Very well explained - thanks so much! I'm not the most mechanically inclined person in the world, but it's time to learn because there's no way I'm paying what I was just quoted for this job...
I have a 2018 Caravan sxt. I know many people talk bad about dodge and their vans but i love mine!! Leather seats. STRONG engine. Easiy to maintain. Drives fine for its size. Isnt the most refined car however for daily famiy life and work its great! 140,000 miles on mine and time to replace front struts
Awesome vehicles!!! We have a 2007 grand Caravan SXT. It truly is one of the best cars we have ever owned. And we have had many. This thing is incredible. Still going strong at 180,000 miles in 15 years in the harsh Pennsylvania climate
Never thought much of Dodge/Chrysler but I bought a used 2008 T&C and turned it into a minicamper and drove it through some of the worst conditions, a lot of semi-offroad (meant for 4×4s only) driving while exploring the edge of civilization and this thing has been a champ! We got her at 187k and have had to replace a few minor things but she's still running strong at 253k..now, on to these struts.
That's what we like to hear!! And hopefully we were able to save you a few hundred dollars along to way too! Thanks for the great video! Very clear and concise. I especially loved the "but I'm doing the other side" part. I have noticed that a lot of how-to videos pick the easier side and leave it at that...then you're off other places in the middle of a tear down trying to figure out what to do next. Thanks again!
Nice to know that part is appreciated!! If we're doing both sides on a job we'll always try to film both sides and outline the differences (which there often are!) I did this repair today. Thanks so much for the guidance! Different to the instructions in the video, I used a Torx bit in the middle of the stud for the anti-roll bar links to prevent it rotating and it worked a treat. Also one should expect a fair bit more difficulty in removing the aft upper strut bolts on the driver's side as the windshield wiper linkage is in the way. The sizes of all the bolts were 100% as described and the video gives a great overview of what is required. Thanks again @youwrench for taking the time and effort to film this.

Pro tip: OK not from me, but I watched the windshield guys just rock the windshield wipers loose after taking out the bolt. I had no Idea and always fought them like everyone else, was slick. Good video, thank you!
Nice video. Was part of my FYI research for replacing my struts to make sure there wasn't something funny with these. Replaced both front struts and sway bar links today and both rear shocks with zero issues. I was happy that my replacement struts were like OEM with set holes not lower slots like ones in the video so it does not have a camber alignment that's needed. Since I didn't touch the tierods, no wheel alightment required. Took it for a test drive and it drove straight as an arrow!
Brilliant! Every other video of this task said you had to remove the wipers. I tried to gain access to the top of the struts as recommended in this video and it was ridiculously easy, just as shown. Thanks for sparing of me of needless effort and time.

I was just quoted like 1200 dollars to do this work, while my parts place has struts for 90 each ! 180 and maybe 150 for alignment, is way better than 1200. Conceptually, I knew it was easy, BUT, I wanted to verify that. Odd that that upper bolt can't be marked and re-used to hold teh alignment. THanks !

Hi, this is an excellent detailed video.. great job! I purchased the same struts for my Grand Caravan and after installing my front sits significantly higher....like 2 inches higher than rear. So I replaced the old rear shocks with Monroe OEspectrum hoping it would help balance it out a bit but the front still sits way too high. Its also very noticeable when stepping into the vehicle. Did you have this problem with your van also?
Thank you! They will generally sit a little high upon install, but they *should* level off fairly quickly (i.e. a few days of driving). It could be a slight combination of your old ones sitting a little lower than they should (due to age/wear, or especially if you had a snapped spring!), and the new ones sitting a little high so the visual difference is 'doubled' (if that makes sense). On this car, they were notably sitting a little high on install (but I wouldn't say two inches!!!) but looking at the car recently the suspension now looks nice and even all around so they definitely have levelled off. Springs will settle, and so it's common to sit a little high immediately upon install to allow them to bed in. If they were at the 'bedded in' height immediately then chances are they would sag to be too low relatively quickly as the spring settles. The non factory replacements are probably just a little bit longer than the original and also longer than exact replacements. I saw another video on this (Scotty Kilmer) where he measured them side by side and found the difference. Not a problem really unless you just don't want the extra height. The main thing I would focus on is the replacement is sure a whole lot better than the original if the original was worn out. Exact replacements are also like over $700.00 each for some cars!!
Awesome video sir. Was wondering what "symptoms" you were having to make you replace strut. I have a loud rattle/clunk noise over every single little imperfection in the pavement.
Thank you! This strut was replaced due to a broken spring. --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! When tightening the strut mount bolts (x3 bolts), should this be done once the wheels are loaded and touching the ground ( k=0)? Or perhaps they should be tightened first, and then torqued once wheels are touching the ground? Thank you

This is fairly common these days with various bolts all over your car. It is a way of ensuring proper 'stretch' in the bolt, and tends to be a little more 'accurate' than just doing it by torque value, hence the manufacturers often prefer to do it that way. This spec is direct from the Dodge workshop manual. Hope that helps! --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! The instant the wheel is free of the bottom strut bolts, it will want to fall outward under its own weight. If it's allowed to fall freely, it will pull the drive axle out of its spline...then you've got a real problem on your hands...that's going to be a tow to a shop. Removing the axel nut will allow the wheel to fall off freely without pulling the axle with it. However, what did (just this afternoon) was to put my jack under the brake disk (put a rag under the disk to cushion it) and use the jack to lift its weight up so it wouldn't fall.

