After watching this show many times, I’m convinced that Raj was unsuccessful with the opposite sex when sober because he was (maybe still is) ensconced in co-dependency.
When drunk he let that go and owned what he thought and felt, his awkwardness was reframed as a positive when he wasn’t concerned with pleasing others. Even Summer Glau was getting engagement.
When you do that consistently in every scenario, people respect you more. Awkwardness turns around.

I can't help but feel that the writers deliberately wanted Raj to be EXTREMELY PATHETIC when he even needn't be! I very well know that it is his character but in many many instances they went overboard with it and I absolutely hated it! Like when he got completely bare and stark naked from head to toe in between the whole cafe and in other places where his accent was deliberately dumbed down to sound more pathetic than typical Indian!
They always want to portray Indians and many Asians as dumb people. I mean the English TV shows as well as Hollywood movies. 😂
