I got un-fired… But now I quit.

- When I got fired from this job (that we weren't even charging for), I should have just walked away and never looked to back. But when the woman called back a month later and told me her car had still not been recovered, I felt bad and agreed to go try it again. This time however, the information was drastically different than what I was given last time, so we took that information and drove 100 miles into the desert to try again. Unfortunately, we again didn't find it. At the end of another very long day when I got ahold of her to let her know the bad news... She gave me information that was completely different yet again, and none of it is even remotely close to related, and asked when I was going back out there. But at this point, I'm done. I can't continue to spend money and days on wild goose chases with completely unreliable information. So when it comes to this job, I quit.

I have an update since this video was filmed. Apparently the woman and her husband have driven out there themselves and he was able to lead her right to it. It is nowhere even remotely close to the area of the desert they had us searching in on either trip. We were completely wasting our time and fuel on both days. But the even bigger problem is that it turns out the car is quite a few miles from the nearest two track trail, and many more than that from an actual road. The husband apparently just pointed it in a random direction across the snow covered desert and put his foot to the floor until it wouldn't go any more. She sent me pictures and it is high centered on a bunch of large rocks. There is no way any sort of tow truck is getting to it, and now that the snow he drove across to get there is melted, trying to drag it out to the road with a Jeep across miles of rocky desert is just going to gut the bottom of the car and likely dump oil and car parts in the desert where we don't want it. There is simply no way to pull it out without ripping that car apart. The car looks like it was on it's last leg to begin with and was probably worth $500-1,000 BEFORE all this happened, and now after it's joy ride through the desert, it is nothing but scrap. My original goal was to get this woman her car back so she was no longer without a vehicle and walking to work, but since this car is never going to drive again, and she has already gotten another vehicle, I am walking away from this whole mess and not looking back. I really wanted to help, but after putting 2 days and over 500 miles into this project at no charge and getting a very negative attitude towards me (and even fired once) for not finding it... sometimes you just have to realize that other people's problems are not your problem.
Yeah mate. Sleep sound knowing that you are of much higher caliber than these folks who brought negativity and drama into your life. Live your best life as these folks always live miserable ones.
A shame for nature, that this car is rotting away there, but i fully understand you. dude should be forced to bring it back piece by piece on foot :D
When I worked as a social worker ion a crisis centre, I learned the very valuable lesson that you just can't help everone. Some people don't want to be helped, others, you just can't help.
That's a useful life lesson that makes your own life so much easier!
Casey I completely agree with your decision. Just the cost of 500 miles of driving a truck or Jeep over all those rough roads, gas ain't cheap! I do wonder if on an annual basis you could make good use of a trailer like the off-road builds of Matt at MORR and Rory in Moab? They need such rugged off-road trailers, so it makes sense for them. Maybe you just don't get enough calls needing such a trailer to make that pay for itself? Anyway, bummer of a situation and Good On You for being a good person trying so very hard to help folks out! :)
Wow.. that's BS.
I’m irritated and amused at the same time.
People! Who knows what their problem is.
What "people"? That's the problem. Humans aren't people. When they believe they are, that's when everything goes wrong.
The ones that really irritate me are the ones that get out before you get there and don’t ever think to tell you…

Man I hear ya. Called out at 2am. Wife's at work so I gotta wake someone to watch my boys. Get dressed for a below zero night (wisconsin). Sitter shows by 3:15 I'm out 25 mile back country drive. Go another 10 miles only to find where someone went in and fresh tires spinning through the ice down to the blacktop. Yeehaw a drunk pulled another drunk outta the ditch and I'm holding my....yeah. so I wasted 20 bucks of fuel 40 since I had to wake the sitter wasted my time just to get back too late to go to bed for an hour before I wake my boys for school. Then ho into work after getting them off to the bus only to get butched at by the bosses wife that it took me too long to get there. Oh and I was covering the bosses on call night because he went to supper and got drunk AGAIN! I guess I was put on earth to eat shut by the shovel full. Oh and I only get paid per recovery/tow and if it's AAA I get next to nothing.
@@ClimptonDiddlehopperI’d have quit. That’s awful. If enough people quit their 💩 jobs and get together to run a cooperative company that kind of thing just can’t happen. I’d charge a customer for going out there, flag drop charge, then charge for whatever has to be done. AAA can go suck it.
I'm always amazed at the attitude people have when the labor and materials are free.
Which is more likely, an ungrateful person with unsolvable problems, or someone who appreciates any help they can get.

