There's an important thing that was missed in this video! The instructions from Cascade are telling you to use way too much detergent. I've made a follow-up video about detergent dosing and also addressed a lot of your concerns in it. ua-cam.com/video/Ll6-eGDpimU/v-deo.html If packs were sold with, maybe, tear-off baby packs meant to be thrown in along with the main wash, I'd be elated. And, to be clear, it's not like I think packs, tabs, whatever don't work - I'm sure plenty of you have fine experiences with them. They just... well as I said they don't make sense to me. Not for a dishwasher, anyway!
I love your videos and you always make me laugh. ...and I share your ire with these pods, we switched back to regular liquid soap after some experiments of our own.
Is there any way I can contact you in a more professional way? I did a project on WED for my final project this semester and found some information on the Capital Subway in my research. (I also referenced your haunted mansion video in my paper, so your work is greatly appreciated!)
I use the packs but I have never just tossed them in the main body of the dishwasher. I have always put them in the detergent area of the dishwasher. I have not been told otherwise and I never really stopped to look at the instructions and these packs work great unless they have sat too many years as I do have a habit of only buying them on sale.
Now maybe tell your wife (or you, if you're the culprit) to stop letting your dirty dishes sit around drying out and then you won't need an extra wash cycle to clean your dishes.
I don't know why but my two year old loves this video. He has watched it during breakfast the past three days straight. Thanks for the learning and the chance to drink my coffee.
@@xanderplayz3446 welcome to modern parenting. The number of people who do this at restaurants or hotels isn't small. To be fair, Alec's videos might even have somewhat of a positive effect. Idk.. Better than many shows for kids.
Okay, you actaully made me look at my Dishwashers Owner's manual. This is a BOSCH and I am located in Germany, for reference. The dishwasher does not have a pre-wash compartment. In the instructions it says (roughly translated) "Attention: due to the different activation time of detergent tablets you might have inferior cleaning power with short-running programs. We recommend powder detergent". Furthermore: "If you use powder detergent, we recommend pouring in a little extra directly into the tub for intensive cleaning, in addition to the detergent dispenser".
I suspect the bit about short-running programs has something to do with the water temperature again since hot water should dissolve the detergent tablets faster. I'm German too but have yet to ever buy or install a dishwasher so I don't know if ours are usually hooked up to hot water too.
@@TechnologyConnections It's just uncommon at least in German dishwashers. It is not really necessary, at least with the programmes used by the dishwashers here. On the other hand, using dishwasher salt for descaling the water is absolutely normal and seems quite uncommon in the US. It's just interesting to see the different "traditions" that have evolved in dishwasher operations. You would expect that how to wash dishes would be quite the same all over the world. So for the Bosh-Models having only one compartment seems to be more a thing of that tradition and not so much from giving into pods.
What I can't believe is the pod manufacturers haven't got onto this and developed pre wash pods which are 1/4 the size, another consumer product right there!
and they could even allow consumers to remain lazy by not even tearing them apart, some models just place the small side in the pre-wash side, other models without a prewash slot just leave it dangling out LOL still using cascade powder . . . i can find it at only one out of FIVE walmarts around here
@@red2theelectricboogaloo961 Think you missed his point entierly there bud. Hes saying they could make the smaller packs with almost no extra effort and sell both. A whole new product line with almost no effort to develope

