Yes, Toranaga is lying. Everyone is lying constantly. All these people were contemporaries of Nobunaga and Hydeyoshi. By now, lying is living. The truth is rude, ungraceful and disharmonious. Of course he wants to be shogun. He’ll use anyone to get it done, kill whoever it takes. Super late to watching your breakdown, which i now know is a BIG MISTAKE. I love your insights here. Let me just add a few things to help recontextualize some stuff while keeping the lines “history is written by the victors” in mind. The first few minutes revealed that Mariko was unaware of his father’s plans and held contempt for Hidekatsu Toda-sama even then, and i didnt know this until this episode, she views him as below her station, or beneath her in ranking, as evidenced by her comment in the flashback about how her father is discarding him; also telling Ruri-hime (Ochiba sama) what a joke and worth less alliance it was to marry her off to the Toda family;and also by his comment to Toranaga about how his father should have married her better.
And so, when Toranaga revealed truth bombs to her, clearing up her misunderstanding, i was literally shouting at the screan “YES! THANK YOU!” So much so that the next door neighbour knocked on my door to check if i was OK. Lol😅😅😅 Also, though her words were subtitled “i have failed my father”, it could have also been translated as “I have betrayed my father’s trust” as in she betrayed him for wishing for death instead of noticing the great plans and hopes she placed on her when he married her off to a lesser house. And it puts Hidekatsu Toda-sama in a more sympathetic light, though of course, we still disapprove of the Domestic violence. But put yourself in the man's shoes. Mariko looked down on her and that marriage even before they were married. Hated him for sparing her life. and have been ice cold towrds here for the length of their marriage. That would drive any man bitter and resentful. which brings into question whether or not the physical abuse is a more recent occurrence or not (still not a good look and not something to be condoned either way); and if he had always acted harshly towards her in turn from the start or not, or if that was his defence mechanism toward's mariko's cold treatment towards her.
My wife and I just started watching Shogun and just finished episode 6. This is my favorite show of the year now. I hold the original Shogun in very high regard. I've read the book but only once and a long time ago. So getting to watch this is like rediscovering Shogun. My wife commented that Ochibe moves like a snake, I have to agree with her. I love this version more than the original, because of the change of focus. I don't like the actor playing Blackthorn but I can live with him. He does an okay job but he's not in the league of the other actors. I requested the book from my local library, of course someone has it checked out right now. We'll be watching Episode 7 tonight and I can't wait to come back here to see your video for it.
Great breakdown I didn’t catch that she stopped translating once that flashback hit her! She tryna stay on her mission but love is pulling her the other way!
I haven't read the original novel. It seems to me that this adaptation and the original TV mini-series are excellent presentations of the culture and practices of feudal Japan. I like it.
I've read the book and around page 900 I started to resent, that he didn't write a historic novel based on the real events. I started getting more interested in the real events and the wikipedia articles of the historic persons
Pete the fact that your smitten by Soji, as am I, could not be hidden by any amount of subterfuge. The eroticisms of denial and restraint posed by chasteness are omnipresent and add a flavor of anticipation and drama for all involved. Pass the salt Peter... please.
If Kiku's subtle metaphor of "noticing the absence of a thing" was directed at Mariko - to help unlock her feelings towards Blackthorne - she really knows how to get inside the 8-fold blind!
I was completely lost in this episode. The subtitles are so fast that it's hard to read and pay attention to the action onscreen. And the characters all have similar haircuts and facial hair, so it's hard to distinguish them.
could also be about Toranaga wanting to show that Anjin should be considered a full fledged follower of his, since some of the men (notably Buntaro and Omi) still struggle to treat him as anything but a "barbarian". After all Kiku is not just a prosititute, she is a high-class courtesan whose services aren't offered to just anyone. By showing Kiku and Gin leading Anjin from the Teahouse in public they openly show that he is to be considered and important and valued follower of Toranaga's, especially since it seems to be public knowledge that he was the one who arranged Kiku's services for Blackthorn. Which makes it extra infuriating for Omi of course. You can see that he is struggling to keep his composure as he witnesses the two.
Ok, so I'm about to start a fight. I might be picky, but I've noticed that the closeup shots of John Blackthorn him make him look like a stooped over Frankenstein. This gives me the belief that the photographer for the closeups must be a short guy. It may be because he's taller than the rest of the cast!
It's funny how at first yabushige was portrayed as a ruthless man who likes to see others suffer but ever since then he's been trying to save his own ass
@@leonrussell9607That was obvious but what I would like to know is where Ochiba ran to when her father was killed and how she stayed so close to court at the same time, to be suggested as a concubine for Taiko.
