I just bought one of these in dark grey. It’s beautiful. The Wilderness Version also feels quicker than the regular Forester. With regards to the CVT I’m one of those drivers who wants the fake gear changes. (I’m coming from a 2013 BMX X1 that had all the power one could ever ask for - I used it’s power rarely after the first month) I love everything about this vehicle except I find the cabin a bit loud at highway speeds. Wireless charging & wireless CarPlay would have been nice to have. I’ll pick up an aftermarket solution. This vehicle handles pot holes and crappy roads better than our 2020 Honda Pilot (which I really like as well). The Pilot was an upgrade from our Toyota Highlander which used to get stuck in heavy thick spring snow. (We had winter tires - so embarrassing) Before we settled on the Forester I test drove the Honda CRV Black Edition. The car felt boring in comparison to the Forester. We also used to own a Toyota RAV4 - never again. Decent vehicle but had zero character. I never looked forward to sitting in it. This is the 3rd Subaru we’ve had. Both of previous Subaru’s were Imprezas that never got stuck anywhere - and we tried. Bottom line - I am so happy with the Forester Wilderness. I couldn’t care less about the lower gas mileage. It’s worth the $100 a year for sure for the looks and extra capability.
lol $100 a year, my man this things get 1/2 the mpg of a rav4 hybrid. so is it worth paying $2000cad more for gas and have a louder buzzer cabin. jack called it, just get the rav4
@@tdub25 I was only comparing the regular Forester to the Wilderness version. I’ve done the math, doing 15K kilometres per year you pay $200 more for gas at todays prices. ($1.59 per litre). It’s a lot for sure but it’s worth it for how much more enjoyment I get out of the vehicle. If all I cared about was gas mileage I’d have bought a Crosstrek Hybrid.
Jack, trying to film the shoppe portion of the review. Mark: those aren't American weights. By the way did you talk about ground clearance? Jack: yes I did Mark, 9.5 inches. Mark: hoyaah...
"physical realm" is a great way to describe this vehicle. As soon as I get my McLaren 720S and my Integra Type R, I will unite it to the Cognitive and Spiritual realms and Ascend to the Shard of Cars.
I think all Subaru’s sharing this platform behave similarly. My main complaint is the CVT transmission, really uninspiring, but I think necessary to keep fuel consumption acceptable offsetting the permanent 4x4 traction and flat engine. I personally love my Crosstrek and find them very well balanced. What it lacks in sophistication it makes up in reliability, practicality and most importantly all weather drivability.
My good friend who's a hardcore Subaru guy just got one, I told him to save his money and just get a Premium trim but he HAD to have the mall crawler Wilderness spec. Every Forester is relatively capable so it's not like you're gaining much
@@kickyadick More than marketing. Increased ground clearance, improved approach and departure angles, transmission oil cooler, a reprogrammed CVT with lower "1st gear" ratio for improved slow speed crawling, Xmode that continues to operate at higher speeds, a roof rail system that can handle up to 800 lbs of stuff (200 when moving), all terrain tires, smaller wheels. These are meaningful changes to yes, an already capable vehicle. Does Nick's friend "need" all that stuff? Who knows. Maybe he just likes the way it looks? Who cares? Ford sold nearly 3/4 of a MILLION F150s last year. Do 720,000+ people need a full sized pick up truck? Probably not.
In 2022 we shouldn't have to explore every crevice to see if it holds your phone. The entire driver's side interior should be designed around the idea that everyone has a phone and needs somewhere to put it. Also this video was absolutely hilarious.
@@tgb-vf4es If I'm paying $40k for a vehicle, I shouldn't have to spend another dime on an accessory that holds my phone. Having a place to shove your phone vs having a holder that's designed for a phone are 2 wildly different things.
Subaru needs to do something about both the coarse engines and the CVT. They're so old they've debugged them, but they just aren't good to drive. The engine's configuration will likely make the NVH hard to solve (Porsche does better). The problem is that, like Mazda, they're a small automaker, so once they have a transmission or engine in production, it's hard to pay to replace it.