Because of your video, we checked our GE dishwasher - and yep - there's a depression in the dispenser lid for the pre-wash cycle. And - oh, yeah - filters. Hadn't touched the filters since the washer was installed 7-1/2 years ago. It was a special date night to clean-out the filters and their surroundings of "black, greasy goop. @Biden DidntWin I didn't know about running the hot water before starting the dishwasher until recently. Sometimes I forget anyways. My dishwasher cleans everything perfectly either way. Been using powdered detergent my whole life. Also, according to my dishwasher manual, you don't need as much detergent if you live in an area with soft water. I live in an area with very soft water, so I started filling the pre-wash/main-wash cups 1/3rd full or less. Still cleans dishes perfectly.
What i really appreciate is that the subtitles aren't just left as they were generated, but are actually proofread, have interpunction added etc. 10/10 experience.
I tried the tips in this video, running the tap hot first, and added pre-wash soap, and damn this really helped. My dishes and the dishwasher tub itself are spotless after the wash. Good stuff.
Another tip: if your dish washer smells like wet dog, clean the filter, then spritz little bleach in the tub and run a rinse & hold cycle with high heat and without any dishes.
@@mikallund334 and that is exactly what the vid says is not necessary if u use the heavy duty cycle, pre wash detergent and turn your hot water on till it's warm.
I clicked on this video and thought "Why half an hour long?" and thought I'll skip when I get bored. Well, I have now watched 18 of these videos and I can honestly say, for reasons unknown, I have watched without skipping and enjoyed everyone. All other UA-camrs right now: "Happy Christmas! Christmas special, review of the year video!" Technology Connections: "Here's a 30 minute video about dishwashers" Never change, my friend. Never change.
I just moved into a rental with a dishwasher for the first time last month and I absolutely didn't know anything about how to use one. I always had a lot of doubts about those little colorful packs. So I stumbled on your video trying to figure it out! And boy am I glad I did, I tried it for the first time last night and it worked like a dream. Washing dishes remains one of my least favorite things to do, and now I only have to do it for a few things that aren't dishwasher safe!! We have moderately hard water here, and even then filling up the cups only halfway worked perfectly. Thank you so much for this and your follow up video!
I just want to comment to show my respect for the fact that you cut a hole in a dishwasher and re-sealed it for the purposes of educating your viewers. Bloody good work!
Hey! 3 years into the future! I watched this 3 years ago when it came out, and I can say I'm STILL not using the pods at all, not even for my laundry. It saved me a TON of money and I don't even need to throughly clean my dishes before the dishwasher. My dishwasher came with my house and it's an old white appliance that's old and yellow. Thought it was broken at first and almost bought a new one, but after learning how to properly use it, it STILL works like a champ. Thanks for this tip you've really saved me a ton of money!
@Tom Says I don’t actually care either and I don’t think it matters in the context of what he was doing. I was making a point about how I’ve had that happen in a customers home with hard wood and that’s what it made me think of.
Appliance Repair Technician here. 7:36 The "second hidden sensor" for water level you pointed to is actually the High-Limit Thermostat which opens at 200°F in the case that the heating element runs away.
I'm well aware that "thermal runaway" is a technical term but I'm choosing to forget that for this particular sentence because that makes it far better.
@@arienh4 I should probably have said in the case that the heating element is permanently energized by the relay located on the Electronic Control Board. I was making an analogy which is similar to that of a runaway train as a type of slang. I really appreciate his efforts to remain accurate and informative. A major part of my job is to educate customers regarding misuse.
tl;dr from both this and the followup: - Don't worry about rinsing dishes before putting it into the dishwasher - Heat sink water before turning on Dish Washer - Use the 'Normal Setting' on your dishwasher to make sure the pre-wash happens - Use powder Detergent (DON'T use dish soap, pods, or gels) - Place in both the main wash, and pre-wash cups - Don't use TOO much - the amount you need correlates with how hard your water is. If you have a powdery residue or film on dishes, you may be using too much. Try filling it halfway - Don't sweat whether or not it has phosphates - Get rinse-aid, it can not be included in detergent - Consider getting a dishwasher cleaning product, like Glisten Dishwasher cleaner
Wdym? He said powder or gels were good, the only things he advised against were pods and dish soap, the kind you use to hand clean dishes which bubbles a lot. He never said anything about dishwasher soap as a gel.
I have never owned a dishwasher, either in the states or in Europe, where I did not have to wash the dishes before putting them in the washer. All those things are good for is rinsing and sterilizing. EDIT: Ok. I decided to try out your advice, Technology Connections. I put my dirty dishes in the washer, not even scraping them. Ran the hot water until it came up, and put a pack in the pre-wash and the wash receptacles. My washer only has a bottom sprayer, so I was not full of hope. But, one hour later, I open my machine, and Voila! Everything was spanking clean! Wow! This will save me a lot of labor and time, which is important as a single father of three. Can't thank you enough!
