I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) that is my beloved project rig. I do not like the 4.7L V8's that came in those and I am _going_ to swap in a different V8. I'd like to keep it Mopar (too many LS swaps out there already). I was going to ask in the comments if the Eagle heads would swap but, you just clarified that for me. I'm also considering a 360 Magnum. A strong, low RPM idle and off idle torque are far more important to me than upper RPM horsepower. Do you think a stroked Magnum would be best for me? Or a Gen3 Hemi?
I just wanted to say, thank you. Now my head is spinning with ideas. SWEET! . . . do you have a channel or website? . . . greetings from Alaska.

Here's the hilarious thing, they basically dogged the early 03 to 08 Hemi for not making power, YET in their Hellcat Hemi Power episode their 03 to 08 Hemi made almost 500 horsepower naturally aspirated before they slapped the procharger on.
I really don't know how they screwed this test up when Richard Holdener already did this test that they basically re-ran on the same dyno.

@@mails5054 from personal experience and Dyno testing. Stock coils and plugs work best. Coils are just going to be an unnecessary expense and they don't have the durability/longevity of the OEM. When shopping for plugs, if you're not using nitrous or a supercharger or turbocharger stick to OEM plugs. Even when guys run those modifications most of them stick to the same design and manufacturer plug that came out, they just have to use a cooler heat range. The engineers did their homework to make the most durable and consistent performing engine they could. Also in my experience, running an "upgraded" plug that's made out of a different material changes the resistance of the plug (usually decreasing it which means the coils have to work harder) causing intermittent drivability issues and premature coil failure. Don't fall for the gimmicky claims about ignition.

I had an 08 pre eagle engine with ported heads, long tubes, and a custom cam with the same lift you used and 214/222 duration at 112LSA+3° ground in that laid down 360hp @5500 and 360tq @4500. Bone stock the truck laid down 260hp@5000 and 275tq@4200. That's roughly a 100rwhp gain and if you do the back math to the engine that was rated at 345hp and 375tq, it's producing 477hp and 477tq. I think y'all probably chose the wrong cam and the carburetor was a poor choice vs the stock EFI and manifold. The answer is still unequivocally yes, the eagle engine is superior to the pre-eagle engine.

I feel like you could of given life to the 03-08 hemi engine I've seen some people swap eagle heads and put a 6.1 intake and swapping out the lifters as well. For sure hands down the vvt hemi is way better performer. But I think for some of us who don't got all the money to run on swapping out all the wire harnesses and getting all the computers etc just to run the vvt hemi only speaking for 3rd gens I'd still stick with the previous 5.7 and do the head swap. With 6.1 intake. It be cool to swap an 8speed with the vvt in a 3rd gen but I think it's a lot of trouble and more money to do. But can be done though. To fit either foolinjected engine to an early car is that you need at least the computer they come with. Then you have to wire it into the car. Expensive!
Using a Holley set up is more expensive and doubtfull any better on a stock engine.
My suggestion is use a carby 360 with good aftermarket heads, carb and ign. And it should bolt in.
The same with SBC V LS in a GM scenario. By the time you buy everything to fit the LS spend the same money on the SBC and it is as good. And fits the car!! The only adavantage is the weight of the alloy enegine,,, but people are not using them!!
The later efi engines are excellent in a car they belong too. Though it costs plenty to extract more power

Yep throw on some eagle or 6.1 heads, flow is nearly identical, slight edge on the intake for the eagle and slight edge on the exhaust for the 6.1 heads and both raise the compression on the early motor with no VVT to worry about and the block and rotating difference are negligible. If your planning to stroke one really makes no difference besides the eagle version is now easier to get aftermarket parts for. I'm in the process of getting parts for a 396ci stroker pre eagle with ported 6.1 heads with claimed 370cfm on the intake side with compression in the 10.5 - 11.0 range with 237/251/113/+3.5 camshaft and a ported 6.1 intake.

If you get the 03-08 with computer, wiring and everything for 400-1,000 dollars, do the same cam with Edelbrock heads and a proper oilpan, this could be a solid streeter in a midsized to early small car such as a Volare/Aspen or a Dart/Valiant. Honestly the early gen 3 hemi's had possible issues (didn't always happen, but enough for concern) with exhaust valve seats popping out, you need ahead swap anyways, may as well get a set of Edelbrocks or any other performance based decent priced head. Not a huge fan of VVT anyways, if i had it i'd be eliminating it, so for a streeter with occasional drag runs, the older one would be perfect for me

I was thinking nearly the same thing. This wasn't a fair comparison IMO. The Pre-Eagle engines need some modifications to keep it an apples to apples comparison, mainly better/aftermarket heads, and a better cam choice. Both engines need spring upgrades, which most everyone does with a cam swap regardless. At the end of the day, They compared stock for stock, with an improper cam swap. If this was done correctly with proper springs, Both engines would make a bit more power, and the Pre-Eagle unit, give a fair cam swap, would have done a lot better. Still not as good as the Eagle but better.