@@luljk2740 Maybe, though the RAV4 isn't especially wonderful, either. The rear seat is kind of cramped, and the faux-outdoorsy design is about as bad as the Subie. The hybrid is the most attractive RAV4, and that is pretty nice. I prefer the Venza for its sleeker styling and nicer interior. It isn't trying to look rugged, and that's a good thing, as it isn't. If I had to drive bad roads with mud and snow, this Wilderness Forester might be the better option, as it's better than Jeep's competitors.
parents have one of these, and one thing to say, windows are huge and car can be pretty loud especially in the higher rpms. Car itself is very nice, and amenities are cool for the price(40k CAD for limited trim). Nice vid
The gearing isnt changed much in terms of the trans, what they did was put the beefy differential from the ascent, onto the wilderness trims, which not only makes the differentials stronger, but lowers the ratio from 3.90 to 4.44, which is where the main fuel economy hit comes from. the cvt is also beefed up a bit but the ratios don't change. 3.90 to 4.44 would be about a 10% increase in rpms once you max out the CVT's overdrive ratio which will hit your fuel economy hard.
I love when Mark loses his shit for a second. Almost to the point of when he does a Pacifica or a Subaru suv video. I'm know I'm gonna get a good laugh
I can totally see why a lot of people don't like the new look and especially the plastic cladding but me personally? This is the first modern Subaru that I've liked the look of. I think Subaru's, even their performance vehicles, are pretty boring to look at. This one with its color accents and aggressively styling have me feeling some kind of way. Maybe that says more about me than it does about the car. I do agree as some others have said that a more sophisticated drive train in addition to the wilderness aesthetic and badging would have really made this a standout option for anyone serious about taking these things into the woods. If those panels are truly easily replaceable without some major work needing to be done, I think that could be great to keep you out of insurance claims and the body shop, too.
After having both the forester and outback for over a year (unless the wilderness upgrade drastically changes their character), I would say hands down spend the extra on the outback. It feels like it costs twice as much if you do a lot of highway driving. My wife likes the height of the forester. I hate having to constantly correct the steering angle to keep it straight on the highway compared to the outback, yes I've had alignment checked. Add in the better fuel economy, quieter ride, longer wheelbase, almost identical stowage capacity-IDK why she wanted the ester...
I own an e-boxer Forester 2020. As I like my driving licence, I need to drive slow. Hybrid returns very respectful fuel economy, for a brick on wheels with good ground clearance. The visibility, trunk and features inside are great. It's not perfect and I'd love to go for a trip with Subaru interior designer and complain all day about every little detail, but the truth is I'd still choose is over the competition. Usability and AWD are my main priority and Forester delivers very well.
I remember the days when black plastic cladding and black plastic mirrors were indicative of a base model. We've come full circle. Next trend to return? Gold/bronze colored cladding a la 1993 Lexus ES300, RX300, Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer.
Just to put subarus AWD system in perspective. I own a 2011 legacy 3.6r. There was a pretty decent snow storm a month and a half ago where i live. Driving to work on a 2 lane highway and traffic is at a stand still due to sedans and tracter trailers are as well. So me in my sedan go in the shallow V shapped median with drifts of at least 8inches and make it past all these people that are stuck in the road. I have gotten through snow that pilots and other big suvs are getting stuck in. Ill take the hit in mpg, subaru is the king of inexpensive cars that destroy snow.
Researched this car segment for the last 2 months, my findings, - 5th gen forester rated #1 in safety and readability over all others including RAV, trial hawk, honda and bronco sport. That said, it has been a long road for Subaru from the CVT tranny , oil consumption, head gasket issues of past generation vehicles. At 6'3, CR just announced the Forester is #1 with tall drivers as well, no surprise as the "green house" visibility is very attractive. All the safety dings can be disabled permanently, with the exception of engine on/off at stop. After market solution will solve that as well. So, I will be picking up my Subaru Forester Wilderness / pearl white next week. Comfortable driving on and off road, safety and readability, looks, honest service advisors that I have visited with during this time, all have pushed me this direction. And finally driving my daughters 2017 Forester premium, sold me on being a Subie owner. Suggested maintenance to ensure long life; 30k diff (F/R) service, 40k CVT Transmission service, and oil changes every 4k. Compared to the Outback, Off road analysis/videos show the turbo in the Outback gets totally in the way of performance when climbing, as the Forester's new gearing and software changes bring much more to the equation over the turbo, in my opinion. ua-cam.com/video/ZF_JtgJ7aKQ/v-deo.html HAPPY TRAILS but MIN ROCK CLIMBING for this cowboy. 🙂
I am with Mark, this engine feels plenty quick. I'm getting tired of so called enthusiasts expecting every goddamn vehicle to do 0-60 in 5 seconds. This is an adventure SUV, not a sports car. Could it use a bit more oomph? Maybe, but it's perfectly fine with this powertrain setup. Also, fuel economy is a priority for me, so I would probably skip the Wilderness and go with the Sport, for the additional 3-5 MPGs...and better looks. The Wilderness is definitely a solid value, though.