My great grandfather used to sell dishwashers. Remember in this video, they say the physics of dishwashers haven’t changed much 😉 He used to have a party, and my great grandmother bake a fullsized chocolate cake (frosting and everything), which he would take the plate and whole cake and set it inside the dishwasher. Run a cycle, and when it was done, the plate was clean and the cake was gone.
It will also save a LOT of water. Handwashing dishes uses a lot more water than a dishwasher, and if you use warm or hot water you are also paying to heat that extra water as well.
I always thought that I didn't quite grasp how a dishwasher gets the job done and this video proves it. I'll never scrape my plates again before loading and I'm going to start using the gel detergent instead of the packs. And since it's only about 1 gal of water/cycle I'm not going to obsess any longer about the tens of gallons of water that I thought was being wasted! This is one of your most practical and fascinating videos. Much appreciated.
@Jonas Hack Popcorn button being BS on most microwaves for starters. He made a video appreciating her coffee machine for the same shit she loved it for, etc
Haha, the "Please do comment about [differences], it boosts engagement" remark @1:37 is such an outright cynical back-handed compliment, I could have sworn Alec was from the other side of the pond. Not so different now, aren't we?! And look at me, I too am boosting engagement!
Random addition: I used to work in a Petrochemical lab and our Miele lab glassware washer was just a fancy dishwasher. It could clean crude oil off glass with one dishwasher tablet/ pack.
Just a quick note, my girlfriend and I just watched this video together. When I looked over at her at the end, she was on her phone already buying liquid detergent. Good job, youve changed our dishwashing habits!
@Egon Freeman Not really. Science is not stopping the process halfway through, and saying "see? This removes more at the beginning, therefore, without testing the end result, I proclaim it to be better". Science is doing a ton of experiments with and without pre-wash detergent, having the machine finish its cycle, and seeing how often you get dirty dishes after the full cycle. Exactly the kind of testing that the companies who make these pods (and traditional detergent) do to ensure their product meets expectations. I'm pretty sure those pods are formulated stronger to compensate for the lack of pre-wash detergent. In all my testing the only stuff that came out still dirty was charred bits on frying pans that wouldn't come off even after two more cycles in an otherwise empty machine. A smaller amount of extra detergent during pre-wash won't help if two full doses of detergent and two full cycles fail to do the job. For some things you still need steel wool and elbow grease. For all the rest, these pods seem to work just fine.
Man you hit everything right on the head!! I’m a appliance repair tech and everything you said is true! The only thing I would add is, I have found that all the detergents that have an extra “scent” like lemon scent, lavender scent, orange scent leave a nasty residue over time. Avoid those as well! There are also “organic” ones that don’t do a good job. Just things to keep in mind.
I literally do not want a dish cleaner that leaves behind any kind of scent, because I know I'm going to be eating that scent and I don't want it in my body
Your pettiness regarding such tiny consumer gripes is REFRESHING. I love this channel. I am a tinkerer and love thinking about this stuff. The difference is that YOU make full videos about such ideas!
This video actually changed my life. I never realized that I had been snookered by the pretty colors and fancy bullshit and actually believed packs were somehow better than normal detergent, then got mad that my dishwasher wasn't working properly. It never occurred to me to *read the instructions.* a 3 dollar box of kroger brand powder works better than anything I've ever used.
It would take us at least this long to build up a full load. I just prefer handwashing because I can do it quicker. Our apartment hot water takes forever to warm up and it would waste a ton to run it. We have to use an electric kettle to make wash water hot enough.
This was a really fantastic video. I’m a stay-at-home-dad and did similar research on washing machines so I could figure out if I was using too much laundry detergent. (Spoiler alert: everyone does.) I’ve bee get ting frustrated with all the standing water, smells, and unclean dishes. I finally decided to do something about it and found your video. I also really appreciated the thoroughness and nuance. Now off to watch part 2!
I definitely use WAY too much detergent but I live at an apartment with shitty machines so it's the only way to guarantee a good smell. Are there bad effects from over-soaping?
@@joshyoung1440ehhhh its so-so, if you're not leaving any residue on your clothes you should be fine really, if youre using too much it can change the texture of your clothes. the issue comes with how it can damage the machines but you cant control how others use the machines anyways ( people use fabric softener in my building which is awful for your clothes & the machine ) theres also the factor of if your building even washes the washer machines, where i live i havent seen ours cleaned once in the 2 years ive lived here when they should be cleaned roughly every 30 cycles or so. you really shouldnt need more than a few tablespoons full per normal load though, if i remember right? id have to google that part again and im too lazy rn sorry lol
OK, hear me out - a detergent tank. You just fill that thing once a month from a large bottle, and the dishwasher adds as much as it finds necessary, at any stage it wants.
This exists in the restaurant industry... Would love to see it implemented in a residential washer. They also make clothes washing machines with the same "autofill" for soap
I appreciate that we spent 30 minutes talking about dish washers, dish washing detergent and detergent packs. This was very eye opening and educational.

