I realize now that I planted my okra much too close together (about 10 inches apart). I planted them in early May straight from seed, just poking the dirt with a 1-inch wide round rod for about 2 inches deep, putting one okra seed in each hole and then covering with dirt. Have been watering them every day since, often 2-3 times a day during this summer's high heat (over 100 F most days) and draught. They are looking beautiful, maybe 20-24 inches tall now and I just learned the leaves are delicious raw (like in salads). I would love to try to grow some okra next spring....so we'll see if I actually do it. I don't have a lot of room but I wouldn't need very many plants since its just me. Thanks for sharing. Take care.
You might want to consider growing one okra plant in a 5 gallon pot or bag. It will need some kind of support because when it gets big it will tend to fall over. Thanks for stopping by. OAG
I have always admired all your videos. I had one question related to watering in soil blocks. Does this tray with soil block has drainage holes in it? If not, how do you control watering during seedling stage in soil blocks?
The tray does not have drain holes. I use that kind because I start seeds in the house under grow lights. Drain holes would put water all over the floor. I watch the soil and when it gets somewhat dry I water, but not to the point of over watering. Thank you for watching my videos. Thanks for the video.! NOW, I know how to use the germination trays - add some potting soil on top.! THANKS. I always thought that they were junk but I'm gonna try it your way this spring. I plant everything in the garden - live seed. However, my problem is germinating pepper plants - gonna try the trays and a little potting soil.!!! I love your videos and your knowledge.!!! Mine only shoot out 1 stalk - never a bush like stalk like yours. Is it because I plant them too close togther.?
I use the trays for almost everything I grow. I have much better germination rate that way. As to only one okra stalk, yes, planting too close together does that. To get multiple stalks or branches you have to space them out and feed them well. Thank you for watching my videos. Can't wait to see some broccoli videos. Hope you got some going this year! Also, i have a question. How come in some videos you use multiple types of fertilizers on one hole. But in this video you only use triple 13. Is it better to blend fertilizers or just use triple 13 by itself? Thanks!
As to multiple types of fertilizer: You may have noticed after I set the plant in the hole and covered up the root ball, I still had much room in the hole. I intended to come back later and add some worm castings and rabbit poop in each hole and I did, but I failed to make a video of it. So, in this video I omitted saying anything about it. You can grow great crops with just triple 13 fertilizer by itself. To grow really good crops you have to feed them and for large plants like okra, you have to feed them quite a bit. I do have some broccoli growing but it has already turned off cool here so I don't know how well it is going to do. I will video it. Thank you for watching my videos. If it is aphids, then a good mix of dishwashing soap and water should take care of them. If it some other bug, then you will have to use something stronger. My number one choice of pesticides is called: Pyola. Now, true, it is a poison, but, and this is the important thing about it, it is a contact only poison. That means it isn't residual on the plant. The spray has to get on what every you are trying to kill. If you spray and the spray dries and a bug walks on it, it won't kill the bug. It is however, non-selective, meaning it will kill what ever it gets on. You can buy it at: gardensalive.com OAG

Hey OAG, I looked at your video to learn more about planting Orka. I have Orka seedlings ready now, about to up pot them for awhile before planting into my beds. Your videos are value teaching tool Thank you for teach us !
If you have cut worms in your area, you will need to do something to prevent them from destroying your plants.

Wow...that is beautiful okra. I have been planting mine about a foot apart. I'll do it your way next time.
Planting close together also works. Just that the stalks grow real high.

@@OldAlabamaGardener I cut the tops out when I can't reach them and then they branch out. I grow in 7 gal pots now. When I planted inground, I put them 18" apart. I intend to plant tomatoes or something in the pots between the okra plants.

Thank you for this video..I will definitely give okra a try in the spring...does it need support at 3 feet apart ?
Normally it doesn't need any support. However, if you get a lot of rain and wind, then it may lay over. Laying over doesn't hurt it, it just doesn't look as nice as upright plants.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Okra is one of my favorite vegetables. However, I no longer grow it because I break out with a rash on my hands and fingers every time I touch it. My hands and fingers will sting and burn for hours and the rash lasts a couple of days. It's very painful. On the rare occasion that I do cook or pickle it, I always wear rubber gloves while I'm preparing the raw okra. Thanks again for the videos !!!

If you water here in the mornings and at Noon, it will boil cooks plants Only way to have grass is Drought Resistant grass. Like St Augustine or Centipede grass is the best > I like the St Augustine a little bit better its a bigger blade and a darker green grass> I took the 2 and mixed them for a very nice lawn, Yes they will mix. The St Augustine become St Auguspede make runners like crazy

If your plant was not producing side branches, you may not want to cut the main stalk off because cutting the top off will end the production on that plant.

Thank you. My Clemson Spineless and my Red Okra are producing but a black aphid size bug is attacking the blooms. What do you use for pests?
If it is aphids, then a good mix of dishwashing soap and water should take care of them. If it some other bug, then you will have to use something stronger. My number one choice of pesticides is called: Pyola. Now, true, it is a poison, but, and this is the important thing about it, it is a contact only poison. That means it isn't residual on the plant. The spray has to get on what every you are trying to kill. If you spray and the spray dries and a bug walks on it, it won't kill the bug. It is however, non-selective, meaning it will kill what ever it gets on. You can buy it at: gardensalive.com
OAG
@@OldAlabamaGardener Thank you, I used to have them mail to me. Then I move. I will contact them again. I tried Neem and soap, maybe I need to use it more often, and I have contacted Gardens Alive and ordered Pyola. Thanks, again, Ken
