Great to see this test! I did a 10% challenge of my own with my MS Plaid on 19” wheels without the aero covers, I got a 157 mile bump on the 15 minute timer. My test wasn’t as strict, so the highway speeds varied from 70 to 85. I’m more than happy with the roadtripping practicality of it. Great value and speed for the money and no complaints on the trip convenience.
The Model S Plaid is still the king, all things considered - performance, price, autonomous driving, range, charging capability, practicality etc. It does everything extremely well.
Performance in a straight line is good but brakes die on the spot w/o track pack Price is not cheap considering the insane pricing of new Chinese EVs(we're comparing vehicles, not how much you can get them for in the US, other countries exist) Tesla has a really good ADAS, better than most if not all(when it works), but it's not autonomous driving Range wise I agree, Tesla's magical efficiency is, well, magical Charging capability is decent but falls way behind when compared to more innovative EVs like those on 800V architecture. Lucid, Porche, and the HKG's E-GMP platform all out-charge Teslas. I'm not sure what exactly you mean by practicality, but it's a car that can be driven, has the trunk space of a sedan, not much more you can ask for. I like Teslas(less so Elon), but I cannot stand for people blindly gushing praise at things that are not true. The Model SP definitely has a very nice package and well-roundedness, but "extremely well" might be overstating it a little, especially given that Tesla seems to have given up on innovation(in favor of pumping stocks with the vague promise of actual FSD) and getting slowly overtaken by other manufacturers. I don't mean this as a "slam dunk", if there's anything I got wrong, please feel free to correct me on it.
@ihamptonii I'd recommend looking for a 2022+ with the matrix headlights. They upgraded brake pads and stuff too. I got mine from a private seller. Overpaid a bit but it was a year ago - $76K with full PPF, ceramic coated, tint, 2 sets of wheels and FSD fully paid for. Now my spec would go for low to mid 60s.
@CielMC the Plaid did the Nurburgring faster than the C8 Corvette - hardly "only good in a straight line". It corners great for what it is. No it's not a GT3 RS, but it's one of the fastest sedans from the factory ever to run on a track. They did improve the brakes for 2022+, and of course you could always get the track pack and get carbon ceramic brakes, which are fantastic. Probably worth it if you're actually tracking the car regularly. It's not just a trunk, its a large liftback- much more usable space than something like a Lucid Air or a Porsche Taycan. FSD as of late is amazing. The improvements have been rapid, and it now handles like 99% of situations without intervention. Also the software is second to none, its got streaming videos on the rear screen with dual Bluetooth headphones support (great family car), it has summon and smart summon... yeah you can find cars that are better in one single aspect or another, but the Model S Plaid is the total package.
Thanks for taking the time ! If I got a Plaid would shoe it w/ 19" wheels - nice to see a 10% with that . Much better than EPA for real world results ! In the real world TSLA crushes
Thanks for the Video! I absolutly love watching Out of Spec videos from Germany.🇩🇪 😊 Only thing I suggest and would like to see is you adding the Wh/km figure as a little „blend-in“ for everyone watching from the rest of the world 🙃
Very nice results. Would love to see what a fresh LR MS would do. I like the size and flexibility of the S, but the price needs to come down to reflect reality and I think it would sell better. The glitchy behavior you guys have seen in the races with this car gives more than a few reasons to pause.
You have to keep in mind that this particular Model S Plaid has not been taken care of as normal people treat their expensive vehicles. This was bought by Kyle to do all sorts of tests with and to put it through hardships that other people never put their cars through. It's been dragged raced often. It's been on several long races and taken below 0% SoC many times, then charged only to 50% only to take it below 0% again. Even on his normal road trips with it, Kyle likes to charge it only to 50 or 60% and then drive it to as close to 0% as possible. No normal person does that. This is also a car with over 1,000 horses and over a 1,000 lb-ft of torque. How many ICE cars do you know that have that kind of power other than so called "supercars" costing many hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. How many of those owners abuse those cars like this? And you wonder why it has had some glitches? And want to pay less for this kind of power when I just told you how much the ICE versions of cars with this type of power cost?
@@junehanzawa5165 If you want a Plaid then pay the extra bucks. But a regular Model S should be much more affordable. Agreed this car has been ridden hard and hung up wet. Not a good example any more for these tests given all it has been through. I hope they get some other examples of the MS for testing.
@Longsnowsm Well, the Models S with 402 miles of range that does 0-60 in 3-1 seconds starts at $74,990. It still has over 500 horses and over 500 lb-ft of torque. So you will have to compare that price with other sedans, or any other vehicle, with that kind of power and range and see what those cost. Can you think of any? You can buy the Model X with 329 miles of range that does 0-60 in 3.8 seconds for a little less at $72,490, because it qualifies for the $7,500 rebate.
Agreed! Miles per minute makes sense for DC EVSE. Reasonable people don’t charge for hours (if going to 80% or less). My Chevy Bolt EUV takes 1 hr 28 minutes to from 0% to 80%. 43 mins 5% to 55% which rides to best part of charging curve. Other EV driver have no excuse not to be done in minutes.
One metric they should track is cost per mile during this test. A slower charging car that is extremely efficient will save a lot of money over time especially with DC charging prices being quite high.
@@aravindhravi2307 many post on the tesla motor club website showing plaids wh/mi same or lower than the long range. It really is close. I will give the LR a better wh/mi but nothing to brag about. We are talking 5-10 difference.
Tire widths? >265 rear?? M3P on square 235's (dropping 275s) gains ~13%, per recent OOS testing. Plaid first came out when most MS's were 245 square. I wouldn't hesitate to run that setup and wonder if similar range gains?
At 80, it really seems like that frontal area is the main efficiency driver. CD is great and all, but at those speeds, just staying small matters. Gonna really destroy the trucks as you get more of them tasted in this test. I know you get these speeds on cross country travel, but man i wish I could hold 80 more on our highways, i kinda feel the speeds are a little on the high end to be representative on my more local road trips.

@@CielMC I just bought a used Plaid with 16k miles for $51k. There is nothing remotely close in terms of performance for that price.

43kWh added in 15 minutes. That's an average charging speed of 172kW. Pretty amazing.
Another great test and video Ryan. Thanks for taking the time and doing all the hard work it takes to do it.

Is there a link where we can see all of the data for the 10% challenge?
That's very impressive for the old girl 😂😂
Really impressive work, Ryan!
Thank you!
Charging like a boss. Did not know solitaire was an option. Another reason my to upgrade. That's very good efficiency for 80 mph at 55 degrees.

Curious to see what Tesla can achieve with 800v on their next models, they are already one of the better charging 400v cars

Why 15 minutes? Is that how long is a typical gas station stop?
it is generally 10 minutes for filling up but 15 is not far off
Should run it through a car wash before filming. That thing is DIRTY.
that's what she said.
