my photo in the ofrenda as well.
Thank you everyone for the spelling help, I’m of Irish Catholic Heritage and all of my time attending Catholic school when I was growing up we celebrated All Saints Day November 1st, we even got that day off from school because it was considered a Holy Day of Obligation and we were supposed to go to Mass and pray for our departed. But I just had to share what my granddaughter did all on her own after watching Coco. I was really proud of her, she really loved my dad because she doesn’t have any grandfathers or a father and her Great Grandfather was so special to her,he lived to be 93 years old. So I thought it was really sweet of her to make the Ofrenda to honor her Great Grandpa!
As a Mexican who lives in Mexico I have learned from my culture to honor those who shaped my personality, those who loved me and are no longer with me.
How could we know how to make our way any further in life without knowing where we come from?
That’s our Mexican statement to the world.
Mexico is being rediscovered by the world and the new generations and it makes me feel so proud.
And let me tell you something, without Mexico, the world could have never been the same. Mexico is in the world’s psyche because of this connection to our family, our ancestors, our welcoming humane warmth to others, our music and of course our delicious tacos.

I do love Mexican food we eat it at least once a week sometimes more often. But I love many different cuisines, that is the beauty of America. We have embraced so many different delicious foods.

I am not from Mexico, not even born in the states. But since living in the US I have embraced the message of honoring the departed, a message celebrated in many cultures on the three continents I have lived. Every year I seem to add another piece of art and try another recipe.

I mean... it's not entirely a Mexican thing. All Saints Day is a Christian holiday for both Catholics and Protestants. Catholics regularly dedicate masses to the deceased. The specific imagery of skulls and whatnot adds the Mexican touch, but I see it more as a Christian thing than a Mexican thing.

Hollywood, U.S.A. only promotes (through film/TV) Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebration in order to make ca$h profit. I like that communities of the diaspora, of all sizes, create their own celebrations and are willing to share them with all.

Hey, Day of the Dead is not just a pop culture current event. This day has been celebrated for many many years. This holiday was celebrated by the Mayan people before the Conquistadors destroyed their culture way way back before even l was born. So many people loved this day of remembence for their dead ones.

my birthday is Nov 1 and my wife and I have held a birthday/Halloween/Day of The Dead party for many years. Recently, as we've grown older and life is starting to take more often than it gives, it has evolved into more of a Day of The Dead celebration than the other. I no longer have living relatives, so this festival gives me comfort as I keep the memory of my family alive. We now have an Ofrendas w/ our loved ones and encourage our guests to participate. I recently was able to console a dear friend who lost her husband to suicide. I encouraged her to erect a shrine and she told me how it helped her.

I love this celebration and one more opportunity to remember and honor my loved ones who have passed.
Im 45, since Im a kid we celebrate this at home, and all families around. Now is a celebration embraced by almost the whole world thanks to Coco and James Bond movies, but only down here in México feels the real thing.

It's confusing because in Mexico it is Dia de Muertos, but in many Mexican-American communities in the US it is Dia de LOS Muertos...
Es un dilema porque la forma correcta de escribirlo es Día de los muertos y la tradicional es Día de muertos. Es difícil exigirle a los estadounidenses que no conocen el contexto cultural que lo escriban de la manera tradicional.

The great parade in Mexico City is new of course, and much of the celebration also is novel. The core of the tradition is make an altar and go to cementery to celebrate with family and friends, this this has been going on for centuries.

Fun Fact: Disney tried to steal the name and trademarket it with the movie "coco", which originally was intended to be called "Day of the dead", but Mexico stopped them to do so.

Growing up in Mexico. For days of the dead October 31 to November 2. We did not do parades or dress up skull face paint. I remember we did put an alter, visited the graves, and a lot of praying. I also remember that each state and town had a variation of this. Times have change.

There have been parades all over México for this celebration for many years, James Bond took the idea of the "desfile de muertos" to their movies, just because you didn't see you doesn't mean it's not like that, Mexico city isn't the only place in Mexico...