Another crossover. Perfect time to bring the phone into the company bathroom and let loose the caged brown elephant. I do this for you, SG! This is what we call Operation Dumbo Plop.
Mark in the croc hat. Literally almost fell out of the chair laughing! Nice touch.! Yeah, Subaru does a lot of things right - still manual controls for HVAC, great greenhouse, and the AWD system. Their drivetrains are falling further behind and their limited offerings (you can get the turbo in the Outback, but not the Forester) are perplexing. I have a '14 XT (2.0 L twin scroll turbo) and it has been great, but the 2.5L naturally aspirated is neither efficient or powerful enough to justify in this modern era. I don't know what the towing capacity is on this Wilderness version, but this is something that needs to be beefed up too.
I have an OB Wilderness, and it is truly a multipurpose vehicle. A great highway cruiser, family hauler and excellent off road. I'm not talking dirt roads either. I've taken mine on a deeply rutted trail in the winter, through snow, ice mud and rocks. I did put a significant dent in the front skid plate because of the less than ideal approach angle but aside from that it was great. Yes the looks are controversial, but the cladding does serve a real purpose by redirecting mud and water away from the car. We get 30-50cm of snow regularly where we live and I've found I can get in and out of my driveway no problem even after the plow has come by and blocked in everyone else. If you don't need a rock crawler, this car will do 80-90% of what a Jeep or 4Runner will do without compromising on-road performance outside of a slight MPG hit. I 'd even say that I think you will see a greater proportion of Wilderness Edition Subarus on trails or snowy dirt roads than you will see Jeeps or 4Runners.
You guys should try the previous gen Forester XT (SJ) with FA20 engine (WRX) The high torque CVT paired with turbocharger (constant spooling) is quite fast for an SUV
well it fast, but build quality in general is so so bad compare to the new generation, i had Forester 2017 brand new, a week after i drove on gravel road to the trailhead, holly sh*t fell like the new car falling apart.
I've got a 2013 XT. I think the last year of the turbo for a Forester and it has a mechanical auto transmission in it. I've blown out all the bushings doing 60MPH over logging roads, getting air with it. I've put rally wheels and LT tires on it and uprated the suspension with King's springs and Bilsteins on it. I drive the snot out of it and have loved the car. I just put a full new exhaust on it because the factory one was rotted out. I'm going to drive this until the wheels fall off of it. I just got a loaner of the new model. The CVT is greatly improved from the last gen, but I still hate it and the thing that was just heartbreaking is the stupid driving assist nonsense. If you push a corner to apex it, it starts to turn in automatically and you have to fight it to hold the line you want. The entire time you drive on a twisty road it's fighting the right lines through the corners. The motor is wheezing along compared to my XT, it has no nuts and particularly so if you want to pass at 70mph, there's nothing left to it. I'm 6'5" and it's roomy, has awesome visibility for road trips. It's a great compromise of small size but plenty of cargo space and my 2013 has been quite reliable for me over the years. I just wish Subaru would bring the turbo back, a ZF 8spd and leave the driving to the driver. I'm pretty sure mine will be the last Subaru I ever own and it's a shame.
