i just want to say you are like a beauty scholar/philosopher, and this is why we love you! was waiting for the second part like some people wait for the next super hero movie.
Omg this is so REAL. I've been following you for however many years long, feels like forever, and to be honest this video and this kind of reasoning is why you have such a loyal follower base hahahahah because it's how humans change, evolve, and it is very relatable. Whenever I feel like grungy makeup time, I just click on an old video of yours and that's it, no big deal. I LOVE that you are staying true to your own and I believe most of us who watch you feel the same way!
As a "mature" woman I am so tired of everyone telling me how to "fix" my hooded lids. Like you, I also just want to "have my eye shape just be my eye shape." Ugh, I'm just so tired of being told my face is problematic in some way! So this is refreshing. I really like the look on you, and you look great in that cream-colored top.
The makeup artist Jo Baker did some awesome looks on actress Zoe Huller recently and it was really refreshing they made hooded eyes an asset not a thing to be corrected
I have a daughter, 14. What I found after having kids is that I want to look like myself as much as possible. Even more so now, because people say she looks like me and I want her to be comfortable with how she looks. Same goes with me changing my body. I’ve gained some weight. I’d like to take it off, but I want to be careful about how I present that to my daughter. I don’t know if that applies to other parents’ relationships with their kids so I don’t judge others if they choose differently. We are all out here just trying to do our best.
I commend you for your consideration and care. When I was young my mother would stand in front of the mirror and complain she was fat - though I didn't think she was - and not be ok with her body, so my young mind thought ok she must be fat because shes saying she is. Then she never made quality changes to her life to lose the weight and continues to complain. Now I am 45 years old and intellectually I know better, but I still struggle to feel it my heart and soul. I'm really glad there are parents out there not repeating what my mother did
I’m also a new-ish mom in my late 30s who has fully embraced a simpler, more “chic” makeup routine, and recently was SO excited to have an artsy evening event to attend that would allow me to break out all my neglected “fun”/dramatic makeup. Put it all on and was shocked at how dated it felt. I realized my glam/evening makeup techniques and style have not evolved the same way my everyday makeup taste has, simply because I don’t go out and about the way I did in my early 30s and this rarely get to practice. I thought I was over that kind of makeup in general, but this video made me realize that maybe I just need to update do-to my “glam” look to better align with my current, more refined, minimalist preferences. And that actually sounds refreshing and exciting to me!
Another late 30s new mum here- totally thinking exactly the same! My make up is much more simple and quick, if I wear it at all, and recently I got to do evening make up for an event and just felt weird in it all night! Excited to try updating my glam makeup now I’ve been re inspired!
Ya and I think the thing I struggle the most with is applying a formality of makeup that isn’t my typical formality. When I finally do have that event, I’m applying what I had done years ago- ie that heavy eyeshadow look I used rock, and then feeling real weird about it because it doesn’t feel fresh/modern or me anymore.
"I saw myself in drag as my younger self" I LOVE that statement, and I can really see it in the changes that you made - so fabulous! In my 50s my makeup needs have changed enormously in some ways and not so much in others. The thing that hasn't changed is that, similar to my 20s-40s, I don't have a face that can handle a lot of makeup (eg a fair/neutral skin auburn redhead with low contrast rather than high contrast), pale brows and lashes that always need emphasis, eyes that can only handle a minimal amount of shadow and lips that need less saturated color to look 'bold'. But in my 50s, there have been major changes to my skin and face that have affected how I wear makeup and it's been an adjustment. I now have age spots that seem impervious to concealer, hooded, puffy eyes, skin much more spotty and textured, and sagginess/weight gain that has changed general shape of my face. Also my brows have thinned and my hairline has receded a lot. Egads!! "I grow old, I grow old, I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled"!!! But what that has meant is that my old standbys like a cute cat wing eyeliner and a bright cheek just don't work anymore, and stuff like low coverage but smoothing skin tints and the Jones Road miracle balm (which provides a sort of gentle blurring highlight affect) does. If we are lucky to live so long, age comes for us, as do the ravages of life. It ain't pretty but I am glad I am still here and learning to work with this 'new me'. Keep doing you!!!
