Shogun the Novel by James Clavell amzn.to/4aeDsmP - Розваги
I was away when Shogun started but I'm hoping to get caught up as soon as possible. It looks great so far. Let me know what you think.
I too found the massive paperback on my parent’s bookshelf. It sort of called to me over many years as I noticed it so many times, yet avoided it because I was busy being young and fabulous. As fate would happen, I was in a space in my life where the book was my only option, so I plucked it off the shelf and proceeded to read. I learned SO much about a culture I’d only heard about before from WW2 movies and my own dad, who was on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific then.
I had watched the old miniseries prior to reading the book, but I don’t remember it having any impact. This new series certainly has my attention! So far, so GOOD.
Your review has been sorely missed and early awaited.
It's a great show! I see people comparing it to Game of Thrones and I agree! Thanks for covering it Pete!
pete can you also breakdown Constellation? its a sci fi series on apple TV.
I second the request to cover Constellation Pete!
Fun fact, the falcon is named Shogun and was born and trained specifically for this show. It was 2 months old when they started filming.
He was just a baby
This show is phenomenal. Glad you’re covering it. Your breakdowns are the best!
The book is better tho (I think), but the show is not bad either
@@zsigai4270show is so refreshing and every scene is mind-blowing and awestruck.
@@zsigai4270agreed, but that’s almost always the case. Only 4 episodes in, but I’m very happy with the show so far
One of my favorite parts is when the Englishman stands on deck and sees Osaka. The barbarian, cultureless people, somehow built a metropolis. Such a humbling experience.
Yessss! I’m glad you’re covering this! Shogun is amazing!
Mariko is one stunning lady…..
Very!
perv
I was hoping you were going to do this show. Thank you Pete!
Very happy to hear you throwing your heart in the mix. Looking forward to the rest of the season.
Thank you for covering this show, looking forward to your discussions👍
Amazing video! Please catch up to the last episode until fifth one comes.
might be one of the best shows i’ve seen in a minute
I thought they were calling English Portuguese the whole time cuz the Japanese didnt know the other countries existed?
Thank you for doing this one Ive loved Shogu since the 1980's version
Dope! I was hoping you'd jump on this show and do your thing! 🤙 Loving this show so far. Great cast, great setting, great story so far.
So glad you're doing this show
I’m so happy you’re covering Shogun!
11:12 Meaning behind the bow was to give props bc *_the man just fell off a cliff and CLIMBED BACK UP UNDER HIS OWN POWER._*
Thank you for covering this show! ❤
So glad you’re covering this! I haven’t been impressed with the other breakdown channels re: this show.
Love your content Pete, was hoping you might cover this one!
Fantastic breakdown. You rarely miss a beat!
Thank you for doing this show! Interested to see how it shakes out.
Oh my God thank you so much for these breakdowns. I am loving this series, but there is so much that has happened and it’s a little confusing but you’re videos are making it much more easy to understand and enjoy the series even more.
Thank you for covering the show!
Great acting shootout to the baby crying and smacking his mama on que when Mariko convinces her to let him die and not end herself. Rah PAINFUL. Great show 10 more prequel seasons please!
Show is really really good so far! Hope they keep it quality!
I was waiting for you to hop in this!!
There you are! I was waiting on this.
Great explanation!
Look forward to your breakdowns for this show!
I was waiting for this...Thanx!
i just now started to watch the show, good to see theres a breakdown for the episodes
Love this show! Just started watching it and can’t wait until the next episode.
Very helpfull!!
yey! Pete is doing Shogun!
Thanks!
Thanks for covering this! So far, it's very immersive. The costumes and sets are beautiful (especially considering it isn't even filmed in japan)
Thank You
It's probably because of the FX touch or the Tom Hardy / Cosmo similarities, but that show reminds me a lot of Taboo.