A long, long time ago the appliance department at Sears had transparent models on display. I believe they had one dishwasher and one washing machine. They would just run all day and it was mesmerizing.
Alec: Spends hours disassembling machines for the purpose of illustration. (Edit: and also runs dish soap through his dishwasher) Also Alec: Pays for multiple stock videos of people hand washing dishes so he doesn't have to film it himself.
His kitchen might not be suitable for making a video of handwashing dishes as well (like sink in the corner or not enough open counter space to get a good angle on it.)

no joke, it's 6 AM, can't sleep, just watched this, my family hates doing dishes, and I just took the racks out of my dishwasher to peer inside and find out how best to use this one. there isn't a prewash tub, so I just started a load with detergent in the main release thingy, and squirted a little onto the door itself, and didn't rinse the dishes I put in there at all. if this legit just ended my family's war of frustration on the dishes, then you sir, I like you.
I have been servicing appliances and teaching how to fix them for 35 years or more lol. I still learned a few things, very enjoyable. I had my class watch this video and the second one on too much detergent. I have my own channel on youtube on how to service appliances tmm appliance repair. One note the Frigidaire dishwasher if you opened the bottom where the macerator blade is there is a plastic ball which is used every time the dishwasher stops it moves and blocks either the upper or lower arm for cleaning and that's how it shifts water from upper to lower and visa a versa. Thanks.

This is what youtube is for. I stopped watching television years and years ago, but I never stopped watching random stuff like this on youtube. This channel is terrific.
Better late than never. I watched your above video yesterday (5th December 2023) and was totally fascinated with you research and findings. I did not know that there were such great differences between US and European Dishwashers. I find the idea of a compartment for pre-wash powder and also a sterilise cycle are things we could use here, but drawing hot water from the tap and not having built in water softener, well you can keep those ideas on your side of the pond. Today I used out and and after a search, I bought a 1,5kilo bag of Dishwasher Powder for €2,85 giving me 100 washes. I normally pay around €8.00 for 50 Tabs. So far so good. I will now test with 15gr Powder per load and a tablespoon of Powder for the pre-wash. wish me luck I have a Bosch machine WITH salt softener and no separate compartment for cleaner Thanks for the excellent presentation
Lost my dad to cancer this fall, and this video is one of the ones I'd rush to show him. We always loved discussing the inner workings of appliances, and he was always the Guardian of the Dishwasher, knowing how things needed to be stacked to fit as much as possible in one load, and not hinder the arms or anything. Leave it to you to show me the inner workings of a dishwasher. Seeing the top arm tilt by the jet from the lower also made me realize what that periodic clunking sound from mine is. Pre-wash detergent will forever be used in my household, and god damn do I miss my dad.
That's always when losses hit the hardest, for me. When I'd spot my Dad's or Grandma's favorite foods at a store and instinctively want to buy it for them, only to Remember... You'll always carry that sense of him with you. A second life in your heart.
The tests with extra-dirty dishes is a great demo! When I was a kid, I may have used liquid dish soap in a dishwasher. This may have caused the machine to emit a tsunami of suds which might have spread from the kitchen to the living room carpet, which may have led to my parents being just a bit unhappy. I definitely never did that... again.