Can you explain a bit why you gave the lower mounting bolts an additional 90 degrees of turn AFTER getting to the specified torque setting? Wouldn't that significantly over-torque the bolts?
Hey there! Yes, actually this is very common, for all makes and models of cars. This torque spec is taken directly from the Dodge workshop manual. It's to do with bolt stretch, and also torque wrenches tend to be more accurate in the lower to mid ranges, and can be damaged if you over torque them. So the idea if to torque to the spec, and ideally the remaining 90 degree's would be done on a breaker bar (if likely to be outside of the maximum range of the torque wrench). Possibly, but it's really not required. There's plenty of space on both sides to get your hand and wrench in there. TBH, not really. They tend to be the cheaper and more generic solutions that are available. The Grand Caravan/T&C is hardly a great handling car to begin with, so not sure how big the improvements would actually be handling-wise even if there was something available. Good video... but people the Caravan is a front heavy vehicle... do yourself a favour and don't buy the cheapest strut assembly, get yourself something OEM or better. You don't want to do this every year.
No, you should find that there is no flexibility during the install as the main bolt locks the angle in one direction, and then the second bolt passes through the slot and cannot move up and down the slot, and the movement in the other direction is locked by the width of the hole. However, the oval does ALLOW for camber adjustment, but you will need special bolts (camber adjustment bolts) if you want to change the camber position. Without the special bolts the position will be locked (not adjustable, or certainly not as easy to adjust). All that said, you should expect to have to do at least a wheel alignment after changing major suspension components (as outlined in the video). Yes, I agree on materials. Some of the materials (but not all!) used on these are terrible. Hose spring clamps immediately come to mind, we've had lots of those cause coolant leaks by losing their ability to clamp. You open up the spring clamp and it just snaps in half. Complete garbage. BUT you need to remember that these cars were pretty (comparitively) cheap to buy brand new, and you do sometimes get what you pay for. But those clamps really annoy me, costing people hundreds of dollars in repairs to save what, 5c a clamp? Just add $5 to the price of the car and put decent clamps on it!! --- To help support us (for both you and others reading this) there are a few things you can do: 1) Donations both needed and welcome! Can you please tell me how you like the auto shack shocks. Is the height ok. They’re the cheapest ones I can find. But I’m curious how they will fit and work.
never get spring and strut replacements unless it OEM factory. I made that mistake once. IT NEVER RODE THE SAME. it was spongy. sat differently. i'd rather get a reload and compress the factory spring. only a little more work but it's worth it

Thank you so much for making this video. I performed this repair today on my Town & Country. Your procedures worked perfectly.
That's what we like to hear!! And hopefully we were able to save you a few hundred dollars along to way too! Any support always welcome! www.paypal.me/youwrench

If we're doing both sides on a job we'll always try to film both sides and outline the differences (which there often are!) Like yourself, we feel it's an important aspect and a better experience for our viewers (who may be doing both sides too!). Thanks for your support!

Much easier than anticipated - thank you!!
I did this repair today.
Really glad to hear you managed to get the job done, and thank you for your kind words and support! 🙂

I see that the bottom fastener slot of the strut allows for camber adjustment and the factory one that's been removed does not. Cam bolts?

What is the brand of struts you used?
A Extremely helpful and thorough video!
Brilliant! Every other video of this task said you had to remove the wipers. I tried to gain access to the top of the struts as recommended in this video and it was ridiculously easy, just as shown. Thanks for sparing of me of needless effort and time.
Awesome video! You came out with this just in time to replace my own struts!

Great video. Great angles. Nice work saving the time not taking off the wipers. What a hassle that would be!
THanks !

Subscribed! Awesome video. If I lived in your town, I'd bring all of my auto repair work to You Wrench. Saved me a ton of time and cash. I had Shops quote $1,500 to $1,700 to replace front struts and rear shocks. I purchased:
$302 Monroe struts & shocks (Amazon)
$65 Craftsman torque wrench (Sears)
$85 Floor jack 2 1/4 ton and Jack stand combo (Auto-zone)
$807 set of 4 Goodyear tires and front end alignment. (Action Gator Tire)
Total $1,259
Basically got a free set of Goodyear tires and saved $441 by doing it myself with You Wrench's help. ✌

Very good video very detailed 👍 great job😊
Keep us posted!