I really appreciate the nuanced, non judgmental way you are able to discuss being influenced by trends! So often, those of us who want to be our own authentic, creative selves will shorthand that into being “anti trend,” when it isn’t possible or even desirable to be entirely unmoved by the changing world around us. This is also making me think more about the desire to buy products (especially clothes, but also makeup things that last a long time like eyeshadow palettes) that we will “love forever.” And how part of the natural, healthy evolution of personal style means we either need to buy things that can be used in new ways and evolve along with us, or just prioritize a realistic amount of eyeshadow, clothing etc. that won’t put too much pressure on our future self to stay the same.
I'm living this right now. Prefer not to be wasteful so currently feel like I have to use up things I'm not particularly into at the moment before I can change my look. I'm beginning to realise that shopping today for excess I don't need is depriving my future self of the opportunity of shopping for what I need in the future.
There is something pleasantly academic about this video and many others you've created lately. I was an art student, and it reminds me of critique time in a constructive, healthy way that fosters growth, so it's a little like having a classmate again. Even makeup, that thing that some people think of as superfluous, is part of our identity and self-expression. See: Stacey Greene's photographs of her friends' used lipstick bullets with their unique patterns of use. There's a reason those images are still fascinating people. I love that you are true to yourself and also acknowledging that this is part of being in a society and drawing from others around you. If makeup is inherently a kind of social interaction, you don't want to send an inauthentic message.
I am a 62 yo non makeup wearer that has learned so much from you. I love your channel and you. Thank you for showing that over time we grow and evolve just like products evolve. I now wear light coverage and pay more attention to my skin and face.
As a callback to one of your older videos where you applied as much blush as possible, I feel like it would be kind of cool to see an updated version of that. You've really embraced a little to no cheek makeup look that is so beautiful. I am just so intrigued to hear more of your self reflections about how your view of yourself has changed.
Number 1: I'm enjoying this brief. It feels more makeup playtime like. At least to me, the playtime part implies nondairy wear and that it all might get washed away after. Please feel free to find your comfort spot with video briefs Number 2: I'm glad that you came right back with this video. If we never let our styles change, we'd still be doing 2016 makeup
I’m going to be so for real right now, I have been watching you for the entire 6-7 years and have noticed (sorta eerily) that our tastes have organically changed together. I was cutting my own bangs into funky shapes the same time as you, and then grew them out the same time as you. dark jaclyn Hill eyeshadows shifted into white lower eyeliner exclusively (I don’t wear mascara anymore), bright lipsticks shifted into light glosses. I don’t think it is a matter of being influenced by you as much as there is something in the aether (stars??) affecting alll of us. And I will add that I have gone out with occasion to dress up, and I can confirm that I do not go back to the heavy eye, I want to look like myself.
I feel this. Sometimes other people remember me a different way and, as they talk, I am just like that is not me anymore. I have evolved. It can be strange to have a past version of myself held up. Because past me was great but now me is just different. I usually haven’t “chosen” to change. Change came with a changing body, changing circumstances, changing activities, changing perspective. It’s slow but real. I’m coming out of depression this morning and while watching your video I got dressed with makeup. My version, for me. And I just feel really good. I looked in the mirror and thought Oh - there you are :)
Styles and preferences change. I used to only do a soft pink satin eyeshadow stick with liquid liner and mascara and now I do bold colourful multi-eyeshadow looks often times with false lashes. Boxing oneself into a corner isn't productive. I basically never follow trends and am happier for it. Other people feel happiest being on trend. At the end of the day it matters that we make ourselves happy not others.
Its interesting because I feel like atm there are broadly 2 "Gen Z" makeup camps - the TikTok "everything is a trend, everyone should look similar" camp that Kackie was talking about recently, and the "Donni Davy/Euphoria, Chappell Roan, makeup is drag and makeup is expression" camp. I feel like you were always championing the second perspective, even before it was an "official" trend and i am excited to see your tastes evolve and change. Im so inspired seeing that second group not feeling this intense pressure to make themselves "more beautiful" like we all had in the early days of Makeup UA-cam and instead feeling like makeup is just how youve described - a way of adding fun into your day and expressing yourself - whether through hot pink glitter brows or through a subtle shiny lid. I hope that continues to blossom.
