  • ITS TIME TO HARVEST MY GARLIC. WATCH AS I SHOW YOU THE RESULTS!
    This is a variety called Hardneck garlic. It has a better flavor than the white garlic sold in stores. Growing it is easy, just watch my videos on how I do it.

    Pulled all my garlic two days ago probably over a hundred heads some small some pretty good-sized I think I need to start side dressing as you do all the way from Yakima Washington. Keep the videos coming learning a lot from you sir.
    Love your repurpose of the old mattress to a drying rack will have to try that someday myself.

    Didnt know about the bulblets. I was always told to plant replant the cloves of your biggest heads. You just plant the bulblets. In planting garlic video you were planting cloves.
    The number of leaves indicates the number of wraps surrounding the head. I wait till there are 5 green leaves left to harvest. Handling while harvesting removes a couple wraps leaving 3 good wraps. This is what I read from the book growing great garlic. Will also try drying head up. Always good tips here. Thanks for sharing.

    • @OldAlabamaGardener

      You are right, plant the largest cloves of garlic for your next crop. Apparently not all garlic produces the bulblets. The bulblets will also produce a new head of garlic but probably not as large as would a clove.

    Thank you for this. It was very timely! We moved onto this property Sept. 1 of last year. Had no idea what was already growing here. Saw these plants growing, but wasn't sure what they were. Once the scapes came up and bloomed, then I knew I had garlic! They were ready to be harvested, but I have had a very busy week that required me to leave the property. I managed to dig them up on July 4 and I noticed those baby bulbs like you described here. Some did stay in the ground, some came up with the mature bulbs. I really don't have a good place to dry the garlic, but I couldn't leave them in the wheelbarrow, so I dumped them on a hill side and spread them out. Hopefully this coming week will be a little less busy so I can clean them up.

    OAG, I got some yellow squash using your foil method. But the zucchini was a loss. The plant I kept up on my patio is by far the healthiest. I gave them all BT injections. The one on the patio also had SVB but I put it in a tub of water and it’s made a comeback . I started 2 more inside using Hoss seeds- Gold Prize squash. I could see from the get go that these were stronger seedlings. I’m going to keep them on the patio too.

    I live in zone 7 AL too, and I planted both hardneck (German) and softneck (Italian) this past fall around the end of November. My hardneck looks fine, and bulbs will be ready soon. However, all my softneck split, i.e., a single clove split into multiple stocks, and so no real bulbs are forming. I have no clue why this happened --- some say because of a wet freeze and others say because of too much nitrogen. This was my first year growing garlic in AL as I just moved down from the north (where I only grew hardneck). I thought the softneck would do better because of the heat, but I was really wrong. Next year, I am going to follow your plan. Do you have a favorite type of hardneck?

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  3 роки тому

      About where in zone 7 do you live? I think you waited too long to harvest and the cloves started growing again. Depending on where you are located, we have had some early hot weather. Are you in Madison county?

      @@joshuab738 I ask, so I can think about us being in the same climate. This you see me growing here was given to me by a friend. He thought it was garlic, but after growing it, I don't think it is true garlic, I think it is Elephant garlic and I didn't plan to grow it again. However, some came up volunteer this spring and I left it to grow. It is now very large. But, last fall I did plant soft neck garlic (some I bought at Whole Foods store) and it has done well, it is almost time to harvest it. When I do harvest it I will make and upload video of the entire growing process.

      @@OldAlabamaGardener I think you are right that it was elephant garlic (I planted some of that last fall too as a backup). I have never had my hardneck (German) put off corms (the seed pods in the ground) that you had. I think you are right that I waited too long to harvest the softneck though. I will have to try again next year for that. We tend to like the hardneck anyways because my wife likes to "kimchi" the scapes for grilling with beef.

      @@joshuab738 Then as you know we have had some unusual weather this spring. Unusually hot for a while and then below normal for a while. Just this week it has finally got close to where we should be for this time of the year.