Seriously tho. For a culture that had a lot of actors use masks when on stage japanese actors have some of the best facial acting ever. They say so much with just the subtlest of movements, and Fuji absolutely gets the best moments to emote during the show.
Why ochiba dont hate mariko when her father killed her father? just coz Ochiba, felt , mariko father was just doing Toranaga work ? obviously I am not in his shoes or experience anything like her, but I would think , no matter who is the mastermind , anyone who plan or kill my parents, I would likely can't dislike and can't be frds with their children
I was thinking the same thing. They were friends, but the situation with their fathers changed both their lives. I doubt ochiba would have been a courtesan if her farther weren't murdered. I also think there is more with toranaga asking Mariko about her relationship with ochiba back in the day. Given their history I feel like he may ask her to try to talk with ochiba.
"The victors write the history": Not always. Ever hear of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle? The Anglo-Saxons lost in 1066, but the Chronicle was still being updated a century later. Think the Normans were doing that work? Nuh-uh.
history is written by the victors... except for the Greek Histories (Polybius) Jewish history (First temple, Second temple, Josephus, the Holocaust)... basically history is written by those who write history, and not the "victors."
So did Blackthorne get it on with Kiku or not? Did Mariko join Blackthorne and swap out with Kiku? Blackthorne didn't seem interested in Kiku and her services.
Ok, heres a cool theory. [Preface: i have not read the book nor watched the ‘85 minisiries, but i am aware of the details of the battle of sekigahara in broad strokes] What if Ochiba-sama is playing everyone, including the audience all along? What if she is manipulating Ishido to act more rashly and brutally so that his actions would lead to his allies abandoning him? What if she urges him to display his power by leaving Osaka castle and try to engage Toranaga in an open field? 200 plus women and Taiko-sama cant concieve. What if (and this is a deviation from the historical Tokugawa) the Heir, Ochiba’s son, IS Toranaga’s child? But thats just a wild theory on my part.
@@shubhamyadav8484 yep, but thats irrelevant as she is consciously and purposefully witholding information. Point is she is talking to Ishido in such a way that she is manipulating him to take more and more drastic actions. Thus the wild theory that she actually wants Ishido dead. But thats just one of my theories about this out of many. Tell me more what you think!
interesting that the complete fabrication of Marikos entire story how very real and accurate Ochiba/Cha Cha's story is. Why Mitsuhide Akechi deserves a flashback over Nagamasa Azai is another travesty.
Nothing regarding the Geisha bowing to Anjin after their night together and its implication? It was a big deal in the book, as it was in this episode...
in my eyes her story change to the 80s series is more unrealistic. i dont think that a woman can play the game in that time of japan. but however as a story it is quite nice and very well acted
11:29 i dont even know how you would make such a subtle movement of the eyes like that. would never of caught that on initial viewing. so does Fuji know the man she is consort to is sleeping with Mariko?
Hard to miss the fact your room mate is having sex when walls are made of rice paper 😂 Besides Fuji wasn't into Anjin at the time and she knows Marko never had love for a man in her life
I think Ochiba's acting is bit too corny in the show, I think the actress is trying to hard to make the audience hate her which is too obvious and not genuine to me!
I loved a nuance included within the bargaining between Mariko and Gin over the price of John's visit to the Tea House that centered around the lacquer tea cups. After Gin points out the "lovely" lacquer cups in an apparent slight to her hostesses, Fuji apologizes citing the earthquake for causing great damage and loss for everyone in the city. Gin's self control of her words, expressions, and handling of the tea cup were amazing and pronounced by her graceful return of the her cup to the tray capped by the delicate, but very noticeable sound of the cup softly, but firmly, landing on the tray. I don't believe I've seen a show with this level of attention of detail since Downton Abbey.
I don't care about historical fact I don't care this happened in Naruto universe As long it's fun, engaging I am for it Don't care about the old shogun, watch it clip from it, not very interesting I am late watching this new shogun, it's already past 3 episode that's when I begin to watch it weekly because of a few clips from the show
I’m so sick of saying that these characters are based on historical people. These characters are based on fictional characters from a novel. Those characters are loosely based on historical characters. But a copy of a copy will grow further from the original with every copy. This is the third or fourth reiteration of this story. The truth, the novel, the 1980 television series, and now this iteration. These are not historical figures. These are not historical events. This is a fictional story based on copies of copies
“Those characters (from the novel) are loosely based on historical characters”. - you said it yourself. This is all that has ever been said and if you’re reading more into it; that’s on you.
Dude, no one (but you) cares. We only care it's a good show, for change. The people and events this is 'possibly' based on have been dead and buried for hundreds of years.