Hannah, this video makes me so happy. Such a lovely journey of self reflection. After your video yesterday, I thought about the fact that I've become a woman who wears makeup on the daily. Most of my life, makeup was only for going out or going to work. I always felt as though I was doing it for other people. During the pandemic, I began applying makeup every day so I could learn how to do it since nobody else was going to see it. I wear makeup for me, now. When I apply it, it is subtle and quiet and makes me feel confident and a little bit fierce.
After I had my daughter I went through so many changes...my hair, makeup even my clothes. I was trying to understand my new self. It wasn't easy. What does a new mom look like? What do I look like as a new mom? Also I was tired and everything was difficult, at least at first. I've changed quite a few times since with different watershed moments. I do have a steady state beneath it all but some of the outside things shift and change to adjust to the new normal. My wonderful daughter moved out on her own recently for college and it's happening again. I wear much less makeup now and I'm happy with that. I appreciate the thoughtfulness of this, thank you.
I'm finding this at the moment at 8 months postpartum. I feel embarrassed wearing my favourite heavily distressed jeans in public because I fear being judged, as though this is somehow irresponsible for a mum? I'm not sure how much of this is society and how much is me overthinking, but it's wild!
Always wonderful to hear your thoughts! Curious if you've considered the impact that moving out of LA and to the east coast may have had on your preferences?
So happy you circled back to this! The revised look is a truer reflection of you and make-up of the time, as it happens to be. Your outro smile is obvious and telling of exactly how good you feel in this look and I'm happy to see it. xo
I think you looked stunning in yesterday’s video but that doesn’t matter if you’re not feeling comfortable and confident in your appearance. It’s completely okay for tastes to change and you don’t have to push yourself out of your comfort zone for other people. Also you look stunning always.
i find your take on how your makeup look from yesterday was untrendy really interesting, because i’d consider your old makeup style extremely close to what’s trending for the most “in the know” “ahead of the curve” people today. i feel cringey saying any of this but bear with me. for example, looking at charli xcx as the “it girl” (i hate that phrase) of the summer, her eye look is often a long black wing with smoked out black eyeshadow. we’re only at the beginning of seeing how her and the “party girl lifestyle” she’s selling as her image will manifest into greater trends. but i think your “grungy” smoky eyes are so close to that! maybe even a bit more refined than what’s in favor today but i’d say extremely aligned with it still! i’ve seen many people going for smudgy black makeup for a while now. i think people got tired of the “clean” makeup and are now reverting to a more done up, but “dirty” look, certainly less polished than 2016 makeup. with the idea of “party girl makeup” and “indie sleaze” slowly entering into collective fascination, i think your old makeup style definitely has a place in that, but i understand if it’s simply not for you anymore :)
yes! earlier this year I was getting ready for an event and tried “doing” my naturally wavy hair and it felt like prom hair to me? I washed it out and my natural hair brought an ease to the rest of my look that seemed somehow even more elegant
I watched both videos, back to back. I think it's great that you listened to comments and indulged what was being said out of courtesy to your viewers who maybe miss seeing a certain type of content. But then you got this great added bonus video where you were really able to dig deep into your makeup psyche and think about why you don't do the same things anymore. Very interesting.
I’ve really enjoyed all your iterations❤I’m in my early ‘60s, my eyeliner evolution went from full on 1960s Mod dollybird in my 20s to feathery lashes concentrating mascara on the outer corner with a tiny wing of eyeliner underneath. I’m Still having fun and trying new, albeit subtle variations on my original look.
OMG!! I LOVE THIS!!! I agree with everything you said, and it makes so much sense. I particularly love how you articulated between your "daily" makeup and your "occasion" makeup. I'm so excited to see you play more with what your "occasion" makeup will be and how it evolves. Thank you so much for this part 2!!