Glad to see you covering Shogun. It has been good so far. I remember the original mini-series from the 80s. I recently re-watched it on blu-ray
Best show Ive seen since The Expanse
Excellent show. The adapt or die theme has me pulled me in. I especially enjoy the lack of blind twists; When something critical happens it's always foreshadowed.
Damn. I accidentally came across you again. Wish I had refound you sooner. Loved you Expanse reviews.
Big love, Pete! Miss the height of Saul culture with you. I gotta get into some new shows,I guess!
Great show! As a fan of the novel & OG miniseries, I am quite enjoying this adaptation.
Best show in a very long time!
So are we not gonna talk about Yabu perving out with Kiku and lil dude?
Glad you decided to cover Shogun & Fallout. I'm hoping if Three Body Problem on Netflix is good you'll cover that as well. We have a great year of Television ahead of us. House Of The Dragon S2 & The Bear S3, and The Boys S4 in the summer followed by Rings Of Power S2, Squid Game S2 late summer. The Penguin, Sandman S2 & Silo S2 are targeting Q3 (Fall) and concluding the Q4 (Winter) with Dune Prophecy, Stranger Things S5, 1923 S2, and You S5. Despite the strikes we might still eat pretty good this year in terms of TV programming.
You always watch the good shows!!
any chance your planing on doing Constellation at all Pete?
Does anyone know how many chapters of the book are in episode 1 of the tv show? I'm trying to read ahead of each episode and didn't know how far in I need to read before I watch episode 1 and 2. Would someone who has read the book please share? Thank you!
This is the best show in years.
you good
Cover constellation too?
I want to know how often seppuku happened and the specific reason. Is an outburst really a good reason to end your bloodline?
Is there no other remedy for perceived dishonorable actions?
You can’t do anything to restore it like finding the Avatar?
Please who directed this movie?
9:05 As I have several Japanese friends named Mariko, the pronunciation of her name may be 'Ma - riko'
I love this actor playing the Anjin. He’s exactly how I pictured the character when I first read the book as an eleven year old. He seems realistic for his situation, clever and physically tough but not some roided up model
Loving this show so far aswell as constellation.
If you enjoy shogun i would definitely recommend Tom Hardys series Taboo from a few years ago.
I like it as well, this is how remake should be done.
I will NOT spoil anything. But the 4th episode blew me away. Especially the ending. I felt like there was something lacking up until episode 3. Now I'm all in!
I was going to tweet you late last week and ask if you were going to watch/cover this! Excited that you are, I see your follow-up-comment now and that makes sense. Looking forward to the ride.
I watched the original Mini series from the 1980s and it was awesome and I even have AD. VD copy of the whole series and I have bench. Watch it a couple of times
The show is epic 🔥🔥🔥
indeed
So glad you are cover this show @PetePeppers1 You are one of the best reviewers/creators out there!
I also read the book in my teens and again in my thirties really eenJoyed it
11:25 again its a matter of honor. The Anjin saw Yabu's decision to kill himself as a sign of honor to the dying sailor because he failed to save him.Thats why the Anjin bows to Yabu for he held such high reguard for the sailors life,A great deal more then what the Anjin would have ever anticipated as another sailor.
This show is sweet.
I am a big fan😢
Please cover more episodes.
That's the plan
"Avoiding subtitles" lol ahah
Japanese & WEstern Prosperous ReVival 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
The way the women hover is cool!
I haven't seen this breakdown I'm an avid reader of the book(s). So many things changed (I get some of them) but what was disappointing was the way Rodriguez was rescued by Yabu. It was so much better in the book and there was zero reason to change it. Same as the scene with Kiriko and the gay youth scene. You don't have to sacrifice authenticity for time. I guess so far I'm enjoying the show. I'll give it a solid 8. Sorry for commenting on a video I didn't watch but as I said, I very much enjoyed the books and the series previously done.
I was so tickled that the pilot episode was anjin, which means pilot
So are the finish sailors speaking finish or English?
just finished the 1st ep and watched this video, why does Toranaga have the heir's mother hostage?
