We don't become geisha to pursue our own destinies, we become geisha because we have no choice. She paints her face to hide her face. Her eyes are deep water. It is not for geisha to want. It is not for geisha to feel. Geisha is an artist of the floating world. She dances. She sings. She entertains you whatever you want. The rest is shadow, the rest is secret. Loved it.
I love how Sayuri is a complete contrast to the trainee who sat by her getting ready to hatsumomo. Shes sweet and kind while hatsumomo was cruel to newcomers of the okiya
In the book, the young trainee was important for Sayuri to become a geisha again after the war because the little gril was hopeful and looked up to her. The whole geisha thing still meant something wondrous to somebody. It was a pretty grim point of the book, so many people died and Japan was changing.
It is banned in China because Chinese actors wear kimonos for movies and protests in Japan because it is a high-class culture in Japan but not using Japanese actors.
Japanese can't speak english so they cant act, rather than humiliate themselves, they didnt audition. Japanese who audition like pumpkin ( she originally auditioned for sayuri but didnt get the part, can u imagine pumpkin as sayuri)
The one plot hole I saw in this was, Mameha took Chiyo/Sayuri under her wing as a favor to the Chairman. The Chairman had an interest in her yet Mameha pushed her at Nobu. I know Chairman stepped back when he saw Nobu liked Sayuri but unless he went to Mameha and told her to encourage that relationship, it seems she would have tried to guide Sayuri toward the Chairman. * Mameha first told Sayuri to lavish attention on Nobu to discourage Hatsumono f since she found Nobu repulsive. Mameha should have known Chairman would not want Hatsumono since he asked her to train Sayuri in the first place.
nobody Uknow chairman only wanted to help Chiyo, he didn't have romantic feelings for her. He grew into his feelings with Nobu, but didn't show interested because Nobu was finally interested in someone.
Go back tot the sumo wrestling competition, when Mameha first introduced them. Chairman's eyed her approvingly. Rather or not he only ask Mameha to help her, Mameha had to see the interest he was showing and the jealousy. If he had said anything to Mameha in the past about wanting Sayuri he may have spoken to her again and said that if she made his fiend happy, encourage the relationship between Sayuri and Nobu. Nobu, after it was over, should have taken Mameha, who respected him always.
It wasn't in the movie, but in the book. Plus in both versions, Mameha warned Sayuri against trying to pursue a relationship with the chairman because of her knowledge in Hatsumomo's mistake in pursuing Koichi and advised her to accept Nobu as her danna. Sayuri refused and tried to get Pumpkin for one last favor in helping her out by having him catch her with Minister Sato(Col. Derricks in the movie). Still harboring resentment over her homelessness, she brings the Chairman instead, effectively destroying Sayuri's chances of freedom. When she was confronted for betraying their friendship, Pumpkin coldly told Sayuri off that she deserved it. She reveals her anger by explaining how she(Sayuri) never appreciated the favors she had done in the past. How Pumpkin risked Hatsumomo's anger in making herself look bad to save her former friend from being expelled in Gion. She admits she is angry with Sayuri for stealing her position as the adopted heiress to the Nitta Okiya and forced her to be a prostitute to survive. Upon noticing her feelings for the Chairman, Pumpkin brought him there on purpose so he'd be disgusted by her behavior. In despising Sayuri, Pumpkin reveals that she'll never see the Chairman again and will be forced to accept Nobu as her danna. The Chairman admitted telling Nobu this after confronting an angry Pumpkin for her behavior, causing the former to cease his pursuit in being her danna.
The little girl in this scene had an interesting background in this book, her parents took Mother and Auntie in during the war. They were killed during the bombing leaving her orphan and in Mother and Auntie’s care. So they decided to raise her as a geisha

@@phantasma616 I think it's the concept of Geishas being forever barred from actually being "real" as in being a real woman who can love and freely choose who she is. While Geishas are painted and dressed and styled physically as women, by society's standards, they are "not real enough" and will only be considered as dainty toys and minor dalliances. Should a Geisha decide to become "real" she must get rid of her geisha identity and retire, essentially denounce her identity to become an "acceptable" "normal" person just for society to accept her back.
Yes they do. I've seen two performances, one was at a festival in Osaka, and again in Kyoto after a private tea ceremony (they're called Geiko there if I recall). Both were so amazing to watch. I don't know heaps about historical Geisha, but these days I think they're mostly hired, very skilled, entertainers (dancers, musicians etc.) who are free to have families and normal lives etc. They were treated with great respect as far as I'm saw.

Yet the newcomer was equally as frightened of her as sayurie was hatsumomo. (According to the book)

I hope whoever scored this masterpiece won every award available
It was John Williams, and idk if he won anything for this film in particular but he’s won plenty of awards, he’s fine
Well he did won a Grammy with this score :)
I don't remember if he did win, but Memoirs won a lot of Oscars