"my makeup has changed because trends have changed" THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUU I've had this bee in my bonnet for a while and haven't made the time to post about it so you're getting my full ramble. You're welcome. 🤣 It's been a pet peeve of mine over the past couple of years, to hear creators talk about their makeup style changing and attribute it to getting older. Or more mature or their style becoming more refined and mature or whatever else. Like... First of all that's so normative and damaging in a way that I don't think people consider. Attributing minimal makeup style to maturity, I think, creates the kind of standard that causes people think they or someone else is "too old to wear that." And that limits our own ability to return to those things later if we decide we want to. Second of all, attributing anything to "getting older" is utterly meaningless. You're always getting older. Any change that happens over time *is because you're getting older*. There's no exception. So that kind of statement is pure nonsense that also happens to have the side effect of creating norms that can hurt people. But the thing that pets my peeve about it most is that folks who say that seem to be either ignorant of or blatantly ignoring the fact that *minimal makeup has been coming into vogue for the past few years*. And those trends are being brought into fashion *by people who are younger than us*. We are all influenced by changing aesthetic trends. None of us are exempt. And I just don't know why this particular tend is hitting our age group in a way that has us, idk, kind of blind to it? And has us perpetuating the ageist beauty standards that I think we attempted to push back on in our 20s when we all wanted to do full beats and people tried to tell us we were too old for that. I dunno. The whole thing makes me want to flip a table. Lol. Anyway, maybe you'll talk about all this in the video; I literally stopped after you said that to write this insufferably long comment. Thank you for coming to my TED Rant.😅
I feel similarly since becoming a mom. The dramatic, high contrast eye looks don’t really fit my life, but there is still room for sultry, for precision, for celebration, and for color. Just not all at once. Now I truly am focused on what feelings I am evoking and expressing, and which products in my collection I am drawn toward. Doing a project pan (especially the deck of panning one) has helped me a lot with rotating through my collection and adding fun, while still allowing me to adapt the makeup to my everyday, non-glamorous-yet-still-glorious life.
I am so glad you did this because often times we think that after a life change we want to go back to how it was before and not realizing that just does not fit
I’m 41 and still do the smoky eye near daily. With my eye shape, color season, and all that fun stuff, it doesn’t actually change my eye shape. I’m not going to say it blends in since I’m not using beige, but it just looks “right”. I’ll do a fun blush and highlighter right up by my temples and call it a day. I don’t use a base layer except on very rare occasions anymore, and I don’t do like bronzer or contour or color corrector. I’m embracing my face, just with fun art splashed on top of it. We have indeed hit the age where we’re like “yes, this is my face.” 😂
It’s funny I remember having and commenting similar revelations when you first started talking about the idea of the future self - and this is less about the application of makeup but I think, when it comes to shopping, thinking of yourself as the past self, similar to how you did yesterday, can also be an interesting and familiar sand trap when shopping. I still find myself becoming bright eyed when, say, a fun new glitter eyeshadow gets released when I too no longer really wear eye makeup (just one example of many I have encountered over the years). Suppose I’m talking about a different thing but came to mind as I watched this video!
I'm fascinated by this concept of evolution occurring outside of expression of each iteration. Like going from a fish to "surprise! Here's a horse" or "wow, a peacock" without seeing all the evolutionary steps along the way. It's really interesting to consider all the variables, from external cultural shifts to our own unique internal thought processes, that mean that sometimes when we put on the old dress or the old eyeshadow we may have a moment of "that's me and yet it isn't" and we are forced to sit with our own multitudes and it can be so unsettling. Thank you so much for the thought prompt!
I agree with you that the makeup zeitgeist has changed and that has meant that our tastes have also correspondingly evolved. However, in the funny way of trends, I think it's pretty clear that grunge is making a comeback. So, in the next 3-4 years, your makeup from the other day might star feeling fresh again!
Glitter light eyes are my current jam. If I want color I am going for a bold bright lip. I don’t look good in nude lips with very few exceptions. My favorite recent look was with Subversive. I used the pink astral all over the eye, added the amethyst astral in the outer third, then the very cool brown satin very lightly to create a shadow under the eye. Best look I have ever done with a Mothership! Every time I saw my reflection including when taking my makeup off for the day it was off the charts pretty. I used a very light hand for all of it.
You are beyond amazing to be so self aware, honest, and articulate enough to explain to strangers your internal process of evolution. I don’t even wear makeup, but I love watching your channel. ❤ I am learning alot, indirectly, about things peripheral to the beauty-scape just by listening to you. For example, what personal values are, how those values impact all of life, and how those values must evolve.❤ Thank You.