Day of Dead sounds the same way as De LOS muertos to us. It's weird.
The difference is how it is presented in Mexico versus Mexican-American communities in the United States. In Albuquerque, where I live, they call it Dia de LOS Muertos. So I would say both are legit. It has nothing to do with "gringos." This is how it is said in Latino, Spanish-speaking communities here.

Elena Reygadas is one of Mexico's worst exploiters, it is a disgrace that she became famous because there are many testimonies of the abuses commited on her restaurants and bakeries. And she tried to cover up everything instead of changing stuff.
The day of the dead is therapeutic, it is like the red chair, saying or doing what you couldn't in life or remembering who you love encompasses within everything the phrase memento mori, remember that you are going to die so enjoy life to the fullest.

Although important, there's more important holidays in Mexico, particularly the Christmas time and Jan. 6, plus independence day in September.
Day of the dead was mostly celebrated quietly mostly by indigenous communities in southern Mexico. The skull iconography was not even prominent until a political cartoon La Catrina was published in the early 1900s dressed in period feminine attire. In central and northern Mexico All Saints day and such traditions of the Roman Catholic Church were more commonly observed around Nov 1. There's been somewhat of a bandwagon effect around the Day of the Dead holiday in other parts of Mexico where European settlements were bigger, as well as in the U.S. in recent years.
Its only in the last 20 years that Day of the Dead celebrations have been observed in other areas of Mexico particularly after the film Coco came out. There were no Day of the Dead parades in Mexico City 40 years ago although you did see Day of the Dead observances thanks in part to the indigenous communities that surrounded Mexico City then. These were mostly observed in the south though, particularly areas like Oaxaca, Michoacan, etc.

I'm Mexican born and American.
I went back and lived a couple of years in my native Guerrero, as a kid.
My aunt and women of the family took a whole week to cook, bake and put up the "Ofrenda" (Offering to the dead).
Alas, the tradition did not carry-over.

I hate how Enrique Acevedo exaggerates his accent. He is one of a few bilingual reporters in the mainstream with credentials to be respected in both the US and Mexico. He doesn't need to do that to play to the cameras.

He shouldn't have anything to prove. Maybe my criticism is directed more towards the American audience who thinks a journalist must sound a certain way to speak about certain things. I'm glad they mentioned how new this stuff is. The parade is a new thing, after the James Bond movie less than a decade ago. And a lot of the popularity of día de muertos came after the movie Coco. It's a pop culture phenomenon more than anything.
The parade is new in Mexico City, but not in other places like Aguascalientes, where is has been going on far longer than the James Bond movie.
The movie just incentivized for it to happen in Mexico City, and it also inspired its large scale.

Día de Muertos parade is new only in Mexico City; but in several mexican states it has been done from long time ago and maybe more traditional and colorful. By the way, I always wondered why there wasn't a parade in Mexico City being the capital of the country.
This speaks how little you know about Mexico. The parades have been happening in other states, waaaay before the James Bond movie and even before my mom was born (she is in her 60s). Yeah, the big parade in Mexico City may not be that old, so what? It is still our tradition. Also, Coco was inspired because the tradition was getting known in other countries around the world. In case you didn't know, there are a lot of Mexican expats living in other countries around the world that celebrate this Dia de Muertos. Also, Disney made the movie Coco because they knew the tradition was known in many places. They even try to copyright the Day of The Dead (I think it was in May of 2013), but the application was denied. This was before Coco (2017). Google it !!

I DID NOT SEE a single image of any one visiting the cemetery to clean the tombs, lighting candles, praying and remembering their dead loved ones. All this so called, "celebrations" you see on tv are just a cheap knock off of halloween.
Technically, November 1 in the Catholic World is All Saints Day. November 2 is All Souls Day.

the movie 007 created the parade before that it was just offerings at home and cemeteries and kids asking for coins mostly at houses. the parade idea was not realised before that movie few years ago.

To understand: The parade is one thing, in the wake of the James Bond movie, and another, the thousand-year-old, thousand-year-old tradition of the Day of the Dead celebrated hundreds of years ago. We Mexicans HONOR our loved ones who are no longer with us and that is why it is the altar, ofrenda, food, celebrations, etc. DO NOT confuse things.
