Disclaimer (s): The music & music videos I'm referring to will almost all be Western, and even more specifically American, so that's the frame of reference I'm speaking from.)
Music videos have revolutionized the way we experience our favorite songs. Music videos, and television in general, have added a visual element to music. This has allowed artists to transition from just singers to entertainers, meaning the way they presented themselves on stage and in their videos was now just as a large a part of their artistry. Of course, music videos wouldn't be as popular as they are without MTV or the VMAs, which provided iconic pop culture moments for fans. Artists of all genres had made use of music videos to market their music including Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Madonna, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga. The Internet pushed a lot of music video viewership online, which has allowed artists like PSY, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa, and Nicki Minaj to go viral. Music videos aren't just popular for pop artists, but have been a staple for rock, hip-hop, and R&B artists too. Artists like TLC, Aaliyah, Kanye West, Destiny's Child, and Mariah Carey regularly accompanied their songs with high budget videos. In this video, we'll take a look at how music videos have evolved over past decades, and how they've become what they are today.

Everybody say Thank you to Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson is the reason why artists started to take music videos seriously with the dance routine, storylines, productions and visuals. And you should have included the most essential history between MJ and MTV. After 2 years of its launch, MTV lost its relevency, the majority of the audience lost their interest and the network was about to shut down. But when they were pushed to play MJ's billie jeans and beat it, the network regain its life and after the release of the Thriller music video MTV got into a different dimension of success and MTV became the MTV. Then VMA was born. MTV never gave proper credit to MJ which is disappointing.

THIS RIGHT HERE!!!! This comments needs to be pinned.
Oh we know!!!💖👍🏾 King of Pop!!! ⭐❤️👑
They tried to give credit by renaming the vanguard awards after him but tried to play him after Oprah dropped that bullshit surviving never land documentary
black artists like missy, aaliyah, tlc, janet, michael jackson, busta and more pioneered the black futurism aesthetics so well and seeing artists like beyonce, rihanna, kanye, kendrick & others continue to carry the torch is amazing
Yesss. I’ve said this 100000 times but i thought Chloe and Halle were gonna bring it back frfr w Ungodly Hour
I have been obsessed with Missy, especially with her release of 'Da Real World' 😩
And FKA Twigs ;)
Scream by Janet and Micheal was the first “futuristic” music video setting a trend artist would do for the rest of the Y2K era.
I don’t think Beyoncé use futurism in her videos most her videos are throwbacks type
Michael Jackson, Madonna, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, & Lady Gaga have the most iconic music videos of all time
I feel like mj should be on a whole step ahead of the rest because he didn't just have thriller, but also billie jean, beat it, smooth criminal, bad, black or white, jam, remember the time, in the closet, and sooooo much more. The man was and still is The King of everything music
@@theoblongemperor5918 AND that was in the 80s and 90s with limited visuals and tech.
You can't leave Janet & Mariah Carey outtv this collective, come on now...❤ 1986- 2016 & 1990-2022 respectively 🎉
Janet Jackson and Aaliyah too
I’m not even American and all I can say is Michael Jackson is the STANDARD for all the artist
I still remember the night in 1983 that my parents put my siblings and me to bed early because Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video was premiering and they wanted to watch it in peace without three little kids being terrified by the zombies. From then on, all of his subsequent video premiers were treated as huge events. You cleared your calendar and you simply did NOT miss one of his premiers. “The Way You Make Me Feel” is my favorite video of his to this very day. I feel that he really pioneered the music video on par with a movie production and he elevated the art form like no other artist in his time. MJ gets allllll the props 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
I honestly wish I was alive for that era. Even hearing my parents talk about it now they still have a lot of joy and excitement when they think back about it
@@naomi.cannibal same, I can say I was alive and old enough for his final big video premiere which was “you rock my world” starring Michael Jackson and Chris tucker. I remember it was a big deal because he haven’t dropped a video in a long time around that time
I remember those times well. The media announced the premiere of a new MJ video like it was the super bowl and everyone made sure to tune in! That never happened for any artist.
