    Fantastic video! Are there any other ways to remove the SKIM then what you’ve shown? Can it be done with a scan tool say?

    • @MongrelsGarage
      @MongrelsGarage  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you, as far as I know the only way to remove the SKIM is thru HP tuners…apparently it can be hit or miss with HP on the dodge stuff. Sending it out to someone to remove it tends to be the most reliable options, but if you have HP tuners doesn’t hurt to try it before sounding it out.

    • @MongrelsGarage
      @MongrelsGarage  3 роки тому +4

      I have an update to your question, HP tuners can be use to turn off the SKIM. Please check out ua-cam.com/users/DIYHEMI. These guys are great and very helpful!

      Update to this comment: You can definitely reset/disable the SKIM (NGC PCM’s) using HP Tuners but you need to know the proper sequence of events, it’s not as easy as just turning it off in the system settings.

    Quick comment in regards to the later 58 tooth reluctor. I've been told that Hotwire Auto's kit uses an '09-10 NGC controller for the later motors and only requires swapping some sensors. Doesn't mean that the controller doesn't have programming changes, but it would imply that the '09-10 NGC controller can be read the later 58 tooth reluctor.

    • @MongrelsGarage
      @MongrelsGarage  Рік тому +1

      I do recall doing some research on this and yes, if you change the crank sensor the new PCM will read the old reluctor (100 percent confirmed this) and vice versa the old PCM will read the new reluctor.

    Great information, so glad i found your channel.
    I have a complete 2004 Durango chassis that i plan on putting under my 73 IH Travelall body.
    I was thinking of just using a GM style universal wiring harness from painless to run the interior. Looks like the only connector i really need to touch is the white connector other than the OBDII hook up. My questions are:
    How to wire the acc/start from a keyed ignition in the dash? Would i just take the yellow wire from the painless ignition to the yellow wire on the dodge harness?
    Second, where would i tie in the fuel pump wire? to the PCM or straight to the fuel pump itself?
    Lastly, where is the best place to get my dash sensors information and would that even work with older analog gauges?

    • @MongrelsGarage
      @MongrelsGarage  Рік тому

      Assuming the yellow wire from the painless harness is the start signal, then yes you would wire that to the C1 pin 30 yellow wire. I do have another video specifically for the start circuit. As for the fuel pump…it depends, if you want the PCM to control the pump then you wire in a relay and let the PCM control the ground side of the relay. As for the dash sensors there are a few options. You can install separate sensors compatible with your dash, or you can spend some time converting the incoming signals to work with your instruments, or you could even run some gauges off the OBD 2 port.

      @@MongrelsGarage great thanks so much for the reply. I don’t have any tuning capabilities. Are you willing to tune my PCM for a fee or is there somewhere I can send it?

    • @MongrelsGarage
      @MongrelsGarage  Рік тому

      Sorry, I don’t do tuning, the good news is, depending on the PCM and application you may get away with not tuning in the short run. If you have a black key from the donor then it may not have SKIM and will fire up for you. It will throw a code for rear 02 and maybe some Evap codes but should not effect it’s running. There are a couple places that can tune though, except you might be better off getting a 2005-2008 PCM if you can as the 03 and 04 are limited as to how much tuning can be done. There is also HP Tuners that you can use yourself.

    How did you wire your fuel pump? Was the fuel pump relay wired with 12v to pin 30, fuel pump positive to pin 87, ground to pin 85 and pin 86 of the relay to the brown wire (pin 37 on the black/natural C3 connector) to the ECU? Thank you.

    • @MongrelsGarage
      @MongrelsGarage  3 місяці тому

      Remember most the control functions are ground switching so the computer provides the ground to latch the relay. I think the transmission relay is different but that is a another topic. So pin 30 and 86 have power. Pin 87 goes to the pump and pin 85 goes to the computer, so yes the brown wire on the C3 connector.

  • @tecmotiondyno

    A couple things I would add - Most multimeters have a continuity ("tone") function that emits an audible tone when continuity is present. This is often a better way to check wiring continuity than just the Ohm function. Another tip for this is to use an unfolded paperclip with an alligator clip test lead for testing connectors with tiny pins like the 0.64mm pins used in some modern automotive applications. Another helpful item you could add to your bench is a lab power supply which will give you a reliable, configurable voltage and amperage power feed for stuff like this. It will also help you with testing 5V based automotive components or checking components at an alternator-like system voltage and is smaller and easier to deal with than an actual battery.

      I think this is a question about the other video and the park safety switch. Short answer is no it will not work as these focus on the truck PCM, the big difference is that the cars use a separate controller for the transmission. I have not play around with the car PCM/TCM much so I have limited knowledge on them. Sublime Technologies (AKA DIYHemi) would be a good source. Does your PCM even have the green connector on it or is it blank?