Amen, give someone your time free, and you equipment and resources all out of your own pocket. Then they have the audacity to fire you. Wow is all I can say. Casey is kinder then I would be, once I was fired my charity attitude would be affected. She can't find the car, her husband who drove it out there can't find the car. But Casey the guy who helps for free should magically be able to find the car or get fired. REALLY, that is some amazing reasoning. Wouldn't it be smarter to thank him for trying his best and beg him to try again, and hope for some better results at some point.
The first rule of problem solving is to decide if it's your problem. Casey, you are very generous in your willingness to adopt everyone else's monkeys, but there are limits.
And that limit was crossed (for me) the first time she had an attitude when car was not found.
@@muppetpaster that limit was crossed for me when he didn't have some kind of minimum charge for time spent (wasted)
Cool, then stop using absolutely everything you use in your daily life that you did not explicitly and wholly harvest/mine/refine/grow/fabricate by your own hands alone. Because your needs are nobody else's problem.
I can’t blame you for walking away from this situation. You have better things to do than deal with people like this.
Agreed! Not to mention this goose chase may have resulted in Casey being in a predicament!
I think you went the extra mile with these folks and avoided the step "too far." I once took extensive training in how to help people who found themselves in difficult personal or emotional situations. You beat me to it. I was gonna say 499 miles. But... Since this just randomly showed up on my recommended.... Oh well. Ha ha
When I was young I used to do everything I could to help people. Around the time that some people I had previously helped got angry when I wasn't available to help with their new crisis I changed my mind.
Now as an old man I play dumb and useless most of the time.

When people are young and inexperienced, they don’t understand this. But like everyone else and every generation, they know that you can only do so much before it starts taking a toll on you too!

I learned that lesson the hard way too. I had a portable welder and got called whenever someone broke something. Of course all on my dime.

You are dedicated. Truely appreciated your assistance. Keep up the good rescue.
Casey I am proud of your efforts. It's sad the couple are unable to appreciate your kindness to them.
This is an example of what a mechanic I worked with said all the time. They come to you with a problem and if you touch it at all it’s all your problem and they want you to fix it the way they expect or else. As you said firing you was a favor to you.
Same with many tasks, once you START it always becomes your problem, even following specific instructions, if gut feeling says run away.... sprint
Can't blame you for quitting Casey! You did everything in your power to find it and wasted time and fuel trying to be a nice guy.
Thank you for all you do. !!