Historical facts are often more shocking than novels or TV dramas. Lady Ochiba became the lover of the man who killed her first father, her second father and her mother. And Ochiba gave birth to a boy who killed his parents. Ochiba (Yodo) has three sisters. However, she was in conflict with her two younger sisters and became their enemies. from japan
While the show is better than a lot out there I still find it lacking. There's zero chemistry between Blackthorn and Mariko. They seem to miss great opportunities for emotional moments through out the series. I'll probably keep watching, but it's not as good as I hoped.
@@thelukos he seemed to annoy her a lot with her outwardly expressing it a lot she even seemed annoyed with him when he was with Kiku when she said "By not making a scene for both our sakes." it's a very different presentation from the novel and 80s mini-series the 2024 version of Mariko comes off harsh and cold with Blackthorne the 1980 version and novel version of Mariko comes off kind and warm with Blackthorne

"A man may go to war for many reasons: conquest, pride, power.* But a woman is simply at war." More clearly with each episode, the theme of 'Shogun' is Power: who has it, who hasn't; who has 'agency' and who hasn't; conversely, who is a victim and who isn't. Likewise on the domestic level, it's always a question of who has power and who is able to resist power. Peace, yes. Control; again, yes. What it is NOT interested in is good and evil. Religion not excepted. This marks it as the fruit of post-modern thinking about sex and gender roles. Toranaga reveals to Mariko at the end of this episode, "Your father once told me he wished you'd been born a man." *Feminist B.S. I never heard my father, a gunner in WWII, mention any of these. Nor my bother, who fought in Viet Nam. Nor my great-grandfather, killed in the Civil War.
I found this episode to be incredibly dull. They must've been trying to save some money after the earthquake episode, or something. Plus, I'm not afraid to admit that I don't know what the hell is happening most of the time. So many names and clans, etc... As a result, I gotta watch videos like this after the fact.
If Ochiba respected Taiko she would grow to like Torunaga as his best friend over the years. Taiko surely spoke greatly of him to her. But then again it would make more sense for her to hate Taiko due to all the unwanted sex and drugs that came with his service. If she hated him then why be pissed off that he's dead and want to stay in the game of having to fuck men to get favors... She would want to be left alone if she was a real person.
*The series is good but has dropped the ball in some many places. One simple example is Mariko reads his ships log. Remember Mariko speaks Japanese and Portuguese. John speaks Portuguese and English as he is an English man. They speak to one another in Portuguese but we hear English for the benefit of the entire show not being subtitled. What's my point? The Ship's logs on an English ship crewed by English men would be written in ENGLISH! Mariko would not be able to read them! Yet she tells him "I read your deeds in your own words." How?*
The crew is English. All Protestant English men. The Dutch lie is their cover. I lived in London for 3 years. English men only speak English (mostly). But if you need to believe this is the one show in history without a plot hole so be it. Do go look at the thread “where are the Black people” you will really be triggered 😂
Ok. Did a little research. To plug this plot hole it is entirely plausible that the ship logs were written in Latin. Up until the mid-15th Century that was the norm and its conceivable the practice continued into the 16th Century. This may be especially true with a Dutch ship with an English crew.

Also, though her words were subtitled “i have failed my father”, it could have also been translated as “I have betrayed my father’s trust” as in she betrayed him for wishing for death instead of noticing the great plans and hopes she placed on her when he married her off to a lesser house.
I've been waiting for this review
I haven't read the original novel. It seems to me that this adaptation and the original TV mini-series are excellent presentations of the culture and practices of feudal Japan. I like it.
Mariko is absolutely gorgeous 😍😍😍
Well done! Loved your review!
Maybe someone can help me understand?
how does Ochiba have any power? what's her leverage?
I've read the book and around page 900 I started to resent, that he didn't write a historic novel based on the real events. I started getting more interested in the real events and the wikipedia articles of the historic persons
Pete, please do "From", really need your deep dives for the show!
Pete the fact that your smitten by Soji, as am I, could not be hidden by any amount of subterfuge. The eroticisms of denial and restraint posed by chasteness are omnipresent and add a flavor of anticipation and drama for all involved. Pass the salt Peter... please.
I love how Mariko didn't properly translate between Kiko and Blackthorn to avoid their flirting 😂
When is episode 7 review coming out?
What was the significance of Kiku escorting Anjin back to his home?
In the book she bowed him home partly to gain a reputation as a courtesan and partly to get Omi jealous
could also be about Toranaga wanting to show that Anjin should be considered a full fledged follower of his, since some of the men (notably Buntaro and Omi) still struggle to treat him as anything but a "barbarian".