My Miele dishwasher has a salt compartment but no designated pre wash space. I checked the manual and it says that you can put detergent on the door if the dishes are very dirty. It also says that the difference of powders / gels vs pods is that you can tune the amount of detergent. So yes, Miele is with you on this one. Great video by the way!
"Honey, you can't just leave dirty plates all over." "What?" "There were eight plates just sitting in your studio for god knows how long, it was disgusting!" "No, my experiment!"
This whole video is about dish washers and detergent packs, and the most interesting takeaway I got was actually the little fun fact about eggs acting as an emulsifier in baked goods.
Eggs (and lots of other things) contain Lecithin. They work by being two-part molecules where one half of the molecule attracts water and the other half attracts oil, therefore will grab both at the same time.
@Benjamin Sims Yeah, I noticed he loaded his sideways, usually, I've loaded a dishwasher with plates facing forward. It'll probably differ by model though.
I wish I had a dishwasher to use. My mom does and I'll take a look at hers and see if she too needs to swap detergents because she does like using the pods as well. But she also lives in an apartment so that dishwasher has had many other owners and the thing might need an internal clean in general. She sometimes uses it, sometimes washes by hand.
A) My wife totally needs to see this: scrubs the dishes before they go in the dw, tosses a pack directly into the tub, and wonders why the dishes still aren't clean. B) *Part* of the "dishes must be scrubbed clear before entering the dishwasher" may come from the commercial kitchen side. Those washers are *basically* not designed to do any scrubbing (that's what the sprayguy (me for 5 years!) is for). The washer is only designed to break down any remaining films and sanitize the dishes in very quick order.
I have hated my dishwasher for so long... and now I'm going to have to rethink my life and I need to go apologize to my dishwasher and start treating it with respect.
Hi. I ask around to see if someone would be interested in a lil Project of mine. Some people try to be the 180 Degree Opposite of Cancel-Culture and try to help UA-cam become less... well, lets say 'Messy' to use nice words only... ... Interested to hear a bit more?
Finally, a youtuber that did some research, and concluded that their knowledge is only limited to a certain country. My dishwasher in the NL uses cold water
@@georgedeaney7270 I can believe that, given the energy efficiency of those whole-house water heaters (especially if you have an older one, like we do)
Since the eletric power prices in germany are pretty high it is cheaper to hook the washer on the hot water outlet. Provided, you heat your water by wood, gas or oil. It's also supposed to shorten the actual washing cycle, since the heatup is shortend.
This was a very persuasive argument for using the prewash function. Something also worth checking is if the seal on your dishwasher's detergent dispenser is functional. I would rather not use packs, but I've gravitated towards them recently because my dishwasher is an ultra-cheap model (landlord provided) that immediately oozes out any gel you put in. I figure the packs are a little more likely to not get swept away in the pre-wash, and they're at least not running down the door as soon as I close it. You can check this with a gel by filling it up, closing the doors, and then not running the dishwasher immediately. Check back in a few minutes to see if you have a mass goo escape on your hands. If so, there's no way that gel is making it all the way to the main wash
I use to dishwash and i feel like the experiment with stuck on 3 day old foods is kind of dumb, even with commercial dishwashers, i know what dishes won't be clean with stuck on food and a hand with a metal scrubby is needed. Otherwise i can confidently throw anything in there, while periodically cleaning the filters and spray blades for good measure.
I've been knowing about the hot water line and a few other points he mentioned. I however did learn about dishwasher pods. But that's not a problem for me since I have lemi shine dishwasher booster tablets. I can just place 1 under the tub upon the start of the wash
Growing up in an Asian family got me brainwashed that dishwashers are water hogs (and never questioned it somehow) That is why when you go to an Asian friend's house the dishwasher is used very much more like plates and utensils storage and not a "dishwasher" per se. Your actual usage demo here shows how little water a modern dishwasher do use. I particularly am impressed with the impeller feature to grind all that "nasty" stuff from the sump basin. Thank you!! You give the most boring stuff a fun twist!! ;)
spot on. I really hate my family keep saying "oh we only have a few plates to clean just hand wash it." I tried to convince my family for years and yet they still hand wash it and leave the goddamn dishwasher as a plate container. So fucking stupid
Oh same here. Even knowing on paper it uses less water, I just assumed it was continuously taking in very little water. To be fair, you’d never look at hour old hand dish water and imagine how you can recycle water for an hour and have clean dishes come out!
Best show ever! I'm cancelling my Netflix account, adding some detergent to my rinse cycle, switching to powder. Also loved you as badger in Breaking Bad! Thanks dude!
As an appliance salesperson who has had to take multiple training courses on appliances, this is the most thorough explanation about a dishwasher I have ever received. Thank you.
People tend to knock learning things from UA-cam, but the best information I’ve ever seen presented about mechanical contrivances have been from channels like this one, AvE, project farm, engineering explained, and us auto industry. A channel that has old training videos from the military and auto makers to train mechanics. Most all things that I truly understand, I've learned from UA-cam.
Dishwashers are lighter than you think. Not to diminish Alec or anything, but when it comes to household appliances, dishwashers are about the lightest.
Portable ones not so much. They have a heavy counterweight on the back to balance it when the door is open and the rack full of heavy dishes are sitting on it.
Sidenote for people who have accidentally done this, or for some reason had to deal with this. In short, salt screws up the suds surface tension after you scoop out the majority of what you can.
You seriously might have just changed my life when it comes to dishwashers... When I was growing up my mom's famous saying was " It's not a garbage disposal, You have to rinse the dishes before you put them in"... Based off what you've explained and I've seen, that's exactly what they are, A big fat garbage disposal that cleans your dishes. I am shook. I must spend 30 minutes scrubbing and rinsing all the dishes before I stick them into the dishwasher I've been wasting my time energy, and water and now I get to do exactly what you get to do, stick them in dirty, I can't wait to see how it works!!!!
It is because you were working for Home Despot, you are supposed to sell the teachings of despotism, not dishwashers! But it could be worse... You could have been working for Cambodian Tire though...
Fascinating! You've certainly made a believer out of me. Before now, I've always considered 'pre-wash' to just be something they did as a way of getting more money out of you. But knowing how exactly a dishwasher works, it makes a lot more sense, now. Thank you. :) And then there's my mother, who takes from both camps. She uses the packs in the main bit, but also buys the powder and pours it into the pre-wash section. She's done this for longer then I can remember.
Me too. My boyfriend was looking over my shoulder as he did that. "Is that a WHOLE dishwasher?" "Yeah" "And he just.....hoisted it onto the table?" "Yep" "Wow" Seeing as that table kinda looks like a cheap fold-out table, I was surprised it didn't shake or collapse
Got a bunch of friends who share a house. Couple weeks ago they were complaining about their dishwasher, and I told them about this. Apparently it worked so well that when I was over yesterday, one of them stopped another friend (who didn’t live there) from washing a dish, saying “we have a new thing with the dishwasher, just put it in there and they come out perfect”. Your thing worked so well that they actively stopped someone else from washing their dishes

