In episode 69 of Whisky in SV, I did a blind tasting of one of the most hyped up whiskies of the year so far: the Ben Holladay 18 Barrel Blended Bourbon from the Bourbon Lore group. I had never heard of Ben Holladay until their bottles started showing up at my local craft liquor store a few months ago. So, when a friend of mine sent me a link and told me to buy this bottle, I was hesitant to pay the 1.3 Benjamins that were being requested to get this unknown 7 year whisky from Missouri to my door. Finally, being a degenerate, I took the plunge, and my only regret is that I did not buy more! After the purchase, it took a couple of weeks for me to get the bottle and I saw bourbon-tube give universally glowing reviews with talks of this being the best bourbon of the year already! Naturally, I was very skeptical because most of the reviews I saw had acquired the bottle for free and no matter how much I would like to say otherwise, in my heart of hearts, I think there is a difference between reviewing a bottle you got for free versus one you spent your own hard-earned cash on. Anyway, I finally got to try this today and I have to say that I was definitely pleasantly surprised at how complex and interesting it is. Now, it is no 13th Colony Double Oaked or 15th Anniversary, but for the asking price, it is excellent value. I think you would probably have to spend North of 2 Benjis to get a similar experience (for example from an Old Carter). Terrific review! I just found this whisky and my husband and I are enjoying it. We have only had a couple of drams! Whisky is to be opened, shared and enjoyed! Life is too short to try and make a big fortune on collecting IMO! Seriously! Cheers! :-)