Michael Jackson is THE standard that's all no words needed🙌🙌👏
SMH, men at work is standard. The way one man hands another man a vegimite sandwitch made me cry.
😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
we thank michael jackson for that. the king of music videos. the greatest visual artist that ever lived.
The fact that that the MTV interviewer felt confident to give David Bowie that answer is shocking and disappointing...".we need to make our Mid West viewers comfortable???" The level of privilege is crazy. Big up David Bowie - True Ally! Amazing video also
I will never forget how hard David Bowie was side eyeing him as he was coming up with reasons not to play black artists! 😂😂
Once we entered the mid 2000s we kinda lost the art in music videos, and when Gaga came onto the scene she revolutionized and reshaped what it meant to make a music video and make it an art form. not a lot of people give her that credit because to them all they see is “weird” but she’s a literal genius and is the last remaining true Pop Icon.
There’s still newer artists that are able to do this do as well check out Normani‘s while you side music video or doechii Music video for crazy be warned for her music video though it is a lot but I love her radical energy
@@kait7404 agreed to disagree it does need time to age but I do feel like it will become iconic in time it was the social media craze that had everyone dancing I love the Aaliyah sample in the scene where she was dancing with herself was a work of art
Kylie Minogue is still very much alive as a pop icon as well.
@@thedancevalley2920 i think doechii, flo milli, chloe bailey, doja cat, and normani have what it takes to become true icons. i jus wish normani’s label would let her release her music and really let her career take off. she can dance, sing, do high notes, and is a really good talent/visionary but her label is holding her back, same thing is happening with SZA who’s been dominating with CTRL on the charts but it’s been 5 years her label needs to let her drop the next album so she can fully establish her status as a RnB Princess.
@@_Mateo_. Exactly they’re stunting her momentum when she has so much potential she just needs to release consistently I also hate that the label is holding back and Chloe‘s album as-well I like Chloe X Halle and Normani because I feel like we haven’t gotten a lot of black pop stars with that much artist development and PR training in awhile I can’t wait them grow throughout the years
The thriller mv scared tf outta me as a child and I was so confused when everybody jumped up and started dancing
My cousin was afraid too
the last scene made a mark on my psyche
@@pyrokatarina even though I was born in late 1999 that last bit is seared into my brain after my dad showed me. it was around the 2nd or 3rd video I’d ever seen too😅
@@AJ-pu9jq bro i was born in late 2001, were not so different I guess. And yes, it was also my dad who showed us the video because he's a huge MJ fan
_"many credit Jackson with opening the doors for more Black artists to be showcased on MTV"_ 👑
We need to remind some people how MJ Influence and how he revolutionized Music, Fashion, Dancing and Pop Culture #RIP 👑
the YTber doesn’t like Michael lol. she only included him because he’s necessary to the plot. If she could have done the video without him, she would have.
@@vee3177 Damn I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way. I felt she was avoiding mentioning him. It's strange.
He made white artist step their games up as well when it came to music videos
I really don’t like how a lot of people who did not grow up in the 80’s act like racism didn’t exist in the 80’s. They saw Stranger Things and assumed everything was perfect then and love to talk about the aesthetic of the 80’s. The reality is that there was a lot of racism in the 80’s and MTV refused to play black artists music videos until Michael Jackson. I’m glad that we have more channels like yours that speaks out on what really happened back then.
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker is a MUST watch.
the yellow eyes in Thriller scares the shit out of me TO THIS DAY. even now I can't watch this damn video. Michael the producers and the directors did an amazing job with this one.
Same it’s so creepy 😭
Oh my god I remember watching it as a kid with my siblings and would run out screaming seeing those eyes.
I think Soulja boy didn’t get enough credit for being one of the first artist to promote and popularize his song from UA-cam and MySpace. He broke down doors for a lot of artists to use the internet as an utensil to gain traction to their music.