I was told by a Kenmore repair guy, that the glass would inevitably become cloudy, and become permanently etched by the chemicals in detergents, making cleaning it futile.
@Dogmo Satchmo @Vierax The reason why glass becomes cloudy and silverware stale is bad detergents, mostly from expensive brands. Good Tabs from non expensive no name brand keeps your glass and silverware all shiny. Still I'd argue against glass for several reasons, the main one pretty obvious how much space it would take away looking at how the looking glass in a washing machine is shaped.
As a kid, I remember seeing displays in a store (early 90's or so) where there was a dishwasher had a clear front and was running showing the action of the water jets, etc.
If you ever run out of video ideas, I would legit listen to you tell me how all household appliances work. I bought a dishwasher after watching this.....several times......because it was so fascinating. Currently trying to fix my washing machine and wish I knew the mechanics as good as I know my dishwasher thanks to this video!
Dishwashers of that size weigh upwards of 80 pounds, and that weight is unbalanced, making them quite cumbersome. Knowing that, are we just going to ignore how he straight man-moded that one up on the table? Well hoisted, sir. Well hoisted.
Nah, most inexpensive plastic ones like Frigidaire etc, usually weigh like 35-45lbs. Maybe 50 tops. It's the stainless models that weigh a ton. Taking the door off nearly cuts that weight in half(it's also why it needs assist springs to aide in closing it). The rest of the weight is in the bottom where the pumps and valves are. At any rate, they're so lightweight that the door can tip them forward if not secured properly. This explains the straps at the top edge of the tub where it meets the countertop. They're not too heavy, just really cumbersome.
@@B1GDaddyFatStax Fair. But, he still had the door on that one. Meaning, he still dead lifted that thing, with only minor difficulty. Still a fine hoist, for something that awkwardly weighted.
I'm impressed with the way he just yoinked the dishwasher up on the counter. If I had done that I'd be getting myself an appointment for physical therapist for Christmas.
It being mainly just plastic certainly helped him yoink it. I had a similar experience when taking my old exhaust air tumble dryer out of the basement. Was light as a feather compared to the replacement condenser heat pump model that weighs 50kg. Let's wait until his new dishwasher breaks and lure him into making a video about it for comparision :D
I watched this video several months ago and we switched to powder detergent. It has been exactly that long since I've been accused of not rinsing dishes before putting them in the washer (of which I was/am absolutely guilty). Thank you!
There's an important thing that was missed in this video! The instructions from Cascade are telling you to use way too much detergent. I've made a follow-up video about detergent dosing and also addressed a lot of your concerns in it. ua-cam.com/video/Ll6-eGDpimU/v-deo.html
If packs were sold with, maybe, tear-off baby packs meant to be thrown in along with the main wash, I'd be elated. And, to be clear, it's not like I think packs, tabs, whatever don't work - I'm sure plenty of you have fine experiences with them. They just... well as I said they don't make sense to me. Not for a dishwasher, anyway!
You on some sort of “Star Trek”?
I love your videos and you always make me laugh.
...and I share your ire with these pods, we switched back to regular liquid soap after some experiments of our own.
Is there any way I can contact you in a more professional way? I did a project on WED for my final project this semester and found some information on the Capital Subway in my research.
(I also referenced your haunted mansion video in my paper, so your work is greatly appreciated!)
I was going to suggest mini packs either in a separate section of the container or as you suggested tear-offs
I use the packs but I have never just tossed them in the main body of the dishwasher. I have always put them in the detergent area of the dishwasher. I have not been told otherwise and I never really stopped to look at the instructions and these packs work great unless they have sat too many years as I do have a habit of only buying them on sale.
As someone that didn’t grow up with a dishwasher this was very informative.