I appreciate your take on trends and how they influence how we want to present ourselves. There's a lot of talk about how after a "certain age" we should abandon all trends, but I think filtering them through a lens of ourselves and being honest about that is very healthy. If you have any more thoughts specifically around this for makeup or fashion I'd love to hear them! ❤
I appreciate your perspective on this. I’m in your age bracket and I’ve noticed I’ve been moving away from sculpted looks unless it’s full on makeup play time, in which case German expressionism here I come. Also I love your Polène bag, the color is exquisite
My favorite video all year!! You bring an eloquence to the beauty sphere and I just love listening to you wax philosophically while discussing makeup, aesthetics and taste. Thank you Hannah, can't wait for future videos.
So glad you are showing an updated version of your last look as it exactly answers my initial question after reading your pinned comment, which was what would special event makeup look like for the Hannah of today. Really cool to hear your deeper reflections as well as see a demo and will be following (additional evolution and reflections) with great interest.
Stunning as ever. Also I don't know why but I just remembered when you had an eye look with just the blue from the Gucci pallet and am wondering if that is something you still might wear. It was so pretty and chic. Does anyone else recall it cause I can't forget it?
Love that you actually filmed again the next day, and show us your thought process. I love both looks and love listening to you talk, so today and yesterday have been good to me:) xx
Love this updated "fancy" look! The past couple of years this has been my fancy look too in a way, just simple eyes with a little shimmer potentially and if I'm feeling confident, a subtle winged liner look to add some whimsy. I recently had an event where I wanted to do a dark green makeup look, spent so much time applying to see the result and take it off. It didn't feel like me, and it was something I used to always do when going out. I still have a witchy grunge in my heart, but now I've just been bringing that in with lipstick and nail paint.
I totally understand what you meant in this and the last video! How lovely it is to have our tastes change and to enjoy the variety that artistic expression offers us 🙂 I recently got married and did my own makeup. A lot of trials and experimenting! I followed all the bridal tutorials and nothing felt like me, despite objectively looking good. Nothing can bring our confidence down as much as wearing a look that doesn’t feel like who we are, despite how good it may look to others. It was all the experimenting that led me to find makeup for my wedding day that felt authentic to me, so I stand by your thoughts. Btw - white/cream is totally your color and looks great on you 🤍
Beautiful! I have been using dark brown eyeliner most times unless it is for performance . I’m 55 and I still love makeup, but don’t want to look as “ painted” for my daily life . However, I still love to play with changing the structure of my eyes, brows and pull all the tricks for stage 😁
This is very interesting; I'm not surprised to see your tastes changing with the zeitgeist as well as with all the changes in your personal life circumstances, not least of which because I've noticed you doing your lips in the current no-cupid's-bow shape in a way I'm pretty sure you didn't used to to the same extent. (re life circumstances, I'll note also that you live in a very different part of the country than you used to, with EXTREMELY different style norms!) Something I would love to see: current-you's takes on editorial makeup! I loved your Terry Barber looks back in the day, and that's clearly totally not your current vibe but the sheer ART of it all was such a delight and I'm intrigued how that might show up for you now
You are so YOU, and that's what I love! I get inspired less by the ''results'' of your makeup presentation, as much as by the way you present them. We get to try and change and evolve all differently and that is GORGEOUS.
I love Love *LOVE* your dark n grungy mom looks! I know style/preferences change, I'm going through my own change for fall, but Grungy makeup will *ALWAYS* have a place in my heart and I will *ALWAYS* have a soft spot for messy eyeliner/eyeshadow
Your 2 video evolution took me 2 months to realize 😅I'm glad you made this video because I've been feeling the same way as well. It has led me down the path of thinking about microtrends/social media trends vs "real life" trends. As I've been diving into trends and wanting to feel "trendier" and "more modern", I was feeling really pressured to get ahead of today's trends, diving into social media in a very unnatural way and consuming content that doesn't align with who I am just to try to be relevant/trendy, but when I actually went outside to go look at the clothing and style in stores, I realized that trends really don't move as fast as it seems to be moving on social media. It just made me aware of how gradual and long lasting "real world trends" are because of how long it actually takes for a trend to intertwine itself into the majority of people's everyday life. I'm sure you can articulate this much better than I can, but I would love to hear your thoughts on these microtrends vs macrotrends (for a lack of better words)
Loved the makeup in the last video, but I also love the conclusions you came to here. You look great both ways, but I can see why you're more comfortable in something like this!