No fr… he really revolutionized music in the internet age, and the idea of getting to stream. There’s a UA-cam video some hip hop account made a couple months ago detailing how big his impact was and I was amazed. Had me thinking back to my middle school days when 678-999-8212 was a number you could actually call 😭😭
@@naomi.cannibal Nah, the amount of times I tried calling the number😭😭
Soulja boy tell them
@@naomi.cannibal Got the link to that video by any chance?
Janelle Monae's Dirty Computer film was also an amazing visual experience! Really enhanced the album in my opinion
Thank you Michael Jackson....all artists should thank him for what he did 🙏
I personally think music videos would never go away , with film there’s always a story or subject to bring to them
Totally agree… visual arts aren’t going anywhere
Product placement was happening way back in the aughts with cellphones and iPods. Missy's ADIDAS endorsement was iconic. She was never not in a tracksuit. Hypnotiq was FREQUENTLY mentioned in song, featured in video and on Cribs. It was just a relatively new concept at that time so it didn't register as marketing.
Not the Hypnotiq 😭😭
@@naomi.cannibal Cristal, too!
Music videos was certainly a big deal for us especially seeing it on BET, VH1, and BET because it would tell a story. Also gave us these iconic looks like Crazy In Love and Toxic. It makes me miss 106 & Park, TRL, VH1’s Top 20 Countdown, Making The Video, and even Access Granted if y’all remember that show when they would do bts on their music videos before it premiered.
I LOVED Making the Video; seeing the process from inception to execution of a video I love was always the best time for me 🥲
Making the Video was sooo fun to watch!!
As a fan of MJ, Janet, Madonna, Beyoncé and Taylor swift I thank you for giving them their credits for the evolution of music videos, i espacially thank you for your shout out to Taylor swift people strangely don’t want to act like she isn’t a amazing and influential visionary/filmmaker in fact I recently got into it with one of my favorite youtubers Kim foster/for Harriet bc she said Taylor had no business winning video of the year at the recent VMA for all too well short film and her point for that was bc she preferred Harry styles and Doja cat but I made the point that all too well short film was the only nominee that had a massive global cultural impact and the quality of the video alone is generate for its win I mean when it was released back in November 2021 Taylor teamed up with AMC theaters to release the video on a worldwide scale for limited release and the tickets sold out and now it’s eligible to be nominated for best live action short for the 2023 Oscar’s/academy. (Side note: Kim end up blocking me and making her video private to paid members only bc she didn’t like the fact that her subscribers agreed with my point more and said Kim was wrong in her points lmaooo) but with Taylor there has been a cult like fandom to her visuals and I agree her golden era of music videos was definitely 1989, I still hate that folklore and evermore were released around the pandemic bc I only imagine if Taylor made a whole movie based on those two albums alone
She did what was possible at that time(Folklore and evermore era)...but still she gave 2 MVs...
@@yogshreephalke9072 right listening to folklore more than ever in the past 2 years really makes me think of how the visuals would be especially for exile, Betty, the great American dynasty etc
Now I love me some Kimberly Nicole but I didn’t agree with her take one bit. Taylor Swift consistently gives us innovative music videos… acting like otherwise is hating I’m sorry 😭 I think her videos really made me appreciate her music more tbh. And whether or not Taylor is for everyone that doesn’t mean her artistry isn’t undeniable
@@naomi.cannibal yes her All Too Well Short film which she directed herself is a ✨Masterpiece✨
@@naomi.cannibal true it’s amazing for me how she evolved with each era not just musically but visually as well to the point her videography definitely rivals her discography all too well short film is definitely a crowning achievement bc it she masters it as a mini film and the reception for it shows it deserves it VMA win
Yes, Michael Jackson's Thriller tore down the colour curtain. MTV ran with it (& obvs paid off) because they were struggling and we're just a few months from going bust. Hence MTV became synonymous with Michael Jackson TV lol
Its wild to me how Lana Del Rey has still never won a Grammy. Not even a VMA!. It's such a crime.. Though, she doesn't need a silly award to prove her artistry and impact.. Its sad to see others get that level of recognition and respect, that she too, very much deserves. She is due her flowers. In fact, they were due sooo long ago!
