  • AC/DC's Brian Johnson and Billy Mitchell (Ex-Lindisfarne) perform a duet of the Geordie classic 'Geordie's Lost His Liggie' at 2006's Sunday for Sammy concert.
    DVD available from www.mawson-wareham.com/videos.htm
ABOUT SUNDAY FOR SAMMY: Following Geordie actor Sammy Johnson's sudden death in 1998, his friends Tim Healy and Jimmy Nail established the Sammy Johnson Memorial Fund in his memory. This is the fourth of what has now become a series of sell-out concerts on Tyneside in support of the fund. The event, staged this time at the Sage Gateshead, again captured the imagination of the people of the North-East and both shows sold out without any advertising.
A cast featuring Tim Healy, Jimmy Nail and Kevin Whately - Dennis, Oz and Neville from Auf Wiedersehen Pet, plus Brian Johnson, Denise Welch, Jill Halfpenny, Brendan Healy, John Miles, ex-Lindisfarne singer Billy Mitchell, Young Sinfonia, the Swing Bridge Singers and many, many more delivered two hours of scintillating music and comedy in memory of their pal Sammy.
75% of proceeds from the sale of this product will be donated to the Sammy Johnson Memorial Fund. The fund is managed by the Community Foundation and provides grants for talented young performers from the North East of England.

Brian Johnson -- former lead singer with the Geordie band, 'Geordie'(!) was unfortunately not at this years gig; but what a funny bugg... blighter he is! The Sunday for Sammy gigs are biannual charity fundraisers, a mix of great music & laugh-out-loud comedy.
Geordies are the indigenous population of Tyneside, North East England. The local language/dialect borrows heavily on Scandinavian as passed down from the Viking raiders centuries ago -- honest. Few non-Geordies ever understand it!

  • @oe2kb

The word 'liggie' for marble is sometimes substituted with the alternative 'penker' of 'penkah' as pronounced. A studio version may be listed under either term.
I doubt if Brian Johnson has ever recorded it, but hey - you never know... Hope springs maternal so the mis-quote goes.

    Wor Geordie -- Our George.
Liggie - Marble (a small coloured glass ball).
Wor Geordie's lost 'e's liggie -- Our George has unfortunately misplaced his marble.
The song tells the sorry tale of Geordie first loosing his marble, then finding it again in surprising circumstances. It is one of the less prominent Tyneside anthems, probably more commonly chanted in years past (as with many colloquial folk songs) but still well known amongst the Geordie (Tyneside) population.

    More Geordie words:
•Aad Gadgie -- A gentleman of pensionable age
    •Netty -- lavatory
•Clarty -- grimy (e.g. "Our Ginny, yar aal clarty!")
    •Dottle -- cigarette ash
    •Hinny -- a term of endearment
•Petal -- another term of endearment
•Y'buggah! -- an exclamation of astonishment
    •Howay -- come along
    •Ower -- over
    •Owt -- anything
•Canny -- of superior quality (not to be confused with the Scottish 'careful')
•Broon ale -- a dark, bottled liquid designed to calm the nerves