I really enjoyed this journey! I go through such mood swings over my makeup throughout the day & these videos have given me some better vocabulary to grapple with my feelings on this I’d love to see your current dressy makeup looks with some color- I have amazing colorful eye shadows but haven’t found a way to use them for nights out that feels chic. Curious to see how you approach it :)
I was never a big eyeshadow person until 2020, and I started wearing more eye makeup because I felt like it offset the look of wearing masks at work and gave me something positive to focus on. I had fun with it but have been relieved lately to return to some of my previous more lipstick focused looks and feel more myself agian.
I love that you did these videos. I thought I was the only one feeling SO much better in much more minimal makeup compared to what I used to love doing and used to feel comfortable with. Any day I do a full-full face of makeup, I regret it by the time it's afternoon haha.
I feel the same. In my mid 30’s and wanting to have a fresh, natural look. I used to go full Jaclyn Hill mode but its so nice to be able to wear less and feel just as confident as I did back then but without feeling like I’m wearing a mask.
I love this because it doesn’t make us feel guilty about being influenced by trends in terms of our actual taste and what we think looks good. It’s subject to change, and I love that! Keeps life interesting.
I haven’t worn any makeup at all in 6 months I’ve been in bed recovering. I am excited to see what I like now when I can wear it again. I follow makeup closely and I love to look at makeup. A lot of things I would have wanted even last year I find myself thinking I could skip out on. It’s interesting I’ll see pallets and that would have been my dream palettes a couple of years ago but now I know I probably just won’t wear them.
Just stumbled onto you a few months back...what a breath of fresh air you are, lady! Make up reviews from a smarty-pants! Where have you been all my life?! xoxo
I love that you’re talking about how trends change our taste and perspective! I feel like so many people are afraid to admit that, but realistically, our aesthetic is meant to communicate who we are in some way. Trends ultimately change the meaning of our aesthetic communication choices just like language trends change the meaning of words. If we’re paying even a little bit of attention, we pick up on those changes. What we’re communicating about ourselves - the feel we’re going for - may not have changed, but we have to adjust in order to stay true to that. Not even to get into the reality that WE also change and evolve and encounter new ideas and have new experiences.
Hi Hannah! Of all the looks I've seen you with over the years, this one is my favorite so far. A reasonable glowy foundation (I think all of us got a bit Tin-man-y for awhile!), darker eye (without the layers of shadow) and equal depth of color at the lip ~ with your hair back it is an extremely elegant look (IMO). With the baby, I know the everyday look fits your lifestyle best and it doesn't make alot of sense to do full look, but I do think (my subjective opinion) that a darker eye with same level of lip color really suits you. Good reflection video!
I love this makeup look! I found your thoughts about this very interesting. I don't even wear makeup (I started coming here for the no-buy/fashion content) but I have been enjoying these types of videos also. Thank you for sharing!
Yes, I also find it very freeing to just be able to use some of my more sheer, flakey pastel multichromes from Clionadh all over the lid and not worry about building structure. A one and done Multichrome look seems in the world of this Euphoria inspired makeup to me, a bit. On a separate note, something that has made me sad though is seeing this new internet opinion that wearing eyeshadow (like in general) gives away people’s age, and that by wearing eyeshadow we reveal ourselves to be older millennials and very uncool. This makes me so sad because eyeshadow is my favorite part of my makeup routine - in that sense I feel increasingly like I want to ignore trends that I think are stupid.
Eyeshadow will be back soon enough! I remember around 2008, I was in my 30's and loved wearing bold lipstick, but I noticed that all the young people around me only wore lip gloss. I felt a bit sad that my makeup look might be harsh and outdated. But then the UA-cam beauty community took hold, and all of a sudden everyone was wearing Mac & Nars lipsticks and I felt like I was ahead of the game. 😅
@@Jasmine-in-my-mind I hope so!!! I’m not suddenly going to become a makeup minimalist regardless or throw out my eyeshadows, so I’ll be ready when eyeshadow comes back in style. It’s true these things just go through cycles.
