Great tips! Thanks!
Thanks so much for your help. All my worked ended up in a complete mess due to me applying too much paint at once. The brush strokes were ridiculously obvious. I was really to give up trying again. X
Glad I could help! Best of luck with your project.
THANK YOU! Went through a ridiculous amount of videos with SO much unneeded information until I FINALLY found you!!!! To the point and useful!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
THANK YOU! I have been struggling. I have tried sprayers, rollers…. This makes perfect sense, now I can actually finish all my furniture projects 🙏😂👍
Thank you! This tip was AMAZING!!!!!!!... I saw this video yesterday and tried it and it worked great! You just helped me save my item.
Yay, Jo! I’m so happy it helped you.
OMG!!! This was fabulous advice. I used it to varnish my tabletop and it works perfectly! Need to do more coats, but it dries faster to be re-coated faster! Will use this to do my doors AND my kitchen cabinets that will be chalk painted.... THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

This was soo helpful thank you!! I’m in San Francisco CA - I’ll be watching!!
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. And thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing. I have been refinishing (stripping, varnishing, painting) for 50 years and have recently been introduced to chalk paint (which I also love). While I love chalk paint, it is thick and paintbrush strokes are problematic (yes, I too do not like brush strokes). This technique is the next best thing to spraying with compressor. Now I can achieve -- almost - the same results without spraying. You are my hero!!!!
Oh my goodness how did I miss your comment. Yay! I hope this answered a few questions you may have had. I’d love to know the results you got with this method.
Great tip ive been stuggling with how to stop brush strokes thankyou.
You’re very welcome. 🙂
Thank you for this! You make it so easy to undersatnd!
Yay! I'm so happy to help. Happy painting! :)
I started my first furniture flip and I made the mistake of painting it on thick! I definitely have burst strokes in my furniture 😩. It’s a learning curve though and I’m sure it’ll get better! Thank you for this advice! Definitely going to try it
Yes, practice makes perfect. Happy painting. ❤️
I did this too! Just did a rocking chair :( it’s my first ever project
Game Changer!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I’m having to switch to brush instead of spray for kitchen cabinets and was trying different thinning levels on the backs of the doors today to figure out the best consistency, will be adding the sprayer tomorrow
Very nice. Cabinets are a huge job. We recently did our and they turned out great.
Hi Do Dodson Design. I followed your instructions for the avoidance of brush strokes. I love it but I had an unexpected result which I find very cool. Wish I could add a picture to this comment. Apparently I used too much water and the result was a mottled finish. I used ordinary latex paint and the outcome is stunning. Also, no brush strokes. Thanks so much. Frank Taylor
That is fantastic, Jeff! I love unexpected wins. You can email the pic at donna@dododsondesigns
I would love to see. Thanks so much for sharing your findings.
Just now found this video and wish I had found it sooner. I so custom furniture painting and this would have been so helpful! From now on I know what to do! Thank you
😧Me too.

Thank you! I can't wait to try this technique out tomorrow!