There is an auto start stop eliminator for 100 bucks and plugs in either: Under the driver seat Above the roof mounted center console Depends on options packages
Forester Sport for me! Probably in white, too. The price is perfect, and the color for their accents, on the Sport, is a lot more tasteful to sportify a vehicle that has to maximize visibility like that. Also, you won't be stuck with all those buttons that you don't need anyway haha
I have a '14 2.5 manual, and it's pretty good, but also pretty similar in layout to the new model. It's too bad the manual was discontinued - I feel like the Wilderness trims are the ones that could justify that transmission since it's more predictable than the CVT. It would be especially great if they offered one with a crawler gear like the 4WD Tercels or the new Bronco. My biggest complaints are the undefeatable traction control (the off button only reduces intervention) and how it throws me around over bumps (this is a trait of all SUVs - I'm comparing to cars where the lower seat height makes the side-to-side movements less pronounced).
@major wow, it's better, but still not great. I've been driving manual since 2005, but feel like I'm learning all over again because of how inconsistent the electronic throttle is. I stall this car regularly, but rarely did with my other cars (Vibe, Elantra, Accord, Tucson, Metro, among others), probably because they were all cable throttles.
@major wow How are you spinning wheels in bad weather with a Forester? You might want to look at your tires. I have a 15 Forester XT and I don't even spin wheels in bad weather. I've had absolutely no problems with acceleration or throttle control. My area has cancellations for bad weather during the winter and I am routinely passing large trucks and SUVs.
The transfer case would have to be redesigned. It's more complicated than just the CVT, especially that people expect eight gears. Subaru's AWD is very specific and only comparable to Audi Quattro in many regards. There will be a solution similar to a Prius breadbox. They already have it. I'd assume next gen cars would have that or better implementation of e-boxer.
@@KilroyActual I guess it would. I tried to find a "test" or "study" on the web showing how big the impact would be and came up empty. I'm very curious.
@@valdius85 We know Subaru had standard auto trans in their cars in the past with great results on the AWD side of things. . Look, we have a Crosstrek in the family and love it. I'm just curious to understand how much the CVT impacts product market fit, improve gas mileage, etc, considering every single publication complains about it. It is unanimous.
@@nelsonricciardi7087 They had, but they were all type with less gears. This is why I wrote that the modern standard is 8 gears, minimum 6. That is bit so will cause problems. It is doable, Audi Quattro is similar in design. But then it would not be affordable and less space for passengers. It like torque converter AT as well, but I'm not sure I'm willing to pay the price for it :)
I totally agree with the stop/start. I just rented a Forester last weekend and the stop/start is terrible. Shakes the whole car. My Honda Passport barely makes a fuss with its stop/start.

Jack...how does this compare to the second gen Toyota GR 86 and Subaru BRZ ?? That black cladding is just a wonderful way to show off the salt... A precursor to what that cladding will appear like after a couple of years of summer sun damage.
I have the 2019 Forester for my wife because its an appliance and it works. I thought the original design from 2019-2021 was rather decent, but then they showed this refreshed 2022 and I though it was AWFUL, then I saw the wilderness which is even uglier with the cladding. I never seen a manufacture change the headlights so much for a refresh. I'm on a few 2019+ Forester groups and they are raving over the Wilderness and 2022 redesign and I just can't get over how ugly it is.
My old RAV4 with the 269hp 3.5 V6 4WD got 28mpg on the freeway with the cruise set on 75mph, but my GUTLESS 182hp with the Horrible CVT only gets 27mpg with my Forester Touring. Had I have known that I’d be loosing all the horsepower from my RAV4 to get LESS mpg with my Forester, I would have NEVER EVER bought my Forester and I would’ve still been driving my RAV4.
You guys are not exaggerating about the auto stop/start system...my '21 Crosstrek gives me such an annoying jolt that I too shut it off every time I get in the car.
ADD a K&N Cold Air Intake and a Borla exhaust and you’ll increase your hp, torque and mpg by 15%. That’s what I did with my 22 Sport. It sounds great, hauls ass and I’m getting 38-40 mpg on the freeway. If you do these things on your Wilderness, you should get at least 34mpg on the freeway

Holy shit one of the best driving impression segments in a while lmao
I love Foresters. Great visibility, sturdy, great in bad weather, and all the capability of an SUV in a nimble size.