WHY DO THEY NOT HAVE A PRE-WASH AREA, THEN? Ugh, that is needlessly confusing.
Thank you for sharing this tid-bit!
I suspect the bit about short-running programs has something to do with the water temperature again since hot water should dissolve the detergent tablets faster. I'm German too but have yet to ever buy or install a dishwasher so I don't know if ours are usually hooked up to hot water too.
And this would also be valid for Siemens dishwashers as they are basically the same accept the logo.
@@TheStef1309 You can do it both ways though I'd recommend cold water. It's just easier and more consistent
So for the Bosh-Models having only one compartment seems to be more a thing of that tradition and not so much from giving into pods.

tl;dr from both this and the followup:
- Don't worry about rinsing dishes before putting it into the dishwasher
- Heat sink water before turning on Dish Washer
- Use the 'Normal Setting' on your dishwasher to make sure the pre-wash happens
- Use powder Detergent (DON'T use dish soap, pods, or gels)
- Place in both the main wash, and pre-wash cups
- Don't use TOO much - the amount you need correlates with how hard your water is. If you have a powdery residue or film on dishes, you may be using too much. Try filling it halfway
- Don't sweat whether or not it has phosphates
- Get rinse-aid, it can not be included in detergent
- Consider getting a dishwasher cleaning product, like Glisten Dishwasher cleaner

Your skepticism and later edit are both extremely appreciated. Thank you sir.
"I want you to experience the full potential of your dishwasher."
I believe you.
I always thought that I didn't quite grasp how a dishwasher gets the job done and this video proves it. Good job, youve changed our dishwashing habits!
I'm 51 years old and I have never used a dishwasher in my life. I don't even know how to operate one.
@Ross Bourne And then just go online and start spreading the word of a dishwasher detergent shortage 😜
We had an awful time with gel detergent. Our dishwasher ran much better with powder.
Man you hit everything right on the head!! I’m a appliance repair tech and everything you said is true! We’ve been putting two dishwasher tabs (one in the compartment, and one in the cutlery rack) this whole time, not realizing why it worked so much better this way. Thanks for saving us future money!
Me too I tried it once and saw the difference 😂😂 I understand now
@@SimonWoodburyForget I mean it’s about the same as filling both compartments on a dishwasher that has them for a pre rinse cycle like he talks about.
Ive never understood why the tabs are so popular in the first place. Always just bought powder. Its dirt cheap, always worked fine, and its not exactly difficult to just pour powder into the dispenser. Never knew about also pouring the powder in the prewash till just now watching this video though, so thats pretty neat.
That is doubling your cost then
@@Inbal_FeuchtwangerWhen I bought a new dishwasher in 2020 (Kitchen Aid) the salesman recommended that I use powdered detergent and only 1TBSP because of the water qualities in Chicago. I currently use the gel (ALDI has a cheap house brand) and it works great. I’m now going to start adding a squirt to the tub for the pre wash.
I never realized how much I wanted to see the inside of a dishwasher in action until this video.
I want a transparent dishwasher door now.
A long, long time ago the appliance department at Sears had transparent models on display. I believe they had one dishwasher and one washing machine. They would just run all day and it was mesmerizing.