I even painted for a living for a while and have never heard of this trick.
Thank You that was a great help!
Oh good! I’m glad I could help.
thanks for sharing🌸
THANK YOU!!!!!!
Oh boy, do I ever have a lot of work to do with this technique!
Great tips
I was wondering if you can spray acrylic milk paint as well to do this same process. I loved your video it's a great help to me as a beginner at furniture painting
🤔 I don’t know. I would reach out to the paint company of the acrylic paint and ask them. They will know for sure. Good luck! I’d love for you to follow me on my blog too. Sign up for my free weekly tutorials here. www.dododsondesigns.com/
I’m wanting to paint an old pie safe that was my Mother’s and I’m thinking that want to do it with a brush and I want a flat finish so what do you recommend as for what kind of paint to use ? Thank you for the tips I’m definitely going to try this .
Yes, Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint is a matte finish. It dries super hard and doesn’t need a top coat. Here’s a link to their website where you can find lots of colors. dixiebellepaint.com?aff=80
@@DoDodsonDesigns thank you I can’t wait to get it done ! 😊
This is a great video.
Glad it’s helpful. ❤️
Thank you for posting this video. I'm going to be using your advice, if you don't mind me asking ,What colour paint is the one you used? It looks beautiful!
Hi Angela! This color is called Tea Rose and it's gorgeous. You can find it here through my affiliate link. dixiebellepaint.com/tea-rose-chalk-paint/?aff=80 Happy painting! :)
Does this work with latex paint too?
Thank you! When I've rubbed over darker colors - like Bunker Hill Blue - it leaves a dull cast to the area and takes away from the vibrancy of the color. Is there a step I'm missing?
Kimberlee Roberts this can happen with darker colors. To avoid this, try using less water with your last coat and then lightly sand when it’s dried.
@@DoDodsonDesigns Thank you! :)
Do you think this technique will work on plywood? I'm having some trouble. My paint is not chalk its latex
No. I don’t recommend you using this technique with latex paint. Sorry. 🙂
So have you tried this with a high gloss paint? Because flat paint is pretty much the go to when it comes to hiding imperfections.
This technique only works with chalk mineral paint. Not latex paints.
Hello. Can this work with Acrylic paint too or is this only good for chalk paint?
I wouldn’t recommend this technique with acrylic paint.
Question? I already have a piece that has been painted with the chalk paint and it’s dry. If I go over this like above, will the chalk paint that’s already on there give any and blend or will this just remain as is and will my current paint job like above cover this? I hope you understand as it was a little hard to explain. Thank you! Your explanation is perfect! I’ve actually painted a cabinet that I hung in my laundry room that I did similar, however, I didn’t think about using water and instead just added more paint. I guess I lucked out and got rid of the brush marks showing but it wasn’t easy.
👍 yes, you should be fine. Keep in mind that chalk paint is commonly sealed with wax. Not all wax finishes can be painted over with out removing. Wax repels water. I’d do a test area first. Good luck and happy painting. 🙂
Fortunately I haven’t added any wax or sealers to this yet so I thank you for your comment and will give it a try.
What about for oil based paints, would you still use water?
No, oil and water will not mix.
@@DoDodsonDesigns Okay thanks. Any suggestions on how to avoid brushstrokes with an oil based paint?
@@user-fp1hs3mf8f No. Sorry, I only use water base paints. Good luck.
Can this technique minimize brush strokes with latex paint as well, or does this only work with chalk paint? Thanks!
This will only work with chalky based paints.
Pls tell me the spray item name
Where did you buy the mister?
Sorry about that. Here ya go. affiliate amzn.to/2tOGzCW
I see in the comments that you recommend this only for chalk mineral paint. I've heard of chalk paint, (e.g., Annie Sloan, etc.) but never chalk mineral paint. Are those two different things? Thank you!
Yes, they are both forms of chalk paint but this technique works best with chalk mineral paint. You can learn more about the paint here. Affiliate. dixiebellepaint.com?aff=80
@@DoDodsonDesigns Thanks. I'm not in the US so can't get this brand of paint. I tihnk I'll try your water misting technique with the chalk paint that I do have access to and hope for the best.
is that,natural or plastic bristols?????
A good quality synthetic bristle brush work the best with this technique. Brushes make all the difference.
Dixie belle paint is an ACRYLIC based paint.
Isn't acrylic the same as water base?
@@joellelong4795 Dixie Belle's paint is water-based. I cannot say what the ingredients are, as I'm pretty sure that's a secret. However, it works well with this not brush stroke method. Happy painting! :)
So this is for chalk paint only...you should have included this in the title. Such as How to Chalk Paint Furniture Without Brush Strokes.
You all should use a sprayer just saying
ADD: NEVER put WATERED BRUSH INTO CHALK PAINT CONTAINER. You just tainted it and it WILL STINK!
Yes, that’s why I add the paint to a different container while painting.
I rather stick with my sprayer. I have no patience .