I love the Bowie interview and the MTV rep's response, and how that was completely contrasted by Michael Jackson's Thriller Short Film! My all time fave MV is either 'Spice Girls - Say You'll Be There' or 'Janet Jackson - The Pleasure Principle'.
His response had me shook..
@@naomi.cannibal Tina Turner always spoke highly of him, and said he introduced her to label execs at Capitol as he insisted he go see his 'Favourite singer'. He brought them along, which led to her major record deal an the Private Dancer album, and the rest is history.
@@Franniiv3 oh I meant the interviewer (I should’ve clarified better). Like he really said seeing a black person on TV would be scary to some Americans 😭
@@naomi.cannibal Oh I totally got what you were saying, I was also referring to the Bowie MTV interview you referenced in your Documentary:) With the interviewer's "Scared to death by Prince, or a String of other Black Faces" statement, shook! I was with Bowie "That's very interesting" He handled that much classier than I would have! It's like MJ thought, OH you want scary! I'll give you Thriller! xo
@@Franniiv3 oooooh I gotcha! And no fr he took that way more calmly than I could have ever
The example of JFK and Richard Nixon has to be the greatest example of the principle of this video. Excellent work as always.
Thank uuu, much appreciated! I remember learning about that in history class forever ago and it’s what I thought of while I was researching
I wish MTV would go back to airing Music Videos instead of shoving Ridiculousness down our throats. And I also miss 106 & Park. If BET would've found better hosts, the show would've been fine at least.
Yesss Michael credit, every other video just scoots over him like Thriller isnt THE video and he wasnt THE artist that changed it all. Your videos are superb!
We often overlook Michael Jackson's contribution for opening the door for Black Artists in mainstream 🙃
the fact that he never mention or brag this accomplishment but that man hates interview so yeah 😂
The only music video I was hoping to hear mentioned and didn't was "This is America." But you did an AMAZING job breaking down the different eras of music videos. A fantastic video essay!
Lady Gaga was a complete game changer in the music industry.
Only to a younger generation.
Fr I was in awe when I saw Bad Romance, Telephone and Paparazzi. It was too much for my 9-11 year old brain.
LOL no she wasn't. Literally everything Lady Gaga has ever done is a copy/paste amalgamation of artists who already did it first decades ago.
@@_Gilles_ this comment is completely useless because every artist will impact younger generations only because older ones are stubborn and aren’t welcoming to change, mj and madonna impacted a younger generation until that generation became old and that’s what will happen with gaga. Stop trying to discredit her
@@edselgreaves6503 I’ve never seen her copy anyone, are you sure or you just wanna spread misinformation?
It's crazy that music videos evolved from taped live performances to MTV to now being found on social media. Most music videos these days just don't have the same impact compared to the impact they had in the 80s.
You made me smile when you said Taylor swift has made some of the best music videos. She’s one of the greatest storytellers in music so it’s cool to see her get props from ppl outside of her dedicated fan base.
Yes!! I’m not a huge fan of her music but I do enjoy most of it and love her videos. I would go to a concert
@@naomi.cannibal LG has made way more iconic music videos
taylors videos are cookie cutter videos
@@alanmilo9742 Agreed! None of her music videos are new or interesting. They’re concepts that have been done before and aren’t revolutionary. They’re just popular because she’s popular for her mediocrity. You look at Janet, Michael, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Madonna and you see clear reasons why they’re music videos/films are considered artistic or revolutionary, her music videos are just boring already done concepts just with a bigger budget and always catering to teens and tweens.
@@SR-zv5ue I recommend her Out of the Woods music video, it's not as popular as most of them but it's amazing
I was shocked to hear scream was the most expensive production. I remember hearing that Gaga’s Judas cost 10m+ to make
Same, it seems like a simple vid but we can’t let the b&w fool us, it’s a lot going on esp w the vfx
Well, 10 million was probably cuz of its long-form or something if that's the case then it cost MJ 15 million for his Ghost short film music video in 1997.