Exact replacements are also like over $700.00 each for some cars!!
see my reply above. NEVER get spring/strut combo's they will always ride differently. reload it yourself using the factory OEM springs
Thx for this great installation video. Question: where can i buy 3” Lift kit for 2010 Ram Grand Caravan and do you have a video on this. Thx again.
Excellent instruction! Thank you. By chance, will you ever sell t-shirts? Your logo is great.
Awesome video sir. Was wondering what "symptoms" you were having to make you replace strut. I have a loud rattle/clunk noise over every single little imperfection in the pavement.
Thank you! This strut was replaced due to a broken spring.

If the sway bars are original then you may as well replace them too. Here in the Rust Belt, they have to be cut off anyway
I've done this many times.
Today, I could not get the top bolt out. I've been beating on the bolt with a 5lb sledge, it won't budge! Tomorrow, I'll try a 10lb sledge.
Wasn't sure how or where to message this...for future vids, any chance you could do on one where the jack points are on 2013 dodge grand caravan for floor jacks and jack stands?

What mileage is recommended to change your struts? I feel like my van with 128k is due for them
When tightening the strut mount bolts (x3 bolts), should this be done once the wheels are loaded and touching the ground ( k=0)? Or perhaps they should be tightened first, and then torqued once wheels are touching the ground? Thank you
Very good job thanks

Hi, can you explain the purpose of torquing the lower strut mount bolts, and then adding a 90 degree turn?
This is fairly common these days with various bolts all over your car. It is a way of ensuring proper 'stretch' in the bolt, and tends to be a little more 'accurate' than just doing it by torque value, hence the manufacturers often prefer to do it that way. This spec is direct from the Dodge workshop manual. Hope that helps!

Some other how to videos showed removing the wheel axle nut. Is there a reason you didn't remove?
The instant the wheel is free of the bottom strut bolts, it will want to fall outward under its own weight. If it's allowed to fall freely, it will pull the drive axle out of its spline...then you've got a real problem on your hands...that's going to be a tow to a shop. Removing the axel nut will allow the wheel to fall off freely without pulling the axle with it. However, what did (just this afternoon) was to put my jack under the brake disk (put a rag under the disk to cushion it) and use the jack to lift its weight up so it wouldn't fall.
Bonjour, merci pour vos vidéos, elle sont très intéressantes?? À quel endroit je peux savoir ou obtenir le torque de chacune des boulons nous avons à serrer sur nos véhicules??
Merci à pour votre attention.
I just priced these out yesterday at $260 USD. EACH. For the KYB
Please try using the Amazon links in the descriptive text (also below for you) as explained in the video. USD $182 PER PAIR (CAD $264 PER PAIR). Around 1/3 of the price of the ones you priced up. LINKS HERE: USA: amzn.to/3gV1B8B Canada: amzn.to/3yFFNDY

Do both wheels need to be off the ground to do this repair?
Thanks!

Hope that makes some sense!! :-)

Would turning on the wipers and then stopping them in the upright position by removing the ignition key help with the cowl flexibility?
Possibly, but it's really not required. There's plenty of space on both sides to get your hand and wrench in there. Access is actually pretty nice on the Grand Caravan for the top of the strut.

Any feedback on how these struts that you linked are performing? Worth the price?
Actually they're pretty good. No issues with them at all. I don't suspect that they would last as long as the genuine ones, but they are a fraction of the price. For the price these offer excellent value. Hope that helps.
I need to do this job on my 2014 Grand Caravan Crew.
What are your thoughts/impression of those aftermarket struts now that you’ve had them on for 6 months? Worth the savings?

With aftermarket strut assembly it's hit or miss sometimes they are so bad that the old struts are better
I have a 2017 Dodge grand caravan bought it with 75,000 miles on it. Its been a Huge Huge headache sense then.
You're not the first person to mention that. These can be troublesome, thankfully parts are relatively cheap 👍

In your search for struts for this van, did you see any upgrades?
Anything to improve the handling?
TBH, not really. They tend to be the cheaper and more generic solutions that are available. The Grand Caravan/T&C is hardly a great handling car to begin with, so not sure how big the improvements would actually be handling-wise even if there was something available. We're a long way off of sports car handling here ;-)

Good video... but people the Caravan is a front heavy vehicle... do yourself a favour and don't buy the cheapest strut assembly, get yourself something OEM or better. You don't want to do this every year.
But wait whats up with the bottom bolt the hole is oval! So you gotta do an alignment on cambers?!
Hope that helps! 👍

Just did this today. It's so dumb that the hardest part of the job is getting the wiper arms off.
this van is made of 100% chinesium grade metals. everything brakes on it, all the time.

Can you please tell me how you like the auto shack shocks.
Is the height ok.
They’re the cheapest ones I can find. But I’m curious how they will fit and work.
never get spring and strut replacements unless it OEM factory. I made that mistake once. IT NEVER RODE THE SAME. it was spongy. sat differently. i'd rather get a reload and compress the factory spring. only a little more work but it's worth it
Thanks!