Can someone please explain Mariko and Rori's backstory? Who's father is who? And who got killed by whom?
Ochibas dad was the guy beheading the men in the flashback and was the ruler before the taiko
Marikos dad killed ochibas dad
@@leonrussell9607That was obvious but what I would like to know is where Ochiba ran to when her father was killed and how she stayed so close to court at the same time, to be suggested as a concubine for Taiko.
@@glacialimpala ochiba is still the daughter of the former ruler of Japan, why couldn't she stay close to the court?
Love this show.. a lot..
2:36 12:30 12:50 13:36
there is a rumor in Japan that the real father of Hideyori Toyotomi is MItsunari Ishida.
would probably visit this channel again if there weren't so many ads
Kiku she is Ishido "SPY"
Are you going to watch constellation?
Seriously tho. For a culture that had a lot of actors use masks when on stage japanese actors have some of the best facial acting ever. They say so much with just the subtlest of movements, and Fuji absolutely gets the best moments to emote during the show.
Unrelated to this video but will love see do your review on From tv series on mgm+
This show is so good.
A drug to help her conceive is an interesting way of putting it.
You have to love how UA-cam is the closest thing to a Time Machine we have.
Didn't Mariko's father kill Oda Nobunaga?
Yes Mitsuhide Akechi betrayed Nobunaga at Honnoji
I just finished watching it like 2 minutes ago
The first one was messed up
Why ochiba dont hate mariko when her father killed her father? just coz Ochiba, felt , mariko father was just doing Toranaga work ?
obviously I am not in his shoes or experience anything like her, but I would think , no matter who is the mastermind , anyone who plan or kill my parents, I would likely can't dislike and can't be frds with their children
Nuh-uh.
Honor or Death! Best show since Game of Thrones. 🇯🇵
history is written by the victors... except for the Greek Histories (Polybius) Jewish history (First temple, Second temple, Josephus, the Holocaust)... basically history is written by those who write history, and not the "victors."
So did Blackthorne get it on with Kiku or not? Did Mariko join Blackthorne and swap out with Kiku? Blackthorne didn't seem interested in Kiku and her services.
I will hate when this ends...is there a season 2?
No. There's only a few more episodes left.
I personally really like this series. It took me 2 episodes to get into it. But once you do. Oh boy! Thanks for uploading. Have a wonderful day!
I was getting confused when they would show the two girls when they were young. I couldn’t keep it straight which one was which.
Yeah me too. Also I still don't know who their dads are and who killed who.
Ok, heres a cool theory.
[Preface: i have not read the book nor watched the ‘85 minisiries, but i am aware of the details of the battle of sekigahara in broad strokes]
What if Ochiba-sama is playing everyone, including the audience all along? What if she is manipulating Ishido to act more rashly and brutally so that his actions would lead to his allies abandoning him? What if she urges him to display his power by leaving Osaka castle and try to engage Toranaga in an open field? 200 plus women and Taiko-sama cant concieve. What if (and this is a deviation from the historical Tokugawa) the Heir, Ochiba’s son, IS Toranaga’s child? But thats just a wild theory on my part.
I also thought she is about to tell Ishido that the heir is actually Toranaga's child. But then she delivers that fate dialogue.
Now what are the toys tha she introduced him to in the book?
The tyco was her grandfather
interesting that the complete fabrication of Marikos entire story how very real and accurate Ochiba/Cha Cha's story is. Why Mitsuhide Akechi deserves a flashback over Nagamasa Azai is another travesty.
Nothing regarding the Geisha bowing to Anjin after their night together and its implication? It was a big deal in the book, as it was in this episode...
A geisha is not a prostitute. This is a courtesan.
@@genremags8317 and I didn't say she was. I referred to the scene and the book, which was a big deal.
She’s an INTERPRETER not a translator
in my eyes her story change to the 80s series is more unrealistic. i dont think that a woman can play the game in that time of japan. but however as a story it is quite nice and very well acted
Women ☕ =/= 😡
Fuji ☕ = 👍😁
11:29 i dont even know how you would make such a subtle movement of the eyes like that. would never of caught that on initial viewing.
so does Fuji know the man she is consort to is sleeping with Mariko?
Hard to miss the fact your room mate is having sex when walls are made of rice paper 😂 Besides Fuji wasn't into Anjin at the time and she knows Marko never had love for a man in her life
I think Ochiba's acting is bit too corny in the show, I think the actress is trying to hard to make the audience hate her which is too obvious and not genuine to me!
If I was Blackthorne, I would be hooking-up with Fuji. She is fine, and also a safer choice.
I'm not sure if she's willing
Fuji is like a thief. Always a scene to steal.
