      Hi Brian when I drive down to the Gulf Shores area I always stop at Evergreen for a break. • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  5 років тому +2

      Janice, if you are in zone 7 or above, then it should do okay. If you are in zone 6 or lower then you may need to protect the garlic/ground from freezing. You can plant the garlic and then mulch it heavy with straw, leaves or wood chips. Old chicken manure will be okay, just don't use too much because it is higher in nitrogen. Please let me know how it works out.

So the bed will get full East/south sun until 3pm, then tree shade after, which helps in 100+ temps in summer. Bottom of L-shape on north end of bed. May I ask why you planted them separately? Am in Holland and it rains daily, my garlic easily catches rust any tip on how to prevent that from happening specially that my other plants risk catchin 'em so I won't have to plant my garlic in isolation? Thanks in advance!

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  5 років тому +1

      Hello Ivy and welcome to my videos. Rust, as you may already know, is caused by humid conditions. To stop the spread to other plants, you can cut the infected leaves off (do not compost infected leaves) and probably the garlic will still form a head. Rust does not cause the garlic to be unfit for eating. The rust is a fungus and could be controlled by applying a fungicide. I don't know of any organic fungicides for this. Thanks for watching my videos.

      I grow a variety that has been great producer down to -60f.
      Northern premium white it is called. Heavy layer of mulch and wait for 4 feet of snow. Snow insulates the ground, so deep snow is helpful.

    OAG tell me your thoughts about raised bed gardening.

      @OldAlabamaGardener  5 років тому

      Alice: Great question. Actually I do have raised beds and for some vegetables they are great. The only negative I have of them is that they dry out easy. The ones that are not very high are better as far as staying moist. One great advantage of raised beds it that it is easy to improve the soil by adding compost and other soil building materials. Watch me planting cabbage in my raised bed in my video at: ua-cam.com/video/ANh9_xj48wc/v-deo.html
      Thanks for watching my videos. And be sure to subscribe because I will be making more videos as the spring months come on.

    Do you always plant in January? I usually plant mine in October.

      Sunny Skies: You are right, I was late in getting mine planted, but I think it will still be okay. We will see when spring/summer comes on.

    Hello I have a question does it really matter where you get your seeds like dollar tree seeds by American seed just wanted to no your opinion on that thanks

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  5 років тому

      Hello CG. I don't think it matters much as long as the seeds are what they say they are. You want to stay away from GMO seeds and crops. I save seeds from my own crops for most of what I grow. There are a few vegetables that I buy seeds or plants. Thanks for asking and for watching my videos. It is now the time to start planning for the spring crops, thinking about what you are going to grow this coming year. Thanks for stopping by.

    What is triple thirteen?

    Can you take and plant cloves bought from the store?

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  5 років тому

      Hello Gerhard and welcome to my videos. Mostly the answer is yes. It is possible that some garlic would have been sprayed to prevent or slow down the sprouting so it would keep longer in the store shelf. If it hasn't been sprayed then yes, you can plant it and it will grow. Thanks for watching my videos.

    Is your 13-13-13 fertilizer OMRI-listed? If so, what brand? Thanks! ~ Kir in Tennessee

      @OldAlabamaGardener  5 років тому

      Ron, I am not sure of what OMRI means. But triple 13 is not an organic fertilizer, it is just a commercial fertilizer.
      Good question.

    When is a good time to plant garlic in zone 7b?

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  3 роки тому +1

      I think mid to late October is best. However, a lot depends on the weather, if it stays warm, then planting later is better.
