Can we also sympathize with Nobu? He saved his friend, which left his face scarred. He was judged very hard for it and then was technically used even if Chiyo was forced to do it
The Chairman pretty much spelt it out at the end, hoping for Nobu to have a chance at peace and happiness. Despite the fact that this is growing story of compassion and love between Chiryo and the Chairman, Nobu is an unwitting obstacle, though not a malicious one because the story shows honour and respect for his character.
@@samantham7033 I kinda appreciate Nobu now that I am older He is very selfless and consistent in his character. IIRC he gave away being a danna to the chairman. Yeah I kinda not like the chairman now that I am older. He kinda went along for the ride a lot with Nobu
Sayuri loved the Chairman becasue he was the only person alive who was kind to her when a child and gave her the motivation to live because she had lost everything when she got sold and her sister was sent to a brothal instead of the same geisha house she was.
Because the chairmen seen she made his friend happy and he felt he owed his friend for saving his life. But in the end he couldn't hold back his feelings. I love this movie. This is one of my all-time favorite movies, so well made, with great casting and 🎉with impeccable acting by all. It's a classic as far as I am concerned.
4:39 I love how they put in this quick scene where the Chairman is looking for a match for his cigarette. This is a perfect opportunity for Sayuri to offer a light and make conversation, but just at that moment Mameha asks her to pay attention to Nobu. A missed opportunity.
Mameha's goal is to bring Sayuri closer to Chairman, not Nobu. and in order to avoid Hatsumomo's bad intentions (who was disgusted by Nobu's face), Sayuri was advised to get close to Nobu as a diversion, Mameha knew very well that Nobu would not be interested in a geisha. But unexpectedly, Sayuri's presence made Nobu interested and that made the chairman remain silent.
But also because mameha planned for them to get together. Remember the end when Nobu asked for Chiyo's hand in marriage? Chiyo was talking to mameha about it and found out it was one of her schemes.
When you think about it, it's crazy that we, as the audience, are routing for Sayuri and the chairman to end up together when he has a whole wife and kids at home. 😂 The part that he buys her sweet ice, he mentions his children briefly, but book touches on the fact that he's married.
I lived in Japan for several years, learnt Japanese as a profession, worked in Japanese company for many years. And I've never seen this movie for some reason. I've always avoided it. But now I see it's beautifully shot and not bad from the point of view of screenwriting. The cultural slice is very good. I feel like I'm in Japan (I have problem only with the fact that they speak English instead of Japanese).
The book was not well received in Japan, as it didn’t accurately depict Japanese life or culture at the time. In fact, Arthur Golden, the author, interviewed a famous geisha and changed the source material just for drama.
Japanese people didn't want to sully the reputation of Geishas and spread misinformation by acting in this film. This film and book did not accurately depict Geishas.
@@shadeofmidna-9897 oh I see :/ I'm japanese so I always found it really aggravating that people can't cast japanese actors for japanese characters, but they could've changed that for the movie!
The director said he hoped to find some Asian actresses with international influence, but it was obvious that Japanese actresses could not be found at that time.
This movie is excellent. But after watching it for years, last night for the first time, I didn't like the ending. She should have ended with Nobu. He was a good man and loved her. The Chairman was just a womanizer with good intentios 😂. Chiyo was obsessed with the first person that was kind to her. She was so broken she turned that into a romantic tale.
Saturi, aka Chyio, fell in love with the Chairman when she was a little girl of 9 or 10 on the bridge. When she was sad and he bought her a cup of sweet ice.
Hatsumno though mean really had a sad story. She was in love and couldn't be with him because she was ultimately property of the Geisha house. Her virginity was for sale once she reached a certain level of fame. The goal was to fetch a very high price once she was desired by many. This price would help pay her debt, or the cost of the money spent on her care, training, clothing, etc. The best outcome for the Geisha was to pay the house off and find a wealthy benefactor to care for them if he chose to. Some of them could possibly have their own Geisha house. Because of her forbidden love, she was no longer a virgin and was therefore worthless for this auction. She was stuck working as a Geisha and couldn't be with her love.
Its been a long a time but i heard it was because no one in japan wanted to play a geisha in the movie since in the storie there were things that werent true about geishas. It’s not a Japanese historical documentary. It’s a Hollywood movie based on a fictional book written by an American, filmed in Los Angeles, California. They want it to do big at the box office in the US which means the less amount of subtitles the better. Also why take the extra step of teaching the Chinese actors to say their lines in Japanese only then have to subtitle the whole movie for the target audience of Americans.