That was the most boring brothel ever..great episode but they needed some more entertainment at these places.😂ofc I'm sure the ending was happy😅
I don't care about historical fact
I don't care this happened in Naruto universe
As long it's fun, engaging I am for it
Don't care about the old shogun, watch it clip from it, not very interesting
I am late watching this new shogun, it's already past 3 episode that's when I begin to watch it weekly because of a few clips from the show
So the Church is super villain here too. 🙄

Yes. Just as in real life
lol you think the Church has ever been the good guys?!? You haven’t been paying close enough attention my friend.

Youre sick😮
Settle down Beavis…
Dude, no one (but you) cares. We only care it's a good show, for change. The people and events this is 'possibly' based on have been dead and buried for hundreds of years.
Historical facts are often more shocking than novels or TV dramas. Lady Ochiba became the lover of the man who killed her first father, her second father and her mother.
And Ochiba gave birth to a boy who killed his parents.
Ochiba (Yodo) has three sisters. However, she was in conflict with her two younger sisters and became their enemies.

東京吉原、遊女、花魁😅😅😅💋💋💋🙏🙏🙏
While the show is better than a lot out there I still find it lacking.
There's zero chemistry between Blackthorn and Mariko.
They seem to miss great opportunities for emotional moments through out the series.
I'll probably keep watching, but it's not as good as I hoped.
Same
I honestly missed that the praying scene was supposed to be intimate.
I felt he was annoying her 😂
@@thelukos he seemed to annoy her a lot with her outwardly expressing it a lot
she even seemed annoyed with him when he was with Kiku when she said "By not making a scene for both our sakes."
it's a very different presentation from the novel and 80s mini-series
the 2024 version of Mariko comes off harsh and cold with Blackthorne
the 1980 version and novel version of Mariko comes off kind and warm with Blackthorne
He was disrespectful trying to over pray her prayers he had no intend of praying until he heard her. He was clearly showing his lack of respect for the latin language aka the Catholic church aka the Portuguese/ Spanish. He wants her to feel the same way to help him get them out .just so england could do the same things even worst later by way of the united states( the eldest and most rebellious child of England)
I’m confused why oshibas son isn’t considered a shogun
He's still a little boy and is the heir, the council of regents are in control until he comes of age
@@leonrussell9607 I get that part. But I guess I’m confused what differentiates: a taiko, emperor, and shogun.
@@rickardred17 emperor is the ruler of Japan, shogun is the military ruler
The emperor is mostly a figurehead while the shogun has the real power
The taiko was born a peasant and is not of a noble bloodline so couldn't be called shogun but filled the same position
@@leonrussell9607 thanks man that’s helpful. So should Toranaga become shogun, there wouldn’t be a Taiko anymore? And has the show shown who the current emperor is?
@@rickardred17 the taiko is dead and the emperor hasn't made an appearance, but he's pretty much worthless
I feel bad for Buntaro tho', she got cuckold after he's trying to save her wife from suicide and saving Toranaga.

"A man may go to war for many reasons: conquest, pride, power.* But a woman is simply at war."
More clearly with each episode, the theme of 'Shogun' is Power: who has it, who hasn't; who has 'agency' and who hasn't; conversely, who is a victim and who isn't. Likewise on the domestic level, it's always a question of who has power and who is able to resist power. Peace, yes. Control; again, yes. What it is NOT interested in is good and evil. Religion not excepted. This marks it as the fruit of post-modern thinking about sex and gender roles.
Toranaga reveals to Mariko at the end of this episode, "Your father once told me he wished you'd been born a man."
*Feminist B.S.
I've been able to keep track of the story and characters for the most part but this episode had me lost af🤣
@@DaKiDDKAYCSo glad to hear that I wasn't the only one.
What a dull episode
The Erasmus is a Dutch ship. Mariko knows Latin as well.
The crew is English. All Protestant English men. The Dutch lie is their cover. I lived in London for 3 years. English men only speak English (mostly). But if you need to believe this is the one show in history without a plot hole so be it. Do go look at the thread “where are the Black people” you will really be triggered 😂
@@spratmajor2576the crew is Dutch, only blackthorne is English
@@spratmajor2576 I thought the same thing
Ok. Did a little research. To plug this plot hole it is entirely plausible that the ship logs were written in Latin. Up until the mid-15th Century that was the norm and its conceivable the practice continued into the 16th Century. This may be especially true with a Dutch ship with an English crew.
Exceptional synopsis and direction of this episode. So much so I’m subscribed to this channel and dropping another one.
It's boring. Sorry but the whole show is a snooze fest. BORING.
