Purple Yams on a Teepee Trellis For Hundred Pound Tubers!

- Dioscorea Alata, or the purple Chinese Market variety, is quite fun to grow in the food forest, but because of it's invasive tendancies - we choose to keep it controlled by growing the climbing crop onto a bamboo teepee (or tipi). This is only the 2nd season that this special tuber has been in the ground on Sandhill Farm, so it's still rather small, but within a few years - this yam has the potential to reach 100 pounds or more. You are rocking it with your food forest
I found some of these purple yams at a market and planted them. I used my daughter's old playhouse that she had outgrown as a trellis and only 2 yams darn near covered the whole playhouse and jumped into a nearby magnolia. This vine grows like crazy in the summer Central Florida sun. Beautiful vine but a very agressive grower! The 2nd year it got loads of egg sized purple bulbils all over it. In the Fall of year 2, the vines all started dying back. When I dug up one of the roots I was floored at how big it got. It had crazy thick hairy finger like roots going in 5 different directions off the main root and all the huge chunks combined weighed close to 40 pounds! There was no way to get it out in one piece. Fun to grow but I still find shoots coming up a year later from bulbils I missed when I cleaned up last years vines. Any pieces of the monster root left in the ground will resprout in Spring and keep going.
Lisa Shifflett I feel your pain. We've also learned the hard way and now only grow them on a teepee to control the aerial tubers from littering our yard.

It's Ube..you can sell the root crop. Lots of Filipinos will buy that if u sell it, We make Ube Halaya out of it, it's a very delicious dessert.

They are called "Chinese Market" yams because you can buy them at your local Asian market and plant them. San Wa market in Tampa/St. Pete has plenty of these. 100 lbs. is pretty optimistic, I doubt that anyone has done that in Florida, but fun to try.

Probably as many times as you like, but it might take energy away from the tuber

Very impressive! If we let vines ramble on the ground, will they send new roots (and form tubers) the same way sweet potatoes do? Im growing the ube (Dioscorea alata) too, but its my first time.
I think they want to climb and probably do not send roots down. They do send bulbils which drop and can form a new plant, the next season

Diane Hammer I used Bamboo canes from the farm, they are at least 20ft tall. This one is now gone since the hurricane ☹️

Jeff - we will try to add it in to the footage more. Thanks for the really good advice. I have both names listed on the cover photo & the description & on this particular video, we were pressed for time on the edit. But you are right - it's pretty important to have it everywhere.

Having the names in the description works for me, and is probably easier than getting it in the video. I will say I found the music a bit distracting. My preference for music would be to have a track that is uniquely yours that you just use from video to video--similar in style as to what you did here, just kind of background music, but I would prefer it to fade to almost nothing for most of the video (noticeable at the beginning and end, very subtle throughout the rest).

Does the flavor degrade between that little hairy booger and the 100 lb momma root in the ground? We grew huge pumpkins and even tasty varieties, small, didn't hold-up taste-wise as they got huge.
Pirates Cove Piratas Ensenada - we really can't say from our own (lack of) experience eating them. This is only the yams' 2nd season in the ground here on our farm. We've had cooked dishes made from the large specimen excavations & the flavor & texture was good. I'd have to ask my friend Andy - he's had a lot of experience with them. I'll get back to you...

If I manage to grow some , when the time is right, I'd pull up a 100lb purple yam and have a Yam Harvest and have to share my luck. Two of us couldn't eat that much yam alone. Living in a very diverse neighborhood, with many SE Asian and S African immigrants, I suspect they'd love some free yams.
Pirates Cove Piratas Ensenada - you only need to cut off the amount you plan to eat. It will "scab over", re-sealing itself until the next time you want to eat more. It's very different from a sweet potato in this way. I'd love to hear back from you after you trial it out where you are!
No it doesn't. The color will be ligther but the flavor is still the same.
Back in the Philippines, we call them, Ube, and its quite popular. We make sweets, chips, pastry fillings, smoothies and even ice cream out of this yam. Uniquely purple colored sweets!

Chinese market variety? This yam is native to my home country, Philippines. In the Philippines, we call this yam Ube (pronounced oo-be).

Janderra - not a good idea for sweet potatoes. They root where they touch the ground, creating more tubers. You could do this with beans, chayote, calabasa, beans, gourds, etc.

That looks like a kumara. Yams are different. The bigger they get the less sweet and more woody inside. There are 3 colours of kumara, often called sweet potato. Purple, orange and brown. I like the orange ones, much nicer than the purple. Look up new Zealand yams to see the difference. I buy yams from the supermarket and plant them once they sprout in my cupboard. Same with kumara.

Hey Jennifer! It’s not that I don’t wanna sell them but I can’t legally sell them. They’re a class 1 invasive in Florida and highly illegal.
@@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL How can it be?. I only know the (Air potato) and seen it everywhere but not the (Purple Yam). We can't buy it at all!. I have to drive many miles to the Mustang Flea Market in Tampa to fine it. Even at that flea market only 1 person have it and she charged me $5 a pound. She had only 2 roots, one is $25 and the one I brought for $8.00 and that was it! I never seen it in the wild. If you tell me this then I believe you, however I never seen the while purple yam to be invasive plant. Thanks for the info. I learning.