(We had winter tires - so embarrassing)
Before we settled on the Forester I test drove the Honda CRV Black Edition.
Your gonna be paying fuck tons more then $100 in gas with this oil market
"Beautiful" LOL
lol $100 a year, my man this things get 1/2 the mpg of a rav4 hybrid. so is it worth paying $2000cad more for gas and have a louder buzzer cabin. jack called it, just get the rav4
What went wrong with your RAv 4 experience ?
I should have bought every 2019 Outback 3.6 I could find. Smooth, powerful, and NO body cladding. Thanks for starting my morning with a smile.
yeaaaa but those things get about 20mpg, just get a 4runner.
The woman looked at her test. It's positive and she smiled. 2 weeks paid 'covid' vacation. Awesome!
Jack, trying to film the shoppe portion of the review.
Mark: those aren't American weights. By the way did you talk about ground clearance?
Jack: yes I did Mark, 9.5 inches.
Mark: hoyaah...
I love the weird stock footage you guys are inserting. Nice touch, and a subtle way to make fun of cliches.
My wifes '18 Forester so far has been bulletproof. This is our 3rd, great wagons 👍
Let's see it hold up as well as my Xterra has.
@@povertyspec9651 old exterras are pretty good. But not as good as my Sequoia 😏
Good for you, but don't call them wagons. They're fugly SUVs
huh and here i though only girls who like girls drive subarus
"physical realm" is a great way to describe this vehicle. As soon as I get my McLaren 720S and my Integra Type R, I will unite it to the Cognitive and Spiritual realms and Ascend to the Shard of Cars.
Manufacturers are really loving the orange / gold offroad trim!
Every Forester is relatively capable so it's not like you're gaining much
The superpower of good old marketing
@@ragweedmakesmesneeze well said
In 2022 we shouldn't have to explore every crevice to see if it holds your phone. The entire driver's side interior should be designed around the idea that everyone has a phone and needs somewhere to put it. Also this video was absolutely hilarious.
👍👍
There's always a place for a phone. Never had this issue. If anything buy a vent holder. This is literally a non-issue.
@@tgb-vf4es If I'm paying $40k for a vehicle, I shouldn't have to spend another dime on an accessory that holds my phone. Having a place to shove your phone vs having a holder that's designed for a phone are 2 wildly different things.
@@SalemTechsperts there are many accessories that don't come standard with $120k vehicles, let alone $40k. It's not such a big deal.

Yo these edits never chill. Big love!
This was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while!
They would be actually decent if they had a regular transmission and a lsd like they used to
We love our Forester but it will be even better once it is all electric.
And if it's looking like a normal car
At this point a rav4 seems like a better alternative
Nice vid
I’ve got a 2016 XT. I love it, I think it looks way better than the new cars. I couldn’t imagine modifying the new ones
2017 XT here!
Some of the best reviews pointing out flaws and keeping it real.
Mark's faux-rage voice is part of the UNESCO World Heritage
In Europe we only get a 150hp mild hybrid version :(
This or the sport? I would like to see episode with the wilderness first sport.
Probably just the look of it, even though the Outback is better in every conceivable way, wagons are an acquired taste.
"it's quicker than a RAV4!!.... maybe." wow subaru really hit a home run here im all in fellas
Maybe a gas RAV4, but the hybrid? Not a chance.
Wood trim in the interior?
Since being subbed to this channel my V levels have dropped 8%.
Compared to the Outback, Off road analysis/videos show the turbo in the Outback gets totally in the way of performance when climbing, as the Forester's new gearing and software changes bring much more to the equation over the turbo, in my opinion. ua-cam.com/video/ZF_JtgJ7aKQ/v-deo.html
HAPPY TRAILS but MIN ROCK CLIMBING for this cowboy. 🙂
The stock footage is sooohhh on point 😂
Mark losing his shit just after 9 mins left me lol'ing and rewinding to rewatch.
Nice!!! I like the small changes to the channel, well done savage
Very well done and entertaining as always! The scam call at the end was the cherry on the pie :)))
I just bought one but I couldn't find the mandatory CO-EXIST bumper sticker in the glovebox. Should I contact the dealer or Subaru directly?