      @JETZcorp 2 роки тому +7

I guess it depends on what your baseline is. If I was considering a Hemi swap, it'd be in my Dakota R/T and the stock 5.9 already has the torque covered pretty well. Same would be true for an older Mopar with anything bigger than a 318. I think what makes the Hemi worth considering as a platform is that high-end breathing. If it's not going to spin then I don't see the point of choosing a Hemi at all as opposed to low-buck LA or Magnum motor.
Also, the big thing with the modded Eagle motor was they put a bunch of cam in it. The stock one really did have buckets of torque everywhere. Personally that's the one I would choose, just so I didn't have to tear into the thing. Although what I'm REALLY going to choose is to keep my stock 5.9 because I'm poor.

Not apples to apples for sure but I feel the point was made that the 03-08 is cheaper but tops out way sooner than the eagle version of the GenIII.

You can lock out the VVT which would cost top end power and torque, but would have been rather close to the EFI. EFI on both, carbs on both with the same internals would have made more sense IMO. All the engine builds where they show "and it comes with pre-cast holes for fuel injection, if you choose to go that route, but we're opting for blah blah blah carb", it would be nice to see a build where they actually used them, and built a motor to go into today's muscle, as there is not as many yesteryear vehicles [left] being modified.

On the long run I think you'd waste more money on buying the vvt for a swap. And honestly you can swap the eagle heads from that vvt hemi to your magnum hemi. And use a 6.1 intake and lifters. To get some more power out of it then you'll be able to run a bigger cam instead of a small one.

The truck was 380-395 crank hp and 407-410 lb/ft. The pre eagle hemi in the LX cars was rated 345-350 crank hp and 390 lb/ft of torque. So, a peak difference of 25 hp and equal torque between the two "car" engines. These numbers seem to be on par with a lightly modded pre eagle hemi and theirs, but the numbers on the eagle hemi look way inflated unless those are some incredible headers they have on there. From my personal experience, my L92 Escalade ESV absolutely embarresses my wife's 2012 5.7 JGC in acceleration. And, I also have a lightly modded (LMI intake, suitcase delete, hemifever 93 tune, 180° t-stat) 07 300c AWD that has repetitively pulled ever so slightly on my buddies 2013 AWD 300c with just a muffler delete. There is a negligible difference, as the new cars got heavier. But, I can't see 440 crank hp on a "stock" 5.7. That's more than the 6.1 ever made.

I wonder if a duel carb with a better cam make a difference against the fuel injection

They're not mentioning the cost of a stand alone for the efi. Would love to see a carbed 6.4.

I had a 2005 Chrysler 300c early build 07/2004 (I'm talking 16x2 foot long(+-😆) sparkplug wires). @ 120k, I wanted to have some fun, I called up Inertia Motor Sports and put together a plan on a super budget! Purchased a used Eagle intake manifold had my 5.7 heads hand ported to match the eagle intake manifold milled 40 over, a Super Spartan (something something 🤷🏾‍♂️non-mds) this was NOT a rebuild , same 120k rods, pistons, rings, crank NOTHING else! At that time (2011-ish) I was told she had the record for highest HP cam only 5.7 Hemi
@ 404rwhp? and she was a lot of fun!!
I also had an even earlier build 2005 Magnum R/T (05/2004 build) maybe something about those "SPAGHETTI" wires draped over the manifold 😆 (UGLY engine compartment very basic full exhaust, cai and a hand held box tune and she was fast too for want it was.

This 3rd Gen Hemi is only a marketing ploy. . If you want a real Hemi you have to go to the experts. FHO being my choice.

Long tubes, a cam and most importantly, port and polish the exhaust ports as much as possible, and you get massive power out of a 5.7 HEMI. Easily in the 500 - 520hp range. The entire engine is so perfecf for making horsepower... except the exhaust tract. The intake flow numbers are insane. The port angles are perfect. The intake valves are nice and big... but then they put a somewhat small exhaust valves, with a tight exhaust port, a stock cam with not enough exhaust lift or duration, and absolute garbage exhaust manifolds.
It's clear too me Chrysler wanted the 5.7 held back for a reason, and I get it. If it had even half decent exhauat manifolds and more appropriate exhaust ports, the 5.7 would turn out an easy 410hp with nothing else. When they upgrades rhe 5.7 in 2009, the 6.1 was making 425hp for $10,000 more. They handicapped the 5.7 because they knew they would never sell the 6.1 for $10,000 more, kf the 5.7 was making only 15 less hp for $10,000 less. That's my theory.