I love this. Your current taste in eye makeup is much more similar to mine than the kind of look you did in the previous video (although I’ve always thoroughly enjoyed seeing you do your makeup that way). I would love to see more dressed up looks!
Thank you for sharing! I love how articulate and thoughtful you are with your viewers. Both looks are beautiful, but looking confident and comfortable in your makeup is the best!
I’m so with you on this! I’ve had the same feeling about the more sculpting eye make up I used to do, that now just doesn’t feel quite right. This makes so much sence, thank you!
Love nerdy weedy chatty videos like this! My head is pinging with thoughts now. I find it so interesting that gen z gets the cultural credit of bringing this self-acceptance keep-your-face-but with-stuff-on-it discourse when the makeup artists working on the iconic zoomer faces (like Doniella Davy, Jo Baker, and Katie Jane Hughes) are millenials/late gen x-ers. It's fascinating how trend setters are often invisible - phantoms painting behind the scenes.
So looking forward to the next exploration. It’s always surprising when you discover the inspiration for a new project. I imagine it must be exciting to find these moments, when you’ve been working and reworking this medium for 7 years!
it did not disappoint!! loved the look and loved hearing your thoughts. i am very excited for (fancy) make up playtime that aligns with this season of Hannah 💜
I've been catching up on your videos and must say this one excited me the most! My makeup style has evolved too similarly to yours. Looking forward to future makeup look videos 🥰
If I blink…when I blink…I blink…giggle 😂😂😂 I loved this bc I feel in the same chapter you are. I’m 39 and a mom of younger kids and it felt lovely and sentimental to reflect on my journey with makeup. I too used to do the smokey eye all the time and now find myself doing a sheer base with glitter or shimmer on top. Glad you made this video.
I love this video Hannah. I’ve been struggling with this myself ever since the end of last year and it’s been an adjustment, particularly for my makeup purchases. My instinct is still to buy makeup that I would have worn a couple years ago rather than what I currently like. Change is hard sometimes but it’s good to embrace it. Who wants to be the same person they were years ago? I’m excited to see more of your current version of glam.
I am watching you for a couple of years now and honestly I coudn't watch yesterdays video. It was like you were abused, and doing something just because of that. Now you feel like yourself. Please be yourself always. It is healing the world.❤
WARNING: lots of talking! the actual makeup starts at 13:09 in case u wanna skip 2 it!!!
The talking is the best!
The talking is the whole point so whoever skips is missing out!!!
The talking is why most of us are here, Hannah.
Here for the makeup, but 100% here for the talking.
We’re not skipping the whole point of us loving you 😝
"i want my eye shape to be my eye shape just adorned with shine" is the sentence that put into words what i've been feeling for years!
This 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Yes. I feel like for 2 or 3 for me. When I stopped feeling the need to darken / sculpt the outer corner of my eye.
i just want to say you are like a beauty scholar/philosopher, and this is why we love you! was waiting for the second part like some people wait for the next super hero movie.
oh my gosh that is perfectly said: a beauty philosopher! this is what these Hannah chats feel like :) I just love them!
Beauty Philosopher indeed! 👌
“His little Joe hair” 😂😂😂
Ooo I’d love a video about formality stages of makeup like the formality of fashion/style
wow. great idea!
That’s pretty interesting! Like what I quickly applied for the farmers market this morning versus the dressy family dinner last month.
"It didn't look fresh... chic... confident". Exactly! Tastes can change, and if we aren't open to change, we fossilize!
This!!!
I love this
comment so much
@@anotherlemontree Thank you!
You seem so much more comfortable today. Yesterday’s video felt awkward and unhappy. It’s so much better to see you like this 😊
Absolutely 🎉
Please feel free to find your comfort spot with video briefs
Number 2: I'm glad that you came right back with this video. If we never let our styles change, we'd still be doing 2016 makeup
If this 62 year old gal never let my style change then I would be doing 1977 makeup!
@@michellepike7125 a) I get it and b) I would love to see that!
Thanks for part 2, and for being so open about your journey. HLP doing introspection and philosophy is my number one favorite!
🥰
💯
yes! earlier this year I was getting ready for an event and tried “doing” my naturally wavy hair and it felt like prom hair to me?