I knew when I clicked on this video I was going to be presented with a commercial-style melody, and I was not disappointed.
This video was equally as funny as the cvt's annoying.
Great job guys
These reviews are the best!
The Subaru Wilderness, drive modes that sync with your menstrual cycle.
Something big is going down at Subaru for them to drop the STi flagship car from their lineup. Would like to see this channels take on a subject.
It is Toyota taking over, sad days for Subaru from now and so on, Toyota is killing Subaru!
I suspect Subaru is waiting a few years to make the STI electric and wants to use Toyota's upcoming solid-state batteries that recharge in 10 minutes.
@@EfraKrajo I am thinking something big is going down like they are going to get bought out not just the EPA and EV excuse.
First Honda pulls out of F1 , now this. The Great Pussification and the Great Electrification are happening simultaneously!
Instead of updating the engine they'd rather just axe it
4:37 It has an inch more clearance than the Outback? Both Wilderness trims share the same levels of clearance...
Subaru’s primary market for the Forester has a constant yearning for the kd lang package.
You guys should try the previous gen Forester XT (SJ) with FA20 engine (WRX)
The high torque CVT paired with turbocharger (constant spooling) is quite fast for an SUV
I believe they actually did a review of the XT back in the days!
well it fast, but build quality in general is so so bad compare to the new generation, i had Forester 2017 brand new, a week after i drove on gravel road to the trailhead, holly sh*t fell like the new car falling apart.
It's funny how much capability Subaru puts into its vehicles, while also using cvts which renders them useless off-road
BASED
X-mode works like magic
It's about the appeal to emotion. Plastic cladding inspires emotional confidence in a customer base with more estrogen and granola than gonads.
Yep, they overheat. Luckily for Subaru knowone is off roading them anyway 🤣
@petayV8 watch Driving Sports TV's video of this particular vehicle vs. a Jeep, and see if you have the same opinion.
I love Mark's little outbursts lol
There is an auto start stop eliminator for 100 bucks and plugs in either:
Under the driver seat
Above the roof mounted center console
Depends on options packages
The oil stain on the headrest pulled my attention way more than I think it should.
Ps - Hated the incline hold on my WRX and ended up turning it off.
Looking to give the Rubicon and TRD Pro a run for their money at whole foods.
Nice 😂
Such a funny review! Keep it up haha
I wonder what would be the impact in cost/price if Subaru sourced a proper 8 speed auto for their cars.
It would have worse gas mileage

Look, we have a Crosstrek in the family and love it. The CVT is not a showstopper for day to day driving. It is annoying sometimes, but not a show stopper.
.
I'm just curious to understand how much the CVT impacts product market fit, improve gas mileage, etc, considering every single publication complains about it. It is unanimous.
@@nelsonricciardi7087
They had, but they were all type with less gears.
I love how silly this was lol and it's the most I've ever even thought about Subaru

That black cladding is just a wonderful way to show off the salt...
A precursor to what that cladding will appear like after a couple of years of summer sun damage.
At least it won’t clash with your new WRX
I have the 2019 Forester for my wife because its an appliance and it works. I thought the original design from 2019-2021 was rather decent, but then they showed this refreshed 2022 and I though it was AWFUL, then I saw the wilderness which is even uglier with the cladding. I never seen a manufacture change the headlights so much for a refresh.
I'm on a few 2019+ Forester groups and they are raving over the Wilderness and 2022 redesign and I just can't get over how ugly it is.
Maybe get the new one to match your wife better?
My old RAV4 with the 269hp 3.5 V6 4WD got 28mpg on the freeway with the cruise set on 75mph, but my GUTLESS 182hp with the Horrible CVT only gets 27mpg with my Forester Touring.
Had I have known that I’d be loosing all the horsepower from my RAV4 to get LESS mpg with my Forester, I would have NEVER EVER bought my Forester and I would’ve still been driving my RAV4.
Mazda CX-50 (60 in EU apparently) is coming out that does look also buffy without being ugly, serious contender.

That’s what I did with my 22 Sport.
It sounds great, hauls ass and I’m getting 38-40 mpg on the freeway.
If you do these things on your Wilderness, you should get at least 34mpg on the freeway
