The riot in Hong Kong was way more violent. They did it for an entire year until COVID and the security law started. And what started the protest was just an expedition law, there were no war crimes and mass graves involved. What the US Congress is trying to do is that they are also pushing a bill to shut the students up on the pretext of an overused term called "anti-Semitism". The term is weaponized to the point that it's becoming anti-democratic.

Please insist on habeas corpus for hostages. In any criminal proceedings victims are first series of witnesses. ICC should first examine victims before any other procedure. I believe all universities have faculty of law who should be advising students and guiding them on nuances of law. Students of Harvard should have consulted their friends in law before rushing to sign petitions or organizing protests. Hostages themselves are material evidence.

If you think these are riots, you haven't seen riots. It is very clearly peaceful protests. Police initiating violence does not change the nature of peaceful protest. Under that criteria, most of Gandhi's peaceful protests and the MLK civil rights marches would be "riots" (no they weren't) because police or national guard initiated violence against them.

Not good but quite a big difference. Particularly since in the US the charges are nearly always dropped. Likewise in CA with huge protests against gov policies that for the most part people are free to do as long as they don't disrupt the entire economy which is much more than just the government's interest.

Limitations to speech protected under the First Amendment have always existed. For instance the First Amendment does not protect the right "Of students to make an obscene speech at a school-sponsored event" as per
Bethel School District #43 v. Fraser, 478 U.S. 675 (1986), nor the right "to incite imminent lawless action" as per Brandenburg v. Ohio, 395 U.S. 444 (1969), both of which have occurred during the protests at Columbia.
The First Amendment therefore does not protect the anti-Semitic speech which has unfortunately found its way into the university campus protests against the situation in Israel/Palestine.
