I have two Kenmore 158 models. They are tanks that can handle the finest chiffon and the heaviest denim. They are my work horses. I want to compliment you on starting each stitch with the needle down. It is old school and the correct method.
Recently purchased a Vintage Kenmore but a different model. She's lovely and works beautifully. Whoever had her before took really good care of her. Only a couple short hair-width scratches on her, barely noticeable. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the tip on using the single hole plate to get super straight straight stitches! Of course! It keeps the needle straight even when in the lowest position! Awesome! I love my 158.177 and 158.181 Kenmores! Personally, I don't really need the fancy cam stitches but I have them anyway! lol. Oh, also I love that cool table! Got to get me one but I'd have to find it locally eh. No shipping. Question: I get a single small loop in the very first stitch (on the bottom) when using nylon if I don't pull the 1" of slack out of the top thread after dropping the foot. Is this common? I just fixed my upper thread take-up spring and it works great now but I think that it might be causing this slack when I pick up the foot... cuz the pin releases the upper thread tensioner. Ya know what I mean??? lol
my mom just picked one up for $50 and apparently it's fine. 16 and 50 im sure are both steals for a machine like this. I wonder how much they cost when they were new. Suppose you'd have to adjust for inflation. Anyways, I hope yours worked great. I've never used a sewing machine before. Lots of homework to do.

Great application viedo but can you post a video on winding the bobbin? Because I can't get the bobbin to wind the motor runs but the bobbin will not turn

After cleaning, oiling & reattachibg it to the cabinet, it works beautifully except for the bobbin winding feature; the handwheel is stuck as if it had been glued & can't make it work. Any ideas/solutions for this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you & happy sewing y'all.
I can't tell exactly what's going on but I'm guessing that the bobbin winder is frozen/seized. First remove the bobbin winder tire, then oil the bobbin winder liberally, warm it with a hair dryer, it should eventually break loose.

Growing up I have such fond memories of her sitting at our kitchen table sewing things for me and my siblings. I didn't understand just how special that was. In fact, I sometimes felt embarrassed at school because I didn't wear the designer labels. (Jr. High school). My mother was gifted, in that she didn't always need a pattern to follow in order to create the "look" she was going for. She made everything from drapes to wedding dresses! After she passed away in 2016, I was given her machine, and all of her old patterns. Some of them date back to the early 60's! It's been a while since I have used this particular machine so I'm just a little rusty. That's how I found this UA-cam video. I'm proud to be using her sewing machine. I just hope that I can become just 1/10th as talented as she was. Happy Sewing y'all!! 😊💜💙💙💜
Sounds like someone never oiled the area, so the old oil turns to sticky like resin and eventually stuck. Not sure what to slowly add to the area needing unstuck to loosen it up slowly. Would take some time to get into the parts.
I have an Kenmore model 158.18033 hat has the Cams as well. I'm not a very experienced sewer so I have a lot of learning to do.. I just oiled this machine and have cleaned it up quite a bit!! I'm having some troubles with it. I can't get the bobbin thread to come up, do you have any suggestions? And I'd love to see more videos of your working with your Cams as I need to learn how to use that feature as well! Thank you for being so helpful!
I just bought a 158.1401 for $10 at a thrift store that appears to be in perfect shape... I also have a post WWII Elgin (Husqvarna) made in Japan with all the fancy stitch cams... but it seems that the needle is out of sync?... not sure but still trying to adjust it properly and may need to get it serviced... but the Elgin will even do leather.
Good find on the Kenmore! I don't think your Elgin is made by Husqvarna. Elgin was one of badge names that came out of the Japanese factories. Husqvarna made some machines under the name 'nordic' but not 'elgin'. Either way, I've overhauled a Japanese elgin and they are great machines.

I have a vintage German machine Privileg 470 and it looks really good. It's very clean on the inside, linked shiny clean. It only has a few dust specs. But I cannot see any oil in it! I has a tiny bit on where the hand wheel spins, but other than that it's pretty dry. I live in Romania and I am not sure what oil to use for it (or it any will be available) i want to clean it and oil it. Do you have any suggestions? What type of oil to look for locally? Many thanks!
Anything that is called "Sewing Machine oil" will work. It should be clear and thin like water. Never use anything like WD-40 or 3-in-1 for oiling your machine. Also don't use old sewing machine oil that has turned yellow.
@@tobyssewingmachinerepair8949 that's good to know, thank you. I have already taken it apart (not entirely) and cleaned it (it was pretty clean though) and then I oiled it. It ran pretty well, much smoother than before, but now lint is sticking more to it. I guess I need to keep on my cleaning game. Thanks for the advice!
Top Lever is Modifier, pointed at orange dot (not sure it matters). Top knob is Width OD and Special patterns ID. Outside knob is stitch width. O width for straight stitch is vertical and the white square with an orange dot on top. Bottom knob is stitch length. Orange dot is the shortest and wont reverse. 6 is the longest. (not sure but I think it is 6 stitches per inch) Top inner knob shows the stitch patterns depending upon the top modifier lever, color coded orange or white.
Sounds like it's stuck on the stretch stitch settings. Give the machine a goof oiling and see if that helps. If not, you should have them professionally serviced.
At 4:15 where you lower the shank to sew the material is where mine wont move at all. The thick shank will not budge....it wont go up or down! It is like the shank is stuck! My model is 158.14310 Any suggestions?????
Swing open the faceplate of the machine. Apply a few drops of sewing machine oil where the presser bar goes into the machine. Apply a bit of heat with a hair dryer. It should loosen up sooner or later. Once free, clean the presser shaft as best you can. There is probably gunk in there which jammed the shaft in the first place.

My Kenmore machine is wonderful except the thread comes out of the take up lever. How can I fix that? Mine has the cam capability also.

You can use "Singer" brands. I have this machine.

Can't get the bobbin to stay in
I have a 148 and a 158. But both do 2 stitches forward then one stitch backwards. Why??? Just want to sell or give away.