      You will need to decide what functions you want to keep. You can leave the donor harness intact or thin it down to only the items you require. For the most part you will need to supply power and grounds to the PCM, and at least three relays. The Auto shut down (ASD) relay, Fuel Pump Relay, and starter relay (on your 06 this one can be controlled thru the PCM or be standalone). You will need certain sensors hooked up and as you mentioned the gas pedal. You will also need to be able to tune the PCM, I recommend HP Tuners, however other options are available.

Many thanks .

    • @MongrelsGarage
      @MongrelsGarage  Рік тому

      Thank you for the sub. There really is only one HP tuners…they have different interface tools, but the software is the same. If you want to do live data logging and a couple more advanced features then you go with the pro, but the standard package will work for this. I use the MVP2, but I believe they are now selling MVPI3 which is just the new version of the interface tool and will work fine. There is no rewire required if you are using it on an existing obd2 equipped vehicle. This video is for taking a junkyard system (from a Ram Truck) and using it in a older car (swap). You will need to wire an obd2 port into the older car. The SKIM is just the security for the PCM, you will need to reset it. I don’t go into it in this video but DIYHEMI (sublime technologies) has a specific video that shows you how to deal with SKIM.

    • @MongrelsGarage
      @MongrelsGarage  Рік тому

      Honestly my tuning skills are in their infancy, but I would say no and additionally you would not want to, as it protects the driveline from much greater damage. What you can do possibly is address what is causing the limp mode. If there is a sensor that is no longer used after a swap you can tell the system to ignore the sensor input, for example EGR or Evap, however those type of systems rarely cause a "Limp Mode".

      I would imagine you will need to do some tuning. However the 2003-2004 Rams with a Hemi used a throttle cable and were not drive by wire, if you could find those components in a junkyard it should bolt right up. If you are using the engine from a 2003-2008 as your donor then you could use the 2004 PCM potentially, you may still need to match up the VIN which will take a programmer to do. Hope that helps you out.

When looking at the front of the connector the red lock will need to go to the left. Then you need to insert a pin extractor into the front of the connector in the smaller slot to unlock the wire and gentle pull it out from the back. @@MongrelsGarage I was trying to figure out which wire went to which post on the relay coming out of the c104 engine side connector. On the Mopar connector site it doesn't tell you what the wires are only tells you the circuits

      It should be pin 14 on the C104, Brown and White…there is a possibility of it being brown and yellow, but believe yours should be brown and white that should go to pin 86 on the relay…this is just going off memory, I’d have to double check, pin 85 will be switched power, pin 87 will be power out to injectors and coils, etc. Pin 30 will be supplied batt power.

      Hello Mark, no HP tuners is not free…but it is reasonably priced. The hardware costs $400-500 to buy comes with the software and a couple credits to do your first PCM.

    I have a good question I’m glad I seen your video I have a 05 dodge magnum rt I swap my motor out with a 2009 charger srt8 6.1 that only came with the wire harness not the pcm but I keep my original pcm from the 5.7 I plugged up the 6.1 harness to my 5.7 pcm and I’m getting a no crank no start any suggestions as for what I should do next or should I hook my 5.7 harness to the 6.1

      Sorry I have not played with the 6.1 stuff much, sounds like a configuration issue. I would reach out to DIYHEMI, they are awesome and very knowledgeable

    Well I can for sure say a 05 & a 07 will not swap over. Even if you change the key, skim and pcm. I just changed all 3 and the lights would come on. And there wasn’t any security light it went off. But as soon as I went to crank it, it did nothing what so ever. Like a dead battery. TY for at least messaging me back.

      I can tell you it’s going to be an interface problem with the rest of the vehicle modules. The engine itself should not care which PCM (05-08) is used.

  • @Hendogg28
    @Hendogg28 Рік тому +1

    Ok so if I understand you correctly the 03-08 PCM has the same computer in them. So does that mean they are wired up the same way? Like I know 03-05 is none mds and 06-08 has mds. So can I take say a 07 that had mds put in a 05 computer and skim and key switch and it will fire up and run like it was in a 05 body? Or just take the 05 pcm and change the vin number inside of it to match the 07’s vin and it’ll do the same thing? Like I have a 07 Aspen that the mds messed up and wiped out the engine. So I replaced it with a none mds 05 reman engine with nothing mds related.. But I think my pcm is taking a dump.. Thanks for any and all info you maybe able to share with me..

      They are not exactly the same in computing abilities, I would stay away from the 03-04. Yes, a 05-08 should run a 03-08 engine. Some minor modifications may need to be made such as the crank sensor, but they should run it.

      I just wanted to make sure dodge/Chrysler didn’t do something weird like I’ve seen with other companies and move wires around in the constructions, Where someone would have to move wires is all. Yeah I’ve heard and read that the 03/04’s are very hard to tune and that you can’t really do much at all with them.