Great video, Naomi! I’d argue music videos are not as popular as they once were. Not to say it’s not a needed medium. But I remember back in the day it was an EVENT when a major artist premiered a video. I don’t get the same level of importance these days.
Completely agree they’re less popular. I think it’s bc we have sooo many other ways to see our faves artists now. I do think they’re making a “comeback” tho
@@naomi.cannibal right! You can just see them on social media lol. Good point on they’re making a comeback
it became less popular due to the emergence of spotify and other streaming platforms. Before the streaming era, youtube was like the only place where you can listen to what you desire, plus the benefit of a music video and the UA-cam community. But now the majority would much prefer to just look for Playlists in spotify to listen nonstop while doing other things or to see what's new in the market.
MJ is the creator of music video there was no music videos before MJ
One artist who may not have had a big impact with her videos but who, in my opinion, consistently produces some of the greatest music videos in history is Björk. She’s miles ahead of everyone else artistically speaking
Don’t think this generation know who Bjork is.
I'm glad you touched on discrimination inside the music industry as it's so relevant to the topic of videos/distribution. I thought I'd know most of these details, but I learned a lot! Honorable mentions: Doja Cat's "Moo" video and Halsey's short film scored by music from IICHLIWP. Overall nice work!
Omg yesssni loved Halseys film! I wish more people appreciated her as an artist. Yes she’s absolutely meme worthy but she does make good music
Congrats to your sponsor 🎉. Music videos used to be such a big deal and event back in the day. Music videos brought so much anticipation to viewers at home that you couldn’t miss out on it.
Thank you!!! And I know, a music video dropping used to be a MOMENT
Dirty Computer by Janelle Monet is a serious masterpiece of a film + a visual album
It is and I’m mad at myself I didn’t think to include it
THANK YOU !!! It’s one of my favorites!!
I would add something to Madonna's. She may not be the absolute greatest vocalist but she is GOOD. She showcases her vocals really well on songs like Live to tell, Oh father, Bad girl, Rain, Take a Bow, Frozen, The Power of Goodbye etc.
Good point! You have to be able to still somewhat sing to get away with not being the “best” singer
@@naomi.cannibal Madonna is probably one of the smartest women in this industry. She's become a Legend and have so much impact in music and fashion without being a great singer or the best dancer or songwriter but she did a LOT with the things God gave her. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
What you said about being able to appreciate someone as a performer all around, not just vocals is spot on. I feel the best artist are ones who can perform and let you forget the world while you're watching them.
For sure, most artists i enjoy its bc of the atmosphere they make with their music rather than just the vocals specifically
thanks to the one and only Michael Jackson… the kind of pop/ music 🤍🤍🤍 I’ve loved him since I was a child :D
Oh my gosh, I loved VH1 and their 'Pop Up Videos' too! It definitely gave me life as a 4th grader watching videos like 'Strip' by Adam Ant. Also congratulations on the sponsor Naomi!
Thank youuu!! And pop up video was my jaaam
I still do love that some Artists posts A Teaser for the music video building up anticipation and a little sneak peak.Music Videos completely add a different perspective from the artists and the music video will compliment the music itself.
I love Zayn’s music videos. From his solo debut with Pillowtalk I’ve always loved his experimentalism. His Icarus Falls era videos give that short film vibe & follows a story. He’s not a conventional artist in the sense that doesn’t perform his music much so I enjoy the fact that his artistry shows so much in his music videos.
All I wanna say is.. *kanye
Mic grab* is that Mariah Carey has deserved a moon man for YEARS.
Speak on it!🔥🎶🎶

Honestly music videos will always have a special place in my heart. I remember when we first got cable. One of the 1st channels that I found was MTV and I was obsessed. And I think truly a lot of music videos have gone on to influence like iconic pop culture moments for sure.
Yes I wish MTV and vh1 still only played music videos. As I child I loved watching the videos with my mum..
