  • US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that Washington would provide Ukraine with 31 Abrams battle tanks , but said the delivery could be a lengthy process.
"Delivering these tanks to the field is going to take time. Time that we'll see and we'll use to make sure the Ukrainians are fully prepared," he said. Senior US officials earlier said it would take months, not weeks.
Announcing the decision in remarks at the White House, Biden said the move was not "an offensive threat to Russia."
He said the Abrams tanks were needed to help Ukrainian forces "improve their ability to maneuver in open terrain."

Correction: The M1 Abrams MBTs are not able to operate on jet fuel alone. Rather, the M1 Abrams' unique gas turbine engine can use a variety of fuels - including jet fuel.

Remember, using jet fuel gives you accurate range on a full tank. Kerosene would also give accurate range. It is even possible to fill with 150+ proof vodka. Using gasoline or worst, diesel, will lower range of the tank. The US needs to deliver 4-5 HEMTT fuel tankers, 2 Recovery vehicles, and a 120’ Bridge vehicle to support the Battalion.

@MSD Group Decouple from the West? Other countries around lack the national discipline to put greater long term wealth over short term local wealth.
Every US State was its own country. They submitted voluntarily to Federal rule.
Europeans since WW2, have given up some national sovereignty to create a greater wealth common market. EU countries just do not yet know how much local sovereignty they will surrender to form a more perfect Union.
Russian’s believe their greatest strength come from militarily dominating other countries, SSRs and local autonomous ethnic minorities. They do not yet see strength through greater integration, military submission, and using their force of arguments to succeed.
Africa has not gotten past colonial legacies.
Asian and South American countries are too jealous of each other mirror Europeans in forming the EU.

Personally for me, Germany and France are the greatest disappointments of this war. Not only they "missed" sending sanctioned component parts for Russian war equipment since 2014, they were the indecisiveness at its core!
I wish these 2 plus the US had the same vision over Russian true war capabilities as Poland and Baltics had had for years. The war could've ended by now with total Russian retreat from Ukraine. Russian state is just a zombie. the fairy tales left after USSR should've ended once the world saw they can't even protect the strategic airfield in Engels.
Just give ukrainians all they need for the victory, and let Russian live in their legit borders under putin for 100 more years. They deserve it completely!

2nd, Abrams engine can use any fuel because it's a turbine engine. If it lits, it fits. US use jet fuel (JP) in Abrams because it's cheaper for them logistically from CONUS since all vehicles from airplane, drones and AFV use the same fuel (JP) in 1 tanker. Other countries who use Abrams also use diesel not JP.

I think a standard Nato tank batallion is 56 tanks (4 companies of 14). Ukraine tank batallions are 31 (per Biden's comment). So when Biden says Germany intends to help to send 2 batallions worth of tanks are we talking about 62 or 112 tanks in total? Sending them in multiples of 14 would seem to imply Nato batallions of 56.

I think Germany just did not want to be seen as a lone actor in potentially escalating a situation. It has a very traumatized self-image. I think his request was fair, but I still suggest the Leopard is the best solution. We are talking about a difference of around eight months for delivery. Logistics for the Abrams should be fast-tracked and funded in Poland given they have an order for some 250 of them anyways.

31 M1-Abrams tanks + 14 Leopard 2's + 14 Challengers + 150 Bradley Fighting Vehicles (armed with TOWs) = a VERY BAD DAY for Russian forces in Eastern and Southern Ukraine. Russia has the numbers, for sure. But they don't have the quality of equipment or troops. M1 Abrams are not good for the Ukrainian war, long term, due to the logistical issues with them, so I don't imagine that the M1 Abrams will be deployed offensively. I think Bradleys, T-72's, Leopards, and Challengers will be doing most of the offensive fighting. Used in joint operations, the Russians have no good answer for this on the battlefield.

Truefully them bradleys and TOWs plus other APT will be more effective than any main battle tanks put togather combine. the T-72 is not a cutting edge sophisticated tank by modern standards. Bradleys are design to take those cold war era tanks down very effectively. They are highly mobile, take less fuel and more manuverable and by far faster, exactly what the ukrainan needs in a wide battlefield warfare.

It is correct that the Abrams are "not suited" to battlefield in Ukraine. They are too heavy for the open fields across most of Ukraine, compared to the German Leopard 2 tanks which were specifically designed for those conditions. But the Abrams are ideally suited for fighting in urban areas and having them will allow the Ukrainians to choose the best armaments for the various types of combat they may encounter.