"my makeup has changed because trends have changed"
THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUU
I've had this bee in my bonnet for a while and haven't made the time to post about it so you're getting my full ramble. You're welcome. 🤣
It's been a pet peeve of mine over the past couple of years, to hear creators talk about their makeup style changing and attribute it to getting older.
We LOVE a ‘I changed my mind “ moment. ❤ love being reflective and considerate and genuine. Thank you.
Evolution is a core human thing, I love your channel because you are deeply human and authentic. You are a person not a sitcom character.
Thank goodness we all change and evolve
The sequel has arrived!!
Lol the rewind. Its a nice reflection concept. Very thoughtful actually.
German expressionist make up play time! Yes! I love this idea.
THIS is why your channel is a gem 💎
Stunning as ever. Also I don't know why but I just remembered when you had an eye look with just the blue from the Gucci pallet and am wondering if that is something you still might wear. It was so pretty and chic. Does anyone else recall it cause I can't forget it?
Love that you actually filmed again the next day, and show us your thought process. I love both looks and love listening to you talk, so today and yesterday have been good to me:) xx
LOVE this look! The eyes are so glam, elegant and refined.
Beautiful Hannah, so many of us love you just as you are. Just be your own sweet self 🥰
I feel the same! Currently I like fresh and sheik and just a simple sheer shimmer on the lid with a bit of bronzer in the crease is all I want
With your evolved makeup style I am super interested to see your next makeup declutter / purge videos ❤
This is much more in line with the kind of makeup I normally do. I'm here for more of this kind of makeup content!!
Loved the makeup in the last video, but I also love the conclusions you came to here. You look great both ways, but I can see why you're more comfortable in something like this!
I really enjoyed this journey! I go through such mood swings over my makeup throughout the day & these videos have given me some better vocabulary to grapple with my feelings on this
I’d love to see your current dressy makeup looks with some color- I have amazing colorful eye shadows but haven’t found a way to use them for nights out that feels chic.
I really love that idea of Makeup to sculpt/transform vs makeup for fun/to embellish!
Also love the “doing my makeup for XYZ” and creating lewks for theoretical events
Love this so much! I feel like you help me to understand how to make glamour and everyday living come together ❤❤
Happened to see this Poston post land. Since I watched the previous video, I had to show my support!
Love this look! Chic, fresh, effortless!
Super excited to see more current glam looks/make up playtime. Would love your take on how to incorporate more color into these fresh glam looks!
Madeline! Right in the nostalgic feels. Loved this. This is why a new HLP podcast always goes straight to the top of the playlist.
Loved listening to your reflections at the beginning..so good to think about things, why are we doing what we are doing etc. God bless
So looking forward to the next exploration. It’s always surprising when you discover the inspiration for a new project. I imagine it must be exciting to find these moments, when you’ve been working and reworking this medium for 7 years!
Such an interesting pair of videos - certainly served a purpose and stirred up lots of interesting thoughts ❤
For me, your makeup advice is secondary to your commitments and observations on consumption, fashion purchasing, and life in general ❤.
A succesfull author and mother uses the word "zeitgeist" while talking about make-up. This is womanhood ♥
Is that what she was saying, I was wondering what that was? 😅😄
@rhinnbuck7766 Yes! It's the German world meaning "the spirit of the time", and it's widely used in Western philosophy.
it did not disappoint!! loved the look and loved hearing your thoughts. i am very excited for (fancy) make up playtime that aligns with this season of Hannah 💜
I've been catching up on your videos and must say this one excited me the most! My makeup style has evolved too similarly to yours. Looking forward to future makeup look videos 🥰
I think the physical changes in our brains really make a difference in who we are, as well as experience. Good to hear people's thoughts on this.
Oh I can’t wait to see your collection evolve with your tastes!
If I blink…when I blink…I blink…giggle
😂😂😂
I loved this bc I feel in the same chapter you are. I’m 39 and a mom of younger kids and it felt lovely and sentimental to reflect on my journey with makeup. I too used to do the smokey eye all the time and now find myself doing a sheer base with glitter or shimmer on top.
Glad you made this video.
I would love to see how you would work with the Urban Decay Naked palette both old looks and how you would use it with your current style preferences