The villager getting beheaded for praying infront of blackthorn made me rewatch it 2 times cus how messed up it was.
Thank God youtube let's us speed up the play speed. 1.5x is perfect. Otherwise I'd lose patience
No one’s talking about how, when reaching Osaka suddenly John blackthorne’s were tied from the front in the confrontation scene with Rodriguez and at the back in the next frame 😂😂😂
John Blackthorne can dislocate his shoulders. There, an explanation 😊
The Portuguese/ English thing seems weird to me. If they're going to have subtitles for 70% of the dialogue already why not have the characters actually speaking Portugese? They are clearly dedicated to authenticity
I understood it as we are meant to see Blackthorne as "ours" and Japanese as "foreign". Having him speak Portuguese could make him feel foreign as well.
Effectively, I took it as if the show was dubbed from Portuguese to English.
But assuming that the other people on the ship were dutch, they should also speak dutch then. Basically only english speaker is blackthorne I would think.
🤔Isn't half a century 50 ?? (Referring to years) I wasn't the guy whom would ace Maths or History during schooling days but I'm pretty sure 1st white guy in Japan went further back
Marco Polo is another good "Stranger in a Strange Land" series with 2 seasons on Netflix.
Just now covering this?
How does this version compare to the 1980s version. I loved that version and own it.
I think it’s better!!!!
@@leekathyw I need to check this out then. Thank you.
Richard Alpert’s finally starting to age 👴
Only Sumurai had names, everyone else like farmers was called farmers etc
Please explain that weird scene where the female samurai sexually assaults the bad guy's son.
Pete you late to the party; we already know
Holy moly this is insanely complicated to keep straight. These names are all jumbled up… You know it’s confusing when even the “explanation” is complicated too
👍🏾⭕️👌🏾
The 1980 version of Shogun is far better. It had better storyline, more likeable characters, better music, acting was much better & much closer to the actual novel. Go and see the 1980 version.
fuuuuuck no
Nah
6:43 you lack the understanding of honor.
Why they boiled the guy?
REVERSE ISEKAI !!!
So many ads bruh
Three episodes in and imo, it makes the original 1980 miniseries pale by comparison. Letter perfect casting, great writing, production design, direction, editing and score. The stunt work is excellent and there's gorgeous cinematography on view throughout... Last but not least, no detail is too small to be ignored by the film makers/showrunners in this version and their attention to detail, is meticulous. What more can you ask for, Pete?..
I really love the original but I love the more subtle and realistic characterizations by these actors, especially Toranaga.
@@joyfulgirl91 The original was great for the longest time. Three great Japanese leads in Toshiro Mifune (Toranaga), Yoko Shimada (Mariko), and Frankie Sakai (Yabu), but I couldn't buy into Richard Chamberlain as Blackthorne... Even as Cosmo Jarvis may sound as though he's channelling Richard Burton, I'm enjoying his performance better as that character. Hiroyuki Sanada made everything he's been in better and in this, he's really nailed nuance in his playing Toranaga. Eyes being the window to his soul and they lead you to sense the wheels turning in his head as he plots his next move. The Regents council scenes were brilliant. Also, I really love what Anna Sawai is portraying in her take on Lady Mariko and Tadanobu Asano's duplicitous Lord Yabushige is less arch and more subtle in his scheming ways.
Historical accuracy, would have been to have the Portuguese actually speaking...Portuguese. At least they could have mimicked shows like ex Vikings, where they start out in the native language but switch over to English. If not anything more, than at least to establish a difference. The fact that the Portuguese characters are played by actual Portuguese, makes it even weirder. But I guess the Anglos find it too hard to read subtitles for more than 3 minutes in a row..
Has anyone in the comments actually read the book ? Ghastly people.
Not speaking Portuguese is a good idea... to you. I'm Portuguese, so I'm the one who has to endure subtitles every time! Cheers.
Hahahahahahhahaha