If memory serves me correctly, i do believe his dads jeep broke down on that excursion?😂
My second time watching this video today, and I have come to the same conclusion both times, you’re a good man Casey LaDelle.
Thanks for the update Casey. Still a pretty good day at your office though!!!
It's hard to find a pin in a haystack when your in the wrong haystack.
Was he on drugs driving that car offroad?
There are some people who do not need to own a car much less drive one. Your tenacity and generosity are outstanding.
Knowing you, you must have a friend with an airplane. Why quit now?
Those people have no idea where that vehicle is. They just want you to go on a wild goose chase. I sure hope you are getting compensated for this. It was nice to see your Dad again.
Good point. If the husband's car is stuck in the middle of a boulder field, how were they able to "drive right to it."?
You did the right thing by quitting the search!
Nice that you were so kind. But run from these people if you see them. Crazy can’t be fixed.
I really appreciate your attitude and humor. It's good to see a clever, decent, honest human on You Tube.
Thanks for the update! People are just stupid sometimes and can’t be helped!!
Always honest effort and talk from Casey. Casey, I hard wired my gen set to my Pod 180 today, works great. Also, I checked to see if everything is fastened, all is good from straw palace territory.
im speechless casey. your ability to "go where no man has gone before " with a smile and be as helpful as you can is unbelievable . i hope you were commensurated for your efforts to some extent . i am currently reflecting on a lifetime of such personal experiences . take care.
Casey, I just stumbled onto your channel and am impressed by your attitude toward your work and your clients. I applaud you. Having said that, let me pass on what a colleague of mine told me a couple of decades ago, that has been valuable information. Rarely had to be used, but it is still valuable. "The most important thing you need to learn is when to fire your client." Too true.
Glad to see your Dad is out and about with you.
I believe this represents the perfect example of why many "for hires" back in ... ummm, a long time ago along with standard charges for services rendered had a notice posted regarding attitude fees.
Just to help people understand just how big of an area they are searching Casey said it was 79 square miles. Each square mile is 640 acres so they are searching an area that is as follows: 640 X 79 = 50,560 acres.
Awesome that through all of this you still had an adventure and drone races with your dad! Still a win....that alone is priceless.
You, Ben & your dad all went above n beyond what most woulda ! And for a woman that didn't seen very appreciative in the first place.
Y'all done good 👌🇺🇸
I'm amazed at the mental capacity of some people when it comes to having anything done, and I'm surprised at your decision to do what you did without any compensation.
It takes all sorts and, when you don’t have an adequate filter, like a retainer fee before embarking on a wild goose chase, you’re going to meet more than your fair share of the ones you’d rather avoid.
I don’t think there’s anyone else who’d try to search an area that size, especially with such vague directions, never mind do it for free.
He’s lucky he wasn’t relying on his directions for S&R to come and save him.
I'm with you and all of the above. I'm glad you walked away. You even used two drones and couldn't find it and you did exactly what the little map said. We all learn lessons and this is one we all should learn from. The exact at where your vehicle is. Or a good map
How some people manage to get through life is mystifying
I don't know what to say about this one. It blows me away that someone sent you on a long, time consuming, expensive search, for a junk car. Its really hard to be the good guy all the time. Don't let the bad ones deter you from your vis
I have enjoyed this video.... there are so many reasons not to find the car..... The man who owned the car had a stroke and as such He may have a false memory which means the vehicle he was driving could be in the next county ..... I wish you the best of luck....... You have an awesome channel..... I love watching you do rescues....
You did more than most would👍😎 The drone race with your Dad was fun😂 Stay safe out there!❤️🙏
Hey Casey....at least you got to spend time with your Dad. Now that is priceless..
Well it wasn't a complete waste of time - you did get to see Antelope and wild horses in a natural setting.
Wild horses are an invasive species and need to be removed, not admired!
I imagine that you have spent over $300 in diesel looking for the car. You are dedicated!
Hopefully the expense is tax deductible.
Plus the scratches! But dont worry the videos make up for the tow and fuel..But its a great day with his dad!

Your determination was worthy of a way better cause… Love your sense of humor though; thanks for the insightful map, into this whole lot of green nothingness.
Hope she watches your videos and see how hard you tried to find it. All the miles you drove and all the fuel you used and put wear and tear on your trucks. You did your best and most would not of done half of what you did. It's ok you did ya best trying to help the family. Worse part is she is ungrateful for all your efforts
You made a good call to walk away from this one, Casey. And cherish your times with your dad. I wish mine was still around to do things like desert driving and drone racing with.
In spite of issues with the woman and her husband, lots of quality time with your Dad, just before Father's Day! 😊 Good job winning the drone race. Have you ever done on video on your Drone and its capabilities? Would be interested in that.
someone should inform the land owner or the authorities that there is a abandoned car left in the wilderness. they then will find someone to tow it and send them the bill. it is just not ok to leave wreckage in nature or on public or on someone else's land. if you go off road it is your responsibility to have a plan to recover any stranded car or items. and almost all off roaders have such a plan and friends to fix any issues. the few bad apples will have trails and areas closed for all of us.

But now days
Dave Sparks has a helicopter and slings and you name it that can pick up a vehicle from the Great salt lake and transport it via air to civilization!
Maybe a collaboration?
They actually went to Oregon and lifted a plane off from a hillside which held somebody's remains inside so his wife could have a funeral and bury her husband.
Chances of them being able to pick up this truck and be able to get it out of there without any more damage?? 😅
Zero desire to have anything to do with that.