Saaaame, MTV and VH1 have been pivotal to me liking music and pop culture as much as I do

This was so comprehensive!
12:16 A note about Thriller on MTV, previously the channel argued that they'd featured Black artist Herbie Hancock's video Rock It (which was banging!!!) But critics pointed out that the video didn't have any people; so No *Black faces* on screen. THAT'S when MTV relented and featured MJ. The rest is history, which you've presented very well!
I didn’t know this, thank you!
The Weeknd definitely has had a big impact on music videos lately
I’ve loved music videos since I was a child. I was never into films but music videos give me the satisfying balance of watching a short film and hearing music. They’re still some great ones but a lot are just high key commercials now with some music.
Madonna actually has a nice tone but does not always focus on technique . In Evita you can see how she sounds once she focuses on technique.
I always say Madonna could’ve a much better vocalist if she wasn’t inconsistent with her technique the 90s still remain proof of her vocalist potential

I feel like a lot of people look down on Britney today and she doesn’t get a lot of the credit she deserves today she was a real star and everywhere in the early 2000s (they don’t make stars like that anymore) dare I say she was almost on a Michael Jackson level back then
I enjoyed this video so much! Would love to watch one that's kpop focused as well! Loving your channel!
It's clearly that you put a lot of work an research in this video! I really liked it! 💜 I hope that you'll also do the K-Pop version soon, because K-Pop MVs have so much to offer, and I bet the history behind it must be really interesting. I'm looking forward to it!! ✨️
Good video. One thing glossed over was how thinly spread music videos were on early MTV leading to weirder new wave getting a lot more play than it would on radio and starting the golden age of one hit wonders.
I would love to watch a video of you talking about the evolution of kpop videos! But I really enjoyed this video as well ☺️
I love your videos seem like I'm in a class or something. Music videos are a way for artist to promote their music. So they'll always be around & talked about. I can tell your research. You went all the way back to JFK days. Great video...!!
Thank you!! And I try to connect things when I can, after all pop culture reflects society/ history in such a huge way
Give it to David Bowie to call MTV out for not playing black artists! He’s nothing but class too.

like i’m boutta stream sims (no cam/mic, so it’s just the gameplay) & i always put something on to actually consume in the back. this is the perfect content. i can glance at the visuals without missing a visual story bc it’s mostly through audio.. but i love being ABLE to glance down and see matching visuals. y’know? it’s just perfect ok-
I get you!! A lot of the UA-camrs I love make content like that where I can treat it like a podcast if I want. It’s always nice
Just found you and I'm hooked!! Keep it up girl!!
Congrats naomi you did such an amazing job with this video essay! I think you summarize it very well touching all the main points and choosing the best examples. The only thing I would have added is a mention to Marina and the diamonds/Marina for the concept of a visual album with Electra Heart released in 2012. She is a contemporary of Lana and inspired artists like Melanie Martinez. I feel like she is usually forgotten because is not that famous but I swear she was big on tumblr at that time and created a perfect imagery for that album. She was THAT committed to the project her label went bankrupt.
I loveeeee marina! I always wish I could include every artist in a video but it’s just not feasible. Thanks so much for watching 💕
I love how many times you put the supremes in this they’re one of my favorite groups of all time!
As a kid of the nineties, I remember most of this VIVIDLY. Since this was so much of what I consumed as a child who loved singing/music, the current state of popular culture is a DIRECT result of what we were fed as children. And by the way I used to watch Janet’s rhythm nation video/in the tshirt from the concert that was gifted to me RELIGIOUSLY. Missy’s ‘I can’t stand the rain’ BLEW my baby mind, and I also loved Pop-Up Video. We lived through (and grew up during) a true evolution of the music/entertainment industry. For better or worse💜.

@@naomi.cannibal Can you discuss the catfights among girlbands not only from the US but also UK, I would very much like to hear about Little Mix, Fifth Harmony, Sugababes, Destiny's child, etc. We hear a lot about women supporting each other but sometimes the reality doesn't support that statement.