Also Alec: Pays for multiple stock videos of people hand washing dishes so he doesn't have to film it himself.
Best comment.
One is fun, the other a lot less so
His kitchen might not be suitable for making a video of handwashing dishes as well (like sink in the corner or not enough open counter space to get a good angle on it.)
Stock videos are generally sold as a package for a few dollars a month.
He didn't 'pay for multiple stock videos' in the same way you didn't pay more to listen to Spotify for 5 hours instead of 10.

Thanks.
Wow... you’ve managed to completely entertain me for 32 minutes talking about dishwashers. Also, I can not believe that I’ve gone my entire life just glancing past the pre-wash cup without ever even thinking about it in the slightest. I’m really starting to wonder what other obvious things I’m completely missing.
I'm here to watch this video for a second time a couple months later and this time I specifically searched for it.

I will now test with 15gr Powder per load and a tablespoon of Powder for the pre-wash. wish me luck
I have a Bosch machine WITH salt softener and no separate compartment for cleaner
Thanks for the excellent presentation
Lost my dad to cancer this fall, and this video is one of the ones I'd rush to show him. We always loved discussing the inner workings of appliances, and he was always the Guardian of the Dishwasher, knowing how things needed to be stacked to fit as much as possible in one load, and not hinder the arms or anything. Leave it to you to show me the inner workings of a dishwasher. Seeing the top arm tilt by the jet from the lower also made me realize what that periodic clunking sound from mine is. Pre-wash detergent will forever be used in my household, and god damn do I miss my dad.
So sorry for your loss. Your dad sounds like a great guy.
That's always when losses hit the hardest, for me. When I'd spot my Dad's or Grandma's favorite foods at a store and instinctively want to buy it for them, only to Remember... Or so many series, movies, and UA-cam clips I'd love to have seen Dad's reaction too, or if my Grandma would've loved this one song...
But hang in there. He'd want you to keep right on experiencing the life he's been preparing you for. And when you stumble upon a shared joy, enjoy it enough for the both of you. You'll always carry that sense of him with you. A second life in your heart.
May he Rest In Peace, best of luck handling your loss
He's probably the dish wash king in Heaven, now.
That's a sweet post. Sorry for your loss. I'm sure he's watching it in heaven.

This whole video is about dish washers and detergent packs, and the most interesting takeaway I got was actually the little fun fact about eggs acting as an emulsifier in baked goods.
I was really happy to learn that little fact
Eggs (and lots of other things) contain Lecithin. They work by being two-part molecules where one half of the molecule attracts water and the other half attracts oil, therefore will grab both at the same time.
yoLks
And it's the job of eggs in Mayonaise too.
Yeah the yolk is where the bulk of the emulsifier is, thats why its used in mayonnaise and salad cream 😁

No need to scrub, just remove large pieces.

My dishwasher in the NL uses cold water
Does the dishwasher then heat it up or?
@@muhilan8540 Yes. Believe it or not it is more energy efficient.
@@georgedeaney7270 I can believe that, given the energy efficiency of those whole-house water heaters (especially if you have an older one, like we do)
Same in Spain.
Good idea!

I use to dishwash and i feel like the experiment with stuck on 3 day old foods is kind of dumb, even with commercial dishwashers, i know what dishes won't be clean with stuck on food and a hand with a metal scrubby is needed. Otherwise i can confidently throw anything in there, while periodically cleaning the filters and spray blades for good measure.

They are pretty light. Other than the front of the door, they're mostly plastic. If you have a stainless steel tub they're a little bit heavier.

I'm so glad you actually exemplified putting dish soap in the washer. It made me happy to see suds on the floor. My life is complete.

@Dogmo Satchmo @Vierax The reason why glass becomes cloudy and silverware stale is bad detergents, mostly from expensive brands.
