  • When I got fired from this job (that we weren't even charging for), I should have just walked away and never looked to back. But when the woman called back a month later and told me her car had still not been recovered, I felt bad and agreed to go try it again. This time however, the information was drastically different than what I was given last time, so we took that information and drove 100 miles into the desert to try again. Unfortunately, we again didn't find it. At the end of another very long day when I got ahold of her to let her know the bad news... She gave me information that was completely different yet again, and none of it is even remotely close to related, and asked when I was going back out there. But at this point, I'm done. I can't continue to spend money and days on wild goose chases with completely unreliable information. So when it comes to this job, I quit.

I have an update since this video was filmed. Apparently the woman and her husband have driven out there themselves and he was able to lead her right to it. It is nowhere even remotely close to the area of the desert they had us searching in on either trip. We were completely wasting our time and fuel on both days. But the even bigger problem is that it turns out the car is quite a few miles from the nearest two track trail, and many more than that from an actual road. The husband apparently just pointed it in a random direction across the snow covered desert and put his foot to the floor until it wouldn't go any more. She sent me pictures and it is high centered on a bunch of large rocks. There is no way any sort of tow truck is getting to it, and now that the snow he drove across to get there is melted, trying to drag it out to the road with a Jeep across miles of rocky desert is just going to gut the bottom of the car and likely dump oil and car parts in the desert where we don't want it. There is simply no way to pull it out without ripping that car apart. The car looks like it was on it's last leg to begin with and was probably worth $500-1,000 BEFORE all this happened, and now after it's joy ride through the desert, it is nothing but scrap. My original goal was to get this woman her car back so she was no longer without a vehicle and walking to work, but since this car is never going to drive again, and she has already gotten another vehicle, I am walking away from this whole mess and not looking back. I really wanted to help, but after putting 2 days and over 500 miles into this project at no charge and getting a very negative attitude towards me (and even fired once) for not finding it... sometimes you just have to realize that other people's problems are not your problem.

Casey I completely agree with your decision. Just the cost of 500 miles of driving a truck or Jeep over all those rough roads, gas ain't cheap! I do wonder if on an annual basis you could make good use of a trailer like the off-road builds of Matt at MORR and Rory in Moab? They need such rugged off-road trailers, so it makes sense for them. Maybe you just don't get enough calls needing such a trailer to make that pay for itself? Anyway, bummer of a situation and Good On You for being a good person trying so very hard to help folks out! :)

Man I hear ya. Called out at 2am. Wife's at work so I gotta wake someone to watch my boys. Get dressed for a below zero night (wisconsin). Sitter shows by 3:15 I'm out 25 mile back country drive. Go another 10 miles only to find where someone went in and fresh tires spinning through the ice down to the blacktop. Yeehaw a drunk pulled another drunk outta the ditch and I'm holding my....yeah. so I wasted 20 bucks of fuel 40 since I had to wake the sitter wasted my time just to get back too late to go to bed for an hour before I wake my boys for school. Then ho into work after getting them off to the bus only to get butched at by the bosses wife that it took me too long to get there. Oh and I was covering the bosses on call night because he went to supper and got drunk AGAIN! I guess I was put on earth to eat shut by the shovel full. Oh and I only get paid per recovery/tow and if it's AAA I get next to nothing.

Casey is kinder then I would be, once I was fired my charity attitude would be affected. She can't find the car, her husband who drove it out there can't find the car. But Casey the guy who helps for free should magically be able to find the car or get fired. REALLY, that is some amazing reasoning. Just to help people understand just how big of an area they are searching Casey said it was 79 square miles. Each square mile is 640 acres so they are searching an area that is as follows: 640 X 79 = 50,560 acres.

It takes all sorts and, when you don’t have an adequate filter, like a retainer fee before embarking on a wild goose chase, you’re going to meet more than your fair share of the ones you’d rather avoid.
I don’t think there’s anyone else who’d try to search an area that size, especially with such vague directions, never mind do it for free.
He’s lucky he wasn’t relying on his directions for S&R to come and save him.

someone should inform the land owner or the authorities that there is a abandoned car left in the wilderness. they then will find someone to tow it and send them the bill. it is just not ok to leave wreckage in nature or on public or on someone else's land. if you go off road it is your responsibility to have a plan to recover any stranded car or items. and almost all off roaders have such a plan and friends to fix any issues. the few bad apples will have trails and areas closed for all of us.

I'm sorry that you didn't find the vehicle but sometimes you can't let someone's stupidity suck you in like it did in this instance. That was far too expensive. Hopefully that woman learned a lesson and doesn't give her husband use of the vehicle again, it may end much worse next time. Always enjoy seeing your dad. Glad you two got to spend time together. Hey Casey there are several people in the area that have helicopters for cherry orchards sometimes they are on standby but this is where diesel Dave and Dave Sparks cut their teeth on learning how to fly.
    But now days
Dave Sparks has a helicopter and slings and you name it that can pick up a vehicle from the Great salt lake and transport it via air to civilization!
    Maybe a collaboration?
They actually went to Oregon and lifted a plane off from a hillside which held somebody's remains inside so his wife could have a funeral and bury her husband.
Chances of them being able to pick up this truck and be able to get it out of there without any more damage?? 😅
